6:00 PM
Having a team with a broad sample of perspectives on the world is a strenght

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Bret did some of that on Aviation, IIRC

Bret Copeland. he's a dev

@user5389107 Sure, as long as those perspectives aren't "downvotes are bad" -- a lot of people not experienced with the site have perspectives that would actively harm the site

@AdamLear you've been there IIRC so I won't nominate you, don't worry ;)

6:01 PM
Since they aren't elected as a mod, they must get elected if they wish to continue moderating once their employment ends, right?

If proven sane the diamond may turn-out to be sticky ...

Of course we don't want all the staff to be identical clones who agree on everything, but hiring a CM who thinks we should be yahoo answers doesn't sound like a great idea
There's a sweet spot in between

Nobody said that

@NobodyNada That was my pitch .. .. :(

look, it's unlikely they'll even survive the murder-house on-boarding seminar...

6:03 PM
I'd hire Makyen as a CM, because he provides detailed explanations.

But getting someone with a outside perspective could be valueable. It's easy to develop blindspots if all your employees in a team are of completly like mind.

@user5389107 I kind of "defected" when others spoke negatively about April's Medium post

I really didn't like that post for various reasons but I can respect the intent
Then again my opinion is irrelevant

@user5389107 My misunderstanding, the idea of SE staff saying "we need a new perspective" set off my alarm bells after the blog post

@NobodyNada SE staff didn't say that iirc
I brought that up

6:05 PM
@user5389107 no danger of that

@Shog9 nice to hear :)
maybe you'll have more time with more hands on deck

The value of an outside perspective is simply that: perspective. Being able to see the forest for the trees, or to use another familiar metaphor: being able to recognize the elephant.

@user5389107 Right -- "the idea of SE staff saying ..."

@user5389107 this sentence is confusing

@rene Nominate? Are you offering to write their resume and cover letter for them?

6:06 PM
The four blind men all had different perspectives, but none of them were accurate.
Sometimes, that's how we operate as a company: long, bitter arguments over the nature of something that we're all completely wrong about.

Maybe together through discourse they can formulate one that's less inaccurate, though

Blind men? wondering what I missed

:6951304 K

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ K

The parable of the blind men and an elephant originated in the ancient Indian subcontinent, from where it has been widely diffused. However the meaning as popular proverb which derived in the history from original is different from the each other country or domain. It is a story of a group of blind men, who have never come across an elephant before and who learn and conceptualize what the elephant is like by touching it. Each blind man feels a different part of the elephant body, but only one part, such as the side or the tusk. They then describe the elephant based on their partial experience and...

6:07 PM
I dunno if either of them worked

@ShadowWizard The elephant in the room.

Nobody is entirely right but if you have a huge sample of different opinions and perspectives it's harder to be egregiously wrong on most things

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ doubt it

@Shog9 how much time is actually spent discussing Q&A versus other initiatives?

@ShadowWizard Not K

6:08 PM
Since some of that cancels each other out and people take more kindly to suggestions and arguments from respected coworkers then strangers

@JonEricson elephant?! Where?! running away in panic :D

@canon I have no idea

@Catija SO is a grumpy elephant

Thats what well meaning people mean when they say "diversity is a strenght" well it really is

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ !K

6:08 PM
@ShadowWizard JK

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ JFK

@ShadowWizard I wouldn't worry too much. I can't see it.

@user5389107 that works extremely well when everyone is able to make a slightly-inaccurate observation. It doesn't work at all when no one is able to observe, or everyone's perspective skews in the same direction but to differing degrees.

@JonEricson doesn't help. You're riding it!

@Shog9 hence the diversity thing. Not just traditional diversity but diversity of opinion
It's good to have people you respect that you really don't agree with on a lot

6:10 PM
@ShadowWizard KFC

It provides a good spot to hone your own perspective and make fewer mistakes ... it's easy to jump to conclusions and get things wrong in the meanwhile when everyone is looking at a problem from the same angle
The job description sounds like y'all will be inundated by hundreds of applications

6:25 PM
@Shog9 yeah I can see this being an issue, particularly about things like voting. Sometimes there are no good answers, the true genius is finding solutions to those problems.

