12:03 AM
@ɪBᴜɢ There's a few reasons - we might not be awake or notice....
@ɪBᴜɢ yes
Modding on mobile is terrible

I feel the mobile web is enough for me, so I don't like the app

I use the desktop/responsive UI, and I will sometimes pass over flags or actionable items cause its not possible to do it right
@ɪBᴜɢ just as true for mobile web

but mobile web is at least much better than the app

Its useless for mod tools.

I think the app could have been designed like Steam - i.e. just another shell wrapped around web pages :)

12:08 AM
heh, kinda like chatsey was?

@ɪBᴜɢ WebView and the SE mobile interface just weren't well-designed at the time the app came out

@JourneymanGeek but shouldn't be useless for regular tasks (close delete etc.)

Also, more or less this is one huge critique I have of SO...
they have a bit of a tendancy to get distracted by SHINY!

@JourneymanGeek meaning?

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog well, a fundamental issue for SO (the company) is that they basically get super focused on $new thing...
Then suddenly lose interest

12:11 AM
@JourneymanGeek they get super focused on $$$ new thing

@ɪBᴜɢ I don't think its just money
Careers, sure, but there was probably a lot more going on there.

And Teams and SO Enterprise

Docs? Awesome idea, but as something that didn't work, ended up being a drain
@ɪBᴜɢ Well, the good thing with teams and SO Enterprise is it actually trickles down to QA proper
You can't sell Teams and Enterprise without a healthy Q&A site

that's good

But with the apps...

12:14 AM
oh no, just cut off the app team and spare some hands to mobile web

lol
don't forget the SO app...

that'd kill two stones with one bird

@ɪBᴜɢ that's vaguely what they did.
The SE app's a bit complicated though.
The SO app was ... a bit of an odd thing.

s/odd/wildly unnecessary/
one of the more we-do-what-we-want decisions I've seen 'em take

@ArtOfCode I have no clue whose idea it was, or what they were thinking ;p
(Actually I have entirely unfounded theories... ;p)

12:21 AM
Maybe there'll soon be a SO Jobs app 'cuz jobs $$$

@ArtOfCode makes no sense outside marketing at the time was a bit obsessed with the SO branding
@ɪBᴜɢ the winds have changed
Might have happened if SO was a thing
@ArtOfCode also, probably didn't expect the massive pushback on SO :p

now alongside LinkedIn and GlassDoor there's SO J!

@ɪBᴜɢ that's one of those things...
as a management major (for all my sins) ... that never made sense to me.
I mean, yeah, there's all the talk about how SO's nicer and more ethical and focused but...
its a hell of a crowded market
and we're a chihhuaua in a cage full of 800 pound gorillas...

12:35 AM
@ArtOfCode What I've heard (from before working here) is they wanted the brand recognition. I've had people who know I work here see me in my SE shirt and say "I thought you worked for SO?"
There's a chunk of people who don't realize that SE is SO.

The easy solution to that would've been to upload the existing app again but call it "Stack Overflow" instead of "Stack Exchange"

I also know people who use the site frequently and don't know what SO is. I was one of them. ;)
We have a branding problem.

@Catija that's vaguely self propagating ;p

Rob
That's SO SE!

We'll just rebrand as "stack" (lowercase intended) and confuse the crap out of anyone using Slack.

12:49 AM
.....
I was going to half jokingly suggest the same thing.

And then we'll branch off from Web Apps a site for Slack. Which will be Slack.stack.com.

@JourneymanGeek I'm pretty sure that @Shog9 would protest.

and then folks have a slack for stack users and call it stack.slack.com....
(slack baffles me a bit, since I know its history...)
cause it was literally a spinoff from a failed MMORPG, and not a particularly good chat system

And, of course, we have the Slack integration for Teams...

12:54 AM
Anyone remember the days when the company was called "Stack Overflow Internet Services"?

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog that was literally when it was just the trilogy no?

@JourneymanGeek SE 1.0 existed at that time too

Pretty early days ;p

1:14 AM
@JourneymanGeek Nah, that's totally normal for any IT company.

1:25 AM
@b_jonas well... google plus....
true
but its still a core issue ;)

Rob

An attention getting logo so they'll remember the stack (with two additional photos underneath, to clairify the top photo):

@JourneymanGeek Ok, now you're just focusing on only the latest thing. Google also disconintued Google Square, Google Sets, Google Wave, their own make of Android phones. :-)

namely sunday 1.00pm - 2.00pm and 6.30pm - 6.45pm every week

8 pants, 8 work sweaters, 8 work t-shirts, mom's uniforms (they require a separate load of laundry + ironing). Then there was towels and bed linen.
So I think it was 4 loads of laundry, most of it needed to hang to dry, and then the folding (UGH)
I definitely spent more than an hour on that ;)

!!/approve 2607

@Tinkeringbell The clothes aren't compatible with a gas/electric dryer?

9:13 AM
Makes wrinkles.
And is bad for clothing in general.
Plus it requires a load of energy that isn't necessarily necessary

why do you have to do the whole family's laundry?

@Magisch Because mom and dad were gone for the weekend, and mom didn't have time to do it on Thursday/Friday

@Tinkeringbell Not if you take them out immediately; that said, our dryers here have a "wrinkle shield" feature that tumbles the clothes every 5 minutes to reduce wrinkles

@Tinkeringbell 3 people other then mom/dad live in your house

@Magisch Yep. Tell that to my brothers. Not much has improved since that IPS question
They 'cook' occasionally (fries, hamburgers, microwave meals).
And at least they clean the kitchen after. But not much improvement otherwise.

