02:00 - 13:0013:00 - 23:00

1:00 PM
I stay away from Azure exactly due to stuff like that. Company that don't care about security even a tiny bit can't have a good cloud service. Period.

@ShadowWizard yep, that is probably how it went.
BTW, unrelated... @Tinkeringbell, do you think(eringbell) that we should make a meta post about the double watch thing?

@Derpy Ehh. I'm one of those 'I'll see what happens' kind of people
If I really do get two, I'll make a meta post ;) I don't want people not to get their watch because I got two, but otherwise it should be fine.

@Tinkeringbell little problem: if that is the case, there may be still time to fix that now. Latter... what you do?
Send back the package?

@Derpy send to the first to ask, or first to send a stamped envelope.
:)

@ShadowWizard the watch in a stamped envelope?
First... weight.
Second... weight.

1:05 PM
@Derpy probably not, but don't think you can just forward an existing package, will have to take it out and put in a new package/envelope.

third, I don't know your country, but here "stamped envelope" equals "free gift for the post office"

@Derpy nah, here it's common for someone to send empty stamped envelope, and the other person put something in it and send back.

@ShadowWizard so you don't live in a "steal it unless it is traceable" country?

@Derpy not yet. :)
Of course our mail service has its flaws, but stealing envelopes isn't one of those.

@ShadowWizard where I live, it is not uncommon to find water/electricity bills in trash cans because the mail delivery [redacted] didn't bother to actually delivery them.
not joking, I think one of the many water company actually attempted suing them

1:12 PM
@Derpy ohh, that happens here too, more than one people uploaded vids showing such things to Facebook. (someone noticed the delivery guy actually dump the letters in a trash can.)
But still, it's not stealing. :)

@ShadowWizard As I said, the only thing that stops the package from "going lost" is its traceability.
If it can't safely be tracked down...

@Derpy Yep. I don't know about you, but over here there's some law that says people can't mail you stuff you don't want :P
So I always sent my tax letters return to sender as well ;)
You're right, they might be able to fix stuff now, perhaps better ask?

@Derpy reminds me of this UX question

@Derpy also someone will notice if we talk about it ;p

@JourneymanGeek someone already tried to ping @JNat before, I am not sure he will notice anytime soon. May be busy

1:26 PM
Any CM is always busy.

There will hopefully be an extra one soon? :)

Replicating watches :O

@Bookends You can vote on existing proposals without need for a password, so it isn't like you are required to add one at any point. Also worth noticing that we originally noticed the issue because a coworker was trying to see what data was required for the registration and used "test@example.com" as the mail account.

@Tinkeringbell there will?? Nice!

Though then they're busy getting the new CM up to speed :P It never ends!
@ShadowWizard They're hiring. Says the work here page.
For a while now though... so I guess I might be optimistic if I say 'soon'.

1:29 PM
@Tinkeringbell nice. CM for one site, like they did with Russian.SO and Japaneese.SO? Or "general purpose" CM?
Though the CM hired to Russian.SO became more than that, I think.

@Tinkeringbell problem. I kinda want a second watch :P The only things that stops me is the fact that someone may be missing the second watch I get

@ShadowWizard If I remember correctly, a general purpose one, as there wasn't any hard language requirement (just a 'would be nice if you could do one of those')

@Derpy if the second watch is due to you posting two answers then no such risk.
@Tinkeringbell hmm... many times the "would be nice" is actually "you really should have it, but we don't want to deter potential people who might be awesome in everything else". No? ;)
omg

@ShadowWizard didn't post two answers on the watch contest. Unless you consider each calendar day as a separate answer - in that case I am still missing 25-2 = 23 more watches

I can't resist...
...
When you burn @Book with @Fire, you get @Ash.
runs away
nah

1:34 PM
Why did you burn your wizard book :(

@Derpy oh. So what's the source of that double watch??

@ShadowWizard Just go read the job posting for yourself if you're that curious :P As far as I know, 'would be nice' is 'bonus points', not 'you really should have it'.
At least over here.

@Bookends you're not Wizard Book :D

@ShadowWizard We think it must be an error. Some of the winners of the Time contest apparently got two mails from DHL, with different waybill codes.
That seems to indicate the double mails are not a dupe but actual double swag items

@Tinkeringbell formally? of course. Actually? Not always. Same as gender, i.e. they won't write anywhere that they prefer men over women but that's just the case in too many places, most likely to this day. :)
So... we can't really know.

