I'm testing the water. I'd rather not have another declined flag. Who knows, I may run for moderator.

@canon How many declined flags do you have?

@canon I'd probably reject it as written, but... I think you could make an effective argument for it not being an answer.

@canon I don't trust cameras

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ don't confuse me with Canon... or cannon, for that matter.
@rene 4.7% declined
@rene over like 43 flags... so, like 2. :P

Oh ... I have 50 declined ... over 10,000 flags ...

6:30 PM
@rene totally fake stats

@rene thanks for keeping the trains running. Always nice when someone's a few orders of magnitude out of your league. :P

yeah, it's not like you could watch rene's profile and verify, totally fake. wait. ;)

@FélixGagnon-Grenier his profile is fake

you are fake

UR FACE

6:32 PM
NO U!!!!
everything is fake
we don't exist
run for your lives

His daffodil is fake too

well, til. daffodil sounded like some elvish ancestral weapon or something

Amlaruil, blade of the ancients. Slayer of noobs. Herald of the apocalypse.

6:48 PM
Uggh, someone stop me from stalking this user. :/
/coffee

@canon no stalk, bad canon

::twitch::
I am all that is wrong with our culture.

You don't seem like Justin Bieber to me

I meant the SO "elitists". If Justin Bieber is one of us, there may be a seppuku ritual in my future.

I wish we could +1 on an edit

6:56 PM
which?

the last one.

@FélixGagnon-Grenier what, the italicized quotes?

lol

7:01 PM
wat!

lol, I actually looked at the edit history. You're right... can't upvote. :/

@Mgetz what answer?

Q: Niche technologies and question acceptance and moderation on StackOverflow

Evan CarrollNiche technologies have a smaller pool of users, and a smaller yet pool of experts. That however shouldn't determine whether or not a question is on topic here. Sorry for the lengthy post, but let's look at a few examples here, Tab Completion Acceptable How do I make vim do normal (bash like...

Silly Evan.

Doesn't he understand that consistently enforcing rules is inherently discriminatory?

What a bigoted expectation he has.

For certain values of "fun".

whoops, I was in the process of drafting a custom flag... alt-tabbed... came back and the dialog was gone. I hope I dismissed that instead of submitting it.

@canon I wish we could Undo in real life

shift-ctrl-z... walk back through edit history
real life needs a mutable modifier stack

Save points would be cool too
Or a Restore Disk

7:12 PM
multiple lives? #1up

full git version control, with tags and branches, and a master life experience
only when the integration tests have passed can we merge

@canon clicking anywhere outside the flag dialog closes it, and send whatever was written in custom flag textarea to the void.... surely there's feature request asking to change it, too lazy to find it ATM. :)
@canon nah, one life, but with the option to Load and go back to some past time when you did a Save.

actually, Altered Carbon is the closest to version controlled life I've seen in a series

@FélixGagnon-Grenier offsite-backup ftw

7:22 PM
@ShadowWizard welcome to the Tavern, Shadow Wizard!
I don't recall ever seeing you before

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I'm new here. What is this place?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It's a prestige class they added in D&D 3rd edition.

oh, I tried playing D&D with my kids. Waaaay too early. :/
Maybe in 6-8 years they'll be ready.

@ShadowWizard How young is too young for bludgeoning trolls?

such context

7:34 PM
@ShadowWizard its a great idea, will try with my kids, it has been like 20 year I didn't played D&D. what age your kid ? my olders are 8 and 11, so maybe that will be playable

Diaspora is a hard science fiction novel by the Australian writer Greg Egan which first appeared in print in 1997. == Plot introduction == This novel's setting is a posthuman future, in which transhumanism long ago (during the mid 21st century) became the default philosophy embraced by the vast majority of human cultures. The novel began as a short story entitled "Wang's Carpets" which originally appeared in New Legends, a collection of short stories edited by Greg Bear (Legend, London, 1995). Egan later adapted and included "Wang's Carpets" as a chapter in the novel. An appended glossary explains...

@canon 5 and (almost) 8, and they only fought a dragon. Killed it, and when I told them the next one will be harder and will have double HP (so it will be more fair fight) they didn't want to play anymore. o_O
@yagmoth555 yeah, the 11 might be enough. And yes, 20 years for me too!

I got my first DnD 3e at 11 and mostly learned / played by myself for a few years before I got my friends to try it out. sounds like you should be able to introduce the game correctly :)

7:52 PM
I never thought to play by myself, that's just won't be fun, for me. Started at 13 or 14 (maybe 12? not sure) with friends, I wasn't the one who initiated it, followed the lead of other friend. We were only three, but it was fun enough. :)

@ShadowWizard young kids enjoy success more than the challenge

@user1114 What do you mean by this:
> Can we drop the clickbait spam module in the redesign? Everybody hates it.

8:07 PM
@ɥʇǝS I know that too well... but we also should teach them that success is not everything. :)
1114 is Jeremy, right? Such low number is easy to remember.

Yep.

If Community will reset its display name will it be "user-1"?

I miss cky. 13 was a GREAT userID
I mean... Still is

he was 13?! wow
What happened to him anyway?

he left?

8:10 PM
So why you miss him?

