12:03 PM

12:30 PM
@Tinkeringbell pretty smart in a "Gosh you're an idiot" kind of way

@Bart I like those kinds of random thought though. Even if they're idiotic, they make me smile :)

What makes me smile is the guy who burned his Nike shoes out of protest ... while wearing them.
And then tweeted an update of him in the hospital with burns.

@Bart Well... Tibetan monks used to something similar :/ Not that I'd recommend it. And although I know about people burning Nike stuff, I must admit I don't know why they're doing it. Some kind of protest against an ad?

Yeah, along those lines. Black athletes in the US have been protesting the oppression of black people by kneeling during he national anthem. Particularly in the NFL. That was quite the controversy with the great Orange one of course tweeting about it. One of the main players now features in a Nike ad, so of course as a true Americun (fuck yeah) you have to protest Nike now

Okay. Makes sense :P

12:39 PM
Since August 2016, some U.S. athletes have silently protested against "systematic oppression", "equality and social injustice", "racism and injustice in our criminal system", "oppression of people of color in the United States", and to not "show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color" during the playing of the U.S. national anthem. Many players since 2017 have started to protest against the policies of President Donald Trump. The demonstrations have generated mixed reactions. Some have described them as politically urgent or patriotic, while others have called...

@Bart Hmmm. Sounds like something people other than me should figure out ;)

As long as you don't mean me, I agree :p

@Magisch check
@Bart It's a case of "I don't care who does it, but if I get home and it still isn't done, y'all be grounded!". I know, I'm a terrible manager.

I like y'all be grounded. I'm going to use that soon

12:49 PM
@rene Not here, I hope?

You don't want to be grounded by rene. He might root you

@Magisch I'll prepare some roundup just in case ;)

@Tinkeringbell nah IRL

Y'all have this positive charge feeling...

@Somewhat you make it sound like that's a bad thing!
@rene Careful... grounding didn't really work for me, as I rather stayed at home anyways :P

12:52 PM
uh oh, I'll be grounded

@Somewhat Nah, you won't be grounded for feeling... less positive? :)

@Magisch pretty sure it's a spam seed

"I swer i'll root ye!" - 19th century british working class rene

@Tinkeringbell most of my team works from home anyway. I suppose that should boost productivity ...

@rene Depends... I'm more distracted when working at home
although today is just as bad.

12:54 PM
Working from home never worked for me.

Who in the world thought having an ice cream cart in an open office floor plan was a good idea?!?

raises hand

@rene are you a team manager?

Its too noisy!

@Magisch I act as scrummaster atm

12:56 PM
somehow I can't imagine you as a stern scrummaster
you come across somewhat ... mellow in your online presence
like the impossible to anger guy

you dream on then ;)

@Magisch Heh. That's because you can't truly be Dutch on an SE chat :P

You know I've never actually seen an aggressive dutch person
All the dutch people just come across as impossibly polite
You disliked this conversation

@Magisch Hahaha... cause that's all what's left once you filter everything ;)
E.g., where I'd usually say 'this needs to be fixed', on SE I remind myself to go 'Could you please fix this'
It's also not that we're that aggressive, but more ... blunt?
(which can in turn come off as aggressive)

1:05 PM
that ^

oh, wow... she(?) finally replied...
now I'm waiting until she finished typing...

You disliked this conversation - Comedy gold

oh apparently she's copying Wikipedia...

@Tinkeringbell I have had a few cases where a comment of mine was interpreted as aggressive while there was not a single moment I intended or felt the need to be blunt and/or aggressive

@Somewhat I'm 99% sure the human you're talking to is an indian mid 20s guy in a call center called Kumar
I know from friends of mine from india that customer service type call centers like to change the names of their employees
Because it comes across as "more familiar" to westeners

1:09 PM
@rene Yep...
I think one of my earliest IPS answers demonstrated that too. The question was about how to explain to people that you didn't like every conversation turning out into something that was about teaching these people new concepts (abstract maths or something?)
Perfectly normal Dutch reply: I didn't study to become a teacher, and there's a reason I did so!
Couldn't count on much sympathy ;)

lol

For those curious, on this question

@Magisch a lot of people in those jobs are women too

@Tinkeringbell And I would have no problem with that response ...

