@NogShine No? The map I linked says it's not blocked in India.
3 mins ago, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard https://unblockvideos.com/youtube-video-restriction-checker/#url=BTDXAYl5M38
Give that site a video link and it'll show a map of countries it's blocked in.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog It is unavailable for me.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog that's not really "in advance"... one has to explicitly look for that info.
Again, since the error is not the error showing there, I suspect YouTube got some internal error with that video, probably related to the country block settings.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard well... I can know in advance that most of the FunAnimation youtube videos are going to be blocked in Europe.

Due to a dearth of IP addresses assigned to India, many Indian ISPs have started routing their customers through IP addresses in other countries. I've seen United Arab Emirates, Oman, and even the United States.

e.g. it's defined as "block in country 191919" in their database, and there's no entry for country 191919, causing null reference error. :D

10:03 AM
The U.S. has many more IPv4 addresses assigned to it than it does Internet users, while India has many more Internet users than it does IPv4 addresses assigned to it.
Case in point: a U.S. ISP will often give you a static IP if you ask really nicely, while that's practically impossible in many other countries.

Knowing it's an official music (video?), I already have a feeling it'd be blocked in many countries...

Nice it's still oneboxed though. ;)

@NogShine It looks like your connection is being routed through another (blocked) country. See anove.

@Somewhat yeah I think that for some reason many official music videos (Vevo?) are allowed only for USA visitors.
But still, I'm 100% sure those show a clear error message, unlike the one linked above.

@Shadow It looks like they're looking for a third-party site for a particular purpose, and asking where to ask for that, rather than simply asking "how can I determine which community to ask on?": meta.stackexchange.com/questions/315546/…

10:08 AM
> This content is not available in your country due to a legal complaint from the government.
Again, that's not the message showing in the one linked before, that one only says "unavailable" without any reason.
I'm still almost sure it's some internal error, not country block.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Interesting that that site that shows a map, uses it as an outdated example. (Click that link from earlier and scroll past the map)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog so it's just off topic and should be closed and deleted. No point to bother reopening.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I reached it from the site, yes.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard It's not asking for the site itself, it's asking which community to ask for a site.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog so it's duplicate... sorry, not sure why you think it's not in such case.
"looking for a third-party site" is 100% off topic on MSE.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard You don't seem to understand.
@Xufox , I'd like to ask if there is a site that allowed me to create a art competition online and let participants have like a login, and let participants upload content, and provide the result to me. — mathmaniage 2 hours ago

10:12 AM
"asking which community to ask for a site" is on topic, but duplicate.
And that covers all the corners.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Okay, but the current duplicate target is unhelpful because it just says "ask on MSE".

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog true, it says "ask on MSE". What about it? Why not helpful?

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I've edited the question to make it clear what the user is asking.

Er... @SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I don't think arguing with someone over how to use their reopen vote is productive
Let it go, please

Worst case would be the OP asking it on MSE, got downvoted, and received answers: "none, there's no SE site for this."
or just, off-topic: unrelated to SE.

10:16 AM
The user asked a question, "where do I ask this question?". It was closed as a duplicate of a question that asks how to find out where to ask questions. The answer to that is to ask on MSE where to ask the question, which the user already did.
@Somewhat You should read the question in question and see if it's on-topic or not.

People can browse the sites and decide what to do themselves @SonictheInclusiveHedgehog

@JourneymanGeek Shadow decided themselves to reopen the question.

Just read the question. Yes, it's on-topic. No, there's no such SE sites, and I'm ready to downvote it.

Yeah, it was totally unclear at first, now it's fine. Reopened.
All good now, let's get back to watching dancing cats! :D
(assuming they're not blocked in our country ;))

That said, SE used a site like that to decide SO's logo in 2008

10:20 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Yup, still have a pair of those in dad's basement.

@Fabby and the other shoes? :p

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Swedish proxy server: 85.224.225.253
@JourneymanGeek Other shoes? those are ... nearly 30 years old and still good!
Actually: I still have a pair of black dress shoes from the army too (somewhere)

@Fabby well because nobody is using them... ;)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard :-) My point exactly!

@Fabby but I did use my shoes. :)

10:25 AM
(It's like the concrete biscuits of the army)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard That was the stuff never to eat and keep around until you were starving...

