2 hours later…
3:28 AM
Morning
and time to stalk network-wide meta~

Seems unbearable. Why not grin and bear with it - or maybe ask for some clarification in a comment? — Journeyman Geek 26 secs ago
I think I got myself a ticket to that special place in hell.

4:37 AM
Ping me if you dare

kicked Journey

?

morning

1 hour later…
6:00 AM
@AdamLear Seeing as you're closing off-topic questions, can you please take care of my flag?

6:20 AM
4 messages moved to Chimney
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog That's probably not the best idea
We've had staff members annoyed that they're being overpinged in the tavern, and we had some staff members leave the tavern in part due to that.

@Magisch Had to do with the user who keeps reposting the same off-topic post

I'm sure it'll be handled in due time

Flags take time to get handled here on MSE, I've had flags waiting for nearly a month.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog so, just throw links to it with the right tag

so it goes

6:26 AM
@Magisch Shog explicitly gave permission in "Shog's 9 Rules" that I could ping him in case of emergency.

It's blatantly clear that shog wasn't happy with how you used that freedom though
I would really like to have staff members not dread coming in here because they get pinged so much

@JourneymanGeek I already reported their last post to Smokey, because it reached a point where they are outright abuse.
@Magisch I pretty much never used that emergency rule

I mean there's sufficient people here with delete votes and motivation to handle ot

in Chimney, 6 hours ago, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
!!/report https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/315038/blender-question-on-wieght-paint‌-mode "user keeps reposting same question on same site again and again"
(Can we please not move manual report commands to Chimney?)

6:30 AM
And a lot of them either are ok with being pinged for that

We lose context and I keep getting invited there

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog quite frankly quite a lot of folk have lost their temper at you here and elsewhere. This place tends to be somewhere everyone, not just you can hang out with staff on SE and talk informally about the network

It's clear that the current state of affairs is unsatisfactory for several users and staff

The fact that people are taking a break deeply concerns me and I've repeatedly have pointed out that, well many of these things are not critical to be handled right now

6:36 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Huh, what, you keep getting invited there? How come?
I never getting invited to Chimney when my messages got moved to there...

@Somewhat A bug. When a user's messages are moved to another room, occasionally, the user is invited to said room.
Doesn't happen all the time.

Guy is shit posting on MSE? We can deal with the posts. Someone will eventually deal with the user

I think we seriously need to cut back on the staff pings that happen here in the tavern

Faqs are mildly ambiguous? We have bigger issues

And we need to lose the "you're here so do what I want now please" type of attitude. that's what causes staff to not come here.

6:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek Couple of clarifications: 1. I'm not the first to complain about how long it takes for flags to get handled on MSE; @Shadow is the first. 2. The question ban is significantly harder to trigger on MSE due to the nature of the downvotes; I've pretty much never seen it triggered. A moderator is therefore needed to suspend the user. It's why we have a special suspension reason "asking programming questions on meta".

Shadow isn't pinging staff for attention

I complain much about SE, but I don't ping random people...

It's partly our fault that we let it get this far but it ought to stop

Adam isn't even a cm any more. Any cleanup are cause he feels like it and are appreciated

6:41 AM
It's not really helpful to bypass the normal channels of communication with staff to fast-track your requests. If nobody's handling flags on meta for a while, there's a reason for that.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog so. New geek's rule of pinging. No pinging unless it is an ongoing conversation, explicitly requested or needed because it is less confusing.
8

To formalize that a bit more: No more pinging staff members for fast-tracking requests, and no more pinging staff members in general unless explicitly requested or part of a currently ongoing conversation.
5

@Magisch It can take nearly a month for the flag to eventually get handled, which can make the situation pointed out in the flag irrelevant. Also, it can be possible that a bunch of odd wrong flags made at different times can be handled at once resulting in a ban, even though the flags in question were many weeks apart.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog if it is taking a while - clearly staff have other priorities

@Magisch What am I supposed to do if I need a piece of information in order to update an FAQ question or answer a question?

6:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek ... Like the fact that it's late at night and Monday is a holiday...

