I am of the opinion that this is the case. Mobility does affect keeping track of things, and therefore could accidentally trigger a CAPTCHA, since I've seen that while posting content and being on the bus with a tethered connection.

@Asuna Why do you sit your waffles on your seat

If there's anyone in particular that you think I could ping, let me know.

@Werner Hmmm. That's an interesting one. Sadly, I don't know the true answer... All I know about when Captcha's turn up is in that rate-limiting guide. Anyone else in here have an idea?

Rob
@Werner - When on a shared network you are at the mercy of others on the same IP address. If they are a bunch of spammers you all will be IP banned, but you will regain access once you get a new network. There's an answer on Meta.

@Tinkeringbell Yup; thanks.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Blacklisted website in answer, potentially bad keyword in answer (93): Shut up a kernel error or avoid it by configuring Prometheus Node Exporter by charlini on unix.SE

@ArtOfCode @Tinkeringbell juice is usually fine for even a couple weeks after the expiration date (not a constant rule though, and it depends on what type of juice (/food or drink in general)). The expiration dates aren't really expiration dates in most cases. If it's stored properly (/normal), it can last longer

@FreezePhoenix it's not a file, it's a TLD

@Asuna well it's a month out, and it's just been sitting on a shelf at room temperature...

8:04 PM
@Rob So do I share the same IP with other people who also tether on the bus with me? Or would I share the same IP with everyone on that network? I'm completely unfamiliar with that technological part.

@Werner define "tether"? On-board wifi, or using a mobile hotspot on your phone?

Rob
It depends on how it's setup.

@ArtOfCode Using a mobile hotspot on my phone.

then no, that IP is only used by people using your mobile hotspot
which hopefully is only you

@ArtOfCode Indeed. It will only be me.
So, unique IP, I guess. Wondering why I still get the occasional CAPTCHA trigger. It may be that I'm travelling through zones where I don't have any 4G, but I don't know whether that affects/influences SE's detection.

8:08 PM
New night, new rant. Although I would've preferred if it were a little more verbose.

@ArtOfCode Damn o-o
@FreezePhoenix Wdym?

The waffle is on your seat

Stack Exchange is soooo unwelcoming. You can't get the Census badge here on meta :(

it's not?

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... last year you couldn't even choose the site... :P

8:09 PM
@MEEisJohannGambolputty... And the beta badge

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... well, it is called the Stack Overflow developer survey, not the Stack Exchange Meta Survey

Wait, do we even have that anymore?

Rob
@Werner - BC Transit use Shaw WiFi: m.translink.ca/Rider-Info/Mobile-Services.aspx

I know, maybe it helps because I tried changing the link...

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Hold the rant for a while. It won't hurt your kidneys and gives others the time to help Werner out ;)

8:10 PM
@Asuna Is that a table?

@Tinkeringbell No not me, questions on main
I can start a rant at will, with certain trigger words

There is a table in the pic, yes

It works like that Winter Soldier hum that resets his mind

@Rob That's in Vancouver. I live on Vancouver Island...

Rob
K

8:14 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Ohh. Please don't :P But my apologies for the confusion :) I should probably go to bed :/

No triggers please

Fun:
@tinkertim @Tinkeringbell91 You heard it here first, NEW, in 2019, @StackExchange to release a line of car air fresheners... @StackOutdoors will smell like pine trees and Coffee smells like ... Coffee and @StackCooking smells like pie or waffles. Not sure Physical Fitness will be a popular one, though.

ew disgusting...

Arts and Crafts might be popular...

Catija

8:17 PM
@JohnDvorak Glue? :P

That, or toluene

I'd keep that one for home improvement :P

What would the trilogy sites smell like?

the best would be Gardening & Landscaping... :P

8:17 PM
@JohnDvorak Help me out... that's SO, SU and...

@EKons fresh mulch :P

@Tinkeringbell Not to forget StackOverflow, with that good ol' desperate developer smell.
:p

more like plastic smell

ServerFault

8:18 PM
What do desperate developers smell like, cigarette smoke, pizza and coffee?

well... SO is basically a blend of hot plastic and sweat

SO is kinda a mess lol

@Tinkeringbell If you have to ask, you won't believe me :p
@FreezePhoenix no me

I did have to look up what server fault is...

@JohnDvorak might smell more like air conditioner over there... ;)

8:20 PM
I'm going to go with 'generic open office plan' smell for SO :P

@Shog9: Do you know anything about CAPTCHA triggers?

@Tinkeringbell OpenOfficePlan<T>?

@Asuna See, that looks like quite a fancy brand name :P

@Werner Be a robot.

@Tinkeringbell uh... yeah... every single developer would hate you... :P
real job isn't "ah, nice, open office with a nice view"

8:22 PM
@EKons I thought we had already let this conversation drop to 'find a smell everyone will hate' :P

@Tinkeringbell Brought to you by 6-8™ Industries®

🚽

@JohnDvorak What's that?
Why is it round?

Open office

8:23 PM
Apache OpenOffice logo...

LibreOffice is better

well for sure

LibreOffice is slow

So is OOo

at least faster than M$O if I may say so...

8:25 PM
The fastest one is VIM. More than compensated by user speed though.

LeafPad

Is that a Pokemon version?

