6:01 PM
Seriously. What could be done to fasten that bureaucratic process, without loosing reliability?

I am the senate

And how's that relevant?
I am the plebeian tribune
I'm open for all proposals to enhance the new users experience, and SE business model as such.
(without these paid services like Teams)

Are jokes ever relevant?

Of course they are.
Otherwise there wouldn't be a joke (punch line).

6:27 PM
@Shog9 Not to mention Triage queues at Stack Overflow. But that needs some experienced doctor's assistants already committed and lurking there.

My bank is actually remarkably to the point
they've never annoyed me past what was strictly necessary. I consider that truly welcoming. No fluff

Cool!
No chit chat is even mentioned in the tour.
Coffee is only available at chat.
No thanks smokey, I'd only do more stupid things, even more faster.

@Shog9 it would actually hurt the user more to leave them

mmm-hmm

@Mgetz You know what's the recommended way how to remove a band aid?
A short sharp shock is preferable to endless frustration and agony IMO.
Nurses are quite straightforward about that :3

6:36 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ My mother is a registered nurse...

;)
So you know what I mean.

@πάνταῥεῖ Perform any task that requires the band-aid to stay on.

I had some cases when a bandage really needed to be removed from a wound slowly and with the help of hydrogen peroxide. But these were really rare.

honestly these days I prefer to just apply pressure and let cuts seal themselves, or if I'm in a hurry I'll use superglue

Well, there's stuff like spray-on bandage since the 80ies of the last century :-P
Superglue is poison (contains cyanides)
@MartinJames Did you mean requires to put another one after?

6:45 PM
@YvetteColomb You had exams a while back; how did those go?
@Shog9 Can you also please tag the MSO cross-site dupe as completed? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/288734/…

I did want to discuss with @Shog. But I have a feeling he's just collecting more opinions.

@πάνταῥεῖ on MSE?

Here @Catija

The thing I don't like about moderation purely by SE employees is almost no moderator actions on weekends and holidays

That's not that much better with regulars anyways

6:49 PM
Not one SE employee is passionate enough to moderate MSE during their spare time.

"Passionate" vs "smart"... they have lives away from the site. It's not really about passion.

Most of the SE regulars are volunteering because of compassion (not to say addiction)
And we've even been accused not being compassionate enough :-P

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog patience

@πάνταῥεῖ "here" is MSE?... unless you mean chat mods?

I didn't mean to ask a question regarding that at MSE. I am aware that "here" is MSE realm.
(As being still excluded from all others :-P)

6:54 PM
AFAICT the only road-block to appointing moderators on MSE is the fact that they'll gain access to private chat rooms that are intended only for staff. There have been plans to appoint moderators ever since April 2014, when the site split from MSO
Is that right @Shog9?

No, that's not a roadblock

How do you think this chat functioned before the split when MSO had non-employee moderators? ;)

Another, hidden access level where only users with the staff bit could access the chat rooms?

Bingo.

6:56 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ Maybe you didn't catch what I was responding to... you said that we need more mods, so I was asking whether you meant on MSE (since it's just the CMs/staff) or if you were talking about somewhere else.

@AdamLear wait, you mean @Shog9 actually works here and doesn't just hang out in our secret rooms because he found them?

@AdamLear Can you tell me what the roadblock is, then?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I have a sneaky suspicion that extra bit is called slack/discord whatever

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog No idea, I haven't thought about mods on MSE in years.

The last announcement was made in 2015, and since then, no action.

6:57 PM
We've talked about it in here within the last year.

Not on the site.

@Catija Ah, yes. I was just reading that from the line. What I meant was we need moar site mods.

@Mgetz Hangouts?

@Catija I'm sorry, you have my condolences.
Hangouts is a horrible tool for enterprise collaboration

I don't have to use them. :P

6:58 PM
@AdamLear And that's why users here who aren't moderators but are staff can access those rooms?

Apparently, though, if you have an enterprise account with them, you can have up to 25 people talking at once... that's got to be magical.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Yep, being a moderator isn't a prerequisite for accessing internal rooms.

@Catija it's not you still can't draw on people's screens
Enterprise slack allows that though

@AdamLear Why is the fact that a user talked in an internal room made public? e.g. "talked 1 minute ago" but in their chat profile their last message was a few years ago

@tinkertim Less hurt at removal?

