1:09 AM
Alternate view: stacked by total # of answers

1:22 AM
@Shog9 If I'm reading this correctly, it appears that we have a pretty uniform trend of decline in the number of answers once the peak number of users has been reached (which would be the last day of any given year).

well, it does tend to decline, yes
What's more interesting to me is how much of a year's answers end up being contributed by newly-joined users, and how long they stick around answering
As the total number of answers posted has fallen over time, so has the portion of the total being posted by new users

Rob
The first graph seems to say that a user's peak of answering occurs one year after joining and declines thereafter. The second graph seems to indicate that most users, during and whom joined 2 years prior, answered more questions during 2014; obviously that excludes users whom joined after, and users whom joined over two years prior did not participate more (in answering) increasing (lack of answering) with the age of the account. --- Conclusion: Reinvigorate the pensioners and we need another
2014 year (prizes or advertising?).
We have a lot of highly experienced people on Stats.SE whom might want a shot at offering their interpretation too.

@Alex and december tends to be quiet in general

"Dear statisticians: how can I make this chart look more like a caterpillar?"

Most people seem to be on SE at work. Same reason weekends are quet
@Shog9 OOH! MAKE A DEFORMED RABBIT!

@JourneymanGeek I would think it should be the opposite.

@Alex What kinda crazy person would be sitting around on a Q&A site on vaca... oh wait. I'm on vacation...

@JourneymanGeek I don't know, but I can't understand why a boss would be happy with employees on Stack Exchange (unless it's one that relates to the work at hand).

1:43 AM
@Alex a lot of it is probably work related
or downtime

Probably, for the "technical" sites. Many of the sites are surely not work related.

plausibly
but that december is quiet and weekends are quiet is pretty well known

(which is why making important announcements on friday.,... ;p)

I can't think of many jobs where those would be relevant.

1:46 AM
@Alex Well, at my last job, I'd pop into SE over lunch...

Nothing wrong with that.

which is one way people would use a non tech site over a workday

Especially if you're going to Seasoned Advice to find out how to heat up your lunch.

lol
I'd actually turn off my phone and hide for an hour cause that job was emotionally and physically exhausting.

And Stack Exchange isn't?

1:49 AM
Well, if its physically exhausting, .... I'd love to know how, I'd not mind losing a few pounds...

@Shog9 is there a way to force the order of the stacking?
2013 on seem to get placed oddly

As for emotional exhaustion - its just what you take with you.
If you're constantly trying to find reasons to get mad cause you disagree with broad aspects of network culture, it gets tiring.
If you treat it like an engineering problem, it gets easier ;)

@JourneymanGeek My hand got a good workout today highlighting large sections of text for Stack Exchange use.

@Catija sure
you want 2011 on top?
(they're ordered by the total # of answers posted by users who joined during that year)

1:59 AM
As long as the years are stacked in order, whether the oldest is on top or bottom doesn't necessarily matter. :)

@Shog9 Any new developments with Imgur? It appears that a bug on Imgur's end is allowing users to upload animated avatars. Also, don't forget the long-standing bug with the resizer.

I know
They're... not doing much

@Shog9 :/
I'm tempted to half jokingly suggest going just rolling out your own image host but.... I half suspect that would end up being a pain and half.

@Shog9 So has SE contacted Imgur about either bug? There's no staff comment on either bug report so it seems like it's been ignored.

(or a week of massive amounts of coffee, and ballmer peaks)

2:04 AM
I mean... we'll probably end up going that way eventually

@JourneymanGeek My school used to block Imgur, so it's useful for such users

but imgur's been pretty good, for the most part. Would be nice to stick with 'em

@Shog9 Does the contract between SE and Imgur allow backing out at any time?

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog eh, its easy to suggest stuff - but there's probably a laundry list of things, not all of which are technical.
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog I'd suspect there would be a cutover anyway, and SE does have backups of imgur image uploads from what I remember.
(for an image host - for example, you would need a way to do takedowns, and handle... nasty things.)

Rob
@Shog9 I posted a link over in Ten Fold (Stats Chat). There has been no activity there for a day, perhaps they worry about how the statistics would be interpreted if they played on the Internet and Stack Exchange during the work week. 😃

2:12 AM
I mean, a image host basically is aboooout... an uploader, automated resizes, and lots of static storage. and a crapload of legal paperwork, abuse management...

Gotta be honest, I don't care that much about animated gifs on profile pages to begin with, but it looks like there's an easy fix here: imgur works as it used to if you pass a power of 2 as the size

(also, outside inconsistancy - what's wrong with animated gifs in profile pages?)

so... if we care... we can just do that
I feel like having your image sizes be a power of 2 is kinda nice anyway. We should design everything around powers of 2.
(also, I could swear someone else was looking into this already, but I can't find mention of it now. So maybe I'm crazy & we haven't even talked to imgur)
In any case. I think I'm gonna eat some sardines & toast

@Martin got a ping by a moderator, but thanks for notifying me as well.

@YvetteColomb nice! :)
@YvetteColomb sorry, couldn't find any. What @Alex gave is lacking tons of common names (e.g. my wife and daughters names, all three are not in there at all) and on the other hand it contains tons of names that are never used IRL.
At least in Israel.