Comment:
> "There is a reason I haven't become a teacher, explaining all this makes the evening really boring for me." Ouch!
Got two upvotes, so I'm guessing that correlates with the downvotes ;)

1:15 PM
@Aibobot Doesn't change the fact that they'll often westernize their names

@rene Yeah, I thought it would be funny, not offend people. Just like.. do you know that sketch of Herman Finkers on 'mijn schoonouders konden geen kinderen krijgen'?
That's not appreciated outside of the Netherlands either, it seems ;)

@Tinkeringbell yep. I know @Bart will like that one as well ...

:D

see ...

Back in the day I could recite entire shows. Saw a number of them live.

1:18 PM
We should have a Dutch comedy night in here, and just derail the entire room! :P

@Magisch it does not

It's such a shame that Finker's humour often doesn't translate. I can never use it here

Grapje on the Meta?

@Bart That goes for a lot of good Dutch cabaret ;)
(including the jokes made at our dinner table)
@Somewhat I like that ;)

True. Although Finkers in particular plays with language a lot

1:22 PM
This is my ring tone

Hahahaha

I have Jochem Myers 'wakker worden' as alarm :)

That is also a great one! I just heard that this morning again at Giel!

For those that want to watch: youtu.be/RsMgIocbNPU?t=49. Wakker worden = Wake up!

1:25 PM
@Aibobot Wait... so that's where 'ringtone' comes from? :)

yup

I was confused, why would you call it 'ringing'?

o0
I think the sarcasm is really thick ;p

@Aibobot Yep! Also, look what I found! A 3d print of the 'save' icon: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/…

If I had a lawn, young lady, I would request you vacate it at once.

1:27 PM
o0

@Aibobot That's why I sent it to you, I know you didn't have a lawn! :D

(my phone rings. My notification sound however... is a steam horn CHOO CHOO)

I once had this really funny ringtone, which said in a creepy voice 'Don't be afraid, it's your mother calling' with spooky noises in the back. Until I had my phone at the register and it went off...

annnd I just turned off my speakers in my home PC from my phone ;p
TECHNOLOGY!
@Tinkeringbell the fun part is my office PC has audible alerts that sound like a 90s phone ringtone

@JourneymanGeek I think mine still has the 'normal' windows sounds
That haven't changed since... ever?

1:33 PM
oh this is the alerting/monitoring app.
the one that sometimes crashes

ding.wav

One of my friends while in college had a sneeze as her ringtone. It was a great idea in concept but the sneeze she chose was a baby's sneeze, so it still didn't really blend in.

Well the reason I use the Steam horn sound is its unique and I can hear it over anything

I think when I was still in school, there was this thing of a laughing baby that just went on an on an on, that was popular

ahh got my own laptop up
\o/

1:35 PM
The first ringtone I got was still 'ordered' by sms, via a code off the paper tv guide
@JourneymanGeek Yay, you're back!

For certain values of back lol

Don't worry. I'll keep you busy here :P

Wow, I suddenly remember Nokia Composer. Had a heck of fun back in school...

yup
oldschool yo

Okay, I don't remember that one. I never had a nokia though ;)

1:39 PM
Too bad! :(
I think Motorola also had a similar one...

@Somewhat My first phone was a teeny tiny motorola
Looked a lot like this one, although I'm not sure it's that one i.stack.imgur.com/A24jl.jpg#.png

I blame you @Tinkeringbell and @rene for the fact that I'm now listening to the 2015 oudejaarsconference.

you're welcome
Make sure to laugh loudly ... :D

That happens far too often here. And then you're listening to Jim Jefferies and you have to explain what you're laughing about ...

2:16 PM
@Bart blame? Ah well, I finally managed to do something right then today

high five

@Tinkeringbell what about the middles then?

user310756
@Aibobot oh no! My sound is rarely on. Only got my kids.

@YvetteColomb too slow :P

user310756
@Tinkeringbell hehe I quite like that

user310756
@Tinkeringbell oh no, it's so bad it's almost al dente

3:59 PM
@YvetteColomb hehehe... It's better than real life pasta though ;)

4:48 PM
@Magisch I just have to fake it and I'm fine.

