The situation seems to be stabilizing as I'm now back home, albeit not entirely resolved. Hopefully, things will settle down, but I'll keep you updated if anything happens.
That was scary.
I wouldn't say it's all-clear yet but it's no longer an immediate risk.

can we just not with all the cryptocurrency/blockchain sites

In my opinion the reason why a lot of new sites are not having enough committers show up and thus failing in private beta is because the new 4-month deadline is enticing people to sympathy-commit.

@Shog9 I saw a post and immediately thought of your rhetorical question. Out of curiosity, and in response to your rhetorical question (which this is replying to), how much of this advice falls into the category of "internalized some rule that never actually existed" versus actual rules that are generally accepted?
(hopefully that doesn't send you a phone notification and you can get back to it in your own time)

Sometimes, seeing advice to not answer gives me pause. Perhaps it is nothing, but then again, perhaps there is more there? Kind of why I asked. I was also hoping to catch you at a more normal time, maybe you can respond more tomorrow.

Tyler CarterJust because I can't find where this has been asked before, could someone explain the always-friday-in-iceland meme?

In general, it was a reference to fun, I believe. That was what I was trying to relate to with the Iceland meme

@ɪBᴜɢ I think he refers to the peanut gallery

That would be a good guess too

@ɪBᴜɢ eel?
@Tinkeringbell why?

@Tinkeringbell No coffee?

@ɪBᴜɢ think he meant "nuts", as in " I'm here for the community and all them crazy people", in a good way.
nuts is often replaced with peanuts.

@Alex no coffee yet and no trains either. :(

@Alex easy to fix!
!!/coffee Tink Alex

@ShadowWizard brews a cup of Latte for @Tink

7:13 AM
@Tinkeringbell no ride with Nespresso?

Yay, latte!
@ShadowWizard Thank goodness no :). He drives like he wants me dead.

Is there a command for trains?

@Tinkeringbell but he'd also be dead... lol
@Alex let's see!
!!/train
waiting

@ShadowWizard No such command 'train'.

@Alex nope ^

7:15 AM
I guess we can work from home then.

@Alex it's called Twitter. I'm feeling too lazy to go cause drama though

@Tinkeringbell Oooohhhhh, drama!

@Alex wish that were true ;) ah well, at least this one is rolling now

So the command worked after all.

No, this is called 'schedule'

7:18 AM
@Tinkeringbell no meta for the train company? :(

@ShadowWizard Hahaha no.
Train is really short so really busy as well. I kinda love the judgmental looks I get for not wearing a business suit but travelling first class

@Tinkeringbell Judgmental look

@Tinkeringbell first class in train?? Never saw that, but I didn't ride a train for years.... Also what's the point of short train? lol
The whole point is having many seats and as much people riding it as possible.... no?

@ShadowWizard short train usually means the other part has a defect, so they only sent one part to ride this route. That way, they can boost their stats by saying 'this percentage of our trains was on time' as they just count whether or not there was a train, not if it was the entire train
First class is okayish, it has more room and single seats so no elbow wrestling. Also, bigger chance of actually getting a seat under circumstances like this.

@Tinkeringbell huh, that's... devious. :P

7:27 AM
But all of that doesn't make the train ride on time. And if trains just were on time and all riding more often, we could get rid of overpriced first class travel

I hope the company pays for your train rides? Even first class? @Tink

@ShadowWizard Yeah. They should really adjust those metrics. It's like counting lines of code to determine a developers worth

Also... how goes the driving classes?

@ShadowWizard Yep.

@Tinkeringbell yeah, easy to abuse.

7:29 AM
@ShadowWizard Better, I've started the process of getting a lease car but it's slow (right now I'm waiting for my promotion to actually be in a system)

@Tinkeringbell oh, so you can drive again, if only having a car? Good to hear! :)

Does the car have first class?

@ShadowWizard Well, not really... I'm now driving automatic transmission like some kind of disabled person, and I'm still afraid it's only a proverbial bandaid that'll fall off too someday. But I don't want to take trains for the rest of my life, so even though driving is probably always going to be a problem I'm just going to force myself, otherwise it won't happen ever
@Alex wish that were true. Then I could get perhaps a car with a driver :P
A GOOD driver

Good drivers are no fun.

@Alex sure

7:33 AM
@Alex Less mini heart attacks and stress too though

(that's inside a car ^)

Looks more like a bus

looks oversized and unpractical

@Tinkeringbell Well, you can't expect fun to be free.

@Tinkeringbell nah, limousine. Or should be. Google gave it. ;)

7:35 AM
@Alex Oh sure. There's other ways than driving recklessly and crashing other people to have fun though ;)

@Magisch like most things designed only for very rich people, e.g. big gold watches.