So I'll take that last chat suspension as a hint, that debate about any particular person, even if standing in symbolically for a particular opinion or stance, is taken as inappropriate content. Right?

@Catija if that is what it takes ;)

@rene HAHA. Have fun with that. :P

@Mgetz yeah, voting is always fun to argue about because it lets you focus on a mechanic instead of a problem.
"These lawn darts are too dangerous; when kids throw them at each other, they get hurt."
...but why are the kids throwing obviously dangerous objects at each other?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ yum
@JonEricson you need glasses @Bart

6:32 PM
@Shog9 Why are kids eating cinnamon or Tide pods?

@Catija those aren't kids, they're Millennials - they're like... 30 or something now.
I blame the parents

!!/blame

@ShadowWizard It's Martin James's fault.

I'm a millennial and I don't do that.

6:33 PM
i mean... i've shot bottle rockets at friends in the streets

What is "millennial"?

same thing right?

@KevinB naw, shooting bottle rockets at friends is what bottle rockets are made for.
Good fun for everyone.

I shot paper balls at "friends" back in highschool

Also, the intended purpose of roman candles is target practice involving pole-mounted transformers

6:35 PM
@Shog9 Well I would say it's a black hole of a problemspace, the issue is finding the solution space

> Anyone born between 1981 and 1996 (ages 22 to 37 in 2018) will be considered a Millennial

@Catija Sadly that would be me

Why exactly? I'd guessed born after 2000

@Catija shucks, I'm 1998

@Catija missed it in 3 years. What does it make me?

6:37 PM
@ShadowWizard Millennial+

I'm a millenial ... barely

Well, clearly the Tavern folk are suffering from a severe cinnamon and Tide-pod deficiency, no doubt resulting in alienation and feelings of detachment. Best get your supplements!

@ShadowWizard if you're before you're "Gen Y"

@ShadowWizard born before the millennial "cutoff" makes you Generation X, after is Gen Z IIRC

6:37 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ Graduated from high school around the millennium and after (?)... I was born in '82 and graduated from HS in 2000. That's how I've always interpreted it... people becoming adults starting around 2000.

@Shog9 I saw a post on Drupal the other day. On it

@Mgetz well, I'm not 19... would be creepy to become a father at age of 12. ;)

A friend of mine tried the cinnamon challenge and had to go to the doctor because of incessant coughing

It's great that Drupal covers lots of different topics with ease

@NobodyNada what will come after Z?

6:38 PM
@ShadowWizard Gen Y is pre 1981?
IIRC

Ah, the graduation it is. I had something like that in mind. But don't underestimate the environments toddlers are grown up with.

@ShadowWizard Foof, thought I'm slacking off

@Mgetz so Gen A is... 1800 or so? I don't really get all of this. :/

@ShadowWizard shrug

6:39 PM
@ShadowWizard the Excel model. AA, AB, etc

@ShadowWizard nor do I

So how long before my generation is blamed for world problems?

That image is from this article: pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/03/01/…

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ you will be great daddy no worry

So I'm with the "boomers"

6:40 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ The world's problems are the fault of your generation.

I kind of want to know how many applications they get for the CM spot

@Mgetz Millennials are Gen Y, before is X

@user5389107 6-8 of course

@MartinJames Popular trend is to blame the former generation.

@AdamLear very simple

6:42 PM
@AdamLear so eventually there will be a gen YYZ

@Mgetz and XXX
when reaching ZZZ everyone will fall asleep.

@ShadowWizard The kinky generation

@Mgetz oh yeah
:P

is that, "generation fried shrimp?"

6:43 PM
@MartinJames but now I'm supposed to be controlling it
Something's broken here

"The hovering ones" rofl

@Shog9 unexplained gap between 2162 and 2359
Time travel?
Or wet wipes? Both can explain anything.

No, we succeeded in simulating an apocalypse
And since we're not bacteria, takes some time to repopulate Earth

oh
Why bother with Earth though?
just old ruined planet.

because at that point it still has billions of years to go

6:47 PM
Our Eden is out there...

