@Shog9 In a July 2013 podcast, you mentioned a feature where if questions that are "popular" get closed, it sends an email to the team. Back in October 2013, this used to generate a revision entry "A notice was sent to community@stackexchange.com about a popular question being closed." Today, on the question histories where this entry used to show, it no longer shows. Does this feature still exist?

I'm disgusted that students (AKA the primary source of homework questions) are now specifically included as a target audience for Stack Overflow.

this "welcoming" question...

As someone that doesn't feed nearly enough students, I feel unwelcome
(in before the word "student" gets banned as insulting)
(FTR: I'm exaggerating a little)

Wow, I feel like I'm too biased answering the "welcoming" questions considering I don't think "downvoted to oblivion" is about "welcoming"...

Votes are an essential part of Stack Exchange's system. Comments are volatile and third class. /s

@JohnDvorak Merely being a student doesn't necessarily mean that you'll only ask homework questions.

7:17 AM
True
I still think SO should stick to "enthusiasts" so that it doesn't encourage homework questions.

@JohnDvorak To be fair, SE did refuse to migrate the Math in Russian site from hashcode.ru to SE 2.0 because they were adamant on allowing homework questions on their site.

nice

Hmm.. as an undergraduate student, I didn't ask a question on SO because I found all the answers I wanted
(until now I also haven't asked...)

Well, just cause you're a student dosen't mean ou can't take advantage of SE - just don't dump your homework on it

So... enthusiastic students? :)

@FreezePhoenix I see you have joined in the last 12 months. That explain why you didn't get the joke. Let's just say that StackExchange had a little problem with a self powered UPS in the past...
for more details, see
82
Q: What happens when you plug a UPS into itself?

Tim PostUPSey daisy; so we had a little ... incident ... Pretty sure that has power. We're past that now, and things are returning to normal. It's only appropriate that we take a moment to think about the folks that got pulled out of bed and worked their knuckles to the bone to get things back up and...

@rene Well, I think that when the files were moved SharePoint just created some FOLDERS with the same names as the original libraries - after all, you can't have a library inside another library.
When those folders were moved back, they were left as is: simple folders, no longer libraries.

9:32 AM
shared pointing

@Derpy Thanks for that... It isn't really helpful for my productivity today :P

Now, since SharePoint site collection internal "file system" structure allows you to add files/folder wherever you want, even where it doesn't make sense at all....
the final result is that now the site root contains some unneeded folders that aren't normally accessible thru the standard UI.

maybe you have some pointers to share with the team responsible

Also, the simple existence of those folders means that it is now impossible to create libraries with those names (a library is backed by a folder by the same name, but if that folder already exist ... creation crash)
@Magisch ?

I was wondering... about the package distribution servers.
Am I right in my understanding that most of the update work is manual right? Meaning there is somewhere a poor cursed soul (or more than one probably) whose purpose on this world is to go around and update outdated packages in the repository?

@Derpy Not an expert, but it looks like the update process is driven by package maintainers for a particular distro, so it's not that centralized. E.g., Packaging Teams at wiki.debian.org/Teams

Welcome to Meta, where the points do not matter

I realize this may take delicate wording, but why are all the personal questions on the developer wording forcing me to declare my person as an identity?

I think they're looking for demographic data
Although I was mildly uncomfortable with the mental illness questions

Mental illness questions? I only saw disability questions
And the ability to identify as an asian, when i'm white.

@Magisch I think I answered there "I'm totally sane"

6:58 PM
I get that it's census data, and I understand what an identity is, and respect it, but there are easier ways to word it than to adopt terminology that now alienates other people.

@SterlingArcher I think the identify wording is chosen to convey what they want to hear while also avoiding to offend people
for most people they identify as what they are so it pans out

And I understand that, but I didn't see an option for people that don't believe in that sort of personality traits
Somebody can identify as a woman, etc, but me personally I don't identify, and I'm a wee bit upset I was only presented with identity options.

That option is probably "I identify as <whatever you actually are>" if I read it right
also, identity gets icky around the edges. It's good to give leeway

I would have been perfectly fine with "what are you?"

@SterlingArcher I mean, you do. If someone asked you, are you white, you'd say yes.

