Next time flag it, then I have a trail of the request to edit it. (so many things make it to meta)

hey
1:56 AM
ugh morning
Recently I always had a nightmare regarding interaction on Stack Exchange sites...

Sounds like a good time for an SE vacation. :P

hey
6:46 AM
I just realized the "text ad" meta post was also downvoted to (not yet) oblivion... last time I saw (just a moment after it posted), it was positive...

I'm still a little sad because "sponsoring that fine manual" sounds kind of cute

hey
FWIW, I'll support the notion of text ads. Consider it a pinned comment to a (hopefully) useful reference.

I think the main problem with the reception was that it seems like a lot of tutorial request questions would get answers in the form of an ad banner.

hey
Well, closed questions shouldn't show ads then

If they can tune the algo such that the user about to post tutorial requests gets a relevant ad instead and doesn't go on to pollute our site then I say more power to them

6:55 AM
I am all for the idea of content generated ads though...
Aug 1 '17 at 21:43, by Travis J
What if SO (this would work with other exchanges on the network as well) partnered with Amazon to show an advertisement for a book on Amazon with every question, where the book was the first result of tags.Join(" ") + title? This may have a decent amount of throughput.

hey
But I have to add that good ads should only be shown on good posts.

o.O
I wont take full credit for the idea, but... ;)

hey
I just received an email from SO for "Terms of Service and Privacy"! \o/

(checks email)
No ToS stuff, I am guessing you manually opted out?
Just a video on how to "Build an API with Node.js, AWS Lambda, and Couchbase with Nic Raboy"!

hey
I did opt-out 2 weeks ago and already got the reply, but just now the expected email came.
(username censored, though it's my username on SO anyway. Also, content was cut since it's similar to the latest blog post)

7:09 AM
Meh, I don't intend on suing or being wronged by SO. Not worth the effort.

hey
Meh indeed... I don't even understand what's going on, and I just opted-out since some said that there's no disadvantages by doing that...

I generally try to focus on things which I can improve, as opposed to things which could, under the right circumstances, with these taro cards being just so, impact me in some (roll 100 sided die) way.

I mean, from a wtf is happening in the world point of view, I am far more concerned about the social implications of punishing people with face recognizing cameras.
China's system is absolutely terrifying.

hey
I... heard Japan also doing that, but that controversial/doubtful Q&A on Travel.SE was gone... ah, found it

7:15 AM
@hey they sent it to everyone, not related to opting out

hey
@ShadowWizard I think I made some misunderstandings with my sentence... by "expected email", I meant the email that Tim has promised to send to everyone ._.

@hey oh. Well, 2 weeks is really really, but REALLY fast.
Pretty sure there are things he (and other CMs, not just Tim personally) told "We'll do that soon" years ago and.... nada. Too lazy to find them though.
@TravisJ why? If the population is fine with their government knowing where they are and what they do at any time, what's wrong with that?

@ShadowWizard Yeah, in theory that's a good idea. In practice, it means that the Government can remove points from your social score for criticizing their actions, stifling the free press and freedom of speech.
Without a good score, you may find yourself unable to own a vehicle, use public transportation, purchase plane tickets, own land, or get a job.
Oh, and that isn't theory. That is already happening in China.
It gives an awful lot of power to those in Government with access to influencing social scores.

7:30 AM
This social score is some straight up 1984 crap
china needs to go away with that crap

agree
The crazy thing though, is that Government loves it. I think Florida might start widespread use of it too.
Insanity

@TravisJ Of course it does
It's the perfect societal control tool

Ugh, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times

Who sets the criteria for the social score? The government does. So it's easy to apply a lot of social pressure to conform to certain ideologies this way.
And you can even lump it in with legitimately degenerate behavior to legitimise it
Suddenly you can say anyone who is against that "supports criminals and deviants" and there you have it. You have a perfect excuse to implement your tool for total control

Yeah. All that. Terrifying.
Makes SE ToS seem like trying to fit the square block in the star hole.

7:35 AM
If I was in government and unscrupulous about wanting to control people this would be my dream system

hey
It always reminded my of Sibyl System and Psycho-Pass...