@Fabby the comfy red ones :p

(or crumble them up, add condensed milk and a bit of water and then boil... that made for a nice dessert)

@Fabby no no no... that one is:
It's actual spam. :D
Meat loaf, preserved.

10:28 AM
flagged as spam, literally.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard SPAM is made from porc... Lemme look up what I'm talking aobut

So here it was just meat from unknown animals, but no porc. :D

porc...elain

Hardtack (or hard tack) is a simple type of biscuit or cracker, made from flour, water, and sometimes salt. Hardtack is inexpensive and long-lasting. It is used for sustenance in the absence of perishable foods, commonly during long sea voyages, land migrations, and military campaigns. == Etymology == The name is derived from "tack", the British sailor slang for food. It is known by other names such as brewis (possibly a cognate with "brose"), cabin bread, pilot bread, sea biscuit, "soda crackers", sea bread (as rations for sailors), ship's biscuit, or pejoratively as "dog biscuits", "mol...
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Mostly horse meat then.

10:29 AM
Reminds me of Dwarf Bread

(is horse kosher? (it's a herbivore)

@Fabby hehe not sure...

@πάνταῥεῖ Yup! There is always mum's dwarven bread!

Seriously though, the meat used for the army "meat loaf" is the leftovers of factories making food like burgers.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Yeah, triple translation needed: Ancient Hebrew to modern Hebrew to English.
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Ah "Pink slime"
"Pink slime" (a derogatory term for lean finely textured beef or LFTB, finely textured beef, and boneless lean beef trimmings or BLBT) is a meat by-product used as a food additive to ground beef and beef-based processed meats, as a filler, or to reduce the overall fat content of ground beef. In the production process, heat and centrifuges remove fat from the meat in beef trimmings. The resulting paste is exposed to ammonia gas or citric acid to kill bacteria. In 2001, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved the product for limited human consumption. LFTB prepared using ammonia...

10:31 AM
@Fabby don't think so... hooves?
(that said, I'm not an expert in kosher because I'm not observing it...)

@Somewhat Ah yeah; they need to be split, right?

... I'll just assume Fabby misspelled "pork", and did in no way intend to eat porcupine.

@JohnDvorak En Français c'est porc.
I get confused sometimes as neither is my mother tongue.

Though I wouldn't be against tasting porcupine...

English is only my Third or Fourth language, depending on how you count.

10:33 AM
1... 2... 6?

0,1,10...

@Fabby hmm. Cloven hooves, chews cud. I ain't no rabbi but it's possible.

Did Israelites eat camels?

Anyway horses cost lots of money, can't see any reason to kill them for their meat...

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard When I was a kid and the US still exported horse meat to Europe, it was cheap meat.

10:36 AM
Tldr: categorically camels are non kosher

Neither horse nor camels are kosher.

Oh. Non split hooves on horses

We don't eat animals we use to ride, it's rude. :P

There was a big affair just a few years ago where Poland would package horse meat, label it as beef, and sell it in Czechia.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard you can ride a bull. Sometimes for more than a few seconds

10:38 AM
@JohnDvorak It's slightly darker and sweeter than beef.

So is unicorn...
1 1

@Fabby and tastes like chicken?

Chicken. It always tastes like chicken.

chicken is the white noise baseline of meat

@JourneymanGeek Tastes like beef but sweeter.
@Somewhat Nope, it's red meat.
10 mins ago, by Fabby
English is only my Third or Fourth language, depending on how you count.
Sometimes I get confused.
my fingers type something different than my brain thinks.
I can get into trouble in 10 languages but only out of trouble in 6...

10:44 AM
It's okay... ever since I learn Japanese, my English vocabulary diminished slowly...

10:57 AM
I'm able to recognize katakana/hiragana as such (but not which is which)

@JourneymanGeek that... doesn't count. :D
@Somewhat huh? Yours?
@Fabby so you're banned in four languages? ;)

I tend to be politically incorrect, yes...
I tend to say fireman in English because firefighter just sounds too much like firefarter.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Fabby lol
Well lots of words get whole other, dirty, meaning by changing single letter, so...
Here in Israel the actual Hebrew word has been changed not long ago.

Yeah, I was once invited to HR to get the finer points of the letter i and a explained to me because I called a lady a silly twat. (I misspoke and didn't even know what a "twat" was until then)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard no, just found from someone's SE staff stalker monitoring page...