For instance, there are a few unanswered parts to the proposed FAQ on merging.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog if you don't know - someone else can deal with it

You can also open a post on meta asking for the faq to be updated and proposing a new version

@Catija I'm only up because it's only been a while and the time zone change is a bit hard to handle. How about you?

What he said
@Catija and that

6:47 AM
I've been writing something for work and grateful to not be pinged for five hours straight so I can do so without being distracted.

@Magisch Risk of downvotes from people who think it's not useful to know about the intricate details of the system, plus slow answers from staff

It's high time we stop trying to get staff to confirm to our ideas of what they should prioritize. It's their platform and flags are there for a reason. We don't have a monopoly on their time. It's gone on far enough that staff members are now considering not even coming to this room anymore. And that is a sad thing that doesn't need to happen.

And now I only have 5% battery left and it's almost 2 AM... so it's time to sleep.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog meh. If you think it helps the community as a whole it's worth it

Sleep well. And enjoy the holiday :)

Fear of downvotes is a cop out

no one dares to ping me???
crying

@Journey ping :p

@Journey Aww... Good morning? :)
I'm just done catching up with the transcripts.

6:52 AM
I am deeply amused to how badly your scheme is working @Journey

@Tinkeringbell that's a reply not a ping

@Journey I know. But since there just was this thing about pinging... :P

poor @Journey

^

@Tinkeringbell he changed his nick to a subset of mine so I would get pinged when he does....
Onnnnnnnlyyyyyyy
It didn't quite work as planned Mwahahaha

6:54 AM
After that only I thought I could've changed it to cat or sho

@JourneymanGeek I know... so there's the lesser evil of helping to make it work, or the greater evil of entirely ignoring the plan :P

~O_O~

The joke is I get legitimately pinged so much in chat I would hardly notice

If I change my name to sho, chances are there people get kicked out of the room

@JourneymanGeek Hmmm. I mostly get replies, not pings.

6:56 AM
or may be me

It would be much better if MSE had community moderators, but that's gonna take a while to happen.

It happened before

Because the SE staff clearly don't have enough time on hand to moderate MSE.

But even they have real lived and often day jobs

@JourneymanGeek In the MSO days, but their official reasoning for revoking Trilogy mods' access was because there were too many of them.

6:57 AM
Well, Stack Apps did, so we can still crossing fingers

@JourneymanGeek "enough time on hand"
not meaning that they have enough time on hand, but choose not to use it

And.. oh, some beta SE sites still have problem with flag handling even with elected mods, so MSE is not the only problem with flags :p

@Somewhat Elections and appointments are called by the SE team, so such sites have more frequent elections and appointments.

And even with active mods we might take time off

6:59 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog SE staffs won't look at flags. from xp

@JourneymanGeek I do, but rarely, only when really needed, and don't try again if ignored.

Now, I could ask a question on why the SE team doesn't handle flags, but it would be perceived as a rant and attract downvotes.

Sure you could
And I would respect a well written argument to why it is important

having community mods on MSE would probably solve a lot of the tension
I recall having that discussion before and shog explaining how appointing some wasn't viable right now due to software difficulties et al.

There's a precedence with "Why Contact Us is slow to response" and got received very well :)

7:10 AM
Yup

@Magisch IIRC the only roadblock was that community mods would have access to the staff rooms, but they've already gotten around that by only allowing users with the staff bit access

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog iirc the other road block would be appointing and finding the people who get to be mods, from when I suggested this to shog
Make a feature request for it if you're feeling enterprising

Huh, it looks like I qualify for 13 of the 17 "candidate score" badges that can be earned on MSE (the other 3 have to do with per-site meta participation or voting in a prior election)
And I've already secured the Yearling badge, but as my account's less than a year old I don't yet qualify

Bottom line is the only way it has a chance of happening will be a well argued FR, I think.

To summarize, of the 4 remaining badges, one I'm guaranteed to earn and two I'll likely earn in the near future.

7:21 AM
I don't think people decide moderator eligibility solely by candidate score
especially voters dont

Has there been a time when you haven't voted for a candidate with a very high score for some other reason?

yes, actually every single time I vote in an election

What reason, for instance? Their nomination was lacking?