(googling)
There are certainly a lot of similarities

Ok, since you folk are already arguing....

arguing? We were metaing :P

ToS updates - May, 23

hey
7:48 AM
@Derpy I hope you have received the email

Received mail pointing to new ToS. Obviously it makes no mention of the arbitration thing, like some already noticed. Yep, it is predictable, they are no charity blah blah blah. I still don't like this since they knew that was a big point of the ToS that already caused so much uproar
The ToS was update again. The mail for the opt out thing is indeed TEAM@.....
Yep, it seems Tim was wrong yesterday.
so, if you have already sent a mail to legal@.... you may want to send another one to the right address.

I sent one to team@ early on and recieved a reply so I guess I'm in the clear
Also I don't care enough to send another one

@TravisJ true, but yet again - if the population is fine with dictatorship, why change it?
If majority of the people prefer dictatorship, it's becomes democracy, actually.

8:04 AM
The text ad post makes me irrationally sad for some reason
The title is so adorable but it's downvoted

@ShadowWizard And what happens when the majority no longer wants dictatorship?

@user5389107 Well, I can see why users are calling them "paid link only answers" but I guess the company has to eat too.

@TravisJ then they need external help
(usually)

hey
ooo!

Am I missing something here?
So... when mods suddenly get decently good at handling "obsolete" flags, well-meaning folks whose requests for clarification go heard are no longer able to post these comments in the required amount? I've seen no advice so far telling people to pay attention to the clarification requests they're making - and race the moderators to delete them faster once they're done with their job. You really shouldn't be punishing people for having their comments deleted when deleting useful comments as soon as the recipient reads them. is the recommended course of action for moderators... — John Dvorak 2 mins ago

user310756
@Catija @JourneymanGeek are you (as ROs) ok with a weekly foal?

hey
I'm an idiot. I can't read.
to be honest, I'd like to start daily cat/dog picture...

@user3956566 I suspect foal play!

8:37 AM
@user3956566 (almost) anything goes here ...

Speaking of ToS... Will I get an SE-branded email just before my 30-day window to opt out from arbitration begins, or do I have to monitor MSE or opt out of arbitration before it comes into effect?

Probably the latter
It wouldn't really make sense for them to give extra warning about it

hey
or... just opt-out now...

I would expect them to be legally obligated to let me know that I have the unique chance to opt out of their special treatment of law unto me.

Isn't that covered by the TOS change email?

hey
8:45 AM
@JohnDvorak fair point,
54 mins ago, by Derpy
Received mail pointing to new ToS. Obviously it makes no mention of the arbitration thing, like some already noticed. Yep, it is predictable, they are no charity blah blah blah. I still don't like this since they knew that was a big point of the ToS that already caused so much uproar

"and also including such provisions in any modifications we make to these Public Network Terms after the date of your first acceptance." That's a bit sketchy

OK... apparently my phone - powered by an OS by Google and running an email app by Google - suddenly stopped monitoring my Google-branded email inbox, about a month ago. What was the point of having it preinstalled on my phone in that case?

hey
Inbox? If it got bundled...

Anyways... the email I sent through the contact form apparently did count as an opt-out.

@JohnDvorak I know, I know. I am fairly deluded too. I like the network, but I can't say I am enthusiast about how all of this is being managed.
@JohnDvorak Also I think that the 30 day window has already started ticking the second the legal hub went up. Or, in the most optimistic hypothesis, when they sent you the notification mail / when you saw the disclaimer footer on the site for the first time.

9:00 AM
Disclaimer footer? What disclaimer footer? Even if I do scroll past the infinitely-scrolling front page, I can see nothing about arbitration or GDPR. Just "we made our own logo and the rest of our content is CC3-BY-SA-BY" or something.

Oh, that thing.

> your use of blah blah blah is subject to blah blah blah

If I tell the court that I never saw this blurb because of a malfunctioning browser extension / using IE8 / uBlock misconfiguration, does this cover my donkey when I'm trying to opt-out more than 30 days after this thing supposedly appeared?