11:07 AM
It used to be "כבאי" which means, in free translation, "someone who extinguish fire" aka fireman, and it changed officially to "לוחם אש" which is direct translation of "fire fighter".
Firemen/fighters get much more respect since a big disaster 8 years ago:
The Mount Carmel Forest Fire (Hebrew: אסון הכרמל Ason HaKarmel, "The Carmel Disaster") was a deadly forest fire that started on Mount Carmel in northern Israel, just south of Haifa. The fire began at about 11:00 local time on 2 December 2010, and spread quickly, consuming much of the Mediterranean forest covering the region. The fire claimed 44 lives, making it the deadliest in Israeli history. The dead were mostly Israel Prison Service officer cadets, as well as three senior police officers, among them the chief of Haifa's police. More than 17,000 people were evacuated, including several villages...

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard is there male / female / genderless in Hebrew?

@Fabby male/female yes, not sure what you mean by "neutre".

Male: "he" Female "she", genderless: "it"

e.g. male firefighter is "כבאי" and female firefighter is "כבאית" though that word is also used to describe the vehicle used by the firefighters, so it's kind of a mess. :)

(French word slipping in again)

11:10 AM
Anyway it's now changed to "לוחם אש" for male and "לוחמת אש" for female. :D
@Fabby well, kind of... we have generic word for "it".
@Somewhat so you also know Eggs... though it's not a bot. Wonder if Jeff still got that account credentials... lol

@Fabby Not really. Default is male.

@Mithrandir Like French: male and female only. There are only 2 genderless words "On" = "some people" or "we" and "ça" = "that"
Thanks, because I only know 5 words in Hebrew: Shalom, shekel; lo, ken and hassid.
(of which "Lo!" is the most important one!) ;-)

@Fabby lol, that's... interesting mix. :D

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Well, that is because a "hassid Jew" in my native language is "Orthodoxe Jood", so it doesn't translate well and I was made aware of the distinction.

@Fabby Now I smell something interesting. Explain?

11:22 AM
(I.E. when you wear a kippa, in my language you're an "orthodox jew" = you're showing that you're a jew)
if you don't wear one but are still religious and eat kosher as much as you can and wear the kippa in the synagogue, you're not...

There, you just said a sixth Hebrew word ;)

(remember my colleague not wanting to inconvenience me by eating at my place? One of those: took me 3 years to find out he was Jewish)
@Mithrandir Synagogue???

@Fabby probably kippa :P

@Tinkeringbell :D :D :D
In my native language "Keppel"
What's it called in English? Kippa, right?

@Fabby Dutch is your native language?

11:27 AM
@Tinkeringbell Dutch is my second language.

@Fabby skullcap

@Tinkeringbell (but we have a lot of words in common)
But if I want to, you won't understand diddley...

@Fabby Hmmm.. then what were you raised with... Afrikaans? Surinaams? Vlaams?
Please tell me it's not Fries :P

@Tinkeringbell Vlaams.
@Tinkeringbell :D
Why do the Fries have such a bad name in The NL?

@Fabby More of a running joke. ;)

11:29 AM
Fries is one of the oldest languages in Europe.

It's a very different dialect from ABN
@Fabby I know... barbaric :P

@Tinkeringbell They dropped the "B" a few years ago.
It's AN now.

@Fabby I like that B.
I'm keeping it
Just like Pluto is still a planet for me

@Tinkeringbell That's because you still are and most other are not!

11:30 AM
@Fabby yeah, "kippa" is the Hebrew word.

@Fabby Probably :P

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard The official literal translation of the Common Dutch spoken in NL and BE is:
General Civilised Dutch = Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard ABN stands for 'Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands' or 'Common Civilized Dutch'. They dropped the civilized ;)

Because hey, people are civilized if they don't speak civilized Dutch!
(are they though? :P)

11:32 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard nowaydays it's just "General Dutch", they dropped the "civilised"

@Tinkeringbell Biiiirdddd....

so much stuff's gone... ;p
I mean, Brontosaurus!

@JourneymanGeek Yeah...

... wait, they are a thing again

11:33 AM
Flemish has more in Common with Afrikaans than with Dutch, but as the Flemish and the Dutch live close to one another, we can understand one another if we want to.