When considering voting for a candidate I usually take into account if I know them and their judgement from other places
Also answers to the questions

@Magisch Just as an example: if I had a 36/37 candidate score (full 20 rep points, plus the three badges above), you wouldn't vote for me because of my history here?

7:24 AM
Yes

History and personal matters affect, it's basic and acceptable.

Then there comes another question: do we vote based on great site participation, or great Meta participation? A lot of users say they value site participation and don't value Meta participation that much. So they wouldn't vote for a person like me with tons of rep on Meta but relatively little on other sites.

@JourneymanGeek nope. The mods before were the SO mods who happened to be mods on the central meta because it didn't have its own site.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I think he's aware of that.

I'm pretty sure MSE will never have "custom" moderators.

7:27 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard It was promised in the 2014 post announcing the meta split: "eventually, we'll appoint moderators"
Then a 2015 question where staff answer that it'll happen eventually
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Also, more accurately, Trilogy mods (SO, SU, and SF), not just SO; e.g. random was an SU mod only, but was an active MSO mod in the day.

Fact: you can have high/full candidate score and questionable behaviour (and even getting suspended), like... on SO's election.

7:46 AM
@Somewhat or get elected then fall short
Or burn out, which is a very common reason we lose mods

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I don't think you'd be the person for the job atm
Don't get me wrong I don't dislike you or anything

You talk about potential MSE mods?

Heh, I'd just choose current RO :p
and maybe 1 or 2 more...

Monica would be a great one. What's one more diamond? 'p

I'd probably go for the usual active meta users. Monica, Journeyman, maybe Glorfindel
I'd say rene but I'm certain he wouldn't want to

7:58 AM
I actually suspect meta would have very few flags

Yeah it'd be mostly procedural stuff like getting rid of code problem questions on meta quickly

Whoot shopping trip is a success

Maybe that's why they haven't appointed anyone yet - technically there's only a little bit of stuff that needs doing on meta that normal users can't deal with.

@Magisch which we do ok anyway

for all the clamoring about flags not getting handled we're talking about maybe like 10 flags a month or something like that

8:00 AM
or if I had a diamond on Anime.SE, any identification question will be nuked in less than 3 minutes while I awake...

Maybe a little tweak on review queue threshold

That's not what a mod is supposed to use their diamond for though
Mostly on stuff normal users can't

@Somewhat outside SO I think most mods want empty flag queues most of the time

yeah, that's why I have realized and decided that I won't nominate myself, ever...

@JourneymanGeek Empty? :P What's that?

8:02 AM
Bliss

Unless you're a specific local parrot that is a glutton for comment flags

:p

:p

To be honest, most flag handling is done by the other mods right now ;) I'm trying to write FAQ stuff in my free time ;)

8:04 AM
Heh. I personally consider meta involvement very important for a potential mod
Almost as important as being willing to be a mod :p

When deciding who to vote for I usually just go by my best guess about how they'll behave as mod
I don't have internal scoring or anything like that, just feeling mostly

It's actually... a popularity contest...

Thats how it ends up yeah :p

Shockingly enough... Totally true

It's way easier to just get appointed on a beta site. You don't have to be popular for that

8:07 AM
still failed on that one. Probably because I wasn't active enough at the time
or any other reason I can't guess.

My guess? Timezones :P
We lost Cat, got another America based mod :)

eh
I'll probably never find out the real reason
part of the game

Yeah... an annoying part too.
You never know why they picked exactly you, you never get to know why they don't. :/

Well I think I got SR.SE cause I was a non mod user folks knew reasonably well

mod elections on SO are kinda rough

8:12 AM
Ah.
I don't do SO

I think the only thing I found kinda sad over at IPS when we were gathering volunteers last time, was that someone nominated someone, that person declined... and the nomination got a boatload of downvotes nonetheless.

8:31 AM
gonna take a nap, please wake me up if it's already morning

@Magisch deleted:1

@Somewhat wake up it's almost noon

Its 130am here

woke up

130 is 01:30 or 13:00?
oh AM
lol
@TravisJ Las Vegas time zone?

