@πάνταῥεῖ American thing - it looks like something called a hand turkey

1:51 AM
Morning!

2:22 AM
Morning!
ugh, home renovation at my rental house .-.

2 hours later…
4:15 AM
Ugh

4:44 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Still figuring out the financial thing, but no.
@Tinkeringbell CS and Biochem.

Bio... that's... a bit unexpected :O

5:22 AM
morning

> it's a beautiful day outside.
> birds are singing, flowers are blooming...

2 hours later…
7:37 AM
@Somewhat well, considering that these days a lot of chemistry is computational to start with
and you can simulate what stuff does....
might be a neat pairing

1 hour later…
8:57 AM
I just tried to upvote a comment of Shog9 again.

... you can upvote comments right?

Yes, I probably did months ago

ohhh
Again as in for the second time for the same comment

yep

I misunderstood ;p

9:03 AM
I'm on one coffee at the moment. I might be less clear

9:23 AM
Pro-tip: for maximum effect, rather than sitting on your cup of coffee, drink it.

He's a flower...
So... I disagree

Ah, true

I drink this one. Thanks for the tip.

Also coffee grounds make great fertilizer
Also apparently mushrooms grow well in it

user271002
Our earthworms love it.

9:27 AM
sticks @rene in a pile of coffee

0_o

One of my coworker always calls dibs on used coffee grounds for his garden
Not sure what he actually does with it but he uses it as some sort of fertilizer

Ya more or less just that
Apparently someone in Italy sticks it in used tetrapaks and grow mushrooms
I should mug a friendly Italian and get a translation if I can find the time

My office generates a metric ton of coffee grounds
Literally out of 5 people in it, 7 in processing, 2 in marketing, 4 in purchasing, 9 in sales and 4 bosses I'm the only one who doesn't at least consume 3 cups of coffee a day

9:41 AM
I know each of the labs sometimes go through 4 whole cans of coffee a day

Hopefully proper coffee?

few of them have specific preferences

I don't know how to judge coffee though as I have never liked it

I have not drunk instant except under duress in ages
I am not a fan of pods cause waste

9:43 AM
The only coffee I can drink basically is iced coffee from the store in a can
But that is more sugar and milk then actual coffee

Here in switzerland we actually have special nespresso recycling bins :D

And there are better ways to get your caffeine on if that's what's required.
Like caffeine tablets

You can get them in 100mg increments so if you really need caffeine to stay awake (should be rare unless your schedule is shot by night shift or something similar) you can use them

Well it needs to taste like coffee and i do not like it too bitter
@Magisch Indian coffee is with milk and sugar

9:45 AM
@Bart Only for Nespresso? Other brands disallowed? Posh Swiss ...

Pod coffee for pod people

One thing I find odd is that

@rene haha, other ones are allowed I guess, as long as they're aluminium.

my local grocery store sells like 4-5x more cola without caffeine then with
Somehow cola without caffeine has become super popular here

9:46 AM
Where do you put your mug on that Nespresso machine?

@Magisch I cut down cause caffeine kinda gave me jitters
Also didn't help with anxiety

I don't use much caffeine to begin with besides what is in my tea

I have cola once in a blue moon. One coffee a day

I found interfering with my natural sleep cycle is seriously detrimental to my health
I don't do all nighters like I used to anymore for instance

Alas I need to do it for my current job

9:48 AM
This is the ultimate boring adult realization. Staying up late is not worth destroying your circadian rhythm for 2 days straight
16 year old me would scoff right now
I feel for friends of mine who have irregularly changing shifts

Yup
Heh
Ash fixed up my sleep cycles
As a pup he was a firm believer in if I go to sleep everyone must go to sleep
Whoot we did most of a normal, short walk
Annnnd normal route again after 2 weeks

1 hour later…
11:15 AM
It's been a while I've gone outside on weekend :O

Oh I walk Ash whenever I am free to
My dad lacks patience anyway

My dad loves dog, but he doesn't want to walk his dog, and now it might be too late to walk him (so aggressive 😣)
And again, the neighborhood...
Anyway, actually I want to share this... "Heart breakening (?)" MSO post

Q: When is a comment hostile or unfriendly? (Educating newer users how to flag comments)

Yvette ColombTL; DR Basically there's an increase of people flagging comments as unkind when there's nothing wrong with them. A comment saying your question is a duplicate is not rude. So please stop it. Background I've mentioned something similar before on Meta Comments asking for clarification or an MC...

Almost to the point that I wanted to say "see, the regulars are not the problem" (but that might be rude...)
Or alternative theory, some outside groups are trolling SO since the welcoming initiative

@Somewhat You need some rep to flag

11:24 AM
OP can flag on their post though

True
Well, that's new, and I figure its an experiment
And if someone's actively working on trolling SO, well
We don't have the full visibility of what's going on as mods, we need CM help.

Worst case: 4chan

(also I might want to have a word with Yvette about her mispelling shog's name)
meh, there's probably worse places

Onion and dark web...

ugh ;p

11:28 AM
Russian hackers...