@ShadowWizard the other living beings know we're arseholes already

@ShadowWizard Generation Omega harnessed the power of a supernova to extend its life indefinitely or until Rassilon lost a fight with Kirk

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ "other"?

@ShadowWizard see what I mean? :p

@Shog9 you watch too much SF

6:49 PM
@ShadowWizard actually, you watch too little

Mostly I just read the SFF site. But only for the spoilers.

Addicting innit?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ it's more about quality, not quantity

@ShadowWizard so you only watch the trailers

Spoilers are the best thing on the Internet: read enough of them and you can stop wasting all that time watching movies, tv, books...
2

6:50 PM
@Shog9 so how does it end?
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ you got me :D

@ShadowWizard Picard gives a long impassioned speech about recognizing the shared goals among us all while Ace wacks robots with a baseball bat.

@NobodyNada That is possible to give a warning doesn't mean they will. I do know the local relevant regulator in my (EU) country said that they would fine elementary schools in case they saw that nothing was done. Of course, this likely isn't comparable, but well, let's just say there are risks involved with a 'we will see'-attitude and I don't think size matters.

@Shog9 Saves a lotta time (which is a spare good)

@Shog9 Easy way to get all those tricky pop-culture references.

@Shog9 MSE questions about spoilers in the HNQ would indicate that your view is not universal.

6:52 PM
@Discretelizard it's the only way. I'm pretty sure 90% of memes are based on scenes that played while I was getting a soda.
@Catija people just don't know what's good for 'em.

@Shog9 like a little tough love when they ask a poor question! ducks

It builds character

Any chance on picking the MSE town halls back up sooN?

There was a really great article written by a film reviewer... he'd written a review about Jurassic World and part of the review complained about there being too many leaps of logic... an issue with the plot not giving proper indication of a future event making the event seem sudden and nonsensical... when, it turned out, that he'd been out of the theater when that foreshadowing happened...

Movie theaters really need a DVR function
@user5389107 predicated on hiring someone who wants to run them

6:56 PM
I think the goal was to point out the film reviewers don't necessarily do a film justice by staying in the theater and basing their reviews on the entire film.

If I had more then a billionth of a chance I might apply

@user5389107 yeah, if we need a rabbling outlet since we can't rabble at new users anymore.

@Catija clearly they should review based on the trailer, since folks will tend to watch the whole thing through at least once. Also, the editing will probably be better.

@Shog9 sounds just right.

Everyone knows the funniest parts are always in the trailer, anyway.

7:00 PM
Best movie of 2017: the trailer for Jumanji

You mean the new one with The Rock?

@Catija not in Avengers, at least for me

Maybe there aren't any funny parts in Avengers?

Oh, there definitely are.

Spoil me plz ;)

7:05 PM
I liked the Bob Ross trailer for Deadpool. Not sure how the movie can possibly live up to it.

I don't know... but I've got tickets to skip work and see it Friday morning.

Wait Bob Ross trailer? That "Bob Ross" (the painting teacher genius)??

> Beating Satan off our brush
:-D

@πάνταῥεῖ Giant Imp

7:12 PM
@Catija :( me no can see

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Sorry :(

@πάνταῥεῖ the last film?

At least that Trailer is great :-D

I used to rely on my VPN, they've found a way to block it

I'm not a very Avengers fan in general.

7:14 PM
So I have no VPN for now

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ IPv6 IPSec tunnel?

@Mgetz Yyyyyes? I love that car

But a very "Bob Ross" fan though. That guy (while denying anything else he said along what he was doing on the canvas) influenced me a lot.

0-100 in 2.8 seconds

Nevermind

7:16 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ what alternatives you have, if any? (to images, vids hosting)

He was like Mr. Rogers... such a positive outlook, welcoming, kind. Good person.

@πάνταῥεῖ Deadpool isn't an Avenger
That'd be relentless on the PG rating

@Catija Yup! And their techniques are just great and amazing.

@ShadowWizard you mean an alternative to YouTube?

