@TravisJ cause they haven't made scotch that long? ;p
@Undo hah, I could have told you that.

Morning,

@canon might also make sense to ignore them if said by an ignored user
@Fabby ideally... practically that would keep many many managers awake at night

@JourneymanGeek Missed two

oops
Doing it manually so... eh

I wonder if Bert's doing the chimney sweeps again
Maybe he's out making chalk drawings on the pavement

3:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek I understand you didn't really like what I said, but was a 30-minute ban necessary?
A kick would have sufficed.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Yes.

@JourneymanGeek Why specifically 30 minutes?

shrug it was automatic.

@JourneymanGeek Not per se. You flagged my message, fully knowing that as you have mod powers your flag would be immediately declared valid and I would be immediately suspended for 30 minutes.

3:18 AM
So don't say that it's automatic.

Shrug You're right. I should have made it longer.

@JourneymanGeek Look, I'm sorry if you didn't like what I said.
My point was, you have a point, it's better that he takes that point and doesn't keep arguing about it.

It wasn't helping. This isn't helping either.

3:43 AM
@Catija Need a Meta mod to unfreeze this room.

@JourneymanGeek, After my experience yesterday, and the subsequent reading of the what goes on here. I find your patience aspirational. Many of us are somewhat aspy. Some more than others. But here you sit, with considerably more patience than I managed to gather in my short encounter, dealing with the facts on the ground. I aspire to be more like you. Thank for the leadership by example.

gee thanks

7:04 AM
No doubt @Journeyman is the most patient person I know around here.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog but it was actual user which got suspended. In @UniKitty case, a bot account got the big hit, leaving the accounts of its creators (there was another one, Niko something) untouched.
(Nikko disappeared long before UniKitty)
eh, "only" 10 years, for some reason remembered it as more.
1 1

lol
10 years is the standard "dude, beat it" suspension

yeah, but... a bot, meant for chat. I never saw the bot doing anything unusual. So it really nags me to at least get some hint what happened.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard oooh.
Not sure about that

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog To continue with the unsolicited pinging advice from yesterday...
The way this is phrased, it reads like a demand, not a request. That's not something that very many people take well to, especially when it's not just a single instance, but part of a larger pattern. Phrasing things in a less.... "entitled" way would be a good idea.

For example

7:13 AM
morning

Agree. "@[name here], can you please unfreeze this old room that I created in the past so I can have a room again? Thanks!" is much better.

"Hi! When you're free could you please unfreeze sonic's den ? I would like to use it again"

But unless @Catija herself directly says she does not want pings from Sonic, or me, or any pings at all, I don't really mind Sonic pinging her. IMO, each person should be able to say "I'm fine with other people pinging me".
But that specific message lacked both some basic courtesy and reasoning.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard heh, I really wish I didn't have to go "Hey, please stop pinging unless these conditions are met"
I mean in this specific case, I totally can get its needed.
The specific stuff we've asked him not to ping about and the general... well... need to is literally cause if we go "let each person say whether they want to opt out from pinging" well...
Its not worked well

@bjb568 where are you these days?

7:21 AM
I mean "Trust me" is the worst reasoning to let folks set rules but... Trust me on this.

@JourneymanGeek I mentioned "opt in", e.g. if specific SE staff says they're fine with pings then let it be, but otherwise (pinging non opted-in staff) you're right and rules against it might be fine in the long range.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard ah, I can live with that

Though better not have "9 rules of pinging" for each staff member, it will become way too complicated to remember or enforce. :/

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard well, what @Magisch and I suggested are pretty common sense.
And should probably help mitigate a lot of the issue we've been having.

Just "yes, I'm fine with pings from (optional list)" or "no, please do not ping me about non-urgent things" should suffice.

7:25 AM
"explicitly requested"
I have you covered ;)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard as are ongoing conversations, cause I KNOW you hate it when I don't use replies

only when it becomes out of context due to having other messages posted before...
e.g.
Good, I can live with that too.
What message I refer to? ^
:)

With the pinging of staff covered let's move to the next topic that needs our rules ...

At what hours are we allowed to eat ice cream?

7:34 AM
WUT? Are we going to limit THAT!!! No way....

user351483
Catija can tell us. Let's ask her....

not allowed to ping unless she opts in. ;)

There's pretty much no way to get rooms unfrozen other than to ping a moderator in chat. In fact, users regularly ping mods in The Assembly to get rooms on Chat.SE unfrozen.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard you're an adult.
Whenever you want.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Right... that's why I didn't say that it was a problem that you asked; the problem was the way you asked.