I was thinking more prosaic things
At best, folks on network who disagree.
At worst, folks who basically don't agree with the folks who've a few folks feel triggered this
The former, well, we can listen to, and talk to, and win over and work with

True...

I mean, as a mod, while there's few "secret" channels - that's one major reason I'm on meta
Folks tell me things. I listen, and try to let the folks who run the network know.
In a sense that's what Yvette is doing (and many of her meta posts do, more so than mine I might add)
We get some of those comments votes that are bogus
but we don't have their volume
I don't think nor do I hope that there's organised rings of folks flagging stuff to give mods headaches or to "prove a point"
If there is, man, I hope there's popcorn when its found out, cause it will be a fine case of folks shooting themselves in the foot, and I want them gone - since they clearly care more about this than the site or the community :(

12:02 PM
I left a comment on that post.
You can flag it now ...

"excessively flowery language"

@JourneymanGeek Gosh9?

shod
But looks like she noticed soooo lol

Shod Shad
I did not read it yet but...
Increase of unjustified flags is 1000000% expected with the change of focus SE is going through.

why did I get banned for 10 years? You misspelled my name ....

12:15 PM
@Somewhat wonder if that'll have any effect
not like people who serially misflag things even know about meta or the flag summary

They almost plead new users to flag anything they don't like.

@rene The email inviting me to mod IPS called me Tinkerbell :(

Lol
You flagged the email?

Seems like Ask Patents allows tag creation with only 1 rep, and that's not in our FAQ.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I passive agressively corrected it :P

12:17 PM
[status-bydesign]?

Kind regards, tinkerINGbell

Tin Caring Bell

Not gonna happen :P
Gotta go, the boys are done trying out new clothes

12:30 PM
@Tinkeringbell Better then "Bell who tinkers"!

@Tinkeringbell are you sitting bored with a pile of bags outside? ;p
*were
(I don't actually know anyone who does that. My family tends to shop insanely efficiently)

I shop rarely outside of groceries because I intensely dislike that it breaks my routine
But if I do, I make a full plan beforehand and walk out in the smallest amount of time with what I want to buy

12:48 PM
@Tinkeringbell well, what can I say. I did make that connection as well, so ... ;)
sorry ...

@Magisch I go with my mom. We tend to get a lot of groceries every 2 weeks or so and...
and the place we get it from is a chaotic mess so... the efficiency means we are not going across the whole building again ;)

1:13 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yep. I don't like sport stores
@rene it's supposed to be made. But it's not my nickname ;)
They had to wait while I was raising a LUSH though, so we're even

1:29 PM
Raising or raiding?

Oh...raiding :)
Sorry. I'm still sleepy...

1 hour later…
2:40 PM
@Tinkeringbell as long as it isn't razing a LUSH
@ɪʙᴜɢ ⛳

@JourneymanGeek Thanks. And the one above?

The Skeptics ones? Already flagged
Alas I think using aibobot for that might be frowned upon

@ɪʙᴜɢ Is gone but there are two more there on the same profile.
One looks like it's reported in here, the other not?
@JourneymanGeek why not? Glitters everywhere!

2:57 PM
@Tinkeringbell its messy
Bathbombs everywhere. The burning remains of of a sponge over yonder. Cloven bottles of shampoo lying like dead fish after a red tide...

@JourneymanGeek yeah, but with glitter. It might actually look and smell great

Glitter. Glitter never changes
or is removed
you will find it years later
It is the nasty communicable disease of the craft supply world

I feel like that description should have never been posted

@JohnDvorak the one with bath bombs?

yes

3:00 PM
Why?

too graphic

I'm confused - who would get upset by that? 0_0

I feel it deserves a star just for that :)

and why?
I actually picked the fish cause it seemed the least upsetting thing I could use

Well... at least I didn't get suspended for an hour :P

3:10 PM
@JohnDvorak Why would you get suspended, just for pulling someone's leg? :P

@JohnDvorak ... airight. Let me put it very bluntly.
We don't just go around handing suspensions willy nilly
You're almost certainly going to have folks trying very hard to let you know somethings not right

sorry

While I'm relatively new as a RO here, I've ROed a chatroom on this network for 5 years, only stopping cause I was a mod ;)
(on the other hand, if you somehow had your pet fish die to an algal bloom, and are suffering from trauma from it... I really would apologise, throw that post into the bin, and feel like a very very bad person)
And right, on that slightly dour note, good night folks!

no, no history of pet deaths. It is, though, discouraging to see that mentioning you don't like something makes you see it for much longer.

@Journeyman Is there a local policy here for when stars should be removed? On my own site's main chat room, stars are often removed when the message is considered to project a negative view of the room to newcomers. Also, when there is serious objection to a message. Of course, such messages are often simply trashed or deleted as well, which serves the purpose.

