@ArtOfCode What I've heard (from before working here) is they wanted the brand recognition. I've had people who know I work here see me in my SE shirt and say "I thought you worked for SO?"
There's a chunk of people who don't realize that SE is SO.

that view is SELECT * FROM table_parrots
now if you do UPDATE Parrots SET name = 'Tinkeringbell' what it normally does is automatically resolve the view to find the table to update
This works as long as you're not trying to update derivative fields, like if there was parrot.Name + ' - ' + parrot.Species AS NameWithSpecies and you tried to update UPDATE Parrots SET NameWithSpecies = 'something' then it'd break
@Magisch have to do a small change to some pre-existing code. One of the changes involves creating a view on a SharePoint list. The view should have a specific ID.
because you can't update derivative fields or fields derived from multiple base tables in one go. Now a INSTEAD OF UPDATE trigger allows you to specify a SQL Script that will be executed instead of the normal UPDATE behavior...
So you could, say, catch that error case and say that if someone tries to update NameWithSpecies that it splits the two fields apart and updates each field seperately then
Now, if you have a trigger that customizes update behavior on one view and in doing that UPDATE's another view, which in turn has a trigger...
Normally, you would have two options: a) realize that what you are currently trying makes no sense and try something else b) stick to you eldritch idea and delve in the magic world of reverse engineering and private methods call in a vane attempt to set a property with no setter.
a) SharePoint may be using it to give a "type" to the view - ie, the number may not be random - at least for out-of-box list views
b) while you CAN specify an id if you create a view using the xml based declarative approach, the c# api does not support it - meaning that the only methods that allow for it are INTERNAL
(and no, you can't use the declarative approach to add a view to an EXISTING list - it only works for list instance / schemas)
c) you can't update the "id" after creation
d) when creating a view programmatically, the new id is semi-random. You can even get existing ones if you are very lucky....
given that you can't really control the view "ID" but you can control the view "Name"...
what would you use to identify/refer to a view in your code?
@Mgetz written requirement, analysis or even basic "can this even work" questioning are so last season.... we use the improvisation pattern: Do not think, follow the flow, hope it works :P
@Magisch did I mention that the "known ID" are stored as "public const string" in a cs file in the project? Meaning they have to be know at compile time?
@Magisch you can assign them at development time ONLY if the view is created using the list schema xml based declarative approach, and that is not applicable to an existing list. So, basically, in this case you can't know the identifiers at design time.

and as for the second question, remember the first development rule:
whatever damage is caused to a system by poor planning, unrealistic expectations, wrong schedules or anything similar... the poor soul that will debug the code to try to find out the issue is still the dev.

@Derpy These are the rules basically it's about money, the big tech companies didn't want to pay overtime so they got us exempted specifically in federal law.
@Mgetz maybe it is once again a cultural problem... but where does that paper claim you are exempt from overtime? All I see is that you are exempt from being payed for working overtime
