We're now rebooting one of our primary network switches. Any interruption is expected to be minimal.

Morning. Looks like something broken at work

Oops.

Did you find someone to yell at?

Naw. Previous shift is dealing with it
I'm trying to whatsapp information over a slow mobile linecause clearly I was a terrible person in a past life
Have i mentioned I hate WhatsApp?

I believe so... It's good for some things.
Hmm. I said I wasn't planning on staying up super late and somehow it's a quarter to four in the morning. Funny how that happens.

12:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek Did you watch Spolsky's video?

1:13 AM
No time :(
I'll ask for the link sat

SO tweeted it.

1:24 AM
I see it

Cool. Is there a way to save tweets without just retweeting them?
Oh, you can message it to yourself... that seems like a good option.

Errr
Would liking it work?

post it in chat. Then you have it even if it's later deleted.

1:45 AM
It's been posted in chat already.
I posted a link to it in the TL yesterday.

I find it highly confusing if you mark my flag as helpful but don't do what I ask for. I can handle a declined flag if you find it meh, don't worry about my feelings.

7:24 AM
@rene Moderators tend to mark flags raised in good faith but invalid for reasons the user couldn't have known as helpful regardless
Since a declined flag is essentially a small black mark against your account

This was on MSE @Magisch I have different expectations

Why?
The same principle would apply to MSE, wouldn't it?

Maybe.

Now I'm almost forced to include flag handling instructions for SE staff. Anyway, it is as it is. Let's move on. I'm not that obsessed about it.
As a mod I would have declined the flag in this case then. That is probably where my thinking is off.
Now let's really move on

@rene brews a cup of Americano for @rene

I take that

@rene You could run in the next SO election and handle flags the way you want to...

Just decline all of them and then watch MSO for 6 to 8 days ....

8:28 AM
Whew, so many chat messages ... AND WORKLOAD!
At last finished catching up last night's convo...

@SomewhatMemorableName Time to start another one!

8:57 AM
I've made an edit here because I considered it to be at least NSFW, but is it even more then that? As in, red flagable?

I remember a @codinghorror post about how storing stuff in webserver sessions is a bad idea, but I can't find it. Does anyone remember?

lmgfy ;p

@rene My delicate sensibilities would say that making jokes at the expense of someone asking is kinda rude? And I'm pretty sure this is a joke?

@rene Let's see. Even if the picture wasn't plainly uncouth, do you really need a mocking answer that suggest that the OP should "put a bag on his head" if he doesn't want to see the list?

9:08 AM
Putting bdsm imagery in a MSE post should probably not be done
Makes even less sense since this is a joke post to boot

Nope, the one I'm looking for was after a few months of Stack Overflow, when they stopped using sessions

so, "This is becoming a waste of my time and you won’t listen to my advice. What are the supposed benefits of making it so much more complex?” is ultra unwelcoming, telling someone to put a bag on his head (only.... worse) so he wont't see isn't?
seems quite evident it HAS to go to the trash can.

hmm. blah cannot google by time :(

can't vote to delete but I downvoted it
not sure it merits a r/a flag

I'm kinda torn on it
its... noise?

9:13 AM
yah

@Magisch flagged, custom moderator flag.

good luck waiting on that
I think some of them have taken a year to resolve in the past

Done my part. Not much I can do if there is no one on the other side of the help-line

I don't want to be told to put a bag over my head. I'm quite capable of deciding when to put on my bag without assistance. I usually wear the bag from Saturday lunchtime until Monday morning. It's uncomfortable in the hot weather, but it stops me getting suspended.

@MartinJames .... that's the quietest time on MSE typically ;p

9:16 AM
I could also probably vote to delete so to help community handled removal, but the poster does deserve an additional mod warning imho.

Y'know... the easiest way is to remove the BDSM reference. Yeah, 'censoring', whatever...

Do you have 20k on meta?

@SomewhatMemorableName But... then there wouldn't be an answer left? :P I thought you only edited stuff that was salvageable?