7:00 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog hell if I know

@Mgetz That was sarcasm... I'm thinking of the 12 talking heads on a news show at the same time thing... seems problematic.

Fun fact: many autistic users wouldn't really mind a lot of the quirks of SE sites that neurotypicals often complain about.
For instance, I struggled (and still sometimes struggle) with saying "thank you".

@Catija Well, it seems to be hard to get even 7 heads together consciously. But nevermind :3

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog because the "last message" is denormalized on the profile (so it's a single per-user field), and we never felt that it's a real issue

7:05 PM
Being impersonal and fact-oriented is something that both SE sites and I personally excel at.

@πάνταῥεῖ Not if you're a hydra! :P

@πάνταῥεῖ whomever mixed this really understood stereo

@Catija What did you think about the cheesecake with cookie crust I mentioned earlier?

7:09 PM
@Mgetz I am a fan of quadrophonics :3

@πάνταῥεῖ I'm a fan of sound engineers that understand their medium extremely well. It seems like a lost art these days

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I might have missed it...

yesterday, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
@Catija So my sister decided to try making something new: cheesecake with chocolate chip cookie crust.

Example of really good sound engineering: youtu.be/gp5JCrSXkJY

@Mgetz I've been working with MPEG2 standards a while. Yes, that's a decaying art.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Say that fast 3 times.

7:12 PM
yesterday, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
(Try saying that out loud five times fast)
I already did

Oh. 5 times, yes.
It's not all of us suffering from Alzheimer's here :3

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Sounds good:) Last week, I discovered soft-scoop vanilla ice-creams with mango chutney and lime pickle. May be my favourite dessert ever, (esp. after a turbo magmaloo:).

I'm missing the choklit sauce :-P
And smarties topping ...
Well, one of the recent main threads here was about enhancement of new SE users experience. Are there any serious ideas or proposals?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Traditional or no-bake? I know I made those no-bake cheesecakes a few weeks ago but it's not generally my preference. I hope they were good. :)

@Catija Traditional. Just put chocolate chip cookie dough on the bottom, and your usual cheesecake stuff on the top.
And then bake it.

7:18 PM
Ah, yeah, I've never made one of those.

@Catija Crumbled cookies for the cake bottoms was one of the really great inventions made at the last century. Yeah!

@πάνταῥεῖ Isn't that still popular with DVDs?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Depends a bit of what end devices are capable of.
These come with some terribly broken software and codecs sometimes. Depends on what the consumer is willing to invest.
And what the backend emits of course.

@πάνταῥεῖ aren't a lot of SOCs getting MP4 and the newer compression codecs?

@Mgetz Sure they are. It's still a question of cost though it seems.

7:27 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ Licensing fees will do that. I wonder how much bandwidth MPEG has wasted because of their fees

I'm outta that business though. May others make a "deal" with it ;-)
One of the worse ideas:
-3
Q: For better quality: Block early answers

ccornThis is a feature request that addresses the problem (at least on Math.SE) that low-quality questions are often quick-shot answered while the closing votes are still piling up. This often makes several quality problems out of one, given that there has been so little time for composing an answer. ...

@Mgetz "Wasting bandwidth" doesn't seem to be a bad quality smell nowadays anymore. It's rather considered micro optimization :-/

@πάνταῥεῖ Happy faces favor fewer packets delivered more consistently

Sure. Less noise seen at WireShark ;-)

Unfortunately I'm out of votes because I've been badge-running

So just don't do such silly things

user392480
7:40 PM
hey guys!

user392480
community here!

You're missing the gals BTW. Don't be impolite please!

user392480
I am a Community user. How's ya day goin?

@JonEricson As you just passed by here. Do you have some ideas how to improve a (lost) new users experience without being straightforward or sounding unwelcoming?

7:46 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ I do. I'm writing a thing based on data I've been analyzing for a few days.

@CommunityNoDiamond. Well, it ended up with a 400 HTTP bad request accessing the PayPal API. I'll investigate further about that tomorrow, and probably add more debugging capabilities to my Soap interfacing.
Cool @Jon. I'm anxious to see your results.
@CommunityNoDiamond. That's nothing really able to spoil my day. I just know I'll have to do some interesting work tomorrow. All just fine ;)

user392480
Me too. Furthermore, I want to salvage this question I asked a long time ago.

