Asking what to do with your frozen meat during a power outage is not a 911 call. Smelling weed coming from your neighbour's home isn't either. Cannabis is no longer illegal on October 17, 2018. Consumption is allowed for anyone 19yrs or older. Do not call police for this ^sm

@rene Just wait until they legalize XTC and MDMA

Oh, you are in ADE mood?

I hit my head with HNQ...

@rene Not my kind of music ;) the youngest brother is going to Hardwell tonight though. I just remembered a news article from last week where people were setting out arguments for actually legalizing that stuff :)

@Tinkeringbell hmm, well .. let's first catch up with the rest of the world again before we start talking about the next step.

6:16 AM
the earth is not fiat?

It is Fiat

@rene Sounds like a plan to me ;)
@Somewhat technically, marijuana isn't legal here, it's just .. tolerated :P
And with growing it still being illegal...
There's a kind of problem
You have all these big marijuana growing companies popping up in other countries legalizing marijuana and a knowledge drain over here.

Maybe I should have followed my heart and choose Flutter instead.
I mean, the name was clearly a sign that that was the framework to use.

@Derpy "flut"? :P I wouldn't use anything that's flut..

@Tinkeringbell Flutter. Not flut.

@Derpy Even worse than flut :P

It is all flut

1:26 PM
flut flutter flutst

what does flut even mean

leaves room

@Magisch If something is flut... it's worthless :P
Translate gives 'trashy'

Translate gives 'flood', 'flooder', 'floodest'

@Somewhat Nah, that's not it. It's trashy, trashier, trashiest

1:31 PM
In my case, nothing, since I said Flutter, not flut - notice the (ter) and the capital F.
If you want the German meaning.... it is flood, high tide, tsunami etc.
.... and Tinkeringbell... don't know which made up slang meaning he and rene had in mind.

huh, weird... maybe Translate is flutted by flut...

but I am pretty sure "flut" is not a real word in English.

@Derpy 'Flut' isn't really slang. It's really used, by people that generally try very hard to exactly avoid slang.
@Derpy That's most likely to be true ;)

Perhaps because here is Kroeg on the Meta...

@Somewhat Meta in de Kroeg sounds like a better idea to me :P

1:34 PM
@Tinkeringbell so, you are telling me that they avoid slang... only to use "made up words" instead? oooook, I suppose

@Derpy flut isn't a made up word. It's in the dictionary

@ArtOfCode really? Have you read my answer to the meta post?

yup

re-reading it now I'm almost certain I did go for the unhinged rant

@Magisch Well.. there's a mod that gave you an edit, and there's not a single moderator in your comments telling you 'that's not an answer to the question'. So.... subtle signs? :P
Also, the post made 'HNQ' and the votes don't count. XD

tbh I freely admit a lot of that post was carried by some seriously negative emotions

The post you wrote on MSE is more than SE could've hoped for...

@Magisch tbh, if we are not telling SE when they arn't, well, living up to our expectations, we can't really expect stuff to get better.

6:52 PM
The chat user profile page chat.stackexchange.com/users/173044/belle-sophie links to a nonexistent SO account as its main account. Why? Is this from a user merge?
I mean, I thought user merges leave behind a redirect from the old user page.

@b_jonas merges often cause that, yes. Sometimes a mod can fix that. Sometimes a dev uses a hammer to get it mended ...

I don't appear to be able to fix this one... the chat profile needs merged too

Ping Adam ...

I think Adam has probably had enough today... it's not urgent, I'm gonna leave it

7:07 PM
sure.

7:18 PM
@rene I see. But I don't understnad, because I think I have a redirect from the user page of my old merged user.

@b_jonas nobody understands how merging (chat) accounts works. When the magic fails .... chaos ....

7:40 PM
@Sonic if you actually care about getting a useful answer, don't close as dupe
Nicol will be taken way more seriously

8:30 PM
@rene Yeah.

@Magisch - One point I would make with regards to twitter is that a vast majority of traffic for the exchange comes from Google, and from users who do not have accounts here. That twitter posts content about the site just shows the exchange's reach. Having content reach a larger audience generally means more oversight.

9:22 PM
Hello everyone. I've seen user scripts in many answers here to tweak how the site works, but there seems to be several browser extensions and I'm not sure which one to get. Does anyone here use one, and if so, which one do you use?

@SilverWolf I use Tampermonkey

@Mithrandir Thanks. So what's the difference between that and Greasemonkey?

One is for Chrome, one is for Firefox.
There's also Violentmonkey for Opera.