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, like causing trouble on Stack Exchange chat.

@ShadowWizard Never understood that. Even if I was the #1 richest person on earth, why would I make my car needlessly clunky and unpractical?

@Magisch show off

or wear a giant gold watch? Gold's heavy, and my cellphone has a watch on it

7:36 AM
To show people you have the money and power.

yeah but why

@Magisch humans
:D

there are more productive ways of showing off
"Look at this huge charity I just founded"

@Magisch To avoid judgmental glances when travelling first class :P

7:37 AM
if I'm rich why do I care

I think the looks you'd get for that might be even more judgmentaly.

@Tinkeringbell taxi? ;)

If you're not, you don't care either, trust me :P

Our cloud service provider has a major storage outage last night. Looks like it still isn't resolved :(

In general the whole showing off thing has extremely limited usefulness

7:38 AM
@ShadowWizard Took one once, when trains were absolute horror. Was fun, but expensive!!

I can understand it in situations where you stand to gain substantially like e.g interviews

@Tinkeringbell no refund from company? Not 100%, but even 50% should make it tolerable, no?

@rene Twitter rant? Zero star review?

@rene Azure? Amazon?

@ShadowWizard Oh, I got it back 100 percent ;) that was the fun part... I took three other people and told them they didn't have to pay anything.

7:40 AM
If not, maybe worth moving to one of those, i.e. big provider? @rene
Small providers can't really assure 100% uptime, they're just not big enough to have the required resources. IMO of course.
@Tinkeringbell omg.... so why don't you do it more often?

@ShadowWizard I can only lay claim to a small amount it money for travelling each month :P

@Tinkeringbell ohh.. so how many taxi rides per month? Even if one or two, use it. :D

This was Den Bosch - Eindhoven, and it already cost 80/90 euros.
I can do six or seven of those a month
Providing I don't take any trains

@Tinkeringbell whoa. That's lots of money. lol

But that part doesn't get me home ;)
@ShadowWizard Especially if you think it's not even that far a drive.

7:44 AM
> 36 min (38.2 km) via A2
Is this correct? ^

Sounds about right :)

Here such a taxi ride costs about 150 NIS, which are 36.47 Euro
I do it sometimes when car in garage.
Got app for taxi, just opening the app, typing where I need to go, and a taxi arrives in matter of minutes, usually.

Sounds like a much better price :P. But perhaps gas and cars and licencing and maintenance are cheaper there too?

@Tinkeringbell not at all, cars cost twice than in USA, not sure about Europe. Gas also cost twice or thrice than in USA.

@ShadowWizard In this case, I was at the train station. There's usually a few taxis around on big stations that you can just walk up to

7:47 AM
(due to 100% tax on both.)

As a Californian I was astounded at the low fuel prices here in Texas.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case here. But I'd have to look it up. It'll have to wait, I have to exit this train and get walking to the office. BBL!

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog yeah, I was amazed at the overall cheap gas price when visiting USA few years ago. Drove a lot.
@Tinkeringbell Have fun!

8:01 AM
@ShadowWizard nope, a dutch local firm. Due to legal stuff we can't shop outside of the EU
@Tinkeringbell sure, be my guest ;)

@rene that's... sad. But suppose Amazon/Microsoft/Google would have local branch in Europe which provides the cloud, won't you be able to use it?
(i.e. servers are actually in EU)

well, the case is that American law allows that data that is stored in the EU still needs to be transferred to the US on demand.

oh
bummer
So you must use EU cloud which somtimes rains.

@Tinkeringbell soon it'll be true, cars won't have human drivers.

@ShadowWizard what about the "Things I should like" category?

@Tinkeringbell Unfortunately not. Cars don't own their drivers, people own cars (and sometimes other people than the owner drive them).

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog yeah, which was then suspended for like 100 years.

@Shadow Worth mentioning that as at least two people picked the canned site-specific close reason, your custom reason got overridden.

10:27 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog all good, my only intention is to have it closed and deleted ASAP.

@ShadowWizard Mods would suspend each spammer for some time, then upon merging the suspension periods would be added up. (e.g. merging an account suspended for 3 days into an account suspended for 5 days results in the newly merged account being suspended for 8 days).
@ShadowWizard If ASAP is what you were looking for, selecting the canned reason would take less time than typing up the custom reason.

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog the custom reason was to let some steam off

In any case, the accounts are not unregistered, cookie-based. I checked both the accounts and both are registered.

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog there are no unregistered accounts on MSE