I seem to remember you too live in Europe? If that is the case, the thing is probably already invalid for you in the first place.
I will probably still opt out just to be sure.

9:08 AM
I do.

...And to add a nice +1 to the the "How much our userbase hated our idea" graph I hope someone will get in 6-8 time units.

I'm pretty sure they won't tell us...

1 hour later…
10:18 AM
@user3956566 I'm not sure why anyone would object

user310756
@JourneymanGeek the site's an evolving landscape. I was being respectful of the ROs.. speaking of which, when are you going to start helping to pin the daily pets? rolling eyes and sighing

@user3956566 I'm on chat a lot less XD
(I kinda just spent the last day sleeping off the last two nightshifts)

user310756
@JourneymanGeek me too D how's the match making?

user310756
@JourneymanGeek ah k

@user3956566 .... not moving apparently
I've not actually heard anything yet

user310756
10:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek :/ oh well, all good things come to those who wait?

lol
I hope.
With a good.many.things ;)

user310756
yep i think so :D. anyway I have to go. uni exams in less than 2 weeks and a foal due soooon. I'll post a pic when s'he is born

hah, you do that
I think everyone is waiting for that little fella

Anyone else here who has lots of exposure to GDPR?

continuing my tradition of linking the soundtrack that plays in my head

@user5389107 got a couple of ToS update emails, why?

user310756

@JohnDvorak Am I correct in my assumption that in Business to Business contacts I'll need to have our Salespeople let potential customers sign a privacy notice when they hand over business cards?

user310756
I do appreciate the sentiment, but object to how our country is treated under copyright laws with a view to media access to music, films, shows

user310756
11:07 AM
Most Aussies are btw

@user3956566 I object to how copyright law has destroyed music creation

user310756
@Mgetz I object how record companies fleece musicians and to the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow

@user3956566 I can't speak to the latter but agree with the former

user310756
@Mgetz yes, that was why Prince became the artist formerly known as Prince

12:19 PM
OK, now I've got a ToS update email...

hey
it's not... caching?

that email is going to a bazillion people, they can't all be sent out at once

@hey I assume the delivery order is based on the secret "user annoyance level" param. That would explain why I got the mail before the owl. I must clearly be considered a greater menace ^_^'

... how up on the rank am I?

@JohnDvorak I don't know. All depends around how they feel about being sued by Hasbro (and escaping a mob of Muffin fans) VS surviving a raging parliament of owls (see: Birdemics)

12:39 PM
@balpha You're running into the same "How do I deliver 10.000.000 legitimate emails?" problem?
y'all might wanna reach out to some email providers - SE is commonly classified as spam by my email provider

what provider is that?

GMX
Before I explicitly whitelisted the SE domains it didn't even get to the "probable spam" folder, just blocked outright

hm okay, thanks -- I've pinged someone who knows what they're doing

which is really annoying because actual spam regularly gets through

I actually think its the .email domain
some folks are just silly and don't like them newfangled domains

12:48 PM
The response from team@ also landed in the bin before I scooped it out

it is delivered to gmail, in case it matters ...

2 hours later…
2:27 PM
I never received any ToS email, and iam on Hotmail.com, kinda strange

hey
Well, the quickest report of that email that I noticed was 1 day ago, and I received it 7 hours ago. Expect 6-8 more hours

I received mine 2 hours, 20 minutes ago.

ah ok

Jon Ericson on May 23, 2018

Back when I was a full-time programmer and there was some code someone struggled with, it was a common practice to ask around in cubicle land. Sometimes you’d get lucky and find someone who know the answer right away or knew where to look in the documentation. When Stack Overflow launched, I cultivated a habit of asking and immediately answering questions I’d heard discussed at the office on the site. To this day, I get upvotes on questions like “How can you untar more than one file at a time?” It doesn’t just add to my reputation score—it also feels great to know I’ve helped dozens¹ of strangers. How often can you say that about an hour or so of effort? …

3:28 PM
Hey

Hoi

That was short lived
I wasn't very welcoming I guess

Hola?

closevotes falling like petals

Poetry day again or what?

