@Catija I saw them fine (still do) on the main site, refreshed chat too now, all appears to be fine. :)
Schrodinger's imgur: when the cache-breaker comes, you have 50% chance of seeing broken images
They're still broken for me... :(
Can I clear just the imgur cache?
@Catija I think they just haven't propagated to all of the CDN's servers yet
Imgur is working normally for me. It has been the same for 2 hours.
I think just the U.S.-based servers haven't propagated yet.
4:45 AM
hi
busy day T T
5:26 AM
sigh I am almost going to regret this...
@JourneymanGeek o_O?

A: What is the meaning of picture in "Code of Conduct"?

Journeyman Geek If you need to know who to include, you're missing the point.

Lacks dogs :( ;p
6:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek plants represent though
13 messages moved to Chimney
sneaky plant. I didn't notice it.
6:33 AM
> Welcome to the Tech Solidarity Slack! The purpose of this Slack is to support tech folks in taking effective action to protect democracy, oppose the Trump administration, and support the people who are most vulnerable to it.
Seems like a weird thing to write into a code of conduct
well, if its what it says it is, it makes sense.
@JourneymanGeek wouldn't that belong into a mission statement rather then into a CoC?
Sometimes there's no difference
And sometimes you don't need either ;)
I'm having some gripes with this though:
> For most first-time misconduct, moderators will remove offending content and send a warning. Most issues are resolved here.
Well, what's wrong with that?
6:39 AM
Unless a change of policy enforcement is wanted, that is a false statement. Depending on the severity, the vast majority of people will never see a warning
ah, true
a may works better than a will?
Unless you make it a serious habit, snarky comments ain't gonna earn you a mod message
yea
or even a may choose to or may resort to
Writing such a thing is actually pretty dangerous too. It creates the expectation that "If I'm not warned, I'm fine"
@SomethingBadHappened Just a completely curious question: Is this account yours?
6:49 AM
@Magisch Or, now, a few snarky comments might earn you a message, if a mod happens to notice.
@Mithrandir Yeah but the "If I haven't got a message, I'm doing just fine" is blatantly false right now
And this wording encourages this thinking in new users
I've not much more to add past an upvote ;)
I wouldn't actually have a problem with getting a warning if a comment of yours is in violation of the CoC, but I don't foresee that happening (workload for the mods) and am worried of the false learning effect that may have to well meaning new users
7:04 AM
yup
that little bit of wiggle room would be useful
though sadly our only real options are still to either suspend or do nothing, rather than stopping a user with a series of bad comments from... commenting
Mod messages do carry weight though
I got one once and it shook me up pretty good
@JourneymanGeek This miiiiiight be something I mentioned in the mod survey
True, but that's pretty much relying on moral suasion and good intentions
@JourneymanGeek People with bad intentions can eat the suspension imo
@Mithrandir sadly I didn't even think about it.
@Magisch there's this thin line of folks with good intentions and terrible social skills.
7:09 AM
Troll or someone with interesting variations on english ranting?
RA flag
Its ... a really bad fake asian-english accent
@JourneymanGeek ok, flagged
sigh people sometimes
actually I kinda noticed a CM here (HI!) and am almost tempted to ping her about it
7:14 AM
I have a feeling it's night time at her place so maybe not
(also hi btw)
...why does that user have two linked Math.SE accounts
waffles that ^
@rene I took a screenshot of that just now because I also found it interesting
Apparently one of them is deleted
I like waffles.
Oh, the network profile was nuked? Or linked to wrong account? And the one on Math.SE got suspended

Q: Why does Joe Friend (and a few others) have two Stack Overflow accounts, each tied to the same Stack Exchange profile?

Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog(Please read carefully. This isn't about sock puppets.) I just noticed that our friendly Joe Friend has two Stack Overflow accounts, only one of which has moderator privileges. He seems to have another account, which is listed as having the same network account as the former account, and the sam...

