@JourneymanGeek *clap clap clap* nice answer, I've only read half way through it

@JourneymanGeek maybe

@FreezePhoenix actually - that's a pretty simple trick I use with posts like that.
basically if they have points to address, address the points ;p

I saw a decline in number of blatantly off-topic questions on MSE in the past few days, is it just because I didn't check as frequently as before?

@ɪBᴜɢ oh I think we have
stats say I deleted about 30 this week and I only did 1-2 a day the past few ;)

that sounds supportive

._.
oops
I closed a question, then somehow reopened it instead of deleting it...
then reclosed and delted.
oops

I think at peak time we get up to 30 OT a day

@ɪBᴜɢ I'd guess the folks who got "the email" are tapering off
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog read ... about 3 lines up
also - short answer - "oops"

1:00 AM
some day I recall wandering on MSE for 16 hrs, and saw 19 those in total, so I estimate that day there could be ~30

(also lol, I KNEW someone would ask ;) )

@Sonic Do you speak Spanish or did you just use Google Translate?

@ɪBᴜɢ Google Translate (and I translated it back to English to make sure it was accurate)

lol, I remember translating one text back and forth and got hilarious results years ago

1:05 AM
Que?
I know some Spanish, if things need translated

@ArtOfCode Someone posted an off-topic question in Spanish, so I Google translated my canned comment to Spanish before posting it.

ah

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog ¿Por que?

@FreezePhoenix no lo sé, tal vez porque es conveniente

@ɪBᴜɢ ¡No son conveniente! (It is not convenient!)

1:08 AM
... english please!

@FreezePhoenix dije "tal vez" (I said "maybe")

english ok lor!

ugh. I have a few things I need to do but I'm putting off cause I've had generally poor luck with it and feels thankless, and something I want to do before I go to india but can't cause I'm waiting on a package

peut-être pouvons dire francais? :P

;)
I asked nicely

moderator abuse! mimicking new users first encounter moderating actions

Doesn't that mean the moderator is being abused?

@FreezePhoenix depends. English has many ways to interpret :)

@ɪBᴜɢ that's the spray bottle of moderation.... ;p

which sadly are no longer the lovely rocket scientist designed things of my youth

I'm referring to the fact that both your answer and mine got downvotes.

oh
I don't really care

/shrug I don't either, it just means I lost my ability to downvote. Lol you wouldn't care it's 2 rep against your 46K

and I got that by not focusing on votes ;)

Is information as to what tags are considered "intrinsic" for each site in the SE network considered to be "private information"? I was about to ask a question asking which tags are considered "intrinsic" for all sites, but I found this post, and it says that the info is only available to moderators, not to the public.

I have no idea. Nor have I looked it up before ._.

@Shog9 Would be nice if I got an SE perspective on that.
@JourneymanGeek If you wouldn't mind, could you please check if is indeed an intrinsic tag for SU? I use it as an example in several places and I want to check if it is indeed correct.

it would , or :p

._.
sure. Once I work out where to look ;)

@JourneymanGeek Says so in the post I linked

3:06 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog no
it isn't

status-maroon-tags-are-removed-with-the-redesign

@JourneymanGeek Have to get my diagram editor out...but what is intrinsic to SU?

... lots of complicated tag regex blacklists
its a path to madness.
and I'm not sure its fine to share?

@JourneymanGeek Will have to wait for Shog to respond, but for now I'll use the example there of on Graphic Design.
Not much space in the box that mentions it in my flowchart, so I'd prefer to use a site that has a common two-letter abbreviation (e.g. SO, SU, SF, AU, etc.)

3:11 AM
(and honestly - I don't/can't tell the difference between a blacklisted and intristic tag)

@JourneymanGeek Maybe SU has none

untagged for example is blacklisted (everywhere)
but is that intristic?

and the possible intristic tags are in the same format.
OH
I guess we don't
shrug

@JourneymanGeek Why isn't blacklisted? It's been recreated after getting removed quite a few times, so I wonder why it's not on the blacklist. Has SE not been paying attention to MSU?

3:14 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog getting something blacklisted is a pain

@JourneymanGeek Monica Cellio says that a good idea to get a site-specific feature implemented is for a moderator there to escalate it to SE via a CM message...has that been done?

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog quite frankly - the CMs are overloaded and we have reasonable ways to deal with it.
so I'd rather not.
If it was self serve, sure
but we have too many tags that needs it

@JourneymanGeek I guess that's why SU prefers to have the community remove tags while SO prefers to have them burninated

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog we have a robust workaround for it ;p
which is sometimes me slowly chipping away at a tag over a lunch break or a long boring shift XD
Also for most part, unless we have a serious emergency, for most part SU can run with very little CM intervention.
We'd probably need one full time dealing with our tag issues XD

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog from what I can tell, sites launch with an intrinsic tag equal to their API parameter

3:25 AM
Also and on Anime & Manga, obviously

I suspect they're used the same way
Its a bit like R/A and spam flags
its the 'same' only different

and on SO
enough trial and error... @_@;

@andmyself though the question is intristic or blacklisted

3:42 AM
just a super duper very wild assumption that if there are no meta discussions about it, then it's probably intrinsic

That's MSO, and still doesn't say reject 'em.