@Mithrandir don't think you have to fake
most people who don't know you very well estimate you around 25

:D
(Still catching up on the last 50 hours... lots of backlog.)

@Mithrandir Want a summary? You didn't miss anything :P

Not just here, all across SE... I had 15 chat pings

Seems like you're popular

4:59 PM
@Mithrandir One of them is mine, the comment bot feedback broke.
(I may have pinged you twice about that, I forgot)

Yeah, you have to restart when that happens. There's also a bug at times, that I don't know how to fix.

@Tinkeringbell LOL, that's great!

@πάνταῥεῖ It's about the only funny thing on Imgur I could find today ;)
Rest is all 9/11 memorial posts

Yeah, big hype today as every year :/

5:34 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ Okay. Going to say it, but calling it a hype feels slightly disrespectful to me.

Hmm, I didn't mean to be disrespectful or impious.

Might have been a language thingy, but a hype is generally something that's really popular now and forgotten next month or year....
So yeah, it's getting a lot of attention today, but I wouldn't call it hyped.
Because next year people will be remembering again... as they probably will for decades to come
(Ugh, I'm sounding like a mod again, am I?)

TBH at that very day when it happened I was laying sick at home, and then every TV broadcast station started to show nothing else than these horrible news, and I even got more sick of it :(

@πάνταῥεῖ I was only 9... I think these are the first fragments of news reports I can remember.

My "thoughts and prayers" are still with the victims.

5:40 PM
And we didn't really know until the first tower went down. Dad came home from work, and told mom to turn on the tv.
(I think they argued about sending me to my room and not having me watch it)

That day is burned into my brain :/
I don't need anyone to remind me ...

Okay, change of topic?

Appreciated

Do you have anything fun to talk about? My day was pretty boring :)

Unfortunately I'm doing my regular work of closing bad questions at SO, so not really ;)

5:44 PM

@πάνταῥεῖ Yuk. I'm glad I don't have the rep on SO to feel responsible for doing that :)
@Fabby Yeah, I always use a soldering iron like that too :P
she's not using... 'soldeertin'

@Fabby Definitely that baby eating the paint brush!

5:47 PM
Since it's almost Halloween: i.stack.imgur.com/5xyT7.jpg#.png
@Fabby Hehehe... So how would you explain a day of your life to an alien?

@Tinkeringbell I don't get the ra-ra and peplum ones.

@Fabby They're styles of skirts, IIRC
Like this: google.nl/… and this: google.nl/…

@Tinkeringbell Urgh...
@Tinkeringbell I like the designer one best.
Need some more cheering up?

@Fabby @πάνταῥεῖ maybe could ;) I'm okay.
I should crochet some ghost stuff for Halloween.

5:51 PM
I am not really unhappy doing that, it's somehow like a janitor cleaning up the house :)

I'm the 4th most pinged human on the network for the year.

I like this one: i.pinimg.com/736x/f3/44/ec/… but it might be a tad too complicated to do in micro

@Mithrandir Nice! Lemme go pint the AU mods.

@Mithrandir Makes me fifth, and catching up quickly. You're probably cheating with that comment bot anyways :P

Poor you: just shows you're *too nice, Mithrandir
Damn! I wanted to avoid pinging you!

5:54 PM
heh

@Tinkeringbell :D :D :D
I was expecting another ping graph!!!

@Fabby Hehehe :P Nother pattern: i2.wp.com/2.bp.blogspot.com/_9ZejtvlHPaE/SsiRGkhpUMI/…. Might be more easily doable. Or I could redo cthulhu in thread...

Re-do? So you've done it already?

This ... but in green i.stack.imgur.com/eWmsF.jpg#.png
@Fabby Made one of these once:

6:07 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ Why is that unclear?
Seems clear enough to me....

Because I doubt about that being a bug regarding e-mail addresses containing a dot.
I can't see any evidence from the question.
sd 2k

@Mithrandir :/

@Catija You take the cake, though. *offers honey cake*

Oooh. :D Happy New Year!

:D thanks

6:18 PM
@Mithrandir So you are jewish as Shadow too?

@πάνταῥεῖ Yep. That's why I wasn't around last two days.

rosh hashanah
Digest the gefilte fish well ;)

Yeah, didn't have any of that ;)

Just partying sounds fine for me ...