8:36 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Yes, yes it is :)

You gamble a lot?

gambling with Schrodinger's bug? not a good idea...

When I get a chance to, it kind of takes a lot of time to properly gamble.

You know what they say - collocation doesn't imply correlation
Actually... it does

Vegas is a short 5 hour drive from me, so we tend to go once every 6 months or so.
It's like the adult version of Disneyland

8:47 AM

@Derpy or... 100% Empty, 100% Not Empty

Schrodinger's Schrodinger...

One thing is for sure, cats shouldn't be placed long term in boxes because it is terrible for their health and personal wellbeing.

If the cat doesn't exist it shouldn't matter.

But when you open the box, it's either in front of you alive, or.... behind you, holding a katana and bandana :/

8:58 AM
Well existence wasn't really part of the observation.

But if there is a box and a cat, the cat will be in the box

It was either in one state of being or another, but both ways the cat was present. #superpositioningrequiresaninstance
@Somewhat Or, it could also be riding a unicorn that is breathing fire while wielding the golden gun in front of a rainbow.

and it's behind you... you are doooooooooooooooomed...

Once a friend of mine was house sitting for us, and he came over to check on the cat at night. He came in, and in the middle of the floor he could see the eye shine from my cat. So he reached into his pocket for his phone to turn on the light, and when he turned the light on the cat was gone. He said it freaked him out a little.

Now think about how your cat was freaked out by your friend ...

9:04 AM
lol
It's true, I think the cat hid under the bed

animal abuse ...

@rene I thought that was the endless posting of cute animal pictures in a SE chatroom that's supposed to contain no fun?

If you dislike fun then you want mSO.

This was a triumph?

9:13 AM
@TravisJ There must be a way to have fun on mSO as well... nothing is fun free nowadays ;)

@TravisJ Lately there's a heaping of caustic cynicism in there too

@Magisch I agree.
@Tinkeringbell There used to be unicorns and waffles :(

So, they don't just disappear ;) Make mSO fun again by stubbornly clinging on to those ;)

I found you lose a lot of the fun when opening any interesting post that there's either 1) a highly voted post disparaging the company, 2) highly voted comments disparaging the company, 3) pure unfettered cynicism as response to honest questions 4) all of the above

There does seem to be a trend for that at the moment.

9:19 AM
@Magisch and the best part is, you can actually critique many of the things the company does without disparaging the people.
Well most of the time. ;p

@JourneymanGeek Yeah but even though it's not directly disparaging people saying "Management doesn't care anyways about anything but revenue generating new users more like $tackoverflow amirite" grates a bit after the 10.000th remark to that effect

@Magisch it does.
Though I'm slightly guilty of complaining about The Company being SO centric too ;p

If SO goes... this whole thing goes.
That's where the centricity comes from at least
(I made that word up apparently it was redlined here, but Google agrees that it was a real word)

@TravisJ kinda true but I also feel some aspects of that also... well resulted in the current state of affairs

Hey... SO is about to be 10 years old now... let's have fun!

9:25 AM
@Somewhat Yay, it's about to hit puberty... :/

lol

@Tinkeringbell yanno. That explains a lot

I think that each exchange is slightly different, and has different needs. As for Stack Overflow's specific current state, I think that it needs to have its topicality revisited.

@TravisJ SO's kinda... in that wierd place.

I wrote about it on mSO a few days ago

9:27 AM
Its big enough that it can't really grow without affecting quality, I doubt that any attempt to alter things in any way would fly....

The close reasons need to change.
It can grow while increasing quality, it just needs some stronger definitions.
I can easily defend this assertion with one simple example: GitHub. GitHub is like, 90% code. It is really popular right now. All of the code on the site is available to read. Users post code to it at a ridiculous rate. There is a massive supply of users writing code. There is a massive demand for a place to write code. We just need to better facilitate the connection between the two.

I hear GitHub will have its own Q&A...