@JourneymanGeek Sleep well :)
@PaulWhite I think TAS only removes them when they 'don't add anything to the sidebar'... e.g. stars made during discussions that got out of hand, stars made on messages calling people out
Everything else is sort of free bait
I think the programming/codegolf room may have some rules. I got the impression when I cleaned up some star spam there last time.

user194636
Oh I missed the "good night" message.

Random thought of the day: would it benefit the site quality if -1s from downvotes didn't show up in the achievement list?

Ehhh... no? because downvotes are what's supposed to tell people they made something crappy?
Wait... achievement list? What list?

Your rep tally

3:32 PM
I think it's important that downvotes are there :)

user194636
@JohnDvorak I think it works that way on Teams

If there really was an 'achievement' for getting downvoted, I'd say that that may have been wrong

I'd say that hiding the rep effect of downvoting would encourage more downvotes = good

Hmmm. it might just confuse people
(I just realised you talked about downvotes given, not received)

On the same note, I don't think the assoc bonus belongs there either.

user194636
3:38 PM
Oh! The achievements trophy thing in the top bar. Yeah hiding the -1s might be good.

I still think that'd be confusing. You get or lose reputation, but not a notification with an explanation.

This already happens with deleted users
or deleted posts

Huh? I still get (-10, user removed) or whatever from time to time, and it does show up in the reputation tab

@Tinkeringbell kind of... there is a badge for deleting a -3 scored post.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Oh that one... I even have one of those.

3:42 PM
Many users have but unlike other badges, not many try to get it on purpose... :)

I once tried to orchestrate the +3 deletion one and instead got the -3 deletion one
Apparently people don't like "plz upvote, I'll delete anyways"

Hahaha You really tried it like that?

Not quite. I had a +2 before I got realized it's incorrect. One guy promised an upvote once I undelete, but then didn't follow through. I decided to install a warning on the answer saying it's wrong in the meantime, at which point people realized the answer is, in fact, wrong.

That's actually quite nasty, promising an upvote and not giving it.

He said he got caught by a phone call

3:51 PM
Oh yeah... back in those days you could probably still get tangled in the wire...

user194636
It kinda makes sense for new users contributors, since it isn't at all obvious that downvoting a post costs you 1 rep. That said, once you know about that cost, the repeated -1s are just noise (and possibly discouraging).

Hey, I still have a phone with a wired base

Oh, we have one too. As a kids toy :P

I still think it's the best garrotte ever. (Does that make me a hypocrite for disliking bathbombs?)

@JohnDvorak Ehh... I've never tried to kill with a bathbomb before, so I assume telephone cords make better garrottes yes :P

@Tinkeringbell you have kids?? ;)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard No. I babysit sometimes. I'm not planning on ever trying to raise one properly

8:13 PM
@PaulWhite we're very conservative to clear stars.

3 hours later…
11:03 PM
Fell asleep too quick, woke up to quick...

Okay, I'm going to take over sleeping then ... cya

cya :)

user194636
11:31 PM
@Mithrandir Yeah I guess.

user194636
@rene As a definite policy? The context, in case you missed it was chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/7220918#7220918

user194636
FWIW and IMO: Avoiding chat moderation actions at the very lower end of the scale tends to increase the chances of future real drama.

looks like a light-hearted joke to me...
and a poetic one

user194636
Sure. And it'd still be a light-hearted joke if unstarred.

user194636
Anyway, it's just a discussion point.

11:36 PM
I guess it should refer back to room culture?

Unstarring would be welcome, yes

user194636
I kinda assumed at the time, Tink would have unstarred but the time window for that expired.

He only starred as a reaction to learning it wouldn't be appreciated

user194636
(I'm pretty sure Tinkeringbell is female just btw).

user194636
Whenever I see "room culture" mentioned I'm always reminded of discussions like:

user194636
11:39 PM
I don't know if this should be an answer, but one problem I see (and I know others see it, too) is the idea of "room culture". Some groups of users feel like they function well together and have agreed-upon standards established independently. This is defended as "room culture", and it can be a problem, like when new folks walk in and see (in some cases) things like profanity. When moderation goes against this "culture", they get equally up in arms - especially when the moderator isn't from the room's home site. That attitude is one big problem I see, and it's inherent in the system. — HDE 226868 Dec 10 '15 at 1:04

It's a gender-agnostic "he" :P

user194636
Ha ha fair enough, wasn't sure if you knew or not.

I didn't

user194636
Of course I might be wrong, and that would be really embarrassing for me.

user194636
It's so hard to avoid he/she in casual chat. I do try to say "they" or "the user" when I think about it, but that upsets some people too, and it feels a bit "try-hard" as well.

11:41 PM
Of course if you are, they can ensure that your mistake stays visible for posterity :P

user194636
No doubt it will get 50 x ⭐

@PaulWhite well, "room culture" is the reason why I don't join other chat rooms, yes...
aside of "not interested in the topic"

user194636
Hopefully that will become less of an issue over time.

Like, Anime.SE's main chat room image board (link to the room info instead due to the possibility of potential NSFW images)

user194636
That's certainly caused some discussion.
