8:02 PM
Hmm, that was 90ies I believe:
Great dancefloor piece though.
I'm gettin' old :P

The colors in the 80s were heinous... at least the blue jean fascination of the 90s didn't make my eyes bleed.

8:17 PM
But they started that fashion about having (from the start) holes in your jeans. That was always a bit of betraying for me, since every hole in my jeans was righteously gathered by wearing, not by buying.

That's one of those trends that just won't die.
... along with pre-faded jeans. I know I don't ever do any real "work" in my jeans but the tops of my thighs never fade that much more than everywhere else.

I always manage to fade them out. I am just a clothing scrooge it seems to turn out ...

Anyone know of any unmaintained features that are not mentioned in the bottom of my answer here?
It seems someone downvoted it immediately after I posted that link...why?

How can we know "why" someone downvoted? I'd suppose they've lost their keys and had a bad hair day :P

It seems unlikely that all the events in Tim Post's answer happen in just two seconds after I post a link here. ([temporarily un-ignores πάνταῥεῖ])

An old gem:
Apr 29 at 10:59, by Sonic Wizard
I figured out an interesting tactic: whenever suggesting an edit, make an obvious typo in any added text. Thus, it's likely to be approved faster because it's reviewed by just one user who Improves it and fixes the typo, as opposed to by two users. If it's not noticed and just approved, just suggest another edit to fix the typo, and then you earn double rep.

The bad hair day then ...

@Shog9 Is there anything to detect this abuse?

...

And yes, the speed of the review does sort of matter - if you hit the cap of 5 pending edits, a faster approval means you can suggest more edits in less time

8:31 PM
I'm struggling to see where abuse comes into this

If someone does this on a routine, repeated basis

I think he's talking about how posting links to things in here tenders immediate downvotes.

maybe this is just one of those days where I'm doomed to never quite wake up

I also figured out that if you have 4 pending edits and submit two suggested edits at the same time, you can bypass the limit and submit a sixth edit.

there are a bunch of odd behaviors related to that
there is simply zero throttling applied to edits

8:33 PM
@Shog9 Can you please handle my FR about changing the Organizer badge short description?

I don't really care that much. Let's see how much attention it gets

Q: How might we solve the 50 reputation comment limit?

Connor McCormickThe problem of sub 50 rep users being unable to comment is well documented Many sub 50 rep users have complained about the problem of not being able to comment under the limit. I am one of them. A small sample of these complaints can be found here, here, and here. The rationale for the 50 rep ...

I think you should answer that

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog lol, the old chestnut that is nearly as old as 'enforce comments on downvotes':(

8:37 PM
@MartinJames Maybe you should actually read the question
They make a good point.

Nah, they don't.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I was looking for it on SO meta to see if there was any other context around, but sure, I have not read it yet.

@πάνταῥεῖ Tell me exactly why. Better yet, post an answer there.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Oh, OK, it's on SE meta. Reading....

I mean... i don't disagree that it's a problem, i just don't see any adequate solutions.

8:39 PM
Just to speed up in answers, there's no good point into allowing link only answers though.

@KevinB The question is a discussion post asking for solutions.

And if these are referring to blog posts or such, they might be identified as spam.

They did not link to the blog.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog It's not a discussion... it's tagged .

@Catija There is no actual feature request there. I edited the tags.

8:47 PM
There's also no actual problem. I've seen that called comment restriction catch 22 or whatever.
There are probably more important things to solve.

No problem? Why not? Someone wanting to help but unable to request clarification seems like a problem to me.
2

Well, there is an implicit feature request: allow comments, but charge some small rep for posting them. OK, another posssible solution is presented, but that is the 'high development cost, no chance of implementation' solution that makes the cost of the'charge for commments' feature sound reasonable by comparison.

I don't really see it as that big of a problem. it is a problem, sure... but aren't there other problems that new users often have to deal with that are of a bigger magnitude?
like getting out of the question ban?

@MartinJames I asked them to post it as a separate answer rather than in the question.

or even better, not getting into it in the first place?

8:51 PM
@Catija It is a problem. Whether implementing some solution A or B is a good idea is a more complex consideration.