@JourneymanGeek Yeah - I should dump the bag and, instead, close all SO tabs.

@SomewhatMemorableName you "censor" it, he gets no downside. Next time, he will do that again. You need to remove that AND have someone tell him that the thing won't be tolerated again.
And "censoring".... the answer is just rude in the first place. The "boys be boys" attitude (look! I am grown up! I post adult stuff and adult jokes) is only the frosting of the problem.

9:20 AM
@Derpy more that if we delete it, its gone, and he loses the downvotes. If we don't its still there

@JourneymanGeek that's why having your posts deleted as r/a costs a 100 rep?

hm, I guess that works

Wasn't there just a big thing in the new CoC about how off topic sexual content (especially directed at another user, which this is, it's directed at the OP) is not ok?

also commented letting the user know its not ok
@Magisch I guess?

Sexual stuff not being allowed is already in the existing Be Nice.

9:23 AM
I think it gets a common sense "ewww"
an I think that's pretty NSFW anyway

I think it gets a common sense why the hell would you think anybody would want to have that image pop up at work

I agree it's a tasteless joke that went south pole with the explicit BDSM reference

The OP asked for a way to hide the HQ list.

With nothing really redeeming about it.
@Derpy if it was, IDK, a post it covering the HQ... would it be better?

9:25 AM
Joke answer in and of itself would be NAA but not red flag worthy
Joke answer with explicit sexual imagery (this is) is what I'm on the fence about

@Tinkeringbell I agree on that

actually screw it I'm just gonna flag as r/a maybe it'll get declined idc. This is too much discussion about a really flat joke

I could help flagging it as R/A...

I did that already ;)

@Magisch I usually go 'does this deserve 50 downvotes?' if it does, I flag :P
And yeah, I flagged 10 minutes ago ;)
I find it rude, if 5 other people do as well, that's a sign there's at least something wrong enough...

9:28 AM
@Tinkeringbell lol, for some reason I remember the R/A and spam flags work the same way, and forgot about the -100

So... total of 4 flags as of now, I think?

The reply basically said "wear a pair of black glasses so you don't see it". This alone is rude and not very "welcoming" (since that word comes up a lot lately). The fact the joke didn't just say "black glasses/paper bag) but had to add an "adult" reference (again, "look at me I can link adult stuff" attitude) only adds to the existing issue.
and gone.

and I (we?) hope the OP got their lesson.

I'm really lukewarm on joke-naa answers in the first place

It's not yet Friday in Iceland.

9:31 AM
@Magisch heh I do recall early meta was full of those tho
joke-naa answers that is

even we have that Spam Overflow question...
or SE haiku...

@Magisch As much as I like a good joke from time to time... I've noticed that it's a lot easier to appreciate a joke over the internet if you're not on the receiving end of it.
If you are, you get doubts, are they just joking? Is this good-natured? Or are they trying to belittle me? Is this laughing with me, or about me?

SE is not the place to be making jokes about people asking questions anyways

@Magisch Isn't it? :P

as I already said multiple times there is that subtle difference in laughing with someone and laughing at someone. This "joke" was of the second type.

I kinda suspect for some of us, one of the big causes of... well cognitive dissonance with how things are now is, we still have a mental image of SE as

@JourneymanGeek Oooh. I actually know a badly trained one-of-those in real life.
Manages to scare the crap out of me every time.

;p
the ones I've seen are dears
but yes, they probably could pull you along

This one barks. And actually did bite my umbrella once.
Has a history of abuse, I believe, but still. I don't feel safe when I see the owners are walking him

:(
No such thing as bad dogs, only bad owners
ya, the history of abuse would do that
and I'm sorry about that

@JourneymanGeek I'm... sorry about that too, but I somehow still feel a dog acting like that shouldn't be walked... not even only at 5:30AM or after midnight or something...