7:01 PM
Correct, but being white isn't an identity to me.

don't read too much into the "identify" part of the wording

I promise I'm not as upset as maybe I'm coming off, but a part of me doesn't like being forced to adopt terminology I don't see myself a part of
But it's all good, I get it, I get why, just wanted to voice my opinion

fair enough

@SterlingArcher others have also voiced the opinion that "identify" shouldn't be there, not sure what SO is going to do

7:17 PM
@Magisch I answered "I dunno", because I really dunno if I have it or not... (I haven't been professionally checked)
But well, is this the first time the Survey is directly linked to an SE account, or was it since 2018? (Note: I didn't take last year's survey)
Because AFAIR, I have to input my SO user profile link before...

you did have to input it, yes
no, it wasn't like that in 2018

so... all of these "identity" questions are automatically linked to the profile?... well, I... hope they can get satisfying data, if they decide to link them to... I dunno, flagged comments?

I just took it so I could see what all the hubbub was about ;) @SterlingArcher Like Mith said, there's been more voices about the identify part. I believe the survey had a 'remarks about the survey' box at the end, I hope you put it in?

@andmyself IIRC none of them are. Maybe on the backend, but of what gets released, none of it is

the survey literally says in about a dozen places your answers are anonymous

7:25 PM
@Tinkeringbell I did yes 😀 I just hope that I was able to express my opinions in a way that didn't come across as an anti-lgbt etc person.

From what I read and saw using my poor browser analyzing skills, they do not actually link your profile to your survey responses

@andmyself I don't think they're linked to your profile, the "link" is just for the badge

@andmyself Pretty sure they accept self-diagnoses too.

> Demographics - We are almost done! All questions in this section are optional. As a reminder, all reporting of the survey responses will be anonymized.
I can participate in the survey multiple times!? :D

Anonymous doesn't mean non-unique

7:39 PM
course not
but uniques get harder to find as the size of your dataset increases

I mean if you're determined to make a new IP/account to make a minor dent in a dataset go nuts
I'm sure it's not that simple though

and at some point... you just have to trust that the company you're giving your data to isn't too nefarious

That's why I don't use facebook lol
One time I thought about buying something and they started advertising it to me

TBF, I don't care about giving my data to SO...

To Be Fat?

7:48 PM
@ArtOfCode which is why SE is getting my survey and everyone else isn't

@andmyself it doesn't let you do that, obviously

pop into an incognito/private/in-private/whatever your browser calls the window with cookies that are deleted when it's closed

yeah, but I guess still no second badge

Well, no

otherwise everyone could set up a network of "badge donors" where you complete the survey but give your claim-badge link to somebody else instead :P (not sure if that's possible, btw)

8:15 PM
It's not
But I don't see what possibly good a massive amount of badges for surveys could do. If you're gonna have a badge to show off, it should at least be gold

I think gold is reserved for extremely difficult stuff
some are even ridiculously difficult

@EKons indeed, some gold badges are really 'platinum' in effort required

you mean "diamond"

nah, platinum

heh

8:21 PM
I don't agree with the Blizzard gaming tier choices

lol I dunno what that even is I meant carved diamond is usually more expensive than platinum

ah
well, nah I am thinking of Illuminator which is definitely harder than other 'gold' badge efforts but not that much more difficult

especially once you realize you don't have to edit and answer 500 questions at once and you only have 12 hours to do it :P

They gave everyone who had earned any Documentation badge a silver badge whihc seemed odd
At that rate they should've given those who earned all possible Documentation badges while it was live a gold badge, IMO
that never happened though :-(
It's also annoying that they removed that whole section of badges from the badges page and meanwhile the old analytical badge which is in the same camp (can't earn it anymore) is still sitting there with only "retired" next to it in parentheses

turns out it is hard to add new features to a complex system and it is even harder to remove a feature from it.
In the end no-one is really satisfied

8:38 PM
Speaking of Blizzard, I'm watching AlphaStar stream...
when I should have been sleeping... (3am)

@andmyself good night, sleep well ;)

user302202
@andmyself Well, if your data contributes positively to diversity percentages, there is no problem. Otherwise... more ammo for Twitter, for SO.blog, for Welcoming initiative (tiny black feet next time?). A reason enough for me not to participate in the survey.

user302202
I accept that my existence on SO is a problem; don't wish to exacerbate it further with the survey.