It's a deleted question, no one can see without +10k rep at Stack Overflow.
Mind to provide a screenshot?
May be we can help to improve it.

user392480
I am requesting that to be put back. Just look at my revision history and see how incomplete the first version is. I already handed in a custom mod flag for that question.

8:01 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ ugg.. paypal API... I'm sorry

@Mgetz Just one of my side step war spots. Daily bread 'n butter stuff. :3

user392480

user392480
That is the final form. I revised it but could not revive it.

user392480
The negative three is the initial wave of downvotes when my question was incomplete. I did not know that I could not draft my question and then edit it later at that time.

@Mgetz I gotta do that with Delphi, which is sometimes feeling like throwing bananas in response to grenades.

user392480
8:05 PM
(To be sure I am Oighea in SO, "Community no diamond" is a crude imitation of Community)

@πάνταῥεῖ at least it's not salesforce apex

@CommunityNoDiamond. What makes you uncomfortable about the dupe? Can't you explain that more with your question?

user392480
The canonical question it redirects is much broader. My solution is very specific, not using third-party tools and only using gif

user392480
And that I need to revive it with votes reset.

Maybe, that's one of the cases you should ask again (more clear and with references), instead of editing your question.

user392480
8:11 PM
Sorry about that. But I am requesting disassociation with this post.

Why? Question banned?

user392480
I am not question banned. I have two good dupes. I just felt that this question should come back but just as a redirect link and without my name

user392480
In case if I can't adequately find a solution.

You can ask questions, and refer to possible dupes you know, and you can clearly explain why these don't solve your problem, no?
What's the actual problem?

user392480
Sure. I will be more liberal with the use of search. So hopefully I won't unexpectedly get my question duped.

user392480
8:17 PM
Additionally, is it okay to ask for other users to pre-approve my answer so it is of high quality and it is not a dupe?

Sometimes you'll experience questions duped, even if you referred to these dupes already. That probably means some users did't read to the end, or didn't really recognize well, what's the actual difference with your particular problem.
Tough stuff to make that finally clear, but not impossible at all.
I hope your appearance here is beyond that particular concern @CommunityNoDiamond.

user392480
that (votes are recorded) stuff is totally different.

How so? It says what it says.

Q: Help page for automatic deletion doesn't explain the rationale for deleting those questions, neither does it explain how to get them undeleted

Sonic the Inclusive HedgehogWhen users come across their own question that was automatically deleted, they are given a link to the help page on what criteria cause a question to be deleted by the Community user. However, that page is rather matter-of-fact, just explaining the criteria for automatic deletion. That page doesn...

^Yes, that's relevant.
And @shog9 answered and improved that.

8:28 PM
@CommunityNoDiamond. It's also worth noting that even if you successfully get a Roomba'd question undeleted, if it hasn't been fixed so that the deletion criteria no longer apply, it will be immediately re-deleted.
Also:

user392480
Sure. I will ask the staff to request that the votes to be reset and that this post to be disassociated.

user392480
I wonder how long the wait time is for disassociation requests?

@CommunityNoDiamond. You can't ask for votes to be reset.

user392480
Resetting votes is completely impossible. The best way is to post a new edited questio.

@CommunityNoDiamond. According to Shog here, in many cases it's just better to post a new question:
1
A: What should I do if I find the answer to an old question of mine that was automatically deleted as abandoned?

Shog9Monica's advice on fixing the question is solid - anything you can do to correct whatever caused it to not get the necessary attention the first time around is worth doing. In particular, take this opportunity to add what you've learned in the time since you first asked. But then... Just re-as...

user392480
8:32 PM
Thanks.

Although it's not something I'd recommend. Some people will remember your old post and downvote it.

@community Well, the 1st rule is: Be nice! No matter how greasy that might look realizing the final conclusion. This is my today's t-shirt: — πάντα ῥεῖ 1 min ago
@CommunityNoDiamond. That's what I mentioned (recommended)

user392480
Okay thanks.

You're welcome. It seems you are still a bit new to all of these rules and bureaucracy ;)
@Jon @Shog9 We urgently need more transparency regarding that kinda stuff!
Invest on AI about detecting _off-topic_ and _duplicate_ questions, and support mods with the outputs.
I believe my personal decision patterns and conclusions based on experience are still quite simple (minded).