7:25 AM
At least it doesn't use "Nooomal Hueeeman", or I'll rage and find his home address...
.... I didn't even consider that
user334271
8:06 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Have I hurt anyone with my messages? I do not have any specific "good" or "bad" theory of mind for any person or any community, but I think many of the persons in SE showing a rude behaviour actually put step on some misunderstanding, and it take a few more conversation to clear it. However there are some users (I avoid any specific example) continue to behave rude, critical and quarrelsome, but ther good things come out with time.
user334271
There are certain situations where a negative commentator/ harsh language user have a lack in expertise or interest in a specific sub-field in which the question belong.
@AlwaysConfused I haven't read your messages so I can't answer your first question. Anyway, with regards to the message you mentioned in your first messages I responded to: imagine that you were just learning English and didn't have much experience with it. How would you feel if someone shouted in your face, "Are you speaking English?"?
It's happened to me so many times that people misunderstand what I'm saying because they infer the wrong thing from me, rather than taking what I say literally.
user334271
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog How can I understand you are shouting? it is typed letters.
welcoming to everyone is impossible btw
presence of certain people will act as a deterrent to others, making the community unwelcoming for them
user334271
@JourneymanGeek I see! that's only 1 apparent reason; but there could be 1000 more reason, maybe the speaker is very bad in English (in that example), so may be the speaker actually tried to confess but mistakenly used wrong wording?
user334271
8:16 AM
As well are my messages harsh? Or my wordings are perfectly ok?
Well, you can focus on that specific wrong wording and help them make it better.
@AlwaysConfused In real life, you can use cues like a person's tone and body language to infer their intent. That was a skill that took me many years to learn and get a grasp on. However, in online communication, you can't use such cues. What often tends to happen is that people here assume the worst - that they're shouting or trolling - because of the lack of those cues.
user334271
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I am blind about almost all body languages except a cry and a laughter. Seriously.
@AlwaysConfused The proper thing would be to say, "I can't understand what you mean by '[quote]'. Can you please clarify?"
@AlwaysConfused That was me at eight years old.
user334271
Hmm actually we need a lot of practice for correct wording
user334271
8:18 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog That is me on 27 years too. I am 27 years old
@AlwaysConfused Basic rule? It's okay to point out what needs improving/is off-topic/you don't understand. Always follow it up with an explanation of why it needs improving and how it should be done. :)
Anyway, I suggest talking to @Tinkeringbell, who hangs out here from time to time and moderates the Interpersonal Skills site. I've asked her for help on how to word things and how things come across to people, and she's very helpful in explaining.
user334271
@Tinkeringbell Yes, it could be helpful
@Tinkeringbell (I'm on the mobile site which doesn't autoscroll, so I didn't see you chime in)
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog It's okay :) I'm on mobile too.
user334271
8:21 AM
I prefer desktop. And I need a big clicky keyboard.
CoC: Cease on Conflict
user334271
HaHa
I still have to get used to that abbreviation. I grew up with CoC being a very different thing ;)
@Tinkeringbell Out of curiosity, what was that?
user334271
Whenever any of my sayings appear rude, alert me; I will try to rectify.
8:25 AM
@Tinkeringbell ._.
Clan of the Cats?
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Probably this.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog The CoC (technically COC) is a big organisation here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COC_Nederland
(great webcomic... kinda petered out cause the artist fell sick :( )
ahh
Better than Clash of Clans...
user334271
Shuttlecock?
user334271
8:39 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Previously I was punished/objectioned in charge of "shouting", in Wikipedia and in Stackexchange; later I came to know I used a lot of bolds, italique, underlined, foreground and background colours, font-styles, altering font sizes etc; all of which were perceived as shouting. But I did that because in real life I get confused to read a series of bland uniform texts, and I need to highlight various parts of speeches, causal relationships etc. that instinctively led me overuse highlighs
user334271
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Actually I got a correct diagnosis at my 23 yrs age; when I came to know I do not know there is any role of eye contact in normal conversation. BEFORE THAT that I was misdiagnosed as lack-of-confidence, over-ambition, study-anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and my complaints about face-recognition difficulty had been simply ignored.
9:28 AM
@AlwaysConfused You were a victim of false positives. I was a victim of false negatives: I was never diagnosed at all. Perhaps it's because I was sufficiently different from my cousin in the UK who is full-blown autistic.
imgur being borked is getting on my nerves :(
probably getting on Nick's worse :P
@JourneymanGeek But how will you provide us with mandatory daily ash pictures now?
loading pictures from imgur isn't working. Err too many redirects
9:37 AM
I actually think that's a little big for him
(did that work?)
@OptimusPrime redirecting you to http:// and then to https:// and then http:// and then https:// and then http:// and then https://...
@JourneymanGeek I can see it on mobile now. This morning on PC pictures were borked.
@Tinkeringbell apparently they did something stupid and caching
they put a 301 permanent redirect from http to https to http
user334271
9:52 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Maybe. But autism spectrum explains each of my problems. The complaints teachers did on me, the torcheringly bullying classmates who hated me, the troubles I faced day to day life, all explained.
10:32 AM
Looks like I've got a new most-downvoted post: https://meta.stackoverflow.com/q/372201/1709587