@πάνταῥεῖ I always try to weasel my way out of that.

6:23 PM
Now I have to reset my weekly clock, though... because it's feeling like Saturday night when it's Tuesday night.

@Tinkeringbell You'll learn that when gettin' old like me ;)

@πάνταῥεῖ Ehhh... I hope not :P
I like partying, just not after 12 ;)

When I was 30 it wasn't any problem to party all night long and over that. Now it would take me 3 days for one night to overcome it well.
I still like partying of course tho.

I've never been a party animal :)
In fact, my mom once made the ridiculous threat of 'If you don't go, you're grounded!'
We had fun over that one ;) Still have

Thus we found a more cheerful and entertaining topic at least?

6:32 PM
My mom? Don't get me started :P
Also... I'm disappointed you weren't cheered up by the cute crochet!

I believe I posted this yesterday already ;)

@πάνταῥεῖ I didn't click it I think... but that intro and picture look like that's about to get really noisy

Mothers are weird beasts ....

@πάνταῥεῖ Sometimes you love em, sometimes you hate em
I mostly dislike mine when I notice I'm sounding exactly like her ;)

@Tinkeringbell Not that much noisy, listen to the lyrics.
@Tinkeringbell He, he, that's true, same for my father of course.
We behave as we were taught to do, that's an immanent pity :P

6:39 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ There's this Dutch song... one of the lines of the chorus translates to 'But dad, I'm looking more like you every day'
I like that song :)
I really like this one too: youtu.be/RbqF6Xv1mNU

I am not looking like my dad, thankful to the universe for that at least :)

I'm short and fat, like most of dads family. But I've got the smarts and sense of humor from my mom
And depending on whether or not I wear glasses and tie up my hair, people seem to think my face looks either like mom or dad

You can't deny your heritage, you'll just get used to it and deal with it a better way.

Yup. First think I'll do when I have a place of my own is never invite over dads side of the family (grandparents excepted)

That's also one of the funny patterns, grandparents are generally better accepted than parents :D

6:44 PM
VLQ flag doesn't make the flagger downvote the post automatically?

@πάνταῥεῖ Ehhh... mine aren't. But that's a different story ;)

@Nog I believe that auto downvotes are reserved for spam / rude abusive and such.

22
A: Let's Remove The Auto Downvote On Validated VLQ Flags (On Questions)

Shog9Since it's pretty much my fault that VLQ comes with an automatic downvote to begin with, I feel like I should weigh in on this. I feel very strongly that we should not be removing posts we aren't even comfortable slapping a downvote on. For all the hand-wringing about downvotes over the years, ...

@πάνταῥεῖ Yes, but what is the outcome of this discussion?

I wasn't aware of that discussion

7:07 PM
heh, I was already famous in 2014.

That's at least 4 years ago ...

2 hours later…
9:35 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ A hardy perennial.

9:49 PM
@rene this... better be removed. Did it now. but... I was mentioned in not-so-good reference back in 2011. I win! :P

meh

meh for "better remove" or for "I win"? ;)
Wait... why aren't you sleeping?? @rene

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard "better remove"

Flowers should get a good long night sleep... :D

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Why aren't you sleeping...?

9:52 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard yeah, I'm on my way to bed

@Mithrandir I go to sleep at 2-2:30 every night, that's my routine. :)
@rene good!

I know that schedule... that's very similar to mine.

@Mithrandir but... aren't you at school?

Nope, I'm homeschooled.

I don't see myself allowing my children to stay up so late. ;)
@Mithrandir oh, nice.. but still... parents?

9:54 PM
They're not happy about it, but... that's when I'm most productive.

My children know that 18 is the magic number: once they become 18 they can do whatever they want... but until then, they must do what we (parents) tell them to do.
So far it's working... but we still got looong way ahead. Oldest is 8. lol
@Mithrandir heh.. so what did you produce tonight? :P

around a page of improved English

actually... need to finish some small task in sportiada site before getting back to work tomorrow, so... cya! :D
blaming @rene for delaying me
wut
Better!

10:16 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard You should drop by in the den as kenny won't appreciate the humour...
:-) ;-) :-)