1:38 PM
@ShadowWizard Don't get me started on that :P

@Derpy well, only JNat can know for sure... meta post is fitting.

But that's the opposite: not mentioning something that you are looking for. Here they mentioning it.

You applied? /cc @Journeyman

@Tinkeringbell QUICK! TWITTER POST! SE IS NOT INCLUSIVE ENOUGH! THEY DIDN'T ASK FOR GENDER PREFERENCE ON THE WATCHES!
(disclaimer: lame joke. Please, don't.)

@Derpy The watches are gender neutral? :P

1:40 PM
@Tinkeringbell on the Timex site, they both have Man watches and Lady watches
why it is not man/woman or sir/lady I have no clue.

@Derpy Ah. Never pay much attention to that, if it fits it fits ;)
I'm a comfort kind of person.

@Tinkeringbell maybe they actually sent both versions when they could not guess the winner gender? ^_^'

@Derpy Lady implies more honor, so maybe they try to be more welcoming to women.

@Derpy you know why that is

@Derpy If people still need to guess mine... I'm going to get mad :P

1:42 PM
They're appealing to the stereotype :p

@Tinkeringbell Parrot?

It's written all over my IPS posts and I used my real name in my e-mail address :P
@Derpy That's not a gender. Let's not go there...

@Tinkeringbell these days real name doesn't imply gender at all.

it just occured to me you dont know my real first name and I don't know any of yours

I have a name used mostly for females. lol
@Magisch my own isn't really a secret, even used it here sometimes... and it's part of the email which is in my profile. :)

1:44 PM
@ShadowWizard Well, Derpy mentioned guessing gender... Which is easy to do in my case. That was the point I was making ;)
Of course that doesn't work for everyone on the internet ;)

@Tinkeringbell yup. You're.... umm... ehh...
:P

Me ;)

My sister got a parrot (green, small) for almost 20 years now, and has no idea to this day what is its gender. lol
she assumes male, but think it requires actual blood tests or something to know, and there's just no reason to do it.

@Tinkeringbell no, I mean... the parrot is clearly male. Too colorful. It is know that male parrots are the one with brighter colors, they are used to impress the potential mate. A common thing with many animals.
see the mandarin duck for example.

Looks like main and meta ^
Anyway @Tink I've already mentioned the parrot... which you said is not a parrot... lol
Oct 31 '18 at 12:27, by Shadow Wizard
user image
Same as this one ^
Let's see if I have actual pic of him/her/it...

1:48 PM
@Derpy That's... a new theory for me
I know that it's like that for some birds, never thought it was the same for parrots.
I thought most parrot species weren't sexually dimorphic.
Google confirms that btw ;)

Found one! From 11 years ago....

He's green!
but a little bit cute

The eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) is a parrot native to the Solomon Islands, Sumba, New Guinea and nearby islands, northeastern Australia, and the Maluku Islands (Moluccas). It is unusual in the parrot family for its extreme sexual dimorphism of the colours of the plumage; the male having a mostly bright emerald green plumage and the female a mostly bright red and purple/blue plumage. Joseph Forshaw, in his book Parrots of the World, noted that the first European ornithologists to see eclectus parrots thought they were of two distinct species. Large populations of this parrot remain, and...
(and now let's wait till she notice that the male one is the green one)

@Derpy I'm not that species :P

hides in a bush

1:52 PM
Tink is simply a parrot racist...

;)
@Tinkeringbell and totally insane... lol

@Mithrandir Perhaps. I just find the red ones a lot prettier than the green and blue ones :)

@Derpy actually... my sister got a Quaker parrot. :D
The monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus), also known as the Quaker parrot, is a small, bright-green parrot with a greyish breast and greenish-yellow abdomen. It’s average lifespan is 20-30 years. In most taxonomies, it is classified as the only member of the genus Myiopsitta. It originates from the temperate to subtropical areas of Argentina and the surrounding countries in South America. Self-sustaining feral populations occur in many places, mainly in North America and Europe. == Description == The nominate subspecies of this parakeet is 29 cm (11 in) long on average, with a 48 cm (19 i...
eh
> Females tend to be 10–20% smaller, but can only be reliably sexed by DNA or feather testing
That's about what I remembered her telling me. lol

@ShadowWizard Or when they lay an egg :P

heh, just noticed "RADAR_PRE_LEAK_64" in my event viewer.... lol
@Tinkeringbell good point!! :P

2:06 PM
@ShadowWizard yes but I got rejected.