5:08 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ @user5389107 started it!

hey
5:24 PM
Blurred flower... blur.... soft.... welcoming.... I see.
both reports seem valid questions...

5:45 PM

Is it ok to post links to queue questions like etc?
Is that encouraged, even?

we can't take action on them from the link you're posting, we have to instead follow to the question and act manually

oh that's a shame, I thought it would be the same as what I saw so it helped the queue

6:08 PM
@SterlingArcher you mean here in this room for the MSE queue? I thought they are mostly empty. I hardly manage to get any reviews except close votes.

@rene nah I usually post cvs and flag stuff to the JS room

@SterlingArcher in SOCVR we don't allow NAA-flags as one is enough to get something into the queue so piling on flags won't help. cv-pls and re-opens are OK but we don't do specific reviews (so the sharing of a review isn't done) or it must abuse / plagiarism in the suggested-edit queue

how come pile on flags arent helpful?

one NAA/VLQ flag schedules a review task. More flags doesn't speed-up or prioritize the review task
it only helps your own flag weight if that is something you're after
Only for rude/abusivie comment flags piling on helps

Multiple NAA flags count towards deleting the answer, though...

6:16 PM
Do they?

what he says ^

So multiple flags does help!

Don't trust the mods! Wait ...

Why would multiple flags not help?

Only review actions count. A flag only pushes the post to a review queue.

6:19 PM
I'm pretty sure that's not true.
When I see flags, they're marked "NAA" in my flag queue.

@Catija I'm pretty sure that is wrong ;)

@Catija What does follow from that?

we're not talking red-flags, right?

right

@JohnDvorak There are no queues for "NAA"... so if a flag is "NAA", then it must have been flagged on the post.

6:21 PM
@rene they require more "looks ok" reviews to knock out of the queue though

that is interesting
At what ratio?

NAA flags push answers to the LQRQ, but don't count as deletion recommendations. Three votes or six recommendations then delete the answer (if possible) or convert the review task to a mod flag (otherwise).

I still don't understand why additional NAA flags wouldn't count as delete recommendations.

They should, yes, but they don't.

You can both close vote something or close it from review... both still increase the number of votes.
@JohnDvorak So show me something that says that?

6:25 PM
it isn't mentioned in How does deleting works

@JohnDvorak it would be interesting to see if we got it right there ...

I'll try combing meta

Here is Shog9's post meta.stackexchange.com/a/190639/158100 and the flag/looks Ok ratio is 1/1
so if a post is flagged, piling on 20 NAA flags will cause it to need 20 LOOKS OK to be pushed out the queue

Does it matter where the flag came from? In/Out of queue?

6:33 PM
@SterlingArcher I guess a flag is a flag

10-4 apricot

Can you flag NAA from inside the LQRQ?

There are no flagging options in the queue, no.

that ^

How should I understand the question then?

6:36 PM
@JohnDvorak I guess @SterlingArcher hadn't seen that queue for 6 to 8 weeks ...

7:05 PM
ugg had to throw my first flag in the lounge in ages

The trick is to pretend Lounge doesn't exist.

@JohnDvorak I like the place most of the time, it only gets problematic when people don't chill

Huh. I could have sworn I logged in on sunday. Ruined a 75 day login streak :(
Was so close to getting that badge

@SterlingArcher Yeah I've had that happen, it reset the counter on the gold badge too

Lets see.. I went golfing on sunday morning, came home and played overwatch and watched hockey. I'm almost positive I logged in on sunday SO is always open on my machine and it's a habit to check

7:10 PM
@SterlingArcher IIRC it counts based on GMT days

only opening the front-page isn't enough ...

Whenever someone says "Lounge" I can't help assuming "Teacher's Lounge" ... which makes flagging sort of out of context.

😬 Any chance a CM would give me that day back? lol

@Catija I hear flagging is done frivolous there ...

@Catija given some of the conversations I've heard drifting out of those... not really. Ironically this was actually a conversation about a grad student that got waaaay out of hand.

7:12 PM
@rene They're actually very rare... :) It's sort of pointless.