Deadpool is owned by Sony, not Disney. Theoretically, they could combine eventually but that'd be problematic for Scarlet Witch...

7:18 PM
He's got me started working with big brushes and palette knives.

I wonder, how long does it take for moderator flags to be handled on Meta?

6-8 weeks

@Shog9 alt+0153

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ well, any site that can host videos that you can watch
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ true, Avengers only kick butts, not showing them.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog it might be personal
I had a time when my flags took over months, so I gave up.

Here's one of that pictures I created using B.R.'s tecnique (Visual Archetypes, "Rectangle" (2002, acrylic color on canvas)):

7:24 PM
2 hours ago, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
No, I wish Shog would explain things very detailed much like Makyen.

I've always assumed it depends on the type of flag... some things are obvious and easy if there's a CM available to poke at them... but, for example, I have a flagged for review, which I can imagine would take some time to consider and review before following through on.

I have a flag from last month that still needs to be handled

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog who is makyen?

Sometimes pictures tell more than a 1000 words.

@Shog9 A user who always provides detailed explanations for everything and answers my questions literally.

Then why wouldn't you wish for makyen to answer your question?
@πάνταῥεῖ nice

Ask particular users for answers.
Well known declined FR

Well, Nick sometimes give answers with tons of technical details.

@Shog9 I hope you get some of my background and mindset from that pic ;)

@Shog9 Because he doesn't have access to the code
Can he handle moderator flags on Meta? No.

7:31 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ sorta implemented in Teams

Sorta, yes. But I found that mentorship programme more suitable for a not that closed public audience.

@ShadowWizard well, only crappy sites that host videos no one watches

@Shog9 Why did you diminish yourself that much in your recent tweet?
> Think you can do my job better than me?
>
> Well, you're probably right.
I believe you ever done a good job about that. Any self doubts?

I think some people get intimidated and never apply to jobs like this.
They shouldn't.

Probably!

7:36 PM
@Shog9 Probably for the best. Lest someone would need to skim my resume before binning it.

@πάνταῥεῖ context pls, for us censored peasants

I'm an old C coder with no social skills; if I can do this, you can probably do better

But it's not you vs me

Think you can do my job better than me? Well, you're probably right. Wanna prove it? https://stackoverflow.com/company/work-here/1161802/community-manager

It's me vs every other qualified applicant

7:37 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Just follow Shog at twitter if you like to. He's got something to say.

Oh, I thought you pinged @Sha

You got this job through having proven yourself before

@πάνταῥεῖ I can't

@Shog9 How did you survive without any social skills?

It's not a cage match.

7:38 PM
???

We don't break a pool queue and hire the last applicant standing

Sometimes... being blunt can be an asset.

The hiring process kind of is - assuming due diligence

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ What a pity.

The biggest hurdle isn't the other candidates, it's you... Followed by whoever interviews you.

7:40 PM
@Shog9 Of course not... you just pull it out of the case and it's already in two parts.

@πάνταῥεῖ I don't know what it is, but it's pretty annoying

For me the biggest hurdle would be getting an interview
I'm reasonably competent in interviews - even got hired at the central bank once, but getting there is the challenge

goes to apply, realizes I can't be legally hired for the next two and bit years

@Mithrandir Ha ha ha

I just realized I haven't updated my resume in 3 years
dear lord

7:42 PM
For the folks here who've participated on meta for a bit, figure you've already written your resume. Your work is out there, speaking for itself; you just have to corroborate it.

If @Shog9,- or one of the other elephants -, might consider to confirm my recent question/self answer please:
1 hour ago, by πάντα ῥεῖ
So I'll take that last chat suspension as a hint, that debate about any particular person, even if standing in symbolically for a particular opinion or stance, is taken as inappropriate content. Right?

I'd assume they'd still want to see a CV though

Pretend that they're hiring all the great candidates and go from there. Whether they're hiring one or twenty, it shouldn't diminish your qualifications...

@πάνταῥεῖ I can't parse that

@πάνταῥεῖ Targeting specific users is almost always discouraged. Talking about an opinion is different from talking about a person who holds that opinion.