(And another reminder of the community's divergent politeness standards.)
11:24 AM
@MarkAmery I think you'll never get everyone to have one standard of politeness ;) Anyway, I'm curious... why ask on SO meta and not just try? Was the flag declined?
You totally missed an opportunity, @TimPost ;)
@Mithrandir Have you already tried like... everything? :P
yes
well, not to the extent that M Oehm could, probably
morse code an imgur link to ash pictures
extra reward
@Magisch Next random swag challenge: Have a pet cuter than Ash :P
11:29 AM
It's got 18 characters or something there, they could've encoded STACKCODEOFCONDUCT or something.
(Or FGNPXPBQRBSPBAQHPG, as ROT13)
@Mithrandir That's like too easy?
Okay, a ROT13 added on top of it would make it more interesting, but still very easy ;)
@Tinkeringbell nobody wins that
11:45 AM
@Tinkeringbell I did flag it - but I wasn't sure what the best choice was in the circumstance where both the old "no longer needed" and new "unkind" reasons apply, hence the question about which to pick
What I wasn't expecting was for the community to vehemently reject the entire premise of the question due to not thinking that the "unkind" flag was applicable to the comment in question in the first place!
@MarkAmery Ah... So, instead of something between r/a and nln, we now need something between unkind and nln ;)
@Tinkeringbell somehow I'm not persuaded that that would make the situation better :)
@MarkAmery I know ;) I was just trying to point out that there'll always be these moments where you won't know which flag to pick
@Tinkeringbell I suppose I'm not sure I grasp what the new flag is for. Unless we use it for comments that are actually valuable and constructive contributions while simultaneously being possible to construe "unfriendly" (which I refuse to do, even if it turns out the staff would like us to), it's just a subset of NLN.
@MarkAmery Hmmm. Maybe. I think it's very helpful on some sites... sometimes you get stuff that isn't directly harassment, bigotry or abuse, but is very unfriendly...
For example, about every other comment on IPS telling someone they're doing life entirely wrong...
11:56 AM
@Tinkeringbell Hmm, I suppose I am thinking in SO-specific terms. I guess some other sites (like IPS, and Workplace) have norms against using comments to criticise an answer (with the idea being that you should use an answer of your own to articulate a different viewpoint), whereas on Stack Overflow using comments to criticise posts is mostly considered to be a good thing.
umm... What's nln?
no logner needed
@MarkAmery True. They're even okay on IPS as well, given that you're actually asking the answerer to explain something, or are suggesting something they can do/incorporate to improve their post. Yet we get soo many '-1 this will never work'...
Maybe each site should get its own set of comment flag reasons?
11:58 AM
(those go in no longer needed though...)
@Tinkeringbell I have left a handful of those in my time before the difference in commenting norms became clear to me. I think I probably have about a 75% comment deletion rate across non-SO sites on the network.
@MarkAmery My comments do get deleted too, mostly because they either served their purpose or I was considered to be no longer funny ;)
Yes, that sinking feeling when you realize you're no longer funny ... that makes so sad ....
user310756
12:14 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I'm going to catch you dang nabbit. [re meta rep - you've started something :D]
user310756
@rene I had that when I became a mother and my children could talk to me.
12:28 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog No
@YvetteColomb yes, top tip from rene: don't learn your kids how to speak. You'll regret it, sooner or later.
user310756
@rene easier said when your children are of a species that doesn't usually speak.
true, true.
@YvetteColomb Well, windblown wildflowers and grasses can hiss.
user310756
well yes indeed, we all agree rene does hiss :D
12:37 PM
Please be Code of Conduct ...
user310756
of course LoL CoC
I'm conducting my code now...
user310756