7:38 AM
@Mithrandir The general rule, as pointed out on Meta, is to unfreeze rooms upon request unless the requests become frivolous (e.g. keep unfreezing but no messages, etc.)

That's completely irrelevant to the point I was making.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I think he was trying to say "ask a little more politely please!"

I wanted to make it a little more clear that it was a legitimate reason for pinging a staff member, not just a "random" ping. It's possible that she might not bother to read the message and just think it's a frivolous ping, unless there's something eye-catching in it (e.g. "needs a Meta mod").

Still with the pinging?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog rule? I don't think so. Unfreezing a room, as I see it, is 100% a "bonus", something the mod doesn't have to do, but rather doing out of 100% good will. So asking nicely should be basic.
If someone wants to keep their room warm and not frozen, they should bother to post once in 14 days. It's really not hard.

7:48 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog And I'm trying to say that that's beside the point.

tbh, on main I toooootttallllllyyyy would unfreeze a room asked nicely

Telling a mod "you should do [something here]" is not nice.

this isn't main, lol.

@JourneymanGeek no doubt
Now plz go get a diamond here already! @Journeyman :P

@TravisJ for the next 6 to 8 weeks, yes

7:49 AM
Weeks? You're optimistic.... :D

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard XD, people keep telling me that lol

Travis J has changed the room topic to Pings on the Meta

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Give me a way by which I can be nice, yet still clearly express in the first few words that the matter requires a Meta mod, so that if she doesn't bother to read past the first few words she doesn't assume it's a frivolous ping.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog We've given a few examples

@rene I see your ping
@rene and raise you 1

Agree. "@[name here], can you please unfreeze this old room that I created in the past so I can have a room again? Thanks!" is much better.

@TravisJ ALL IN!

"when you're free could you please"... oh, great, another random ping

And if she "assume it's a frivolous ping", well, that's too bad, but changing tone to something not nice to avoid it isn't proper action, IMO.

Can't you just wait until there is a mod in the room, and then politely ask them to unfreeze the room?

"need a Meta mod"... for what? let me read on
oh, unfreezing a room. Simple, done.

user351483
7:53 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Starred for ease of reference.

Words have power. The "when you're free" respects the fact that they're taking that moment to do it for you. Please is MAGIC.

@TravisJ She was there at the time I made that ping.

@Snow another star for rule! Soon we'll have Rule Wall.... :D

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard :(

@JourneymanGeek nah, you can't program with "Please". You can with Magic! :D

7:55 AM
Anyone here ever worked with PCI stuff?

@TravisJ Expansion cards?

Payment Card Industry

@JNat Can you please unfreeze this room that I created in the past so I can have a room again?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog You're linking to the tavern

@JNat This room, sorry: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/rooms/1176 (wrong room again)

8:04 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog missing a "meta" there?

@JNat Not anymore

unfrozen

Well, unfreezing the tavern would be a great idea...

@JNat Strange...still shows as "frozen" despite a message from Feeds saying that it's unfrozen

caching?

8:05 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog refresh it?

@JNat Done. Thanks!

;)

@TravisJ not really, but you reminded me to ask for PCI 6.6 Compliance Report. Thanks! :)
(generated by WAF provider, simple. ;))

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard who did you annoy? ;)

@JourneymanGeek nobody, something I was asked for... eh... week ago. And forgot. lol

8:07 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Cool, no worries :) Make sure to say hi to the Bobs for me :P

THE BOBS?

@JNat my fault, he copied and pasted example I made, and I put Tavern in that example. ;)
But you see? It's working. @Sonic :)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard No control.
In a scientific study you need a control group.

@TravisJ Alice says "Hi!"
And offended you didn't say "Alices". She's sensitive. :D

There's no evidence to say that @JNat wouldn't have handled the request if I had instead said...
4 hours ago, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
@Catija Need a Meta mod to unfreeze this room.

8:10 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard SE staff blindly follows link and clicks an available button. Tavern gets deleted

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog there's plenty of evidence people get annoyed at this.
And tbh, that's really the core problem we face.

@rene or your account get network wide nuke.... :P

That has happened multiple times already

so you're rene9?

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard meh, I'd just spend 6-8 years clawing back up to 100k so I can get another mug ;p

8:12 AM
I have been deleted by a dba as well

there's a dual 100k account user anyway
on the same site

@rene ... you seem such a nice flower.

