This just in: trying to badge-run for the Sportsmanship badge only to find that you have only 92 competing answers.

2:54 AM
"badge-run" "sportsmanship"
Letter, not spirt of the badge ;p

I guess people don't like competing with me...

FGITWing is a pretty good way to get Sportsmanship.

of course, you do have to actually come back and upvote the less-crappy answers that others spent time writing

Post crappy answers, wait for someone to post a better answer, upvote...

2:56 AM
People don't like running races with me because I'm Sonic, and I always outrun them.

oh wait
@YvetteColomb I wanted to skip mine. Parentals insisted cause my brother missed his cause reasons :(

My mom might miss my sister's middle school promotion because of an interview. No problem, she attended mine, and we went to the same middle school.

My brother didn't have one. ;p
And I erm

Didn't graduate from middle school?

actually am not that hot about the obsession with acedemics - its useful as a way to go "ok, this guy is smart enough to get a degree" but I learnt more from doing that schooling ;)
hah
TL :p

3:20 AM
hey, @Sonic - closing stuff like this is a waste of time. I specifically took the time to answer it after it got deleted again recently so that we had a record of it; if I'd wanted it deleted, I would've just deleted it.
There's a ton of history on MSE that is... Technically Stack Overflow (or Server Fault or Super User) history, but in a broader sense is network history - there's no good reason to shuffle it around and break all the cross-linking that currently exists.

3:38 AM
@Shog9 I wonder why you specifically pinged me and not the other four users who also voted to close.

You were the first in the list

@Shog9 Well, four other users were involved too; if they weren't, it wouldn't have been closed.

And the other four aren't ever in here?

@Catija Mods can super-ping.

Q: I'm changing the "not generally applicable" close reason here on Meta SE

Shog9This is a small administrative note. For the past 3 years and 11 months, we've had an off-topic reason defined here for use on questions that are only relevant to a specific site: This question pertains only to a specific site in the Stack Exchange Network. Questions on Meta Stack Exchange s...

3:40 AM
@Shog9 That question's topic is only applicable to SO
I stand by my close vote.

See, this is why I pinged you

@Shog9 Why? Because I'm one to take a stand on it?

Because, even after we previously discussed this, you still went out of your way to make more work for me

Not my fault others decided to close vote as well.

It's your fault that you voted to close
This isn't a firing squad thing where nobody kills the target because who can say which gun was loaded.

3:45 AM
lol

@Shog9 Don't forget that it's also those other users' faults that they voted to close.

which means nothing to you
you voted. AFTER I went out of my way to handle flags on the previous, out-of-date answers, clean up comments, write a contemporary answer explaining the recent deletion... You voted.

Well, that vaguely depends on whether you encouraged people to do that ...

@JourneymanGeek No, I didn't.
@Shog9 I only saw it because it was bumped

I mean there's a good reason I don't like to close stuff on meta that isn't super OT

3:49 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog which in no way compels you to close it
it's, what... 7 years old?

@Shog9 The close reason applied. Of course I'm compelled to close vote.

And just updated to answer recent questions about a recent event?

9 mins ago, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
@Shog9 That question's topic is only applicable to SO

Strictly-speaking, the question is only applicable to one specific question that now can't even be found.

@Shog9 One specific question on one specific site.

3:51 AM
I'm waiting for you to explain why this required you to waste my time
of which I have precious little to spare
I didn't have to update the answer there. I could've just deleted it. That would've made you happy and saved me time, right?
But I presumed that some folks would still want to know what happened to one of the most popular questions ever asked on any site anywhere on the network
So I took the time.
Is my rationale clear to you?

@Shog9 It was nice that you updated it, but the fact is that it's off-topic. Closure doesn't necessarily mean it should be deleted.
@Shog9 Yes.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog its a bit like how we have a omnibus question on SU for past april fool day pranks
Meta's also about the history of the site ._.

Ok. So, closing 7-year-old meta questions is already pretty borderline, but there are cases where that's useful: woefully out of date, misleading, pure noise...
But if someone's just taken the time to clean something up, and clearly has a specific purpose for it... That's a particularly bad time to go blindly enforcing rules.
Don't let pedanticism override practicality

Now you seem to have gone out of your way and reopened a similar question that got closed in 2012.

guess why

3:58 AM
You didn't do any other cleanups there...

it was crosslinked and a few votes away from being deleted

@Shog9 Why not also clear the votes by deleting and undeleting?

why?
reopen clears delete votes instantly

@Shog9 Evidence?
It's not mentioned in the FAQ.