@Fabby huh? Fries are those potato stick in deep oil...
:D

Friesland

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Those are too skinny to be proper Flemish Fries!

Friesland (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈfrislɑnt] ( listen); official, West Frisian: Fryslân [ˈfrislɔːn] ( listen)), also historically known as Frisia, is a province of the Netherlands located in the northern part of the country. It is situated west of Groningen, northwest of Drenthe and Overijssel, north of Flevoland, northeast of North Holland, and south of the Wadden Sea. In 2015, the province had a population of 646,092 and a total area of 5,100 km2 (2,000 sq mi). The capital and seat of the provincial government is the city of Leeuwarden (West Frisian: Ljouwert), a city with 91,817 inhabitants....

@Fabby That sounds like some kind of 'luilekkerland' if you don't speak Dutch :P

11:35 AM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I also prefer the thick version, aka Potato wedges.... :P

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Nah, wedges are something different again ;)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard dagelijksekost.een.be/gerechten/…

Potato wedges are wedges of potatoes, often large and unpeeled, that are either baked or fried. They are sold at diners and fast food restaurants. In Australia, potato wedges are a common bar food, that are almost always served with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce. They are usually seasoned with a variety of spices, commonly paprika, salt and pepper. == Disambiguation == When compared to steak-cut chips (UK), fries (US and global), roasted potatoes or crinkle-cut chips (UK), a wedge could be defined as having distinct corners when viewed as a cross-section perpendicular to the normal- a...

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Nah! Look at my link.

For me it's just "thick french fries"... :P

11:36 AM
ah. Chips? ;p

(well, look at the pics)

@Fabby can't understand the language, but pic appears to be the same food... :)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Nah: cut is different, washing method is different; fat is different (oxen fat) and frying method is different (double fry)

"oxen fat" 0_0

Fat from... ox? o_P

11:39 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard yup.
@JourneymanGeek Oxen white = Oxen fat
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard (nowadays it' mostly beef fat, but hey, that's irrelevant...)

@Tinkeringbell: do you still use "Ossewit" in NL?
(can you still buy it???)

All those foods are super unhealthy, that's for sure.. :D

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Not really.

@Fabby you can

11:44 AM
Lots of fat, salt...

if you only eat fries once every 2 weeks, oxen fat is good for you.
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I cook without salt.
None...

We use the liquid stuff though

@Tinkeringbell Cool!

@Fabby no salt no taste

@Tinkeringbell Most people in Belgium use that too nowadays: much cheaper!

11:45 AM
@Tinkeringbell liquid fat?!

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I've had 100s of people tell me: "That was saltless???"
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Oil.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard At least it's not fried sweetened butter

@Fabby oh. but... of course oil is liquid.... no?

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Just use 3* more herbs!!!

11:46 AM
Here this guy demonstrates a way to make fries using very little oil

For when you want the heart attack and you want it now

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Same in English: no one uses "lipids" but use "fat" instead.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard 'Frituurolie' is basically a form of sunflower oil, but it's treated so it can be heated hotter

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog All the tools you need to make the best Belgian fries is: a knife, oxen fat and a kettle
All the other stuff is superfluous.

11:50 AM
Fairly certain you need actual potatoes too

@Magisch No cardiac disease in my family for the last 4 generations.
(Maybe I'm the first though)

@Fabby Have you ever eaten a sweetened deep fried stick of pure butter with cholocate frosting?

@Magisch Did you watch Sonic's video? it was all about the tools...

There's three sorts of stuff for frying: Frying fat - which is mainly animal based, liquid frying fat - which is a combination of unhardened plant fats and oils, and frying oil which is made from plant oils like sunflower or palm oil

@Magisch Isn't that called an Elvis? (I'm aware of a heart attack on a plate, but I don't like the taste of butter all by itself, so never tried)
I have had a Hershy bar though!
(Once! Never again!)

11:52 AM
I never tried it either, because I like living
What is a hershey bar?

@Magisch Hershey!
@Magisch American Chocolate.

sounds gross

Hershey tastes like Belgian chocolate but with a faint burnt taste.
AFK. Smoke!

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard He's addicted, it's called pyromania ;)
Quick question... does anyone know if there's an MSE post on what kinds of usernames are and aren't appropriate?
My search bar skills seem to be failing me ;)

12:01 PM
@Fabby 'chocolate'
@Tinkeringbell not really

Hmm. That's helpful :P

Q: Should profane user names be prohibited?

