@PaulWhite made it clearer this is a sock - as per your concerns. I cannot for the life of me remember why that was removed.
Or I will if the profile edit page dosen't stop glitching out
There done. Also changed location from "The Internet" to

Also Morning!
@Somewhat Personally I think its also "How have I been unwelcoming?"
Also "How can I better help a new user with making the most of SE?"
Which I think is just as important - a lot of the comments I post to new users getting it wrong are aimed at letting them know why the comment or question they just posted as an answer got deleted

2:10 AM
Does SmokeDetector also check for text in HTML comments?
Like if I write a perfectly good answer (or question), but with an HTML comment like <!-- viagra penis enlargement free bitcoins spam@gmail.com -->, will it flag it?

Charcoal HQ is the official chat room for Smokey's developer, I think you'll get the answer quicker on there

 Charcoal HQ

Where smoke is detected, diamonds are made, and we break thing...

Ah, thanks!

Anyway, ugh, morning...
Workday between holidays... (yeah, tomorrow is also a new year and thus holiday on some countries)

(turns out it will not flag it since it's not in the rendered output)

@forest no
If you do find something like that, custom flag
I'm sure the mods will find it entertaining for about 2 seconds before they nuke the post and user

2:21 AM
heh
Actually, it looks like the comment doesn't actually become a comment on the page, so I guess it's only visible if you click edit and see it.

Looks like it, because they depend on SEDE's output which only provide Body rendered text,, but no markdown source.
Anyway, is the screenshot one of Diamond Mod's tools?

3:03 AM
Ya

3:22 AM
Say, can mods edit comments?
Like if I made an embarrassing typo, but I can't edit the comment since it's been over 5 minutes, and I can't delete it and re-post it since that would break the flow of the comments, can I flag it to get it edited?

@forest Yes
BUUUUUT its a waste of our time in most cases
So I wouldn't recommend doing it

@PaulUszak You are comparing apples and oranges. With Go, you can tell when you are winning or losing, and each move gives you feedback. Do you still think deep learning could excel at Go if it wasn't allowed to see the opponent's response or the current board state, and had to win a trillion trillion trillion trillion games in a row before it is able to learn that it has even one a single game? — forest yesterday
I just spelled "won" as "one". I have no idea how idea that happened.
I really wish I could edit comments after 5 minutes. I guess I'll have to live with it. :(

lol
I'm not mad enough at the crypto mods to say "go flag it" ;)

:P
Were there actually problems with people intentionally editing their comments to break the flow of the conversation or to maliciously change the meaning of the comment to make replies look bad? Or were comments always locked after 5 minutes?

Its always been that way I think
least as far as I can remember

Will you be asking Twitter the same question?

to console the "forever alone"? :(

Cause apparently twitter is the helldesk of the internet
hmmm
Speaking of twitter
If you think posting smartass comments and gifs in an already tense GitHub thread will help, you're wrong. When a decision is made, disagreeing in the form of being an asshole will cause absolutely no one to change their mind and get on your side. Don't be that person.

@Catija I think I should. Another time.
@JourneymanGeek It's a thread. I saw it in the morning. Started my day with that tweet

@OptimusPrime Which github thread is that tweet referring to?

interesting topic on academia: academia.stackexchange.com/questions/116460/…

8:50 AM
@Magisch Hmmm. Weird way of grading stuff, enforcing an average of 85

I've never actually heard of a teacher doing that here

@Magisch Me neither. Maybe it's a culture thing, since I've never heard of curved grades over here either.

That'd mean I could get an A for either 80/100 points on an exam or 100/100 points on an exam, depending on how classmates did. Wouldn't it then be in my best interest to not help classmates in understanding the material, since them scoring higher means I necessarily score lower?

Heh... the one time I did help someone with their geography, they retook the test and scored higher than I did initially :/

Like if I'm reasonably confident I can score a 90% on a test. That'd mean that if I helped all my classmates who were struggling to also score my 90, I'd get a lower grade then if I had done nothing

8:54 AM
Yeah, it's a weird way of grading

The only thing teachers used to do here is when they severely botched the grading scale on an exam they'd take out specific tasks from counting against you
One example was a specific task in the last year second intermediary math exam I did. The task was completly off in terms of challenge and only 2/25 people completed it.