I can see the votes and when they were deleted? I'm sure I've documented that somewhere. Search for "age delete votes user:811"

4:03 AM
@Shog9 Didn't find it. Closest I found was meta.stackexchange.com/questions/166329/…

A: Should we allow a mere 5 reopen votes to nullify any number of delete votes?

Shog9Bullet the blue sky First, some data: There are just over 3K questions that require more than the usual 3 votes to be deleted There are just under 1.5K questions that require at least 5 votes to be deleted There are 170+ questions that need at least 20 votes to be deleted There are 36K questio...

good, thanks

Ask a question search wins again.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog FAQ is built around reality, not the other way around ;)

4:34 AM
Hence frequently asked questions. Not once-in-a-while asked questions...
Also, morning...

4:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek I was editing your most recent answer for grammar, but I have no idea what your second paragraph means: meta.stackexchange.com/a/311150/377214
@SomewhatMemorableName Well, the SE definition of "FAQ" is the "what, how, and when" of how the network works. They are intended to be definitive sources on their topics.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog excellent

@JourneymanGeek Why is that?

Bits of it are intentionally nonsensical and for illustration purposes only
but the general idea is "don't post the exact same answer twice"
If you want to know what a frobulator is...

@JourneymanGeek I was scratching my head with that paragraph and almost didn't bother reading the rest of the answer

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog youtube.com/watch?v=RXJKdh1KZ0w
Its a reference to this
(spoiler - its mostly nonsense)

5:12 AM
That's not what I'm referring to. The way your paragraph is structured, I can't grasp the meaning of it.

hm
I do guess it jumps around ideas a bit
Take a look now?
Its too major a thing for edits IMO

Why can I view this with only 6.5k on stack overflow? stackoverflow.com/posts/79884/revisions

Don't know. I am viewing it with 101

It's a deleted post and I can view its revision history
The same does not work for other deleted posts
o_O

5:27 AM
How did you find out this?

@Magisch It was migrated to a different site. The history of deleted migration stubs is kept viewable due to CC licensing requirements.
May 30 at 22:29, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
Why are revision histories of deleted questions that were migrated to other sites publicly visible?
May 30 at 22:35, by Shog9
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog so that you can view who contributed to them
(cc @NogShine)

huh

Q: Why can I see the revision history of a deleted question?

Steven VI'm under 10k rep on Stack Overflow, so I can't see deleted content. I looked at this question from a meta post. When I visit the question page, I get the standard removed for moderation reasons message. But when I visit the revisions page for the post I'm able to see the revision history. When ...

huh... Shog went on reopen spree of questions closed as "Too Localized'... wonder why... Maybe to hint we can and should ask in MSE about specific high profile questions on other sites??

@ShadowWizard @ShadowWizard Thanks

@NogShine @NogShine np
@Nog oh, BTW, did you watch the latest Avengers movie? (Infinity War)
If not you should, you are there, and with a huge twist! :D

@ShadowWizard Because there is nothing localized now. Nearly every question posted to Meta Stack Exchange pertains to a specific site on the network. The problem can be explained by this site users without knowing specific site's issues.
@ShadowWizard No.
@ShadowWizard Sure. I have to catch up a bunch of movies before that.

@NogShine it's linked in several places, even in one of Shog's answers.
@NogShine so they should remove the "Belong to specific site" close reason if that's the case.

@ShadowWizard Oh.. Uncle Shog? O.O
Also the question is a support.
@ShadowWizard The emphasis is on only applicable to a specific site.

6:27 AM
@NogShine not really, the movie can totally stand on its own. E.g. I'm not familiar at all with the Scarlet Witch, yet her role in the movie was clear, I didn't need to have background on her to enjoy the movie. :)

@ShadowWizard her origin story in the MCU's fairly different anyway

@JourneymanGeek oh

MCU has no magneto

The old Tomalak? Now that sounds interesting! Oh, please tell us a story, uncle @Shog!
Could be a nice meme.... :D

@ShadowWizard heh
with respect to your politics question...
there's a lot of folks who still haven't forgiven japan for WW2
they did some pretty vile things - like use korean women as slaves
(and lol, someone linked it to me... off site, amusingly enough)

6:34 AM
How funny, @Shog9!