It's sphagetti
user310756
ah Italian code.
user310756
12:40 PM
spaghetti code - the only dish a programmer doesn't enjoy
Hey so here's a bit of a worry of mine: If I comment on someone's answer critiquing them, some people _could_ regard it as "Unfriendly or unkind", right?

Consider my comment on the last answer here, for example:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/10581460/fabric-js-changes-my-canvas-size-to-300x150-after-initialization/46593223#46593223

I guess it isn't very friendly per-sé, but I personally wouldn't call it unfriendly either. Are comments like that gonna be an issue now?
Tbh I should probably just post that as a question on Meta..
user310756
@BerryM. for the love of sanity, please no.
user310756
It's not the best comment.
@BerryM. Please dont
user310756
> Why would you call this "A real answer to this question"? This answer is heavily opinionated, filled to the brim with bad practices and uses jQuery while the question asked did not involve jQuery whatsoever.
12:52 PM
The last thing we need is extra meta wars over definitions of unwelcoming
user310756
> It sets the size to the full viewport through CSS rather than the correct way, even through the OP did not specify needing the canvas to be the full size anywhere in his question. It also applies global wildcard styles not related to the canvas at all. In short, disregard this "real" answer
Fair enough
user310756
@Magisch yes the two subjects. "why was my comment deleted" / "why was my flag declined'
user310756
ok the first part could be written. "This answer offers the use of JQuery, which wasn't part of the question"
@YvetteColomb I started this to pre-empt rule lawyering cluelessness from people but I might be overthinking it
12:54 PM
I really wonder if mod teams are... panicking over the new flags
They're probably not too worried and not too fussed about doing anything different
communicating that to the userbase however....
user310756
seconde part "the questions doesn't ask for a full size canvas. Avoid setting global wildcard styles or setting the size through css"
user310756
@BerryM. ^^
user310756
@SomewhatMemorableName I dunno. it's been a nightmare on meta
Heh, thanks I guess
Isn't every "big" change?
12:56 PM
@YvetteColomb How about on the flag dashboard? :)
user310756
> Every time you violate the CoC, no matter how slightly, you'll get a warning
"This answer is opinion based and advocates bad practices like $explain. It also uses JQuery which OP did not request."
user310756
@Magisch that's not technically true
@YvetteColomb I know, read on
I'm saying the wording makes users think that'll be the case.
user310756
@SomewhatMemorableName the dashboard is fine.
12:58 PM
Well... that's kind of reassuring...
Tim has confirmed multiple times that enforcement isn't gonna see large changes
I wish people would take him at his word and give him the benefit of the doubt for now
user310756
@Magisch the true change occurred when the first welcoming blog came out. Nothing much (in terms of moderation) will change from then
user310756
we were just enforcing the site's policies more closely. The policies were always there. They needed to be spelt out
@YvetteColomb Pretty sure every one of the comments that is deleted now would have been deleted then if flagged. I think the main change is to sensibilize users to flag more
What should non-sensible users do? Do they get sensibilized? Is there a training to follow?
user310756
1:14 PM
non-sensible users get to live in the bliss of ignorance
@rene it's more of a voluntary think ala "I don't have to put up with being snarked on so much"
user310756
is anyone else getting issues with the browsers taking a long time to load (js problems I think) but scripts related to the site
@YvetteColomb no-repro
user310756
@SomewhatMemorableName nah
user310756
1:22 PM
@rene hm it's only happening on this network. I'll drill into my scripts
Poor tech solidarity slack CoC: after the SE coc post went up, that document has been horribly defaced: docs.google.com/document/d/…
shared to Reddit and 4chan
(nah... not worth...)
@TimPost Could you reconsider linking to docs.google.com/document/d/… in the COC blog post? It seems to have attracted a large swath of people trying to deface the document
1:38 PM
@Magisch did I miss something? I don't see it linked on the current blog post
or I looked at the wrong direction
@SomewhatMemorableName It's linked under what the CoC is being inspired by
> This text incorporates ideas and language from the Coral Project, Buffer, and Tech Solidarity codes of conduct.
oh, the CoC page itself, not the blog post