Ah, I just assumed they were on both. I use Firefox. (:
And for user CSS managers, I already have Stylus. That's the one to go for, right?

*shrugs* I dunno, that's not my thing, sorry :P

9:26 PM
Huh, both Greasemonkey and Tampermonkey are available for Firefox.

@SilverWolf I write my own stuff and then use it as a dev extension

Looks like Tampermonkey isn't open-source, but Greasemonkey is.
@TravisJ So you just wrote your own userscript manager? Neat! How hard was it?

Manager? Heh, no I wrote the whole extension. A set of them really.

I wonder how much worse the relationship between the community and company can get.

@SilverWolf Here is an example of a simple one: github.com/travisjj/StackTop/tree/master , you can remix it to your own needs in a folder and then use that as a dev extension if you want

9:36 PM
By userscript manager, I meant an extension that manages userscripts...can it mean something else? (:
And thanks!
Ah, never mind, I just looked and it seems to be a separate extension for each task. Interesting.

Exactly, they are separate. Although you can merge them very easily.
The nice thing about being separate is that you can manage them in chrome very easily.

Does Chrome have substantially different tools for managing extensions than Firefox does? With the way Firefox does it, it seems like it would be easier to have something like Stylus, where it has a popup that lets you configure the styles for the current site, rather than going into the addons manager every time you want to change something.

So, yes, chrome does have substantially different tooling.
Also, sorry to plug this to you, but chrome is much more secure. Firefox still has the same vulnerabilities that IE has since they were both built on very similar technologies.

Huh...doesn't look all that different, actually, just grid-based instead of row-based.

9:45 PM

similar

IE and Firefox being similar technologies?

What.

And Chrome may be more secure...but I don't touch anything by Google with a 30-foot pole. (:

What.

9:49 PM
Fair enough, but Firefox exposes the Windows kernel, so at least be aware.

Huh? Windows kernel? How so?
And I'm usually on Mac anyway (although I do use Firefox when I use Windows). (:

What.

@JohnDvorak Huh?

What do you mean, exposes Windows kernel?

In the literal exact sense you would read that sentence.
That is what I mean.

9:51 PM
In what way, though? Do you mean it's not sandboxed, but Chrome is?

Yes.
Firefox can execute code in the windows kernel.
Well, a site can, though firefox.

Then you'll need to provide some resources because what you're saying is a gaping hole in security

> The day started with the return of Richard Zhu (fluorescence), this time targeting Mozilla Firefox with a Windows kernel EoP. He eschewed all drama today and successfully popped Mozilla Firefox on his first attempt. He used an out-of-bounds (OOB) write in the browser followed by an integer overflow in the Windows kernel to earn himself another $50,000 and 5 more Master of Pwn points.
Happens every year.
It is a pretty easy exploit.

And Chrome doesn't have any of those?

In computer security, heap spraying is a technique used in exploits to facilitate arbitrary code execution. The part of the source code of an exploit that implements this technique is called a heap spray. In general, code that sprays the heap attempts to put a certain sequence of bytes at a predetermined location in the memory of a target process by having it allocate (large) blocks on the process's heap and fill the bytes in these blocks with the right values. == Operation == A heap spray does not actually exploit any security issues but it can be used to make a vulnerability easier to exploit...
Correct. It does not.

9:53 PM
How is that?

Firefox and IE were built on similar technology, from old school Mozilla Communications. They were built to support windows update, as well as a host of protocols. The result is that there is a connection that cannot really be reverse. This is why Microsoft recently reinvented their browser in the form of Edge.
Chrome is fully sandboxed. IE and FF are not.

What does "fully sandboxed" mean? Does Windows have a built-in application sandboxing mechanism like OS X? Does Chrome use it? What about the OS X sandbox?

It means that the runtime is sandboxed. In chrome, the runtime is inside of its own environment, whereas in IE and FF the runtime is the system runtime.
So, if you break out of the runtime in chrome, you are still in a localized environment. If you do that in IE or FF you are executing code in the windows kernel.
I am not as familiar with OS X.
I had some discussion with Jonathan Sampson about this back in 2014, who was the project manager for Edge. They released it 6 months later. Was kind of fun.

@TravisJ It looks like Firefox is actually using Chromium's sandboxing code on Windows. On Mac, it's using the TrustedBSD framework, which apparently comes with the OS and is used for app sandboxing.
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security/Sandbox/Specifics

@SilverWolf Yeah, but in chrome, when you break out of that sandbox, there is another one because it runs in its own environment. Whereas, as noted above, FF runs in the Windows environment.

Right so it's not very much about the specific issue at all, more about process.