A: How do you search for other users on the "overflow" sites?

Shog9Search for other users, eh? Given the date, I assume you mean, "...for romantic purposes". Nudge nudge, wink wink... It's ok, you can admit it - everyone needs love sooner or later. However, I must caution you: angling for amour on SOFU is a game fraught with danger; sure, these sites might appe...

@JourneymanGeek yeah it was auto twitted at some point

I think more likely HNQed

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog he can be funny too, you know.... :D
@JourneymanGeek doesn't explain the "off site" you mentioned... :)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog That is 8 years old and clearly a joke

@ShadowWizard SE user
but there's a few spinoff chats

6:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek oh

either cause folks quit SE, or we wanted a non default public space to talk

This question could have been prevented if the moderator in question communicated to them the issue

@JourneymanGeek most of the lounge moved to discord

@Magisch well, its often not censorship
its more we're a close knit enough community that we sometimes talk about work or other things we'd rather not have on a public channel like this

@JourneymanGeek yeah, tons of comments explaining why Japan isn't neutral... I do know the history in general, but forgot the bits about Japan and North Korea, just remembered Japan helped the "bad guys" until being nuked.

6:38 AM
@ShadowWizard in asia, japan was the bad guys
In certain ways they were just as bad as, or worse than the Nazis

@JourneymanGeek well, they wouldn't have done anything on their own, or would they?

people in china are probably light on the forgiveness train considering what they endured

Probably would have

@JourneymanGeek so in a sense, WW2 saved Asia from being terrorized by Japan in the future?

@ShadowWizard in a sense

6:39 AM
I can fully understand why people in general are light on the forgiveness train about ww2, to say it was horrific would be a understatement

So... bit of politics here
Japan basically claimed they were saving asia from european oppression
but... they kind of invaded china, and korea, and the chinese and koreans were... miffed
then things like
Comfort women were women and girls forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army in occupied territories before and during World War II. The name "comfort women" is a translation of the Japanese ianfu (慰安婦), a euphemism for "prostitute(s)". Estimates vary as to how many women were involved, with numbers ranging from as low as 20,000 (by Japanese historian Ikuhiko Hata) to as high as 360,000 to 410,000 (by a Chinese scholar); the exact numbers are still being researched and debated. Most of the women were from occupied countries, including Korea, China, and the Philippines. Women were...
The Nanking Massacre was an episode of mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against the residents of Nanjing (Nanking), then the capital of the Republic of China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The massacre is also known as the Rape of Nanking or, using Pinyin romanization, the Nanjing Massacre or Rape of Nanjing. The massacre occurred over a period of six weeks starting on December 13, 1937, the day that the Japanese captured Nanjing. During this period, soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army murdered Chinese civilians and disarmed combatants who numbered an estimated 40...
The Sook Ching (simplified Chinese: 肃清; traditional Chinese: 肅清; pinyin: Sùqīng; Jyutping: suk1 cing1; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Siok-chheng, meaning "purge through cleansing") was a systematic purge of perceived hostile elements among the Chinese in Singapore by the Japanese military during the Japanese occupation of Singapore and Malaya, after the British colony surrendered on 15 February 1942 following the Battle of Singapore. The massacre took place from 18 February to 4 March 1942 at various places in the region. The operation was overseen by the Kempeitai secret police and subsequently extended to include...
and mengele?
Probably would have felt at home at unit 731
The americans basically dropped the nukes cause they'd probably have had to wade through the bodies of japanese and american soldiers to the gates of Tokyo otherwise
and here's the thing. They just... pretended a lot of that didn't happen
ugh
Removed the wiki link to unit 731. Its just... to damned disturbing
So more or less, they being better behaves these days... dosen't really make them the best place for something like this

7:09 AM
Electrician contractors from hell
They miswired the server room and our firewall and 2 servers fried

@JourneymanGeek heh, those are indeed horrible things that can't really be forgiven, I guess. To be honest, never learned about any of those in my history lessons back in school.

ya
Most history is local?
and well I suppose in Israel more on the war in europe than asia

@Magisch ouch. any survivors?
@JourneymanGeek but how you know all of this, and why? You're not local to Japan or Korea...
@JourneymanGeek oh, true.