@JourneymanGeek :(

@ShadowWizard maybe next time. It's a bit frustrating

@Tinkeringbell could try with the contact us mail... but I fear that would be even slower.

@ShadowWizard technically they inherited the Russian cm with hashcode iirc

user302202
Speaking of hiring, I don't see Product Manager openings there... we still don't have a new friend among product managers, do we? Someone working on public Q&A specifically.

2:20 PM
can I tag the two watches question as BUG?

If you'd like?
I think I'd tag it support

Watch sent twice to same person is a bug actually, as they clearly said it's one watch per person.
So yeah, I'll go with a .
Also, I have a feeling 's attract the team attention faster.

user302202
Not obvious to me. Developers watch [bug] but they are not the ones running the swag operations.

user302202
Most swag questions are under [support].

@MSOGA the scary thought is that they went a step back, some scattered teams without focus.
Maybe that's what holding the new design back?

user302202
2:27 PM
The last mention of DAG team was in November.

@MSOGA well, pretty sure most CM's don't monitor MSE anyway on regular basis.

user302202
> Now that the DAG team is really good at roadmapping and estimating (!!!!!!), we'll know soon if this is a "within the next quarter" thing or a further off thing, at which point we can re-evaluate that call. meta.stackexchange.com/a/318301/302202

@MSOGA pretty sure DAG team is no more, having its lead go away.

user302202
Maybe its successor will be better named.

@MSOGA it was before Joe leaving (I think?) so not relevant.

user302202
2:28 PM
Swag contest for new name ideas?

hehehe
GAWD

user302202
MSOGA is already taken, obviously

2:41 PM
@ShadowWizard maybe is not a bug. Maybe they had a few spare watches and they decided to send them to the cutest users.
Look at the fact: I got one, @Mithrandir got one and the parrot got one.
They clearly sent the dupes based on user cuteness level.

@Derpy maybe lots of others... who didn't get two emails?
i.e. how you checked who got dupe messages?

@ShadowWizard so far, asked here.

I didn't get two emails
I didn't ... even get one :'(

@Bookends I think you're not the only one either. Which makes this even stranger, perhaps you could put up a comment underneath Derpy's post? meta.stackexchange.com/q/324473/369802

@Bookends you were one of the winners?

2:56 PM
@Bookends I'm in the same boat as you. I was on the survey email, but I haven't gotten anything since then

@Mithrandir was catching up on a 5-day weekend; what's this?

Hopefully the fact that we both didn't get anything is a good sign and not a bad one?

Q: One watch, two watches.. If I get two will someone get none?

SPArchaeologist"Two time's a charm"... but "two watches's an error". Apparently DHL has just started getting ready for shipment of the watches from the December swag contest. Some users already got a mail from them... ... but some got TWO. It doesn't appear to be just a dupe message - the two mails do indee...

Read here, it is probably quicker than writing it down again.

mmm
"some users?"

I got two, Tinker got two, Mith got two. Can't really confirm if there are more.

2:59 PM
6 hours ago, by Magisch
@Tinkeringbell I only got one

mmmm, lemme look into that

Also, check TL: People mentioned getting none too.

thanks for the note

don't worry.

so, @Derpy and @Tinkeringbell: do both emails mention watches on 'em?

3:02 PM
@JNat Yep

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....................

oh, just in case, don't worry about me not getting any email :)

@JNat yep, they are basically the same mail.
The only difference is the date and the waybill code
Originally I assumed it was just a dupe, until I noticed the different codes.
both mails had a link to a tracking page on the DHL site - the links are different too.
by which I means - different query string params, seem to point to different delivery data.

@Tinkeringbell would you mind forwarding both emails my way, please?

@JNat sure...
Both are headed your way. I have to go now ;)

3:10 PM
thanks!

@JNat me too

@MSOGA wait a sec..... are you Normal Human??? checking
Now all those tweets... make sense...
OMG... you are. lol
Welcome back!!!!11!!!
Umm... hope you didn't mean to stay under cover? @MSO
If so just say the word and I'll ask the messages to be moved.
@Derpy did you play this game?
Rare that you can fight yourself, isn't it? lol

@ShadowWizard he has been here as Mrs. Robinson (and that's the reason I changed my name to Bookends)

@Bookends ohhh
Well didn't know Mrs. R was Norm either, didn't occur to me he's back.

y'all gotta learn the writing patterns... Deep knowledge of the network, broad knowledge of SE staff activity, unhealthy fixation on old pop music...