I'm just a niche flower

@JourneymanGeek Once you complete the 6-8 program you may optionally append a 9 to your username

8:13 AM
@TravisJ lol.
I think there can only be one.

Ergo, I agree.

1 Geek to Rule Them All

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard actually I literally sat down the day I created a SU account typed in "geek", went "that's too common" and went "The ---- geek" and then figured I liked the sound of "Journeyman"
oops
wrong PC

^^^^ what plastic dog said ;p

@Bartbot rofl!!
:P

user351483
8:24 AM

Eugh, hard to read that text :/

@Snow he resembles that remark

I read it. It says "Suck pup ET!!"
Doesn't make much sense though. Maybe you should choose a different meme.

or better choices of colour

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard considering the last message here, I'd assume he's busy with school,,,

8:29 AM
@Somewhat the one with math request? Yeah...
auto run meta.stackexchange.com/questions/315124/… @rene @Bart (the one who can delete) @JourneymanGeek @TravisJ

rawr

oh
That was fast lol

:) got that uber micro

8:34 AM
@TravisJ Raw R? Isn't it cold for the poor "r" to be raw and alone? :P

would you prefer a cook-r?

Yeah, at least it's warm!

I tend to use Raw R in notepad. RStudio is so 2018.

oh look, it is JohnDvorak

8:37 AM
I think @JonEricson mentioned at some point that he's learning R, no? :)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard possibly

@JourneymanGeek yes! You have hawk eyes! :D

dog nose. ;p

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Yes, I saw that too. Somewhere?

@TravisJ probably here in Tavern, or some comment.

8:38 AM
For a second I thought the book cover was one of those meme generated covers

lol no. Actual book.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Honestly, I have no clue how much random meta I have read at SO/SE
Oh, sweet, power shut off. yay

Google Books don't onebox here, so used a picture.

Ooh, back on! Woohoo. Off! =/ The humanity
And back. I can't deal.

@TravisJ too much ;p

8:39 AM
UPS saves me so many headaches

@TravisJ once we had it for like a full hour at work. After 10 minutes I just went for shopping, got back 40 minutes later to see it's still ongoing. Power off, back on for few seconds, off again.

that would be 'fun' here.

For an hour? Geez.

Miracle any computer survived... though we lost a non-important server when it started.

I bet that is great for the A/C compressors

8:42 AM
Ishta Devz sounds like some wierd pop star name

Baba is classic spammer name.

See... another reason to like my job. When the power goes out, I can either continue working or claim I can't work without <whatever> and go shopping like @Shadow. If the power goes out at my brothers job, he gets called in to fix stuff :P

DevOps ...

@Tinkeringbell alas I would need to call my manager, and basically stay on the phone while they fixed it, then checking to see if stuff mainly worked.

8:43 AM
Zoo without power means being near animals in darkness...

If the power goes at out my current job, I get to manage dealing with whether or not to send 90 people home

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard That's not really the biggest problem ;) He works the aquaria, think of all the pumps, and filters... that start throwing errors.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard you work in a zoo?

Stuff has to be rebooted fast, and in a certain order
@JourneymanGeek My brother does ;)

@Tinkeringbell and the fish may actually need the pumps and such to live

8:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol no, @Tinker's brother

@JourneymanGeek Yep... they have live corals too, so... pretty important.

Presumably they have some backup system?

Zoo probably has something like an 50 MW generator though, or perhaps a set of 10 MW generators at least.

@Henders A few emergency things, I guess. I don't remember all the details but there was a big power outage last year, and he got called in to help restart pumps, and then take care of the fish too

8:48 AM
@Henders bikes. But you have to peddle really fast to generate enough power ...

Hopefully the wild animals cell doors aren't powered by electricity, as it means they're all free to go out when power goes off. :D

@rene Surely you can just put all of the zebras on treadmills or something..?

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Definitely not :D
Or at the very least they have a 'normal' lock and key system as well

@Henders that would be animal abuse ...

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Where's the goat?!

8:49 AM
@TravisJ on your head!

@rene Hmm, this is probably why I'm not in charge of power management at a zoo...

@rene They have some pretty active rodents... I guess those will go voluntarily use those hamster wheels?

electric eels!

@JourneymanGeek Bingo.

8:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek That's it.

lol uhm, wat?

@TravisJ goat on head. :P
Well, kind of.

downgoat.

and for those who wonder, that was Israel's Prime Minister, not so long ago. ;)

looks upgoaty to me

Ugh, I love Jurassic Park.

Dinosaurs!!!