@Catija it didn't used to be, hence the reputation.

@SterlingArcher are they already capable of time-travel ...

We are talking about the same TL?

@Mgetz You sure you don't mean the C++ Lounge?

Nothing gets out of there...

7:13 PM
@AdamLear There is another lounge?

@Mgetz The "TL" or "Teachers' Lounge" is the Mod Chat room.

Teacher's Lounge is a private room where the mods hang out on chat.stackexchange

:D
I keep getting my apostrophes in the wrong place. :P

@Catija I wasn't aware, and given that I didn't know it existed the only lounge that would have made sense is the c++ lounge
my apologies

Which was the point of my first message... :D I don't use SO for the most part, so the C++ Lounge is as foreign to me as the TL is to you.

7:15 PM
any room can be a lounge if the seating is comfortable enough

and if there's enough seating

Virtual seating always has the best chances of being comfortable.

@Catija if every internet has a 4chan, then the c++ lounge used to be that for SO

Scary :/

I remember flags would come from that room left and right every day for a while

7:17 PM
And it never got nuked?

That was the only reason at first for pushing to 10k rep, just to see flags from that room
Oh there was a fallout. Most of the room left for a private server iirc

And since it's on the SO server, you have to have 10K on SO... as opposed to the SE server which all combines. :D

@SterlingArcher yep there is a discord now
which is ironically much more highly moderated

really?
ours is not lol

@SterlingArcher They have the tools and the power... and use them ruthlessly

7:27 PM
sounds not fun

ours needs more organization

@SterlingArcher I didn't say it wasn't fun, mostly they segregate the badness into easily ignorable channels

^

Actually we just added organization
However, you're not going to get kicked or banned easily
unless you post nsfw stuff outside those channels bc that's just not cool
It's nice, especially the voice channels for gaming

OTOH, the discord channel does not suffer from drive-by links to noob h/w questions that have been up on SO for 5 minutes, and then suffer flags when the shooters are told to do their own homework.

7:33 PM
@MartinJames the Q&A channel helped there
honestly we could have called it the C++ TA lounge

@MartinJames Better you don't tell them. They'd probably feel offended.
And have supporters for that view.

@πάνταῥεῖ we mostly just 'forget' to respond to those now
If they ask something specific we respond usually in the Q&A room

@πάνταῥεῖ Well, that happens less now that a pile of very highly-skilled and experienced C++ developers are no longer available to SO.

I'll be back soon, with probably improved behaviors.
You can track what I am doing, and how I am reacting at SE Code Review meanwhile.
It's the only site I am acting with CV privileges ATM.

7:59 PM
Hmm? What happened? TL;DR plz?

tl;dr; golf, streak, chat

Some streak of mine, yes. Narrow perspectives otherwise.

8:22 PM
@ShadowWizard The stream changed anyways yet.

Sense little makes this

The force introduced it :-P

@πάνταῥεῖ Don't cross the streams

That's the other movie
I dunno, if it's really a phenomenon, that especially experienced C++ volunteers tend to become _snarky_ or even _rude_ and will get flagged at a more than normal rate at comments.
The only evidence I could track is, that there's a heavy VLQ traffic at certain seasons and many participants might start to get blunt and leave "inappropriate" comments and these become "flagworthy."

"tend to become", so you noticed a time when they were all welcoming and friendly?

8:36 PM
I know that markup rendering isn't fully supported for multiline messages BTW.
@TravisJ Never, not really.

eh, in js chat is was more a case of things people today are flagging weren't being flagged before, instead they were being starred. sarcasm, things that were funny out of context, jokes, etc, all gone now, along with most of the activity

My point was that it is more probable that the sector associated with the technology plays a much larger roll than Stack Overflow itself.

@πάνταῥεῖ yeah the snark season lasts from september to may usually

No comments better.
@Mgetz Newb students.

i didn't really notice much of a seasonal change in js chat

8:40 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ The stereotype would be someone that hasn't even googled using turbo c++, and has been explicitly told by the their professor they can't use the stdlib (not that turbo really has one anyway)

Yeah, js and PHP might be even worse all over the time.

there was always a help vamp popping in, only now we don't boot them as quickly

Help vamps aren't so bad in chat if they are polite. It is the trolls who skirt the line which are the worst.

