Hi

user287113
Can someone responsible for these chats just change the color of the text when you edit it? It's kinda white when you edit and I have to make an effort to understand what I'm editing. This is very annoying!

@nbro I think you're using Grammarly (or other browser extension), consider disable/blacklist the SE chat domain

Q: Zero visibility while editing a message in a chat room

Muhammad Omer AslamI was having a conversation on one of the questions with a member of stackoverflow.com and I came across to edit my message and after clicking on edit I was presented with this. You can see that the text inside the message box isn't visible at all and it's really hard to edit a message. It wo...

@Somewhat room culture can be a force for good if positive
I don't think it should be an excuse for bad behavior but I don't think I can ignore it in the longer process of engaging with other users and to be frank, trying to socially engineer a better community by my own standards

12:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek I can't disagree with this... I should have said "some room culture [...] on some chat rooms"

TBH that is something I am trying to do here - have people openly and safely let us know if something makes them uncomfortable.
@Somewhat oh parts of this are stuff we talk about a lot.
I feel understanding that room culture exists and shaping it is essential
Some folks feel it shouldn't be a thing

1:13 AM
@PaulWhite She is.

user287113
This is a comment to be edited. Yeah, so the problem was Grammarly.

3:09 AM
Oops :)
Someone make it so plz

3:28 AM
I just love this comment
Point out sound is a form of radiation, immediately freak out that there is music playing in the office. — djsmiley2k 9 hours ago
and I believe there should be a question related to that matter on [radiation] on Skeptics ...

3:48 AM
anyone

??
leaving my question
Yesterday, mom told me the cats are trying to catch something. When I checked, it was a baby great coucal. It's not too young or new born but still it's a baby and it can't fly.
I tried to catch it, and it ran for nearly 20 minutes and finally I managed to caught it. I put it in a box and covered the top with a net. It's mother is crying for it's baby but I can't leave this one because there are nearly 50 cats around here. I gave it water and it drunk it. I tried giving multiple things to eat, dosa, rise, fruits, etc but it doesn't eat anything
Anyone know what should I feed it?

If it was singapore, I'd call ACRES

have to find something. It can't even drink water itself. I've to gave it slowly and steadily o_O
@JourneymanGeek there's no such thing here. Adding, it's a common bird here like crow
[topic change] Dear Windows 7 users, it's time to cry ;p
> [T]oday we are announcing that we will offer paid Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU) through January 2023. The Windows 7 ESU will be sold on a per-device basis and the price will increase each year,” explained Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for Office and Windows Marketing, and author of the company’s blog post
> Obviously, Microsoft’s stance may change but, until it does, Windows 7 consumers will have to upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 8 (support lasts until January 10th, 2023).
> If you do now want to upgrade, you’ll run into two pain points: Windows 8 is no longer officially for sale and Windows 10 is no longer a free upgrade, with prices for the latter starting at $139 for an online download
> Consequently, while Windows 7 users have long been able to laugh at the ongoing problems of Windows 10 users, it now appears it will be those users who upgraded for free who will get the last laugh…

4:44 AM
@OptimusPrime can't you put it somewhere high or far enough the cats won't reach it and let the mother feed it?

4:59 AM
@OptimusPrime makes a ton of sense
@OptimusPrime acres would handle that too :)

5:53 AM
@PaulWhite as a policy. Not sure about the definite. And I agree that avoiding chat moderation increases the chances of drama while over moderation make a room a bit boring. I make choices. I can't cater for everyone so now and then someone will be unhappy. Being vocal about it helps and I'll try to remember.

@PaulWhite We're in a sense still working out the more formal policies.
I'd like to get this place over to roughly the same baselines as root access - that folks can be expected to mostly act like adults, we can talk about and have positive responses to concerns from users.
Lets say someone posts a picture of, say spiders.
Someone here has arachonphobia
If they're unhappy or unwilling to stay in the room cause someone keeps posting photos of spiders
We have a problem
If someone gets annoyed every time someone posts a dog or cat... well, we have a different problem
Hard part is when someone has a cripping fear of dogs, but we can deal with that if that is really the case

7:32 AM
That might mean that Ash would disappear...
So let's hope that doesn't happen :D

7:49 AM
Download Moar Ram!

8:02 AM
Picked up a google cardboard type thing
I need to rig up a "better" magnetic switch and tune it a bit bit seems fun

8:32 AM
Someone clearly cheaped out on their spammers

8:46 AM
@JohnDvorak Don't worrry, people probably call me worse when I'm not looking :D
Also, I'm sorry for not realizing you were serious and starring that message. By the time I did realize, it was too late, so if someone else wants to do the honors that's okay with me.