9:48 AM
Sigh... I don't wanna be nice sometimes. A question just said "I wrote a code..." I so wanted to say "I wrote an answer! It's an invisible answer, just like your code. If you show me yours, I'll show you mine!". Being nice sucks... :P

@Amadan Hahaha. Everyone has those days. Smile at your monitor and your own joke, and help them out anyways ;)

@Tinkeringbell Yeah... I sighed, closed the window, and went to seek a place to rant. :P

I think refraining from that joke isn't so much being nicer as being a bit more professional ;)

@Amadan downvote, vote to close.... ;p
you have so many ways to deal with these things
Or as I like to say, better to set people on fire light a candle, than to curse the dark.

10:11 AM
@Amadan I like to employ the 'long sigh' too. It seems pretty effective.

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

Yep, but when I try and do an italic long sigh it never works as well :p

(that is a PRETTY terrible joke)

I can't roll my R's :(

don't say you neigh at bor's hood......
(this is a worse joke...)

10:15 AM
I don't get either o.o

@Somewhat I disagree ;p
Its bad enough that I self deleted it soooooo
also pretty funny if you knew borr's great grandson was a horse

confusedly backs away

Borr or Burr (Old Norse: 'son'; sometimes anglicized Bor, Bör or Bur) was the son of Búri, the husband of Bestla, the father of Odin, Vili and Vé, and the grandfather of Thor, Baldr, Víðarr and Váli in Norse mythology. == Attestation == Borr is mentioned in the fourth verse of the Völuspá, a poem contained in the Poetic Edda, and in the sixth chapter of the Gylfaginning, part of Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda. === Völuspá === === Gylfaginning === Borr is not mentioned again in the Prose Edda. In skaldic and eddaic poetry Odin is occasionally referred to as Borr's son but no further in...
father of odin, grandfather of loki...
who erm...
is Slepnir's mom?
(and holy carp I am surprised I remembered that)

@JourneymanGeek That's why I don't sleep! ;-)
(I really try to make myself redundant so I can move on to something else...)

Wow! The Indian Languages proposal satisfied the criteria of minimum no. of followers required. Now it want some good example questions from followers and voting.

Any chance it will lead to hindi.so?

Can I post one post on Area51 discussion to encourage for voting and posting good example questions?
@JohnDvorak .so? You mean StackOveflow?
I am talking about:
60
Indian Languages

Proposed Q&A site for the learners and experts of popular Indian Languages.

Currently in definition.

@JohnDvorak not that likely IMO

shame. It would have offloaded quite a bit of burden from main SO

naw
they'd ask on both
besides most educated indians do probably speak something at least similar to but not entirely unlike english

2:20 PM
I think only English is the appropriate language for programming. Though I have heard some talking about Sanskrit having more feature but I have not searched more on that.

Well, and my understanding is that Hindi wouldn't really encompass a huge volume of Indians, so it wouldn't be as useful as it might seem.

@Pandya Cool! The sociology and anthropology one that I'm hoping for is going slow but steady and needs 11 more followers... And about 30 questions :/

@Catija Hmm.. that was one reason I proposed Indian Languages rather than just for Hindi or even Sanskrit.

I think it makes sense, you'll just have to possibly deal with a lot of meta tags - meaning a tag to mark each language.

Like the exact same thing that isn't a meta tag on SO?

2:35 PM
It really depends on how they're used. M&TV doesn't have a "movies" or "tv" tag...

@Catija TBH more that most of us are really proud of our own languages - hindi is probably pretty close to universal outside the indian diaspora
and most indian folks you run into here are diaspora.

Btw, Hindi is the official language of India.

Today we launched the 2018 update to the Stack Overflow Salary Calculator, a tool that allows developers and employers to find typical salaries for the software industry based on experience level, location, education, and specific technologies.

The methodology we used is similar to last year, but this year we’ve added support for eight new countries and refined which technologies contribute to our salary predictions. Our salary calculator is based on the comprehensive data from the Stack Overflow Developer Survey, and the unprecedented number of responses we had this year has allowed us to build a more accurate model that applies to more developers across the world. …

@Pandya "The" or "an"? (I was under the impression English was, so there might be more than 1)
Please don't kill me for asking a dumb question!

An official language is a language given a special legal status in a particular country, state, or other jurisdiction. Typically a country's official language refers to the language used within government (judiciary, legislature, administration). Since "the means of expression of a people cannot be changed by any law", the term "official language" does not typically refer to the language used by a people or country, but by its government.About half the countries of the world have declared one or more official languages. The government of Italy officialised Italian only in 1999, and some nations...