@ArtOfCode with 0 reviews.

@Shog9 sure but what triggered the Normal Alarm for me is that fixation on elections across the network. ;)
And taking the bot account? That's @Derpy style. :D

Just opening the email at work to 42 pony-related emails from Derpy :P

@Shaymin may be useful in case he forgets when the new MLP season starts.

@ShadowWizard I kinda knew the whole time...I recognized the user ID as belonging to Normal Human's alternate account

@Derpy cough um, when does the new season start?

4:57 PM
@Shaymin currently not know, only know thing is that it will be the last one
very odd indeed since they clearly have plans to continue using the characters in the future.
for one, they have a movie planned for the 2020.

:c

and second, there are multiple clues that they have marketing plans for next years too
There is no way they can hope to release all the six Mane Six figures before end 2020 if they keep this pacing

I just hope it doesn't end the way Stargate Universe did xd

I mean, Pinkie Pie is the first one and she is scheduled for May
May 31, 2019
Twilight has a tentative date for August.

The unhealthy fixation might be in part observer's effect: the kind of things that the SE experience brings to mind.

5:54 PM
@ShadowWizard Indeed haha
@ShadowWizard Software engineer at a bigger company, I'm looking forward to it! Still working on a contract at the moment. I suppose your kids are doing well? I don't have any yet.
@ShadowWizard Shall I start the GoFundMe? :D

6:17 PM
@derpy @mith @tink did the tracking numbers in the watch emails show you locations? And if so, were both of the locations to you? How much info was in there?

@scohe001 both of the locations showed that they were going to me and were in Boston

Huh.
Cuz I just got a watch at my front door but I didn't receive any tracking emails

@scohe001 You're in the States, right?
I've heard more stories of people in the US just having watches pop up without emails.
I'm curious to know what is happening here :P

@Tinkeringbell yup yup. I guess that explains it then

@scohe001 Enjoy it :D

6:40 PM
Is this for the time contest?

1 hour later…
7:40 PM
@Tinkeringbell So am I - I haven't got mine yet but I also got 2 tracking e-mails, neither of which seem to suggest anything's happened

Well, I'm guessing the answer will at least have to wait until tomorrow ;)

What shipping provider are they using?
Some shippers allow recipients to sign up for alerts whenever a package gets shipped to their address

Already did that, received no further notifications.

I guess they may be using governmental postal services rather than a private shipper

DHL

46 messages moved to Chimney

That's a big sweep

Thanks

8:19 PM
@Shog9 back when users with 3k rep could cast close votes willy nilly, I'm assuming there was no limit to the number of times per day they could do that... if that's the case, did those people experience burnout from casting too many close votes? Or was the system too far different from the "voting" system we have today

@TylerH so... Probably important to remember that by the end of 2008, SO was still averaging well under a thousand questions a day. The standing record for questions-per-day was set a few days after the end of the private beta at 1411, and had stabilized soon after at a bit under 4K/week
...there just wasn't that much stuff to be closed.
Heck, most of the backlash against the way the closing system worked came from folks who were pissed off that others were depriving them of a chance to answer those precious questions

sure, the general internet culture at play... "don't ruin our fun of a fun new forum"

right
And keep in mind, these were the days of "hidden features" / "tips and tricks" / "favorite ..." questions

no fun allowed

I sure miss those days, right before "one simple trick that your doctor will HATE" ads started popping up...
I'm just wondering (and I'm sure there's a good counter argument) whether the concern about burnout can be mitigated by just letting people cast unlimited close votes; in other words, don't set them up for it by saying "Ok, you get 100 CVs now" and people will maybe not race to max out their allotted CVs... except maybe once and then after that they'll go "I guess I can just cast them now whenever I need them" and then do that
of course the potential for abuse or scripting would probably be the strongest counter argument

8:28 PM
If memory serves, when I first joined SO the top question was "what non-programming books should programmers read?"
...and the top answer was "how to win friends and influence people"

...I almost quit right then in disgust

... but thank god you didn't ...

Shogs 1 through 8 did quit...