9:06 PM
Find out how we can take advantage of the benefits of #AI in judicial decision making #ArtificialIntelligence https://thght.works/2HDiJeE
SD is a bunch of if() statements :-P
Sorry for that @balpha!

nah, it's your fault, @πάνταῥεῖ

@Mithrandir You probably didn't understand what I was trying to point out ;-)
And sure, it's my fault and everyone else's.
We could blame @NickCraver as well. Not to mention their considerations done at their daily shower :3
Sorting, Pffff ...

9:28 PM
Have we ever had a case where a user starts gaining rep by making benign posts to gain community trust, and then start spamming or trolling?

The Holocaust troll on Skeptics is known to do that at times.

10:23 PM
Most SE sites still recommend to comment along about downvotes. Is that really encouraged still nowadays?

Only if you can do it while still being nice and helpful
which is nigh impossible

At least that recommendation is specifically popped up for lower rep users. That sounds quite counterproductive for me.
Should be overthought.

where?

everywhere

Most of the ones i see seem to suggest commenting to request clarification or to point out mistakes, and downvote things that are wrong or the worst of the worst etc
Nothing here suggests commenting on downvotes: stackoverflow.com/help/privileges/vote-down

10:30 PM
That suggestion is wrong!

?

It pops up every time. Try with a lower rep sock.

but you said it's stated everywhere

That's the way life is.

i don't see it stated anywhere

10:31 PM
@KevinB Again, try with lower rep and you'll see that.

too lazy
got a screencap ?

Seems to happen at "initial downvotes" at least. I'll notice you if I'm spotting it again.

@πάνταῥεῖ <2k users are shown a message when downvoting.
The above one.

yeah, i get that one on MSE

Q: Is http://idownvotedbecau.se counter productive? Can it be better used?

Journeyman GeekNow, I realize that in a sense it helps meet a certain common demand, that folks explain downvotes. It's an excellent resource. It explains very well how a post can be improved. On the other hand, I think a bare link to it is off-putting because: As an experienced user, I feel there's often a ...

@Sonic Yes, that was what I'm referring about.

i mean... it's not suggesting that the user not downvote, or explain their downvote, at least not directly

I am ignoring it just now. But I am an experienced user at SE, no matter which site. For newer users that might lead to counter productive actions.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I thought that Worldbuilding did but I could be wrong...

10:46 PM
I don't know that that page would even be updated.
I know one of them does.

Worldbuilding still needs 5 rep, just looked with a sock.

@Catija Which page? The privilege pages are loaded live from the system.

CodeGolf.SE only needs 1 rep to post on meta.

Q: Reputation requirements compared

badpHow do reputation requirements for various privileges compare on Stack Overflow vs a graduated Stack Exchange 2.0 site vs a site in public or private beta? Return to FAQ Index

10:48 PM
(having a low-rep sock is useful)

"To participate in MathOverflow Meta or Programming Puzzles & Code Golf Meta, you only need 1 reputation."
@Catija Also don't forget that on all sites, <5 rep users can ask about their own posts

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog So... if the FAQ already answers your question...
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Posting an answer on an existing meta post isn't, though... which is what my answer is talking about.

user310756
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog they went well, very glad they're over. I've finished my masters degree. Thanks for remembering :)

@YvetteColomb Congratulations! When was your commencement?

user310756

user310756
10:59 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog commencement?

@YvetteColomb Graduation ceremony...we Americans tend to refer to it as "commencement"

user310756
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog ah, August, I never attend. It's my 3rd post grad qual and I'm sufficiently introverted to not attend

user310756
so I grad in absentia or something a other

My dad completed an online master's degree from Georgia Tech; he was given an invitation to fly to Atlanta to attend the ceremony along with the on-campus graduates; he declined it

user310756
11:02 PM
yeh I can relate :)

user310756
there's a number of places I can go to graduate. I just wait for the certificate to come in the mail

Yeah, they just sent the degree by mail

user310756
what did he study?

user310756
nice

user310756
11:05 PM
yeh all my study has been online.

user310756
software des and dev specialisation

11:43 PM
@YvetteColomb So let me congratulate in "absentia" ;-)