@Catija TYFGTFM (Thank you for googling that for me)
;-)
Testing whether we can still use LMGTFY in chat:

3:40 PM
@Fabby prepare to be murdered

Putting head on chopping block ;-)

4:17 PM
@Fabby There's way more fun ways of killing people. Ask Worldbuilding ;)

:D I'm a chemist. I know of ways of killing you, you weren't even aware of...
;-)

Ooh... like?

blood poisoning, with your own blood!

That's too easy. I'm not a chemist and I could do that too

(also after the edit?)

4:19 PM
I think I can do that to :P Just keep the blood out of the body long enough for it to start 'rotting'?
and then re-inject :P

@Tinkeringbell How??? It coagulates...

@Fabby Okay, introduce a pathogen to whatever blood you've taken out.
Also, I thought blood was usually kept under certain conditions, it must be possible to contaminate it with something by altering those...

That would be biological, not chemical.

Lace the blood with cyanide

@Tinkeringbell You see? Not so easy...
:P ;-) :P

4:22 PM
Hahaha ;) But I can come up with it given some effort :P
I'd google 'creative ways of...' but I don't want to alarm my CIA guy any further ;)

:D :D :D
The correct English word is CIA handler...

Sooo... change of topic? Before anyone finds out we've been planning a murder? :P

Yeah, just like last time when someone dropped into the middle of a conversation involving the Feyenoord finger kid...
;-)

You really shouldn't do that stuff... :P
I don't care much for soccer.

I mean: Everyone in Europe knows that pic!

4:26 PM
Nope.
And I don't want to know either ;)

@Tinkeringbell Nor do I, but that pic was funny!

Oooh.. I can do funny pics :) Lemme dig

@Tinkeringbell I always want to link that one :P
@Fabby All of the above :D

4:28 PM
This is going to be my next crafting project:

@Tinkeringbell Saved!!!

As a mod, I like this one too: i.imgur.com/ZAXMbGD.png

@Tinkeringbell I want a pillow or a hanky like that...
What's your price?

@Fabby I don't sell stuff ;) I make stuff for fun, and to use myself ;)
Also, that one is so easy you could do it yourself :)

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, my mum must have stuff lying around that would allow me to do it myself.
But still: if you're making one, you might as well make two and the scond one will pay for the first one.
@Tinkeringbell the best I've done was to use imagemagik to create patters for someone else to crochet stuff...

4:35 PM
Hahaha I'll keep it in mind ;) I first have two crochet blankets to finish, a crochet turtle and a micro crochet teddy bear. I really should learn to finish a project XD

(starting from a picture, reduce colour depth to 24, reduce resolution to whatever size she wanted, increase resolution to get the printer to print it off in 1:1 size)

@Fabby I often just go with pen and paper... those that comes preprinted with squares.

That's what she used to do when I saw her doing it...
I took the 3 other pics she didn't do yet, went up to her computer and came back 45 minutes later with all three pics done.
Now I get about an hour of work once/year of doing more.

Takes out the fun... I like doing the drawing as well. It's fun, and a nice way to relax

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I am! We have a regular meeting with Julia to play around with our data (an internal version of SEDE). She's great and I learn new things all the time. I even asked an SO question about R:
5
Q: How might I get detailed database error messages from dplyr::tbl?

Jon EricsonI'm using R to plot some data I pull out of a database (the Stack Exchange data dump, to be specific): dplyr::tbl(serverfault, dbplyr::sql(" select year(p.CreationDate) year, avg(p.AnswerCount*1.0) answers_per_question, sum(iif(ClosedDate is null, 0.0, 100.0))/count(*) ...

5:01 PM
@JonEricson How is your workflow then? Do you use the SEDE UI to off-load data in a CSV file or can you reach the SEDE db directly with tools like R?
Oh I ses FreeTDS there so you are probably reaching out to that DB directly. Nice.

5:22 PM
@rene Yes. It certainly saves time.

On the other hand the CSV file isn't wrapped in another select ;)

5:48 PM
@JonEricson glad to hear!
@Fabby smearing invisible poison on someone's door?

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Cadmium Sulfide would do the trick.
(used to be an ant-poison when I was a kid, not so much any more nowadays as there is no antidote)

That's what Russia used?

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Legend has it that Russia uses Polonium...

(read today a bit about how they did it)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Which case?

5:54 PM
No legend, Britain police got proof of the poisoning and images of the assassins.

Would you please be so kind as to share the article link?