@Mgetz India! You'll even notice UTC time patterns.

like, at this point i'd rather a vamp be in the room than the normal no activity at all

8:41 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ not all of them are from india

@TravisJ πάντα ῥεῖ <==

and I wasn't going to mention that part of the sterotype

@Mgetz Most of the forced Turbo C++ users are certainly.
@KevinB We don't use that bad wording anymore BTW.

@πάνταῥεῖ true, bad professor is a universal sadly

sure we do

8:45 PM
well we didn't for a split second, and then it came back

And we consider words like "error", "wrong", "awkward", etc. as being compulsive language now. So please don't use it and adjust your compilers!

@πάνταῥεῖ snark offsides, free kick awarded

compulsive inappropriate
To be clear
Feel free to kick me, I'm familiar with that :-P

Snarky compilers?
Heh, that would be the day
> Compiler Error: "The name 'hello' does not exist in the current context" because your code is terrible. Why don't you just try something simple next time, like sweeping or chewing gum. Here is a link to all the possible ways to fix this failure of a project you help vampire.

Compilers are snarky all the time of course.

8:52 PM
May 19 at 12:52, by Mgetz
@MarkAmery "Oh you didn't initialize foo here let me initialize it for you... how about I just remove it instead. Does that work for you?"

Compilers aren't so bad, it is the runtime errors that bother me.

If you're coming with a specific mindset o attend them at least.

The SQL provider ran out of resources.

@TravisJ Same thing.

I hate that one.

8:54 PM
Am I not good enough resource for you stupid machine? Why you're reacting like that with me?
@TravisJ SE Code Review teaches you, that your code isn't ready for review, as long it's not working as intended. That's one (filtering) thing I love about that site.

@πάνταῥεῖ ..and then you find out that the review/refactor was pointless anyway because your boss delivered already.

I am not giving advice about how to blame your boss. That's way off ...
I try to shield my boss about such fails BTW, because I am friends with them, but that's a completely different thing.
@Mgetz "I'll do that for you" is patronizing. Don't do that!

9:12 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ this was the snarky compiler

Ah I see (remember)! Snarky and patronizing , yes.
I am ready to argue which of the sites of the interfaces were implemented wrong.

@πάνταῥεῖ then you've already lost!

@TravisJ "Hi! I'm sorry to say that I received a note from the memory management hardware. It seems that your application has a little problem with overstepping its bounds when writing to memory. Could you please attend that small matter before trying to run it again? Many thanks in advance, have a nice day:)"

@MartinJames I think ASan may do this now

My major direction is to simply keep out.
@MartinJames Might be buried because former out of memory issues. Nice approach tho.
@Mgetz Static Analysis does great things, doesn't capture every possible runtime issue tho.

Sanitizing language (any) is a thing, and should be considered seriously. Though we shouldn't drag emotions and emphatic concerns to every facet of language achieved everywhere.
There's need (and need about minimal competence) to distinguish social interactions and technical or factual concerns in responses from any (half-)automated systems.
We've worked hard about getting such consensus the least 20 thousand years now.
Don't just wipe that off within just a wink!

@πάνταῥεῖ Asan isn't static, it's fully runtime
it puts guards around every allocation and reroutes free. It also interacts with stack protector too

@Mgetz So you need to generate all the possible test cases in 1st place?
Meh!

@πάνταῥεῖ It's pretty useful in finding buffer overflows and such
or double frees
or failure to free memory

I'm more about social expectation overflows right now. But well ...

either way I'm out for now

@Mgetz My 1st attend to the C++ Lounge was asking about their undefined behavior I had noticed in observation.
Not to mention I were invited.

@Catija It's also worth mentioning that the name "Stack Overflow, Inc." is already taken by another company, so in its early days, before the Stack Exchange network was created, the company was named "Stack Overflow Internet Services, Inc."