Last paragraph of the sparsely-upvoted seventh answer does not a policy make.

Eh. The right question to me is 'does this edit have value'
As a duplicate, it's an artifact people may find, and copyediting is useful

6:09 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog Um... I'm pretty sure that our reopen queue cup doth not runneth over here on MSE.

@Catija Yeah, I noticed you gave it a binding "Leave Closed" review.

It's OK for people to actually have something to do in the queues... can't get those badges without them.
Only thing in the list... easy to find.

@Catija True, but if alexolut wants to edit the post to make it reopenable, he can't. (Though as he has 250+ rep he can vote to reopen.)
So I guess my argument only applies for posts where the author has less than 250 rep.

If it's a dupe and it's really, really obviously a dupe, probably not a concern, either.

6:29 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog who would have someone with more rep looking it over anyway....
And I suspect S Jade only noticed it cause I edited it to add a additional dupe target....

Why does changing dupe targets bump posts anyway? The only reason I can see is for backward compatibility with older dupe closures where editing dupe targets would involve editing the post (since the notice was edited into the body by the Community user).

What if other people disagree with the new dupe target, @sonic?
@SmokeDetector fp. The question is literally asking for it.

@Tinkeringbell 'de-' can mean 'en-'

strange. the online dictionaries say they're antonyms

De- can do a lot of things.
What does "denude" mean?
Is it to undo the nudeness, or to enable it?

I didn't even know that was a word :/

Well me neither
I learned it when I learned that de- can do a lot of things
Closing Tink's thought as a duplicate
Also a decompound leaf is not un-compound, it's actually a gathering of compounded leaves
And that'd be the bell. Class dismissed

Hahaha but in the case of de and encrypting, there's a difference ;)

10:55 AM
Sure

In that case, the symbol 'de' is understood to mean undo

Yep, and that's the most common use
Basically, don't try to understand how morphemes work. Just use them
They tend to date back to older languages and/or very old words so couple of thousand years basically screws any consistency

Yep, only use words when you know someone can't misinterpret them ;)
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I think there's some words that have switched meaning from positive to negative and vice versa.

And some words that have found entirely different and unrelated meanings

کثیف used to mean "dense and thick", now it means "filthy"

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ this is why I randomly guessed last night that "decrement" was the opposite of "increment"

I can't for the love of me think of English thingies right now
@Mithrandir The most common uses you've encountered are de- indicating reversal or subtraction, so I guess it follows naturally
@Tinkeringbell Fathom's meaning is actually pretty fathomable

Q: Is strict moderating discouraging newer members to add to the community?

miepI'm now on StackExchange for several weeks, having asked few questions and answered some. Now there's something I observed (in worldbuilding, but in other StackExchange-sites too) that moderators are being really strict towards newer members. Don't get me wrong, I'm very thankful for their work. ...

Well, riddle me this: What drove you to the site in the first place?

3:45 PM
Riddle me this: if long-standing members are what makes the site flourish, why does Stack Exchange focus all their efforts towards keeping the new ones?
(apologies for my bad mood)

Riddle me that: What disappoints you from participating in other forum/Q&A sites?

Is this post only naa or r/a: meta.stackexchange.com/a/323012/364003? I am not sure but as a non-native speaker the sentence seems not really to make sense.

other than Stack Exchange? Quora's about opinions rather than facts, and Y/A ... no need for words.
@MEEisJohannGambolputty... I'd validate an R/A flag

I'd vote for one too, but as the r/a flag is more destructive than the naa flag (and is faster declined...) I decided to ask here first

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... The sentence doesn't make sense, but it might be a misquoted inspirational quip, the all caps means it's shouting, which is arguably rude, but they are not shouting at the OP but rather suggest that they shout; a confusing nonsense answer. It's safe to say it's NAA, for "rude" it's your flag. It appears that rude (or foolish) is the intention.