9:16 AM
your parents are doing them a massive disservice by letting them get away with it

@Magisch I don't know. The oldest is soon going to live on his own again, and last time he did manage well, he didn't make a huge mess or something.
They can cook, they can clean ... they just don't do it.

Imagine you have a SQL view with a INSTEAD OF UPDATE trigger which updates other views that also have such a trigger
now imagine you're me, debugging a small thing. You're 4 triggers deep in the chain and start questioning life choices

I don't know that much SQL to fully understand the horror here ;)
What does an INSTEAD OF UPDATE trigger do?

DROP INSTEAD OF UPDATE
umm, I don't think that's how it works...

@Tinkeringbell imagine you have a view called parrots
that view is SELECT * FROM table_parrots
now if you do UPDATE Parrots SET name = 'Tinkeringbell' what it normally does is automatically resolve the view to find the table to update
This works as long as you're not trying to update derivative fields, like if there was parrot.Name + ' - ' + parrot.Species AS NameWithSpecies and you tried to update UPDATE Parrots SET NameWithSpecies = 'something' then it'd break

@Magisch have to do a small change to some pre-existing code. One of the changes involves creating a view on a SharePoint list. The view should have a specific ID.
Guess what? you can't set the ID

because you can't update derivative fields or fields derived from multiple base tables in one go. Now a INSTEAD OF UPDATE trigger allows you to specify a SQL Script that will be executed instead of the normal UPDATE behavior...
So you could, say, catch that error case and say that if someone tries to update NameWithSpecies that it splits the two fields apart and updates each field seperately then
Now, if you have a trigger that customizes update behavior on one view and in doing that UPDATE's another view, which in turn has a trigger...
you can see how that can keep chaining

2:42 PM
Normally, you would have two options:
a) realize that what you are currently trying makes no sense and try something else
b) stick to you eldritch idea and delve in the magic world of reverse engineering and private methods call in a vane attempt to set a property with no setter.
Guess what has been chosen for me

Is the ID what it says in the name, i.E a unique identifier?
If so, you should never set an ID, just get one and then note it whereever you need to reference it after

it is called BaseViewID, it real purpose is unclear. It is pretty evident that:

@Derpy There is a point at which I question the sanity of the requirements writer

a) SharePoint may be using it to give a "type" to the view - ie, the number may not be random - at least for out-of-box list views
b) while you CAN specify an id if you create a view using the xml based declarative approach, the c# api does not support it - meaning that the only methods that allow for it are INTERNAL
(and no, you can't use the declarative approach to add a view to an EXISTING list - it only works for list instance / schemas)
c) you can't update the "id" after creation
d) when creating a view programmatically, the new id is semi-random. You can even get existing ones if you are very lucky....
given that you can't really control the view "ID" but you can control the view "Name"...
what would you use to identify/refer to a view in your code?

@Derpy 5min google-fu says it's the UID for views within a viewCollection
So do not manually assign and do not set
It's akin to i.E a Primary Key in SQL.

2:56 PM
@Magisch re-read point d) just above. Also, I'm not the one who had the idea, just the lucky executor ;_;

@Derpy Create a view, read its ID, use that in your code
ID's should be static so once you created one, it should be the same until that view is gone

@Mgetz written requirement, analysis or even basic "can this even work" questioning are so last season.... we use the improvisation pattern: Do not think, follow the flow, hope it works :P

@Tinkeringbell while paused? Doubt it. ;)

@Magisch did I mention that the "known ID" are stored as "public const string" in a cs file in the project? Meaning they have to be know at compile time?

@Mgetz I mean if the requirements writer thinks they can dictate implementation details then I question their sanity starting out

3:00 PM
Horrible design ^^

@Derpy wait, are the view IDs assigned at runtime?
or at development-time, when you make the view?
If the view IDs generate at runtime, just make a function that creates a dynamic listing instead of having them all sit in a file
or torch the codebase with napalm and added magnesium and then start over

@Magisch This happens so often I'd be quite rich if I'd gotten a 10 dollars for every story I've seen that did this
@Derpy so your team has decayed into 'dysfunctional'?

@Magisch you can assign them at development time ONLY if the view is created using the list schema xml based declarative approach, and that is not applicable to an existing list. So, basically, in this case you can't know the identifiers at design time.
@Magisch again, I wasn't as lucky as Louis. Never "been given the option to choose"

So what do they want you to do?
Bypass application security principles? Reflection hack into a private method?
And which PO will take responsibility for the subtle and near undebuggable issues this is liable to cause?

In order:
they expect this:
and as for the second question, remember the first development rule:
whatever damage is caused to a system by poor planning, unrealistic expectations, wrong schedules or anything similar... the poor soul that will debug the code to try to find out the issue is still the dev.
Also the one who will pull his/her hair off I guess.

3:15 PM
or chill as you spend 20+ hours debugging something unnecessarily
after all, it's their paid time to you not yours

@Derpy lol you get overtime, I'm federally exempt from it.

@Mgetz ok, I guess? Can't really comment without knowing reasons.

@Derpy These are the rules basically it's about money, the big tech companies didn't want to pay overtime so they got us exempted specifically in federal law.

@Mgetz maybe it is once again a cultural problem... but where does that paper claim you are exempt from overtime? All I see is that you are exempt from being payed for working overtime
WHICH IS PRETTY DIFFERENT
again, may be the expectations I have from living here... but that seems to mean "we are already so kind to pay your regular work hours and give you a job, do you really expect us to pay overtime too?"

And even in that case, I fear that such option would translate in "we own your soul" in my country.

@Derpy oh I'm not exempt from working it, I just refuse
if you're not going to pay me for time worked I'm not going to work it unless it's my fault
If they want to fire me over that, fine