Perhaps a good stopgap would be to allow reviewers to convert answers into comments. Moderators can, and this point has been raised on MSO.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog NO.

Getting 50 rep points is already a such low barrier for anyone truly interested to attend at any site.

@Catija Don't raise your voice.

i mean... elevating a comment to an answer has its downsides too.

8:52 PM
It's also immediately overcome by hitting 200 anywhere.

@πάνταῥεῖ Considering it's more rep to remove most new user restrictions, upvote, talk in chat, etc...it seems like a lot.

By it being an actual answer, it's all of a sudden able to be downvoted as well as upvoted

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog That's almost sounding rude and exclusive. Stop that please!

But that doesn't mean that it's the only solution... it's the easy solution, to be sure. If there's a better one, why not at least talk about it?

@πάνταῥεῖ The proposer rebuts that, but I'm not convinced by their arguments. SE already 'discriminates' against English-as-second-language posters by its design as an English language site.

8:54 PM
And they would have more language-specific SO sites if it were feasible to do so... but it's very difficult for them to manage, so they're not.

@MartinJames There are language specific sites as an alternative. How should we solve that anyways?

That doesn't mean users should be shot down when they make a decent attempt to post in English.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog There are friendly editors to help out with such problems.

morning

8:56 PM
Stack Exchange is a great system, it would be very effective if most people using it were on the autism spectrum. Put it in the hands of neurotypicals, and it starts to go awry.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Oh, I can agree with that, sure. It's the assertion that less-than-optimal English skills are an argument for removing the comment limit that I have a problem with.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Please don't draw that joker again!

For instance, it's unnatural for many autists to say "please" and "thank you"...SE prefers that posts not have those.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I really don't think we need to go there.

It's almost like the arguments of Godwin's law.

8:58 PM
[ignores πάνταῥεῖ]

Nowadays, since we're all "inclusive" and friendly.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog As mentioned earlier: Do whatever you want

Hitler would have disagreed with lowering the comment rep limit, (maybe it'll work?')

erm
Morning

8:59 PM
Lo

Finding "Hitler" in your daily cereals isn't fun. I well understand @Journey

I'm not even out of bed yet!

Stop checking your phone while you're sleeping.

laptop lol

I mentioned Godwin's. That's seriously nothing well for a good morning.

9:01 PM
and I was checking the time!

To be frank, I haven't seen any data showing that <50 rep users tend to post bad comments, or graphs showing rep of a commenter vs. whether or not the comment is deleted.

@JourneymanGeek Carry on taking the tablets

@JourneymanGeek Don't worry, I've fallen asleep with my laptop in my hands many times before

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog the arguement for that might be that comments/clarifications are hard to use
and that even users with enough rep don't use it effectively

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog It requires access to the internal SEDE and I'm guessing that it's been so long since they were allowed, there's no value to what data there is.
That said, I can tell you that I'm pretty darn sure I delete more comments from 101 rep users on IPS than anything else.

9:03 PM
@Shog9 Can you please dig through the archives and pull out the data you guys used back in the day to justify setting the comment rep limit to 50?

for some reason I'm thinking the 50 rep limit has always been there

What we can have is an example of the kinds of comments people with less than 50 rep leave on their own questions/answers, or incorrectly as an answer

Also, I don't see any spam comments on MSE, where the limit is just 5

and it was one of those "Jeff thought its a good idea" things
2

it won't give you the spam sampling you're looking for, but it can give you an idea of the kind of quality you can expect
assuming the sampling includes the deleted ones

9:05 PM
@KevinB That can be unpleasant reading:(

Also, what to do about the bounty here?

What do you mean? There's nothing to do... it will just expire and no one will get it.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog are you kidding?

You know comments were added in early fall of '08?
I doubt there are any "archives"

9:09 PM
When was the 50-rep limit added?

Any discussion likely happened either on Skype or in blog comments, and both of those are long gone

@Shog9 I don't think he gets the early SE development model XD

@Shog9 No, he's playing spectrum neurotypical, as usual.

SE comment limits etc. were designed? Did the die get lost and the wet finger dry out?

There was... 1 employee. And I'm not sure that employee was getting paid.
you tend to not waste time writing detailed spec documents in that context

9:10 PM
So... not so much an "employee".