@Rob okay, changed my flag to naa. r/a might be declined for being too aggressive

Rob
4:13 PM
There exists a chance it would be disputed, it ought not to be "not helpful" but that is possible. Presumably it would be "helpful" and a credit to you. But NAA is reasonably certain to be helpful, and still a credit to your flagging record. --- But I speak from the position of CHQ and not as the Meta Moderator. Generally try to flag as strong as possible, but don't over-flag.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword with email in answer, potentially bad keyword in answer (86): How to locate a phone without user knowing by Dominic Sgt thompson on android.SE

Rob
It depends on the site too, some want precision and some are simply happy to have the flag and figure out what it should have been; and make their own decision. Sometimes there will be an edit made in the grace period which flushes the flags, so getting an additional one (even from a different category) is helpful. The worst is custom Mod flag when clearly you ought to have used a predefined choice; but some Moderators are forgiving on that point too. I'm active on a couple of dozen
sites where it's easy to experience differences and difficult to remember them all. 🤪

This post. No big problem, but the title says "lazy homework questions". I am not sure whether this should be changed and I would normally leave it, but the new CoC explicitly calls out "lazy" as a term that should be avoided, even when applied to content. Maybe change it to "effortless"?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad ip for hostname in answer, potentially bad keyword in answer (1): When exactly is "GPSTimeStamp"? ✏️ by Amelia_s on photo.SE

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... I think of it this way... it's not referring to any specific question but it's being used to restrict the sort of homework questions. It's not talking about all if them, just some. If you want to edit it to say low-effort or something like that, feel free... but I don't think we're outright banning specific words like that. "Effortless" generally means easy, not lazy.
> She performed her dance routine effortlessly.
This means she performed so well, it looked easy. It doesn't mean that she performed poorly because she didn't try.

@Catija I would not have suggested this, if there had not been the recent *The CoC eats zombies"-post.
Yeah, sorry, low-effort might be better
-----
@Catija do you know what happened with [this](https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/202772/how-to-discourage-lazy-homework-questions-and-their-answers/323012#323012) post? I flagged it as r/a, retracted the flag and flagged as naa. Now the naa flag is helpful and the r/a is disputed. Is this because a mod disputed all red flags?

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... that post was referring to specific types of users as zombies, which I see as being quite different. But something like low-effort has the side benefit of being more accurate, so don't feel bad about editing for that reason.

4:49 PM

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Normally, I wouldn't (propose to) change this. Only due to the zombie-post, the explicit call-out in the CoC and the recent bump of this question, I asked for this.
(So I wouldn't search for posts containing possible keywords, etc.)
@Rob your version is probably better.

Rob
5:05 PM
Thanks, it clarifies the expectations in the title; politely.

No, I actually kind of object to the whole "lazy" being impolite
There's a middle ground, and something doesn't have to be polite not to be impolite

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ unfortunately the Code of Conduct explicitely calls this out as unacceptable behaviour

If someone is slacking off, and pushing work they're supposed to do onto others, then it's lazy.
Any other label will be noncomperhensive or inaccurate.
We don't have to rip the language of negative connotations to remain in the polite territory

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Don't tell this me, I agree with you that this behaviour is bad, unacceptable and even rude to others. You could though propose a change to the CoC and ask for this to explicit example to be removed/changed. They even stated that it is intended as a changeable document.

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog I don't think any numbers you get will tell you the whole story
Unless it's something extreme like a 10 to 1 ratio between Looks OK and Nuke
Focus on a certain timeline, or heck maybe even certain tags, and that could be interpreted as something

10:45 PM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog all "looks ok" does is dequeue

@Shog9 ...and dismiss NAA and VLQ flags

Sure

You might have 5, or 6, or 7 people who agree that the answer should be deleted, but 1, or 2, or 3 can outweigh them all.

Sure. Alternately 7 people with 15 rep can put the same post in queue 7 times.

@Shog9 No? Can't a post only go to the queue once, and then after that review completes, subsequent flags go to moderators?

10:48 PM
It's slightly more complicated than that
For starters, ALL VLQ/NAA flags go to moderators. There's a brief delay (which moderators can override), but assuming the flag lasts more than the delay then mods can handle even the first flag
Second, AFAIK there's some edge-case surrounding edits wherein a post can enter review more than once, thought I don't immediately recall how that works.

@Shog9 In the 1-5 in favor of keeping example I give in the question, the post wasn't added by a user flagging, but by the system creating the task since it failed the system's quality test.

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog That would also generate a moderator flag, btw

Okay, can you please explain to me why the system was implemented this way? Why was it decided to give "Looks OK" reviews much more weight than "Recommend Deletion" reviews in the final review decision?

What answer are you looking for here?
I can give you a history spanning multiple years and multiple decisions
Or I can sketch out the underlying philosophy
Or I can just summarize why it usually works

@Shog9 An answer to my meta question, with the normal explanations that you give. In other words, a mix of the above three.

Your meta question isn't a support question; it is a discussion that poses multiple questions
And... To put it bluntly, you have a history of wasting my time on these things. The vast bulk of the history and associated discussion is already available on meta; I kinda suspect you've already read some of it, and could easily find the rest if your motivation were purely curiosity.
I'm not going to spend a half-hour summarizing 4 years of history so that you can argue with it
You seem to believe the thresholds should be changed. You may be right - on some sites. But if that's your goal, then you don't need an answer to this question; you need to gather examples from the sites which aren't working well and ask for approval from their membership for the change.
It requires almost no effort on my part to change these things if there's good reason to do so.