Yep, same here. If a question e.g. wasn't covered well in class, and counted too heavy towards the end results, it's taken out

In education, marking on a curve (BE) or grading on a curve (AE, CE) (also referred to as curved grading, bell curving, or using grading curves) is a method of assigning grades to the students in a class in such a way as to obtain a pre-specified distribution of these grades, such as a normal distribution (also called Gaussian distribution). The term "curve" refers to the bell curve, the graphical representation of the probability density of the normal distribution, but this method can be used to achieve any desired distribution of the grades – for example, a uniform distribution. One method of...
I experienced this~

Seems like it'd encourage bad behaviors and be unrepresentative

@Somewhat Do you know why your teachers applied it?

9:02 AM
That would completly destroy the significance of grading for me if i were to see it from the perspective of an employer.
How do I know someone was actually good at the subject and not just not as bad as their class mates?

@Tinkeringbell Unfortunately no, because AFAIK this was applied on university-level, not teacher-level

@Somewhat Ah... Okay. The link seems to be suggesting there's not much benefit to be had from curved grading :/

The most blatant point is that it highly disincentivized collaborative learning
It is in your best interest that all your classmates perform as badly as possible

In the end... I dunno if my employer looked at my individual grade or not :S
And I learnt that "grade is not everything"...
But regarding grades, perhaps there's a different perspective between... (sorry), Asians and Westerners/Europeans?
Because...
...

@Somewhat Well, I know some numerus clausus studies over here select based on grades, and I got a higher candidate score for the training to become a software engineer based on my university grades too
@Somewhat I don't know. It seems to me that there must be a reason, but I think USA does curved grades a lot as well (and those are westerners, I think? :P)

@Somewhat Kiasu is very singaporean

9:51 AM
Hello!

Hello too!

I'm new on the meta chat and I'm a bit lost. :) Where can I go to ask for help? I have a question to ask but I'm not sure which site use.
Is there a chatroom for questions like this? :)

Hi! So, what's the question about?
(I think this chatroom is just fine for such questions ;) )

This is a general chat room for Meta SE, you're free to ask for help regarding the site

Oh, thank you @Tinkeringbell . :) My question is about online games like Ogame : about how data are represented and updated in DB.
Thanks @Somewhat! :)
I was considering using Stack Overflow but since it's not about a particular problem but a kinda generic question I was wondering if it wouldn't be more in a site like Computer Science.

10:06 AM
Hmm.. I don't hang around much on those sites, so I don't really know which one that'd fit on. Sorry!
Hopefully someone else in here will know :)

No problem. Thanks anyway! :)

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword with email in answer: Where do I find the fruit tamarind? by Emmanuel on cooking.SE

@vmonteco There's tag on Meta SE, but reading from the short description of your question, I'm not sure if it's factually answerable unless by their developer themselves. Meanwhile, there's also Game Development for game development related.

@Somewhat That may indeed be more relevant! Thank you for this answer. :)

user194636
@vmonteco Be sure to read their help pages before asking, and in particular read gamedev.meta.stackexchange.com/q/626 to make sure the question is presented the right way.

10:21 AM
@vmonteco some stuff's a little tricky to get into an in scope question

10:50 AM
@PaulWhite I'm used to asking on StackOverflow. Are the usages in other sites really different? I've read the gamedev post you shared and I think my question would be fine there. :)
@JourneymanGeek I'm sorry, I didn't understand what you're meaning. :S

@vmonteco in a sense there's two things you need to work aroud
Its either a very broad question with many approaches (as a general one) or one very few people can answer (how does this game store this data in a DB)

user194636
@vmonteco Yep some sites have very strict rules, others not so much. Always worth checking their help, and often their metas as well, unless the question is very obviously on-topic. Especially for a first question 🙂

as well as the sites themselves ;)

Actually, a new search highlighted a post that already seems to answer my question : gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/141103/… and it even kinda is the answer I was thinking about. :)

@Somewhat Yes. But the origin of this need to clarify rules (which is good: it doesn't hurt to clarify rules) has been some controversial action from a mod, and that hasn't really been sorted out. Now it seems they're fighting each other, and it certainly isn't good.