8:58 AM
ehh I'm still super confused over the fuss ._.

2 hours later…
11:05 AM
@πάνταῥεῖ code review : Ain't no compiler on this round earth that would compile that. Also your code style is terrible. ;)

@Mithrandir Ash has cured about 2 people of that ._.
"Oh, I'm afraid of dogs."
He's asleep on her lap 2 hours later ._.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work for allergies.

True, but I don't think you can be allergic to dogs or cats over the internet.
(was talking actual fear. If you're visiting and have a dog alergy... erm
wrong household? Ash kinda has the run of most of the house, other than the kitchen
He won't go into the kitchen

stations mother in kitchen, plays with dog

11:18 AM
We're not actually sure why

Do you have a different floor in the kitchen?

nope
also
any kitchen

O_o
Personally I like dogs, but my mother is deathly allergic and my father has a dog phobia. :/

._.
I'm trying to plan my leave. If I take annual leave, I have one month of work off. And I haven't touched my off days yet.

11:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek That's pretty normal? A month/4 weeks of leave during the summer :)

@Tinkeringbell I "only" have 14 days ;p
which stretches to a month

and I need to plan for jan/feb while leaving a few days for ... yanno

Better :)

cause yanno, 12 hour days 3-4 day weeks
I want to leave 3-4 days spare in case my parents actually manage to get their rears in gear and find me a mrs geek

11:36 AM
Oh... I have 25 days a year. Next year I'll be at the company for 3 years, and get an additional 3 too. So that means 4 weeks of summer and about a week around christmas :)

or a high enough possibility mrs geek for me to go meet.

@Tinkeringbell we're fortunate in the World with the number of vacation days we get.

I have 14 + 11

@JourneymanGeek Makes 25.
:P

14 days leave 11 days off in lieu for holidays
@Tinkeringbell we don't get public holidays off though

11:37 AM
@rene Hmm.. are we really? I thought it was pretty common at least across more european countries

maaan
If I had a month off...
.... actually
I should go to india if nothing happens ;p
have a break, hang out with the big doggos

@JourneymanGeek Hmm... We get Christmas, New years day, Easter, Ascension day, Pentecost Koningsdag, I think we sometimes get the 5th of May too...
Lots of long weekends :)
@JourneymanGeek Sounds like a nice plan :)

2 holidays per main religion makes 8, national day,labour day and... one more?
@Tinkeringbell I've had a few... annoyed, slightly provocative talks with mom
she's a bit hurt but ehhh
I do think telling her "if you guys don't want to make an effort, just stop, and I'm fine with dying alone" was a BIT melodramatic

I think that's true, but if it helps, it helps :)

Yup
She's spent the entire week going to religious talks so...
ya ;p
I think some recaliberation of expectations is useful

11:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek Actually, you can - if your allergy is severe enough, hearing a recorded bark or meow, or seeing a picture, can trigger an allergic reaction. It's slightly crazy, but we discovered this through it happening

@Mithrandir ow
@Mithrandir warn me if your mom is ever on chat and I won't post ash pictures oneboxed.
Serious.

Heh. I doubt it'll ever happen, but I will :)
vanishes again, Violet style

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard nopes. cats can simply reach roof top. only tree in our backyard is champakka but cats can climb on it

But ya. If there's actual wolves, its fine to cry wolf

11:50 AM
@Tinkeringbell Hmm, I thought so, yes. Maybe ask on skeptics.se ;)

@πάνταῥεῖ ok HIDE THE DOG PICTURES!
Though, I am doubtful @Mithrandir is secretly Danzig.
It would be a bit of a surprise from what I know.

@JourneymanGeek ?

@rene Hmmm. Skeptics is a hard site :P I don't think your chat message counts as 'credible source', sorry!

@OptimusPrime a increasing scale of cost for obsolete OSes?
@Tinkeringbell agreed lol
My first post was an epic failure, only saved by kind editors
and I'm not sure how much of that is "hey, we know that dog!"

If there's an actual fox... cry fox instead?

11:54 AM
Yup

@Tinkeringbell I know I'm incredible ...
2

@rene That word! It does not mean what you think it means!

@JourneymanGeek I'm either a teenage girl with the ability to disappear and create force fields, or a 2,000 year old Maia who died and came back to life

@rene You set me up, didn't you? Well played!