@TylerH yeah, unlimited anything is kind of a non-starter unless there's an effective limit on what you can reasonably do anyway
When I talk about burnout, I'm not talking about just fatigue. Fatigue sucks, but it's reasonably easy to avoid unless the system itself somehow tries to trick you into it - think, slot-machine UIs and the like.
The more insidious problems are fatigue coupled with the realization that you're not actually accomplishing anything

8:31 PM
Badges!

Years ago, I would just sit down and review all the questions in my tags every day. There were only a hundred or so; it wasn't that hard. I'd answer some, close some, vote on a lot.
And when I was done, I was done - there were no more questions.
It only started to seem worthless when I couldn't do that anymore

8:42 PM
@MSOGA Is your GitHub Pages site still supported? I noticed that you moved the homepage from /index.html to /index-old.html, so direct links to the bare domain now 404.

9:08 PM
@Shog9 I think that's a much more "person to person" concern than fatigue
you're talking about a psychological breaking point

yeah - that's why I refer to it as burnout

I consider that a bad reason for not increasing limits but I can't seem to articulate my argument in a clear way right now. At least the fatigue reason (e.g. you pay less attention, make more mistakes) was more defensible than worrying that others would psychologically give up altogether due to self-induced overload... I think the average person (you especially) is far more mentally hardy than that. I think (hope) that either I am not following you exactly or there is something else at play.

It's not 'if someone burns out' rather 'at what point will someone burn out'
self-induced overload is fine for a short while, but after a while, it just gets too much, then you get stressed while already 'fatigued' and taking a break just becomes impossible and it just kind of spirals out of control

@Mithrandir24601 Yes, I think most people would be capable of just 'go til I'm bored/tired of this today' and then come back tomorrow

i prefer doing 2-3 days worth of stuff in one day

9:19 PM
@Mithrandir24601 I don't think so many people suffer existential angst that the site is growing and thus the needs are, too. If that's really the concern, then we should be educating users against that rather than artificially constraining them to avoid the root problem; let them know "it's OK if you don't clear the queue - there will always be more posts to review and new questions that need help" etc.

then doing nothing for a few days

@TylerH Yah, I'd hope and expect so. Having said that, mods can and do burn out, especially on SO, so it's not a nonexistent problem

@Mithrandir24601 Sure, but mods also have a much different mandate, that's not exactly apples to apples
we elect mods as thoroughly vetted exception handlers (usually). They have a lot more power and thus a lot more responsibility

@TylerH to be clear: I'm not averse to increasing limits where it'll actually do some good. I'm averse to increasing limits to where folks who are susceptible to this will burn out, and those who aren't are already doing a healthy amount and won't do any more.

@TylerH Yeah, definitely - closing questions isn't the most arduous of tasks and I wouldn't expect to be anything like the main cause of mod-related burnout

9:22 PM
@Shog9 Am I misremembering or didn't the temporary increase in close votes on SO actually turn out very positively?
I just don't see the group I belong to in either of those two groups you described. A middle group that won't be susceptible to such burnout, who are already doing a healthy amount, and would like to do a bit more

And... i'll admit, fixed daily caps are an incredibly crude tool for this; I'd rather go with something a bit more flexible, but don't have anything handy at the moment

Of course, I think SOCVR is a biased sample... folks in that small group are probably naturally going to be a bit more 'hardened' in that respect

@Shog9 I bet there are many many things that would be nice to have given infinite dev time :P

@Shog9 I do realize you guys are probably super busy...
But I have to make my opportunity attacks when you pass within striking distance...

9:38 PM
The big problem here is... I know there had to have been an internal discussion / ticket / trello card associated with that... But I've no idea where it's gone

Well, I sincerely wish you all the luck in finding it/getting that ball rolling again :-)

10:17 PM
@Derpy The answer is to hack the gibson.

user302202
With reviews / CVs, I tend to do a bunch for a brief period of time and then stop altogether.

user302202
Maybe it'd be better for "the system" if I did a little every day instead.

user302202
But I'd rather not. Comparison: I don't mind helping a friend move furniture between apartments, but I'd be less inclined to carry their groceries every day.

user302202
@SonictheWizardWerehog The idea of renaming the index file is to indicate it's not supported, by breaking pre-existing links.

@Derpy Some children's doll recorded kids' voices and ambient noise and uploaded it unauthenticated and unencrypted to some remote server which... was on Shodan allowing mass-unauthenticated download of the audio data.