@ShadowWizard My dad was born in india cause the Japs threatened to bomb sri lanka
and singapore kind of was the japanese HQ in the region...
and the local ethnic chinese suffered horribly
The Japanese Invasion's a big part of the whole "fortress singapore" mentality we have towards defence
No one's going to save our ass if we get invaded
so we need to be ready to kick the ass of anyone dumb enough to try

@ShadowWizard Electrical company is gonna look at compensatory damages

7:24 AM
so as kids, this is covered a lot

that was a 29k eur firewall

@JourneymanGeek I see.
@Magisch whoa.... lots of money!
Why did they mess with the server room electricity to begin with? What did they try to do? @Magisch

@ShadowWizard They rewired our entire building because the electrical wires were becoming dated
But they messed up hard and a bunch of stuff fried. Not just in the server room but in the server room was most damage
A couple of employees got zapped too

@Magisch wow, sounds like a huge lawsuit is upcoming.

I had some fun with a fried PSU yesterday to
if you count getting zapped by a short circuit as fun :P

At least it wasn't net outlet voltage that would have been pretty deadly considering we're all wearing conductive clothing and the floor is extra conductive to prevent static buildup

Were they private contractors, or part of some big company? @Magisch

bigger company in the area
I believe our bosses will settle for replacing all the equipment

7:30 AM
@Magisch by same bad company?? What's the point? They'll just fry it again.
Better get money from them, no?

@ShadowWizard no I mean they'll pay for all the replacements
they dont sell servers or pcs

@Magisch good... just don't let them touch anything in your building ever again... :)

@ShadowWizard I doubt the bosses will let them
One of the defective PSU's is oozing a thick brown fluid, time to dispose of it :P

7:47 AM
@Magisch Liquid cooled?

nah
probably exploded electrolytic condensators

cap-goop
^ that ;p

I'm not touching or smelling it to find out

capacitors
Nothing else in a PSU's liquid

w/e we'll write that one off

7:49 AM
How do those newfangled "fan-less" power supplies work?

lower heat production, bigger heatsinks, maybe throttling
potentially some reliance on case fans

I have two graphics cards inside my custom-built machine; will a 750-watt power supply be able to handle them properly?

Actually we narrowly avoided the real disaster yesterday

depends on the cards

GeForce 1070 and GeForce 1070 Ti

7:50 AM
But chances are, probably? I usually just throw what I have on a PSU capasity calculator

It fried the PSU of one of our big machines - the ones that are incredibly specialized calibrating equipment worth north of 1.5m eur

mismatched cards? that's unusual

if it had fried the mainboard you can't get that mainboard anymore

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog outervision.com/power-supply-calculator
throw your setup in there and see

I'm doing some stuff similar to @PrincessLuna with TensorFlow and neural networks

7:52 AM
I'm actually getting anxious just thinking about it
We have so much ridiculously expensive specialized testing and calibrating equipment

ah ok, that's a great reason
@Magisch some of which runs windows 95? ;p

@JourneymanGeek all the way down to flat out DOS

sounds about right

some of that stuff is invaluable - they're ridiculously accurate measuring equipment you can't get anymore
anything comparable will run you millions
these are all paid off and written off so using them is pure profit for the company right now

Do they use ECC memory?

7:56 AM
They could be using... EDO memory

I have no clue tbh
I just know I'm not allowed to touch those

or maybe SD ram... not even DDR1

We have a employee whose sole job is operating and maintaining these

I have a second desktop, my daily-use machine, which I got for very cheap ($350). It's a server machine.
Lenovo ThinkServer TS140

a lot of low end servers are desktop grade parts
and a lot of high end workstations are servers
ooh
if its the Xeon E3 model, looks like good fun

8:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yes, it is
Too bad it came with a paltry 280 watt power supply
(Just trying out some ASCII art I found online; it doesn't work because it strips off leading spaces on each line)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Cool

Q: What was the modification by the Community♦ here?

SarvabhoumaI was browsing some unanswered questions and found a question asked by Yogi. The question is in Page 58 if there are 30 questions in each page (as of today). Why ashvalayana ghriya sutra dictates that bones of cremated person should be buried When it is seen from questions page, it shows ...

Should I have asked it here?