1 hour later…
2:41 PM
> You seem to be missing what we're confused about. The Code of Conflict is not meant to cover all forms of conflict resolution [...] -- animuson
oh well, typo...
"Code of Conflict" is a gloriously accurate description of that document.
13
@MarkAmery this terrible vandalism at Solidarity doc sort of demonstrates things that could go wrong with the new CoC. They pretend to "help", "be inclusive", "educate", "give credits to sources" and do other good things. But this really results in useful content being damaged by hordes of senseless link-clickers who just don't care. Good intentions, road to hell
2:57 PM
still imgur didn't fixed it?
Looks like Facebook conducting an A/B testing. But, It started few months ago and still you didn't completed it @facebook? Here's my feedback, The new icons sucks. Old one is better.
@gnat I'm not sure that's exactly exemplary of the sort of problems I expect from the CoC. The main lesson there seems to be "when you wade into the culture war, people fight you". Except the current CoC does a good job of staying out of culture war issues. The silly intersectional feminist tropes from v1 like "if somebody says you're making them uncomfortable, that's a magical trump card that gives them total power to order you around and if you don't submit you're an abuser" are now gone
The old one is better than new one. Old one is just a quarter piece of sh* t whereas the new one is half piece of sh *t
but it has a red dot, so the data is gonna say it's better
4
3:13 PM
@gnat what the hell?
"A strange game, professor Falken; the only winning move is not to play..."
@canon CoC referred this document as one of their sources, you can find link to it in there (link under words "Tech Solidarity"). They didn't pay attention that it refers editable googledoc and just advertised the new CoC to tens or hundreds thousands folks over SE network. As a result, some of the readers clicked that link end made vandalising edits to that googledoc
@gnat that was more of a, "what a mess..." comment. :P
@KevinB hmm. the old one
16
Q: Code of Conduct links to text of dubious quality and relevance

MastAt the bottom of the Code of Conduct: This text incorporates ideas and language from the Coral Project, Buffer, and Tech Solidarity codes of conduct. First of all, have some imaginary points for including where you got your inspiration. Credit where credit is due, etc. However... Has anyo...

FWIW, it's open to edit suggestion, so the final view is still.... safe. Doesn't mean the linking to an editable doc is a good idea though.
In fact, it just shows that SE users are not that different to 4chan...
3:30 PM
@SomewhatMemorableName If by that you mean "amongst millions of users, some are dicks", then, yeah, that's inevitable.
@MarkAmery "amongst millions of users, some are [entertaining]"? :P
2
some are really dicks..‌.
lol
sort of picturing the dancing cacti from smb3
3:55 PM
It bugs me to see people suggesting comments to leave on questions with problems without at all mentioning leaving a close vote that directly matches the comment being left
why do people avoid close votes
This is why we can't have nice things
@SomewhatMemorableName Yeah the vandalism got worse as the day progressed
4:18 PM
It's almost as if some of the users are both.
oh, wait, that was sarcasm, is that now illegal
sarcasm is not illegal, declaring that it's a sarcasm is illegal

@ShadowWizard Just give it time :P
Tavern is love. Tavern is live.

Hi all!
Hello world?
@ShadowWizard wow. I know I'm fat but that's.... :P
There are also small worlds!
@ShadowWizard I'm going to worldbuilding right now, ask what the smallest possible world would weigh and get back to you! :D

There are lots of very smart people doing fascinating work on cryptographic voting protocols. We should be funding and encouraging them, and doing all our elections with paper ballots until everyone currently working in that field has retired.