@πάνταῥεῖ Can we drop it from both sides, please.

Anyhow...both me and the kickstarter of the inclusion project happen to hail from the same city, so I hope we can meet together. We have a lot of things to talk about and a lot of ideas to come up with. Someday, we can go public, and talk about our concerns publicly, and people will listen to us without shooting us down. But that last part's just a fantasy.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog people are less likely to shoot you down if you earn their respect, just saying ;)

I am considering spectrum neurotypical myself as well. But that doesn't mean I need to live under a rock.

9:12 PM
I earned people's respect back in the Ano days.

erm. You edited things and got people curious

And even now, I'm one of the fastest rep earners here.

not the same ;)

You never can rest with any already earned laurels.

Respect isn't really about reputation though

9:13 PM
And speed doesn't matter at all, lasting does.

in this context its really being to engage with folks around you, constructively and being mindful of their needs too. Which lets you work out what and how to ask questions or suggest improvements to the system.
or disagree with current initiatives without annoying folks too much XD
(where necessary)

being [willing to/able to] engage?

With what? Real world problemz?

JG's message seems to be missing that.

9:28 PM
LOL
Forgive me father, for I have sinned.

i don't get it

There's not necessarily a connection to the ongoing posts.
Just funny stuff ;)

Feb 28 at 19:51, by Ano
@Catija Well, my neurotypical "emulator" is currently in beta, and does have some bugs, but it's much more stable than the early alpha builds. Unfortunately, it suffers from a critical bug where it sometimes crashes in areas of interests (such as this site); I'm currently trying to fix it.

@Catija errr.... Both in a sense

9:48 PM
Yeah, it wasn't so much an either/or... making sure I understood what you were intending.

Well, here's something more constructive:

Interesting... apparently using Gmail to create an account gives you a new default avatar... just a color block box with an initial.... that is new, right?

Did you not have an image associated with your Gmail account?
AFAIK, it pulls the image from Google - so if Google sends back a colored box...

I've never even seen sourcing my avatar from Google as an option.
But my default email is yahoo, not gmail.

it's only an option when you sign up with a Google account. If you add one later, you don't get the option.

10:01 PM
I don't think I've ever signed up with a google account, so that'd explain it.

10:26 PM
Speaking of signups...
Heads up: we're about to send an email out to about 120,000 users who *only* have an OpenID to login to Stack Exchange. We'll be removing OpenID support from our code entirely in 30 days. This is for .NET Core, testability, and our sanity.
Its the beginning of the end of the end of openID on SE :(

@JourneymanGeek "the end of the end of"

Yes
In the 'ee's got ee's feet nailed to the perch" level dead
not slightly dead, not mostly dead. Totally very much dead

Hmm... i think i'm one of those users

10:44 PM
might want to update then

So at MSO, the participation tab orders users by "Users most active on this site in the last 60 days (combined number of posts, votes, comments and edits)." Shouldn't votes in that context be, you know, upvotes, rather than the number of times you vote? If someone votes 10 times in one day, versus someone who posts a single +100 post in that day, the former user has "participated" more. I feel like whoever implemented this misread the "votes" context. There is already a tab for who is voting.
It seems kind of backwards at present.
@JourneymanGeek Never liked openID anyway. It was a fad.

@TravisJ heh, I found it useful for years

Too much abuse.

Ran my own endpoint for a bit ;p

10:57 PM
(see my point about abuse)

(actually had a semi good reason for it)

@TravisJ How does someone getting a +100 post in a day mean that they're more active than someone who uses 40 votes in a day... it takes more work to review and vote on 40 posts than to ask/answer one

To the Controversial Post post notice, maybe it's better if we added another sentence: "You may use votes ONLY to indicate the quality of this post."
> You may use comments ONLY to suggest improvements. You may use answers ONLY to provide a solution to the specific question asked above. Moderators will remove debates, arguments or opinions without notice.

meh
@TravisJ practically speaking, I understand the reasoning, but will miss the option of being able to manage your own SSO for SE

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog We don't tell people how to vote.
And there's no way to actually check that's the case or address it.
