12:57 AM
I assume today is a holiday?
Or I woke up too darn fast...

1 hour later…
2:29 AM
hmm
I'm not doing work stuff over the break, but one of the last thing we took a look at was mobile views which was fun. Currently Stack Overflow's desktop view for questions can be over 3x the HTML we send in the mobile version. But, we want to kill the mobile views...
(and this is why I stalk keep an eye on a handful of employees on that dumpster fire of drama twitter) ;p

There's two tweets today saying we're killing the mobile theme.

2:56 AM
@Catija possibly but that's the one I saw. ;p

3:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek it's later in the same thread.

ah
I was assuming people would read the thread ;p

Ha.

Rob
3:32 AM
It's more about making the mobile appearance look similar to the desktop view, by substituting different code for the footer and sidebar - to avoid sending excessive data to mobile users while still providing a desktop-like experience. There's a few complaints about how things look on mobile (in desktop mode, which I always use), hopefully they'll have more time available to fix things now that they won't be maintaining two
sets of code.

3:49 AM
Ah, I was worried they were trying to shove people back to the app in order to finally justify its cost

4:04 AM
Is intentionally creating a bad answer to get DVs for hats against the rules?
I'd think so, right?
@Rob And yet the "responsiveness" breaks it for me on desktop!
Gotta love having an answer squished into 5 words per line!

Rob
4:22 AM
False alert @Rob, it's for me.
@forest I see more than 5 words per line, both here and on the Q&A's in desktop mode view:

@Rob You're probably maximizing your browser.
Also I'm talking about questions/answers, not chat.

Rob
Link to a question that you want a screenshot of ...

@Rob How about the front page of The Workplace.
The first question title is broken into three lines.
The tags (only 10) are broken into 4 lines!

Rob

In fact, on that front page, only one question's title is shown in one line:
> Excluded from meetings
@Rob OK, so you have the bar disabled and you are maximizing your browser.
I cannot maximize my browser.

Rob
4:29 AM
That's landscape, in portrait mode there's more to see. You can't go to profile settings and check the box?

Sure I can, but that only helps a little bit.
Right now the only solution I have is to click disable responsiveness.
Which is not a setting and must be done for each and every site.

Rob
Did you leave desktop mode, go to the bottom of the page, and click "Full Site"?

I mean seriously, why does a question title longer than 3 words get split up?
@Rob There's no button for "full site".
This is desktop mode.

Rob
Just a sec

@Rob I'm not in mobile mode.
I am on a desktop, so there is no "full site" button.

Rob
4:36 AM
After leaving desktop mode (in browser menu) go to mobile mode on website then click "Full Site", now back to browser menu and use browser's menu's desktop mode - then user profile settings disable sidebar - IF you can't get the same view I screenshotted (Chrome or Firefox) then file on Meta.SE.

@Rob I was told when I asked about it that the site is only supported in full screen mode. Basically anyone who doesn't maximize their browser should "f- off".
So asking again on Meta isn't going to help.
(Also, others have brought up the same issue and were told the same thing)

Rob
I can only say what I did and provide a screenshot, it's unfortunate that you don't get a better view. Five words per line would tick me off.
afk

TinkeringbellThis is what happens when an account is suspended. If you look at their profile, it shows: After the suspension ends, their reputation should recalculate and no longer show as 1.

Answering a dupe . . . tsk tsk tsk
Complete disregard for site policies
I DEMAND A RE-ELE . . . Wait a minute

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Evidence that she knew that?

Mods know everything unless proven otherwise
They know, for instance, your real name is Bob, not Alex.

I'd perhaps change one word there.

You're taking me too seriously

No, I'm just playing along.

7:14 AM
Well, every dang person with more than 300 rep on meta knows such a post would be a dupe

What about the non-dang users, like myself?

If a user is not dang they won't affect much anyway
Statistical insignificance

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Every person on Meta with 300 rep would not know that if they are only here for Knitting and hat showoff posts. Plus association bonus.

No they would know
Whether they would care is a different thing
I am definitely right. You can't disprove someone who is definitely right
I wish there was a Chem version for the new Wizard. I was gonna test the hell out of it

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ You prolong conversations just to prove yourself right. ;)

7:27 AM
Um, who doesn't

Others just leave conversations. :P

The fact that ultimately I AM proved right with a "yeah yeah OK" is what matters
Hey I leave conversations!
Leaves

I really think today is a holiday... sites feel quieter than weekends...

That sounds like a pretty emphasized, heavy thinking. I would have invested it on understanding relativity
Well, you posted this in the completely wrong place....so maybe your worries are unfounded? — n8te 36 mins ago
Haha BEST. SNARK. EVER.
Imma screenshot that

The Genius species absorbs knowledge out of thin air, as opposed to traditional methods such as deciphering messages carved onto cellulose. Scientists are intrigued by this discovery and hope to find out more.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ is this even possible?! :D
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ actually it can be good, to prevent auto redirection.

Not the normal, fuzzy definition of 'free'
@SmokeDetector F I guess

11:53 AM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ huh?
@Glorfindel something tells me that user won't stop there, looks like he became a Hate Troll. There's no turning back, since every action we make only makes it worse, from his view. Luckily we have enough gun mod power to handle those things. ;)

@ShadowWizard There's a shutdown over at the USA. Something with financial budgets not being approved by the senate?