7:43 PM
Being brutally honest I'm unsure if I have what it takes, I'd love that job but I'm not sure if I'm cut out for it

@πάνταῥεῖ you were objectively not nice

@user5389107 I've heard a lot of people say that today.

It wasn't a discussion aimed at stances, but people

Probably because it's a one in a million job and nobody sees themselves as one in a million

"people with strange characters in their usernames are annoying" is different from "people like @πάνταῥεῖ with strange characters in their usernames are annoying".

7:44 PM
Being brutally honest I'm unsure if I have what it takes, I'd love that job but I'm not sure if I'm cut out for it
@Cat ++

There are... two people... who I know of who will apply for this position without hesitation... pretty much everyone else seems to doubt themselves.

@Shog9 I was kicked for 30mins because posting inappropriate content, mainly because mentioning a particular name most probably.

@πάνταῥεῖ oh. Well, don't do that then

@Catija Geek and Monica?

@Mithrandir Yup.

7:45 PM
You should apply.

@Shog9 That was what I expected, THX.

@Catija That competition is a huge doubt factor, I'd wager
It's like in moderator elections
You're confident you can do it until there's 15 people who are on the face of it infinitely better qualified then you are

That's why I said to tell yourself that there are many positions... if there are several, whether the other people apply is sort of irrelevant...
@user5389107 I've seen very few mod elections where that's the case. Usually it's a matter of there being two slots and three good candidates.

@Catija that's always the case. Guess what: we all doubt ourselves. There's no roadmap for most of this; when there is, it's drawn on the back of a napkin in crayon and no one's sure if "X" marks buried treasure or dragons.

There are very few people aside from the current staff who put as much effort, time, and energy into SE like @Catija. You should at least get paid for it.

7:48 PM
An awful lot of this job is just being willing to speak up when something needs to be said, even when you're not sure what to say or how to say it.
The rest is listening.
2

@Shog9 I didn't say that it wasn't common. Heck, I've had to fight myself into applying for every job I've ever gotten... and I've been offered jobs where I had no clue I'd even been a contender... like when I got the offer to go from an internship to a paid job with the Casting Director... There were three other people I was interning with and I was certain that they'd all be considered ahead of me...
@Mithrandir I really appreciate the vote of confidence. :)

You almost convinced me to give it a shot shog
Even if just to see the supposedly awesome rejection emails SE sends

Don't fall victim to Imposter Syndrome.

^That goes quickly downwards, yes!

@Catija I wouldn't want to be an SE CM... I'm no good at slaying dragons

7:52 PM
@Shog9 That's probably one of the toughest parts I believe.

I'm not gonna lie; this is not always a very fun job. You're constantly being pulled in multiple directions and a lot of the folks doing the pulling aren't very nice about it.
But... You get to work with a team of people who are all in the same place, and willing to support you when you need it. And that makes up for a lot.
And frankly... at the end of the day, it's a job - you get paid because it's work. If it sounds like work that you could live with getting paid to do, you should apply; if nothing else, it's an excuse to write a cover letter wherein you brag about yourself.

Good stance for a job to do (daily)!

You make bragging sound like a good thing... :/

Hey, I'm a narcissist - talking about my self is my favorite pastime.
(spelling, OTOH...)

7:56 PM
I might just apply for this, maybe I'll even get an interview

For a narcissist, you sure don't give yourself a lot of credit for stuff you do.
@user5389107 Looking for an excuse to go to NYC?

expertly self deprecating narcissist

That's the term.

@Catija It is my assumption they're conducting phone and skype interviews before flying you anywhere

best part of the job? You can work from anywhere. I roasted about 1.5lbs of coffee while having this conversation.

7:57 PM
All of the outspoken C-devs were narcissists until I showed them bare metal C++ :-D

Popcorn poppers?

That'd honestly be the best part

yep

can stay here where my family is and where rent is 200 bucks a month
ah hell why not
can't lose harder then getting rejected

@user5389107 \o/

7:58 PM
If you don't try, you'll get rejected anyway. :)
