hey, @Sonic - closing stuff like this is a waste of time. I specifically took the time to answer it after it got deleted again recently so that we had a record of it; if I'd wanted it deleted, I would've just deleted it.

There's a ton of history on MSE that is... Technically Stack Overflow (or Server Fault or Super User) history, but in a broader sense is network history - there's no good reason to shuffle it around and break all the cross-linking that currently exists.

What's scary about this are the unknowns. We really don't know what the impact will mean for us, or imgur, or other friends - we don't know what the outcome of the vote will be, or what the final legislation will look like. @Catija basically every "commercial" site would have to either a) get a license from another site to link to it without charge b) pay a tax on every "news" link (WTF does that mean!?) c) Every site on the internet would be required to implement some (as yet to be defined) copyright filter so that nothing copyrighted can be posted on their site unless they have a license (again... there goes all of user created content) and that's just the start of the horribad

Not really sure how that does anything. If you can't link to someone's site without having to pay for the privilege or get permission... the artists won't get any visibility to sell their stuff.

Q: How far should we go in disallowing 'impersonation' in profiles?

From this discussion (Official position on use of images on avatars), it seems a moderator suspended a user for violation of the ToS regarding 'impersonation'. That user linked to profiles of somebody else, and that isn't smart, I know. Part of that discussion was if you are allowed or not to us...

Yes. The profile was made 7 months ago, stating current STEM studying in NYC. However, the real person has been in China starting 7 months ago

The profile is copied verbatum from the admissions site where the picture was taken

I hope we're not right. I don't like people impersonating people.