@Tinkeringbell you mean deadlock? Yeah, it's not new though.
I said it before and I'll say it one more time (for now): Trump is the biggest mistake USA has ever made in its entire history. He says the right things sometimes and most of the times has the right goals in mind (he's not evil), but the way he's doing it, the way he doesn't listen to anyone, leads to very dark future. That financial crisis is only the beginning. </rant>

12:11 PM
@ShadowWizard you do realise that you've jinxed it, and now worse things can happen...
also Evil is efficient.

Yeah, USA could be in better shape if he was evil.

Q: Edit Post Counter Stays Hard Coded on Magento.SE

Web DeveloperMost of the time I can see on Magento.SE that some users always keep editing posts whether it's going to be helpful or not. (That's not my concern). I did that same thing today (For checking editing counter) I've edited exactly 8 posts on that site, but still the counter didn't increase. Chec...

MSE is overloaded...
people used it for magento (not magnet) math....

lol
MSE overflow

We should copy-right the abbreviation for MSE :P

1:06 PM
@ShadowWizard I get the motivation, but holy hell what a terrible way to push it xd "Gimme money or I'll shut down the government" will backfire worse than not having it built at all

Gimme answer or I'll shut down SE

@andmyself ._.

Like that ^ lol

> If you are looking for answers I can tell you you won't find them here, but what we do have are a very particular set of sites. Sites we have acquired over a very long career. Sites that cover a Range of topics. If you ask a good on the right site, and that'll be the end of it. You will get an answer if its on topic and a good question, but if you don't, it will get closed. This is off topic here
this is totally a comment I have used before ;p

I haven't had a heated discussion in some time. I'm freezing.

I thought SO only has Jobs ads and community OSS ads..?

@andmyself is the replacement of the HNQ list ...

I would like to believe that, but...

2:10 PM
@andmyself umm.... yes? There was always rotation between Jobs, OSS ads, internal sites ads with a featured question, and Area 51 proposals.

Okay... looks like I already forgot how SO looks like with ads...

has almost always been a thing

Yup, predating the HNQ sidebar by far.

ah, that reminds me...

2:14 PM
With the HNQ sidebar guess it became irrelevant though, nobody is clicking it when there is whole list of such "featured questions". ;)

it has been... 5 years since I saw that the first time...

lol
It's still there, appearing about once every 50 reloads.

I think a massive chunk of SO users use adblock

<---- whitelisted

And here is Area 51 ad
Appears once every 100-200 reloads.

maybe it would be an interesting topic to add... :P

Q: Main space header has issues

James JenkinsThe main space header has issues. It has been this way since at least last night, is evident when using Chrome, and is persistent across multiple computers (so I don't think it is just me). https://area51.stackexchange.com/ It does make it difficult to get to the discussion zone https://area51...

I love this idea. To take it a step further: if the list doesn't need to be an arbitrary 100 questions long, it could be changed to be 3N questions long, where N is the number of sites in the network. Then HNQ could always be the "hottest" (by whatever measure) 3 questions from each site. The sidebar could then show a selection chosen uniformly randomly from that list. — trichoplax Oct 18 at 22:19
OK that's so unrealistic TBH

I like it, actually

8:01 PM
+1

8:55 PM
You are unrealistic then
I mean, there are no more smurfs around
They all went extinct.
Seriously, think about it, and take a look at some of those 170 sites

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Windows Phone ...

Hmm, you still hung up on IE betraying you?
My POINT is . . . whoever suggests something like that doesn't come from the more exotic sites and hasn't even taken a look at the list to remember them being there
Sure, I could use more biology homework in HNQ.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Ha!
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ true that. I'm always surprised when I go looking for sites when I try to answer an site-recommendation
There are some sites with .. not so main stream topics
let alone quality on some of the higher traffic sites
Maybe we need to redefine quality

Define defining
Hey so while I was AFK what came of Health.SE?
Could have become a really great site with some dedicated pioneers

9:15 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ it became much better
It is now about science, not longer about being healthy

Now that you're being dutchy about it, it became obligatory for me to check it out
Medical sciences, huh
Well on the plus side that prevents most of the crapflood
On the down side, accumulating traffic will be a burden

I think this was the only sensible comment I made about that site: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/257614/…

Which is why we need that tireless clique of pioneers to take care of the toddler-ish
@rene Oh dang that's from when not every announcement got 37 snarky comments aimed at SE devs

Another self-deleted blatantly OT post. People are on fire today!
Hopefully it's not California fires

Rob
I think M.A.R. ҉ _ ҉ has a point.

Yes, California fires suck.
Ed. Sucked. Or are they still ongoing?
@Rob I will take that emoticon as a compliment

Rob
9:41 PM
The fires aren't cool, but the HNQ makes sense if it's a bit more than 50% of each particular user's Favorite sites (if they have enough to qualify) and the remainder drawn from the general list - that way the HNQ is more interesting to each particular user's interest. I don't need to know that prosthetic legs and "What does ham mean?" is trending.
afk

9:57 PM
@Rob Also I don't know how I know this but any question algorithm that works for SE's mainstream sites won't work for quieter sites
You'd end up with odd suggestions from those. Like week-old stuff
There is some homogeneity to some aspects of HNQuestions (e.g. the certain 'freshness' of the questions), and it works as a form of entertainment because of those. I'm not sure taking it away would not cause harm to the entertainment aspect
BTW, what does ham mean?