EJKI know that profanity is discouraged in SO posts. However I recently saw a user with the F-word in his name. Just out of curiosity, I searched for other users with the same word and found many hits - see below. Personally this does not offend me. I just wonder how others feel about it, and if...

I'd start here

@JourneymanGeek Thanks :D

But there's no definite post imo

Would one be needed? It would probably allow a lot of rules lawyering if made explicit :/

@JourneymanGeek yeah... nothing set in stone just yet, it's mainly common sense and "it's OK until someone is really offended by that".

Q: What are the rules governing display names and avatars?

PopsThe discussion in this train wreck of a "question" led me to think of a real question. What display names and avatars are off-limits on the Stack Exchange network? I think I remember seeing a fake Jeff Atwood in the past on Meta, and a fake Jon Skeet on SO. If I recall correctly, the former had ...

@Tinker ^

deja Vu...

@Tinkeringbell adding to what Ye Oldie Room Pet Dog (@Journeyman) said, I would like to point out that is already problematic to get users with offensive profiles / avatars removed... so good luck to get someone acting on names.

12:07 PM
Thanks. Just keep them coming, I'll try to keep up with it ;)

@Somewhat bug in the Matrix?

@Derpy This used to be my avatar. Changed it because it was not very welcoming, but it was at a time when I knew little about Ubuntu and I ended up answering more than asking, so I changed it.

@Derpy I'm a mod. I can act on names, I am just trying to find out if I should ;)

@Tinkeringbell think you should act only when someone complains. (Unless of course it's something obvious)

12:10 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Hmmm. ;)

@Tinkeringbell "Neuker" is a perfectly reasonable User name on the SE network...
:D ;-)

@Tinkeringbell Now I'm curious about the name?

@Fabby I guess Pancake would be acceptable too ;)

I kind of want to rename myself to pancake now
and put a picture of a pancake as avatar

12:12 PM
@Fabby Well this one (NSFW name!!) isn't, but since MSE has no mods, can't do much about it.
oh wait... we can try.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Not that unsafe...

@Magisch Hmm... maybe not the best thing to discuss the appropriateness of specific usernames in here?

@JNat can you please reset the display name of this user, across both sites? Thanks! :)

That's mainly why I was looking for a generic post, not a list of what is/isn't acceptable :P

@Magisch pretty sure that we had such user before... e.g. @Some was lots of things in the past. :D

12:15 PM

@Magisch "Pancakes" = Female breasts pressed against glass.

And then get a new fresh strawberry

@Fabby in what language??? lol

12:16 PM
@Fabby Pretty sure a pancake is a type of egg based pastry you make in a pan.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard English. Urban dictionary.

@Fabby oh, the famous UD... well it contains lots of stuff like that. :D

You can find dirty meaning to lots of clean words there...

Everything is rude in the right context, and my opinion is that nothing is rude in the right context...

12:19 PM
yeah, probably best to keep the rude meanings away from here though

@Fabby problem is, usually the right context is easy to miss, and many people just see the rude/dirty part. :)

Especially in chat!!!

(I think I've confirmed a flagged post as offensive only once...)

So here in Tavern, pancakes are just pancakes. ;)

@Derpy you used to have a bot serving cupcakes... is it still alive?

(pancake is a mildly funny way of calling someone an idiot in Dutch. Nothing to do with breasts)

@Tinkeringbell I think I've done it a few times

@JourneymanGeek I'm going to now ;) Just preparing the message so I can press most buttons simultaneously and people won't have to wait half an hour while I write the messages wondering what happened! :P

@JourneymanGeek Oh yeah, almost forgot my ego :D

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I very deliberately did not ping.

12:29 PM
@Magisch oh, right! I was sure you did! lol

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard the "bot" was javascript based

So probably he missed your message anyway. :/

I avoid pinging staff members unless it's necessary. For pleasantries, they can either see them or not if they want

@JourneymanGeek Weird. the template starts with "I'm" :P

@Derpy lots of proper bots are

12:30 PM
I'll edit ;)

@Tinkeringbell probably never updated from the olden days...

@Tinkeringbell !!! Someone should be flogged with a wet noodle for ignoring the unwritten style guide.