I doubt they would close questions which require "too much reading" and "too much coding" to answer.
That would be a strong competitor for SO though, in all honesty.
Both sites have similar mission statements.
> GitHub brings together the world's largest community of developers to discover, share, and build better software.
> Stack Overflow is the largest, most trusted online community for developers to learn, share their programming knowledge, and build their careers.

New junkyard for homework dumps?

I think GitHub's Q&A will be a strong competitor for SOfT (SO Teams), not SO in general...
wait, wrong

9:40 AM
@Somewhat git already has wider adoption then SO in general. In many companies, git is already integrated into the central workflow
so it stands to reason that a github Q/A project would outcompete SO for teams severely and quickly.

I mean, I believe GitHub's Q&A will be based on each repo, which is actually a good idea
So library-specific Q&A will go to GitHub, and general programming will go to SO

@Magisch It's true, github claims to have 28 million users. That far exceeds SO's 9.3 million.

(ignore SOfT because it's private, not public)

@Somewhat private repos exist
And developers already have the infrastructure to handle those integrated into their workflows
Adding a q/a component would be trivial by comparison and would be right there in the same space devs already use

Anyway, getting back to my original point... SO's topicality needs to get fixed.
Needs moar code. Needs less whining.

9:50 AM
Random topic, but: Google Chrome is now 10 years old...
Chrome and SO...
I feel old ._.

I love the chrome browser

I grew up with Internet Explorer... took quite a while for me to even try Chrome...

@Magisch Wow.... if those coding questions keep up at that rate, I might run out of close votes today ;)

It's particularly bad today I feel

9:55 AM
Using internet explorer is like parachuting without a backup chute.

The... Eternal... September...

@Somewhat It'll get better. :)
@TravisJ People that dare to do that are actually pretty cool :P

@Tinkeringbell You can only do that for about a year before fatally crashing.

@TravisJ Depends on how often you jump.
If I just jump once, and never after? :P

Yeah, okay, fine. Fine. If it was just one time, and you didn't tell your friends about it, then okay. Pretty cool.
I feel bad for Government employees who are forced to use Internet Explorer. No wonder stuff gets hacked all the time.

10:00 AM
But if you do something cool, you tell your friends about it... How else are people to know I'm cool?
I mean, you post it on Facebook, Twitter with a lot of hashtags, Instagram... and you tell the people on SE chat...
Otherwise no-one will know you're cool...

I'm a cooler

Okay, that's cool.

Well, it was cool because you got away with it. Once you tell your friends, they might ridicule you for using IE, or perhaps, SE chat will ridicule you for using IE :P

Hey, it was perfectly acceptable when I grew up to use IE! and startpagina.nl and ilse (a search engine).
We were pretty cool, other people didn't even have a computer/internet!

And I was an avid user of Altavista (search engine)... on IE->Netscape->Opera

10:05 AM
Lycos. altavista, ask jeeves (which was awesome once...)

I started using chrome by accident after one of my brothers installed it :P

I didn't like netscape as much as ie

browserwise. Netscape, IE, Mozilla, opera, firefox, chrome, firefox, vivaldi ;p

metacrawler was pretty sweet, regexed meta caches similar to google except like 5 years earlier
Firefox was definitely an improvement over IE, but only barely since it used the same kind of failed core that existed in both products.
Turns out there was a fairly strong correlation between Mozilla and Microsoft.

And those search aggregator apps where you can search on 10+ search engines on a single app...

10:08 AM
Alright, it's 3am and I am clearly not getting enough work done to justify staying up later
goodnight o/

night :)

@TravisJ Good night!
Why do people stay up until 3am?

@Tinkeringbell Why not?

@Mithrandir biorythms?

10:13 AM
I'm most productive at around that time

I lose all focus after 11.

Holy pingcount Batman. Can't I have a quiet weekend?

@Bart Is that a rhetorical question?

@Bart I thought you had a quiet weekend since you ignored all the pings?

I had a quiet weekend since I spent it in bed with a massive migraine. But same end result I guess :D

10:18 AM
D:

See the Tavern hasn't been much fun over the weekend anyway. :/

10:35 AM
huh, they came out not as "manually reported"?

It's a subtle hint that you should have waited a bit instead of reporting :P

11:01 AM