@Mithrandir or something in between

11:57 AM
Yep. ;)

a 2000 year old teenage girl? D:

@Tinkeringbell I might have, yes ... Thanks for playing along ... ;)

@Somewhat for certain values of teenage....
1800 is a teen

@rene devious flower

@πάνταῥεῖ I'd rather people not call dupe-hammer closures chaos emeralds
I do think its a better use of summoning a gold-badge dupehammer holder than asking for a dupe closure tho

See my comment

cough
I am doubtful of that

that... won't work on smaller sites :(

@JourneymanGeek I believe we can remove the comments now.

(no gold badger, no mod chat room...)
I was tempted to mod flag instead, but that doesn't seem... correct :(

2:33 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ danke.
@Somewhat well, true
or meta
oh oh
Seems a bit like a sledgehammer
@Somewhat on a smaller site though, less volume

@Journey I honestly didn't realize that the tag was kinda non conformed tag.

"dupe hammer" is itself enough of an obscure term - only folks intimate with SE would know what it's referring to - that being more obscure is really unnecessary.

user310756
@Somewhat not any more. The majority of the abusive behaviour by regulars has really been checked. A few outliers who will slip up.

@Mithrandir though the expectation is that folks with a gold badge would be familiar with the network
And it's better than a Sonic reference

2:41 PM
Yep. I know what a dupe hammer is, but I know nothing about "chaos emeralds".

Ahhhhhh
Yup

Me neither... never play Sonic before nor following it

A Sonic hedgehog is something to do with genetics.

Lol
Anyway thanks @πάνταῥεῖ for the edit

(except enjoying "Sonic 2006" meme...)

2:43 PM
Sonic hedgehog is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SHH ("sonic hedgehog") gene. Both the gene and the protein may also be found notated alternatively as "Shh". Sonic hedgehog is one of three proteins in the mammalian signaling pathway family called hedgehog, the others being desert hedgehog (DHH) and Indian hedgehog (IHH). SHH is the best studied ligand of the hedgehog signaling pathway. It plays a key role in regulating vertebrate organogenesis, such as in the growth of digits on limbs and organization of the brain. Sonic hedgehog is the best established example of a morphogen as defined...

And bedtime. I got my night shift swapped for morning yay

@Mithrandir @_@

(kudos to acapella science for teaching me that)
To switch to a different topic... what do y'all think of this short animated film?

saw the thumbnail, expected to cry
(now watching...)

(this one's also good: youtube.com/watch?v=c0yxXmE6w_4)

2:57 PM
I've left a comment here and edited my answer. Is it (still?) unclear what I explain?

@rene I guess the first one is asking about permalink instead
as you have clarified in the comment, the URL with query instead of edit

Happy New Year!

@Somewhat Thanks

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Happy New Year!
honey for food?

3:03 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה ! or maybe יוֹם תְּרוּעָה
please share your personal reflections so we can judge if they are correct....

personal reflection... how many times I have been unwelcoming on SE this year...
looks like the answer will come next year!
@Mithrandir I dunno why.... reminds me of Ori and the Blind Forest for unknown reason

@rene "New Year!" to you, too ;)
They're both accurate names for the day(s), but the first is more colloquial; the second is more of an esoteric name.

there'll be another New Year 2 days later...

3:22 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Shana tova u'metukah

was reading the Q&A of a jug on Amazon

@Shadow ראש השנה

2 hours later…
5:50 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ yeah I know! :)
@Mithrandir full with gefilte fish! 🐟

And me too now :)

1 hour later…
7:07 PM
@Somewhat actually yes, on an apple!
@rene reflections about what? Anyway, the first term you poster is correct, יום תרועה isn't really related... ;)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard the wiki page said that y'all go about with personal reflections. I propose you stick to what wikipedia instructs you to do with your New Year.

@rene I think it is more for Yom Kippur where we fast for 24 hours and indeed should reflect about our sins... In Rosh Ha Shana we just celebrate. :-D

7:46 PM
This sentence got me thinking, "who is Yom Kippur?"

user271002
Forgot about 1973?

Never learned about the event I believe you refer to

8:14 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Okay, let's celebrate \o/

9:01 PM
@Loong hehe well... Yom Kippur exists hundreds of years before 1973 war. :)
Must admit, starting a war in that day is smart move, strategically.

2 hours later…
10:38 PM
@Loong I am no historian but the war was named for the holiday

11:09 PM
How did that ... get a +1?

11:25 PM
@JohnDvorak The other creationist on this site upvoting???
>:-) ;-) >:-)

Oh, should I upvote too?

@JohnDvorak :D :D :D

If by +1 you mean -1 sure

I can't see up/downvotes ther (yet)