@ShadowWizard Eh, maybe your wife's and daughters' names aren't common.

@Glorfindel Yes, only later I've noticed that the mod mentioned this in the answer: "I have left a comment on one of the posts.."

@Alex oh, they are. :)

@Tinkeringbell I guess Interpersonal Skills is something that could tangentially be useful for work. But I don't think any employer would be happy with an employee answering questions on Movies, for example, unless maybe they're the producers or something.

7:55 AM
@Alex I dunno. My current place is pretty relaxed. As long as you get your work done, they don't care all that much what you do during breaks or compiling

@Tinkeringbell Maybe they need to give you more work then...
You might have untapped potential.

Sssh. Don't tell them! :P

It would be quite funny if they were reading this.

The great thing about untapped potential is that as long as it remains untapped, you won't get tired, have unfinished business at the end of the day or your sleep disturbed by dreams of work ;)
@Alex They don't.

@Tinkeringbell But if I recall correctly you have your sleep disturbed by actual work.

7:59 AM
@Alex Says who? I woke up before my alarm called me this morning ;)
Only some days, when I have to get up really early. But for the rest, things are fine.

@Alex That's Journey

@Tinkeringbell I was referring to instances of your coworkers contacting you at night.

@Alex Evenings ;) And I fixed that.
Now... brb.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I think it's perpetually morning where he is.

8:00 AM
@Tinkeringbell how?

@Alex nope. It's 4PM for him.
It's morning here (10 AM) and in Europe now. ;)

@ShadowWizard That could loosely be considered morning.

Yep, for Journey, it probably is

@Alex not from my understanding of the term. Morning is until 12 PM, then it's noon, then at 4 PM or so it becomes afternoon.
Of course some people can start their day at 4 PM though. :D

8:03 AM
My understanding is that it's morning until you get frustrated at work. Then it's afternoon and the day has been going on for too long.

@Tinkeringbell That sounds serious.

Oh... poor parrot.... handing over a blanket to @Tink

@ShadowWizard Another one?
@Alex The first two aren't and according to the doctor the third isn't either.
I can handle a cold, my bedroom is just badly isolated but manageable with a few blankets

I'm curious since it came up, in the industries y'all work in, is it normal for employers to ask for previous pay stubs?

@Magisch ? you mean an employee asking to see your pay checks from an older workplace you have been working at?
I am not even sure that would be legal in some places.

10:16 AM
Either that or to prove your salary at the previous place somehow
Here some medium-big companies do this because your starting pay will be capped at something like previous pay * 1.05

@Magisch not for me so far

@Derpy or scooby doo. Ok give me some candy coloured pony names

@Derpy Suette, pronounced soo-EY-tey. Chamoru word literally meaning "lucky."

@Magisch haven't experienced it, though HR did ask me why when I asked for current pay check (for applying credit card) because they thought I was applying... for another job

[snerk]

@Magisch nope. None of their business whatsoever.

so it's not that normal then

Rob
No it's not normal. Some places have really weird ideas about what people will accept, especially if they think you'll have problems finding somewhere else to work. The hidden message is either they are concerned that you are paid too much or too little, the outcome isn't likely to be positive. I've volunteered the information when asked how much I wanted to be paid and they said they couldn't match it. I explained that they could easily match it because the last employer was garbage for
having paid so little, and that he was a much better person.
Either they'd be far more generous or I'd work hard for years to ensure that they got no work. They closed the next year. No point arguing with people whom are broke, deadbeats. What an offensive expectation, show your prior pay stubs - get lost. Of course you would want to have another job lined up.

11:22 AM
@Rob exactly.
@BESW hey! Welcome to the Tavern! :)

pfft. What are we, chopped flarn?

Rob
@Sha - If people cave in to stuff like that employers (or Managers at least) think that they can get away with it. If everyone rejects it then there comes a time, with many burnt bridges, that they must accept not to be abusive or they'll get a bad name; either no one will work there or it will be a percolator that distills the bottom of the barrel - if those employees deal directly with customers the service is bound to stink, creating a fight on another front (for the owner to defend).

@Rob yeah, that makes some sense.
New dilemma for me at work. Since programming tasks have been reduced to almost nothing (hence my ongoing activity here), I was kind of re-assigned to do non-programming tasks, e.g. analyze errors and flaws in the system which don't involve code. I don't like it... but I can do it. Should I tell the boss? Try to find something else to do? Last resort is new job of course, but prefer to avoid that for now.... way too lazy for that. lol

@ShadowWizard You can probably at least let your boss know that you prefer one sort of work over the other.
Throw it on more fun, more challenging, whatever (not on 'easier to do' :P)
Perhaps phrase it as a question, ask how long they're expecting you to do this and if/when it would be possible to go back to programming

@ShadowWizard you had been given the opportunity to become a pony. You didn't.
Now, enjoy your slow journey to become a crocodile.

@ShadowWizard If you can't do that within your current company (and you did get in there doing that)... it's not to weird to ask if/when there will be programming to do again. If there won't be, it's time to go check whether you want to go through the hassle of finding another job, or stick with this because 'it isn't so bad'

More like getting client's report about some problem, making initial analysis, find the one who can solve this (usually not me), and be the middle-man in this whole thing.