@NogShine I think only if automatic, otherwise it should show the name of answer author.

apparently "trivial answer" comment conversion doesn't modify anything since the system prevents the answer to be posted in the first place; it's posted as if the user comments instead

Code hosting? Bah. We just hosted texts in code formatting...

@rene on the plus side, it has discounts

Also, what EU will do next?

Seems related to the discussion yesterday about SE talking about political things:

A: New EU copyright laws to be voted on 20th June 2018

Tim PostWhat's scary about this are the unknowns. We really don't know what the impact will mean for us, or imgur, or other friends - we don't know what the outcome of the vote will be, or what the final legislation will look like. We're, like many other US companies that cater to the world, bystanders ...

@Catija This will be hilariously bad if it passes
Like internet destroying bad, because it would mean that services must disable any user posted links universally

3:15 PM
I haven't really read anything on it but it sounds bad.

@Catija basically every "commercial" site would have to either a) get a license from another site to link to it without charge b) pay a tax on every "news" link (WTF does that mean!?) c) Every site on the internet would be required to implement some (as yet to be defined) copyright filter so that nothing copyrighted can be posted on their site unless they have a license (again... there goes all of user created content) and that's just the start of the horribad

Why does anyone think this is a good idea?

@Catija Because "SAVE THE ARTISTS FROM THE PIRATES!!!!!"

As someone from europe, if this passes I'll go protest in the streets

TL;DR; Hollywood and the copyright maximalists got their person in the right place... and are getting a nasty wishlist dream come true if it passes

3:22 PM
Not really sure how that does anything. If you can't link to someone's site without having to pay for the privilege or get permission... the artists won't get any visibility to sell their stuff.

@Magisch I suspect it will be more than just you

Ip law is already cancerous enough without bureaucrats legislating what they don't even begin to understand

@Catija Funny you mention that... spain passed something a few years ago similar, and immediately newssite readership plummeted

In the US, at least, "News" has always been fair use. There are rules for how much they can use but... ugh.

This is a blatant lobbyist cash grab by the traditional text publishers
they've been whining for years about how the internet is unfair competition

3:25 PM
@Magisch I don't think I've seen anyone in the software industry or internet industry support this.

If you have potential evidence, can you report a profile for impersonating somebody?

thats because its an insanely idiotic piece of textual diarrhea
nobody who is not a lobbyist or computer illiterate can even begin to support the very obvious suppression of free expression or freedom of information that comes from it

@SterlingArcher Actual impersonation? Or just using a similar/same name? I think it relates to what Shog mentioned to Community yesterday... or Nog Shine... as long as they're not actually trying to pass themselves off as those people, it's OK...
@Magisch So why does it seem to be getting enough traction to be considered.

The only problem is it could be entirely circumstantial. But name, schooling info, and personal picture

because this is the EU parliament and major text publishers really want them to legislate into existance a new business model for their failing selves

3:28 PM
I'm hesitant because this person could very well be who they say, but some gathered info has me on the fence

If this piece of crap legislation actually stifles the internet that I've come to love and that has enabled me to know so much I might actually become an activist and go annoy the MP's

@SterlingArcher Just curious (really, not attacking or anything), what's the action you hope if you report it?

If it's not them, I'd just like to see the personal information of this person removed is all

we have... this meta post?

Q: How far should we go in disallowing 'impersonation' in profiles?

Patrick HofmanFrom this discussion (Official position on use of images on avatars), it seems a moderator suspended a user for violation of the ToS regarding 'impersonation'. That user linked to profiles of somebody else, and that isn't smart, I know. Part of that discussion was if you are allowed or not to us...

> Filling out your public profile as if you were that person is usually a step too far.
I agree with that

3:33 PM
while you are at it, kill this one too

Oh, it's been accused now

huh... realtime drama?

chat.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/42899249#42899249 @Shog9 if you have a moment, we believe this account may need a glance of attention

Is there reason to think she's not that person?

Yes. The profile was made 7 months ago, stating current STEM studying in NYC. However, the real person has been in China starting 7 months ago
The profile is copied verbatum from the admissions site where the picture was taken
I hope we're not right. I don't like people impersonating people.
> they made this account like right when that page was made too
account is 7 months old
that page is from late October
so it's def a lie, you can't switch to NYU that fast after being in an SLU article as an admissions Ambassador