No lol
It's the text editor that comes with an RPI

Wait, that was LeafRed
(sold in autumn)

8:27 PM
Leafpad is an open source text editor for Linux, BSD, and Maemo. Created with the focus of being a lightweight text editor with minimal dependencies, it is designed to be simple and easy-to-compile. Leafpad is the default text editor for LXDE Desktop environment, including Lubuntu, and also Xubuntu.Released under the terms of the GNU General Public License, Leafpad is free software. == Features == Leafpad's features include a codeset option, auto codeset detection, an unlimited Undo/Redo feature, and drag and drop capabilities.Leafpad has a small footprint compared to editors such as gedit or...

Ah, Linux-only. No go.

not to mention there's something called gedit already in your Ubuntu...

I kinda love sublime :p ....

For now, I'm an Atom user

8:29 PM
vscode is the only correct choice

LeafPad and or chrome console lol

try running VS Code on ARMv7 xd

@JohnDvorak you mean Atom the Overloaded? ;P

I've tried Sublime. Ran away when I learned they'd refused to support ligature fonts. Plus it's nagware.

The c++ plugin is borked
Sublime is ew

8:30 PM

Atom doesn't run on ARMv7
Also, Brackets is better :*

^^^ yeah that's exactly what I'm referring to...
honestly that's way more loaded than what I would call a simple and sleek text editor

Huh... with discord.js you can tell the diff between an offline user and an invisible user

wait what
ouch that's contrary to the whole point of invisibility...

omfg xD
I'll post a pic with today's paper later. More on the ransom later ;) — JNat ♦ 7 hours ago
@FreezePhoenix no it can't

8:34 PM
Does a user account that's automated show up as invis to itself?

Rob
Air fresheners: Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (smells like your car), Code Review (smells like a basement nerd), The Workplace (varied), Raspberry Pi (mmmm), Personal Finance & Money (everyone loves the smell of money), Biology (also great), Pets (hmmmm), Skeptics (it's uncertain if that will be popular), Space Exploration (odorless), Woodworking (Poplar), Homebrewing (perfect for your vehicle during roadchecks), Poker (cigars and whiskey) and Hardware Recommendations (sometimes it stinks).
4

@FreezePhoenix Correct

Skeptics should be Yeti

Skeptics should be hmmmm

8:43 PM
Air freshners: Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (smells like mechanical oil), Code Review (smells like sweat and blood), The Workplace (better get lucky with the smell :P), Raspberry Pi (smells like actual raspberries), Personal Finance & Money (smells like cold, hard cash), Biology (smells like exerted substances), Pets (smells like exerted substances and hair), Skeptics (mind reader, smells like what you're craving), Space Exploration (nothing, it's space!), Woodworking (smells like, well, wood), Homebrewing (smells like unfermented beer), Poker (smells like smoke 'n' alcohol) and Hardw

What's worse, the humanity keeps making stuff that, if it ever fell on Earth, would wipe all of known life in the Universe.

huh?

Like cities and such

pretty sure the only single objects capable of destroying all life on the planet are asteroids

8:50 PM
Eh... destabilize the core with a nuke. Lotsa nukes.

Anything big enough will do. Laws of physics already guarantee it will be traveling at at least 11 km/s. That's pretty fast.

@FreezePhoenix real life ain't sci-fi movies

Still possible

@JohnDvorak I mean... sure, but cities don't tend to drop from space that often

8:53 PM
The core is just a ginormous sphere of iron. You can't destabilize an iron sphere.
@ArtOfCode Our only luck

"destabilize"

alien city drop, hm...

@Werner a bit, why?

@JohnDvorak luckily we typically bolt those down

It takes just one

9:02 PM

@Shog9 ewww

well, tbf, the workplace never smells well, if it does have a strong smell (such as a chocolate factory, or simply an air freshener), you're going to get sick of it, otherwise, anything could just start to smell randomly

Rob
@JourneymanGeek Someone bought the scent and made scratch and sniff prints of the Moon.
The smell of the workplace: "Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant" in Los Angeles.

9:30 PM
@Rob my brother works somewhere like that

9:54 PM
@Shog9 This is the start of the conversation:
2 hours ago, by Werner
@Tinkeringbell I looked at that, but it didn't answer the question I had in mind. The question is: Could using an SE site while being mobile (say you're on the bus on your laptop, using a tethered connection to your cellphone) and you're switching between connections - I don't know how that works - cause one to fall prey to a CAPTCHA trigger?
It relates to a CAPTCHA trigger that (I think) stems from using the site in a mobile fashion.
That is, when I'm on the bus, tethered to my cellphone and posting content, I get the occasional CAPTCHA, and I'm wondering whether it is related to network connectivity.
If there was, for example, an unsuccessful saving of a time stamp when you started a post (not sure how that time stamp is created), and when you post it, the "less than 5 minute" condition is automatically triggered and the CAPTCHA is shown.

10:17 PM
Plausible. Also can trigger simply because there isn't consistent connectivity while you're editing
IOW, if it looks like someone may have recorded a session and be trying to replay it...

@Shog9 I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "replay[ing] a session".

3 'sorry' in 3 comments? And I though I was the Canadian.... — Patrice 8 hours ago

10:53 PM
@Werner like, captured the parameters used to post a message, and then sent that same request again
as one might if one were just trying to get as much canned ham onto a site as possible

11:22 PM
@Shog9 Canned ham. I get it. Thanks.

@ShadowWizard My dining hall has brownies. : )