5:27 PM
@Tinkeringbell lol! Got an answer? ;)
heh, nice HNQ there....
Doesn't "Netherlands" mean "low lands"?
@Tinkeringbell
Pronoun: netherworld
  1. The place to which one's spirit descends upon death, conceived as below the surface of the earth.
  2. In some religions, one's soul departs to a netherworld, hell, instead of the heavens.
  3. The locale of the spirit world or afterlife, whether deemed to be situated below the world of the living or not.
  4. While I was astrally projecting, I felt my soul pass through many insubstantial netherworlds.
  5. Specifically, a location of punishment in the afterlife; a hell.
(3 more not shown…)
presumably then, the Netherlands are the places in the Netherworld where you can build a house and plant stuff.
Netherworld. With tulips!
status-bug
I, for one, think it's pretty great that we can casually chat with so many damned spirits here on a regular basis.
5:37 PM
the CoC mail contains Meta SO logo. Not SO logo
well... CoC is pretty meta
It's the footer, area for company logo and name
I still haven't gotten any of these emails :-/
oh wait - I got one for a sockpuppet on a different account
...weird. Not even a good sockpuppet.
that means something...
Aug 3 at 23:00, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
@Shog9 You previously said you didn't care much about this bug, but it now has a much wider scope, covering all sites with responsive design, rather than just Meta as before. Is your position still the same?
4
Q: Clicked voting arrows on sites with responsive design show with wrong color under Internet Explorer 11

Sonic the Inclusive HedgehogOn sites with the new responsive design, the color of clicked vote buttons have a theme color related to the site's design. However, on Internet Explorer 11, this arrow always shows as orange, regardless of the site. This seems to have been copied from Stack Overflow. Can this please be fixed? ...

@Shog9 ^^
5:42 PM
I probably used it for posting really rude & abusive stuff
Wait. I didn't get a mail on my sock account
I have like 20-some accounts just on SO; I'd have expected a few more of these emails
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog glad to see, people still using IE
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Sort of. But the low lands description is generally used to indicate a geographical area including Belgium and Luxembourg
@Shog9 Great. First I'm as big as a small world and now I'm damned? Are we sure that code of conduct is working?
@ShadowWizard Hahaha not so hasty! Writing a good question takes time and inspiration and not being lazy ;)
5:52 PM
I feel strongly that the CoC ensures polite and courteous treatment of damned souls, and will enforce it accordingly
5
@Shog9 did SO notified imgur about the bug from your side?
yes
Nick's been fighting working with them for the past day & a half

@Shog9 You violated the Acceptable Use Policy
And they're saying nothing happened on 7th and 8th

I'm using internet explorer 5.5 and the site is broken. HALP
@canon Use your internet explorer to download chrome.

@canon I had to Google that :P. But yeah, that's what I was aiming for ;)

@Tinkeringbell The Google Chrome install page loads perfectly fine in IE6. Just tested.

user310756
@Tinkeringbell totally not sure

Oh @SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I assume you can vote as well (for context: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/313136/…)
@YvetteColomb If you're looking for stats about SO specifically, is there a reason you've asked on MSE?
I guess I see that you're looking for broader info but the post does start out talking about flags on SO, so maybe that is what's making me think that all of it applies to SO other than that last bullet point that's asking about the network entirely.
8:47 PM
has the auto-flag approval on comment flags changed? i don't recall flagging "Thanks!" being instant on the first flag

hmmm... I have a declined "unclear what you are asking" flag from april 2018 on meta.se. I can't see that option in the flag dialog... have question flags changed?
@FélixGagnon-Grenier How was your reputation then vs now? You can flag questions if you can't cast close votes yet...
I believe from the rep tab that it was mostly the same, maybe 20 points less. I can't cast close votes now either.
Also, oh hey y'all, it's nice seeing the avatars again ;)
bah, it's really unimportant, the question was closed anyway so no harm done :) I just don't understand how I emitted the flag.
.... and biiig fat shame on me. the flag options on closed questions are not the same as on opened questions. I followed the declined flag to the now closed question, which does not feature the usual close options, quite logically.

@FélixGagnon-Grenier Are you looking at a closed question, by any chance?
is it passive aggressive to paste the permalink of my previous comment? :)