9:46 AM
@Tinkeringbell which would make things worse for the dog

First time I encountered the owners, the dog bit my umbrella and they were surprised that there was someone walking to the station at that time: 'Oh, we can usually walk him at this time, there's no-one around' :/

and the only alternative is putting it down

That's... kinda not fair to the dog; the dog needs walking. Not giving the dog what it needs is liable to make things worse.

and you can eventually help dogs like that
Just takes time

@Mithrandir The people live along the road to the station, those houses have pretty big yards.

9:47 AM
@Tinkeringbell dogs need a lot of walking

So it's not like the dog would lack excercise if it remained properly locked in the yard.

my small mutt takes between an hour or two

@Tinkeringbell Maybe the dog though you were about to assassinate it?

and walking outside gives them a chance to get used to people

ash isn't a small mutt :(

9:48 AM
@Magisch he is small. And totally a mutt <3
(cause mutts are the best dogs. ;p)

I'm not especially a dog person (my other is deathly allergic, so I try not to get near them often, and my father has dog phobia), but... dogs do have needs, such as a real walk/run.

(also rather fat)

Just... if this one ever manages to do so much as make a dent in me, I'm seriously considering filing something official... It's not against the dog, but it's also the owner's job to make sure they can control the dog

@Tinkeringbell ya, that's fine and within your rights

I cannot walk Bailey any distance ATM. It's too hot. Just going round the field behind us is too much, even with a drink from the cattle-trough at the far hedge.

9:51 AM
Of course, here everyone lets their dogs just run loose and they form packs. A couple kids have been bitten. :/ Owners just don't know how to take care of a dog safely.

I got bit by a dog once
In the dog's defense I reacted poorly to being greeted enthusiastically

I've never been bitten by a dog. My dad's been at least twice
But I'm really good with them and the owners and respect their space even when they're totally adorable
Actually lies
I got bitten by a dog once. ;p

We do have a problem with Bailey and smaller children. He will knock them over, given half a chance, in his enthusiasm for play. Yeah - he doesn't understand, but we have to restrain him:(

(Ash used to grab people's feet ;p)

@MartinJames What breed is bailey?

9:53 AM
@MartinJames heh, that's common with bigger puppies ;p

I think that the fact that a question as simple "We have a bug in our app, we need to check if the same bug is found in the code we had a week ago" can generate 5 different, contradicting answers on SO should tell enough
Clone the repo and do a checkout for the specific commit! No, don't do that, create an anonymous branch and then merge the specific commit on it! No, they are both crazy, you need to detach the head, do the hokey-pokey, insert the Konami code and then use git sellYourSoul!
Time the same thing would have required if we hadn't moved the repo to git just "because everyone uses it and they can't all be wrong" and kept the old TFS based one: 5 seconds?
Because... you know, you chose based on trends, not real benefits for your specific use case.
And whatever you do, don't dare to ever consider the possibility that switching to git would probably require git usage courses for your devs.
Yep, I am a little "angry" now.

@Derpy Huh? Why'd you get a training course if the necessary commands are on SO? :P
Did you manage to figure it out already? Or is it still broken...

12:28 PM
@Tinkeringbell simple: because no one want to "yep, you can try this command you found on stack but will be considered responsible of any damage it may cause"

@Derpy Are you afraid you'll do damage?

I use stuff from stack all the time I just make sure I understand it before using it

that is an option when you are doing "simple" stuff like this.

I wouldn't take module level complexity code 1:1 from stack
I dont trust anyone on stack that much

Now switch your needs to "I need to cherrypick this changes, push them to the other branch, commit some code, merge only some files to the original etc"

12:41 PM
@Derpy First step would be to make a fully copy of the entire repo setup and try on that

oh, yes, I know, but you will probably agree that adding the complication of switching your team to arbitrary-differe-source-control-model on a project that was late-on-schedule even before starting it.... all when your team doesn't know the new source control framework.... isn't exactly desirable.
Especially if the only reason to do so you provide is "all the world uses git"

@Derpy "ways to shoot your project progress in the foot: 101"

@Derpy Not true. I'm still stuck on subversion for the next two weeks :P