Wanted to do something a bit closer to user mentoring
which... Is kind of a good idea
but I sorta lost track of him
too much going on
...what is it with losing all the coworkers who are into user mentoring?

well he's no mod anywhere anymore

It's like a curse
yeah, he was into some weird stuff like CodeGolf too

@Shog9 business doesn't like paying for them... I literally just had this happen to me
I basically got told I would need to get back into a billable role

@Shog9 why who else? @JonEricson is into user mentoring and you still didn't lose him... :D

@Catija There's a reason that there are two dozen different plugins for blocking Hot Network Questions that actually have users. I doubt any other feature on the site has many people going out of their way to get rid of it.

Anonymous
It usually highlights the worst content on the network.

@ShadowWizard I assume Pops did because he was an amazing adviser when I first became a mod.

Anonymous
It highlights them in a context that invites activity to make them worse.

Anonymous
It's distracting nonsense from the people who are here for actual work reasons.

Anonymous
It should not exist.

8:18 PM
But what is the "clickbait spam module"... the HNQ list entirely?

Anonymous
Yes.

That's the connection I was missing.

Anonymous
Ah. Yes. Silly unclear message.

Anonymous
well I'm resisting telling my boss to go fuck himself, so the steam gets fired off here some times.

It makes sense now. There are a lot of proponents of the sidebar. I'm sort of neutral on it, personally... it makes IPS more of a handful but it also brings in traffic.

8:19 PM
@Catija "clickbait" is common reference to HNQ, spam is less common.

@user1114 Oh, I'm sorry. That sounds stressful.

@user1114 what boss? Where do you work now?

Anonymous
Google. I rolled the manager dice well last time. Critical Fail 1 this time.

Anonymous
@Catija Thank you. It is stressful and I'm handling it very poorly.

@user1114 Ouch. Wish you to get 20 next time.
Rolling 1 brought funny stuff while playing though.

8:23 PM
Yes, it can definitely be entertaining to reflect on, but not optimal for the character's wellbeing. :P

> You stumbled over your own sword and fell face down while attacking the goblin. +5 to your AC for next round.
@user1114 exactly!
Well, it's fair, since 20 usually means instant kill for ordinary enemies... :)
(at low levels)

@Shog9 The bottom line.

There's no bottom to this

@ShadowWizard for sure.

@user1114 You don't have one of those managers who tells you what to do but has no clue how to actually do it themselves so doesn't understand the complexity of the problem they're asking you to solve ... yesterday... do you?

Anonymous
8:29 PM
Not exactly, but similar in management holding a very wrong mental picture of the actual state of things at the level of actual work being done.

I found that we can let steam off on Twitter easily...

@user1114 I didn't have this conversation but it's definitely a whiskey day, I just had a really not fun conversation with my manager

Anonymous
I had reason to suspect this manager may also be inclined to Google my name for ammunition, which would have been a bad combination with my emotional misbehaviour. (One of the motivations for the name change.)

@ShadowWizard and then Steam for letting off twits?

You could play fighting games on Steam to blow off steam?

Anonymous
8:33 PM
I should go get a fighting joystick thingie again... those were very tactile-y satisfying when I've used them in the past.

There's a coffee shop in south 'Springs named "Urban Steam". You can blow the steam off your coffee and then enjoy a really good waffle.

Just get duckhunt and yell impotently at the laughing dog.

@user1114 emotional misbehaviour? Is this a thing?
@Shog9 you can do that?! :P

Anonymous
I have been misbehaving, at least a little bit, and it has been emotion-driven. So those words seemed descriptive.

hmm.... good point.
Best take some time off in those cases, IMO.

Anonymous
8:36 PM
Although I guess that parses like "misbehaviour of emotions", which wasn't really what I meant.

emotions are valid and whatever. How you handle them is what matters.

hey, anger, play nice with frustration, will you?

I always recommend a walk and a nice cup of tea
how much bourbon you put in that tea is up to you
that's called Agency

I always prefer highly smoked tea. Hides scotch odor much better

Anonymous
8:37 PM
There is a liquor store a block from the office -- perfect distance for a walk. =P

@Shog9 kids tend to break things when angry at something.

so do some adults

Sadly.

@ShadowWizard I think you mean "kids tend to break things"...

Anonymous
@FélixGagnon-Grenier Is liquor + tea actually a thing? My assumption was that they liquor would mask any tea flavours because they're too weak.

8:38 PM
@Catija hehe, well, also true. :D

Also. Hi again. :)

I tried putting whiskey in tea once... It was a rather unfortunate combination.

just needs strong tea

But ... what kind of tea.

and strong liquor
and a strong stomach

8:39 PM
Easier to punish when they break something for fun than when doing it out of real (and sometimes justified) anger.

I like earl grey w/ jasmine flowers

To be fair, iced tea. That might have been my first mistake.

@Catija oh, hi!

Unsweetened.

@user1114 yes, for most tea, but when the tea's flavor is mostly smoke, an old quarter cask laphroaig fits perfectly

Mind you, I'm not a liquor kinda person. Give me a beer IV any day.

Anonymous
I am intrigued. 🍵🍾

alternately, just put the bourbon straight in your teacup. Look classy and refined without all that brewing hassle

8:40 PM
Does it require the pinky lift?

@Shog9 but waffles also left, we can't enjoy from him being around anymore. ;)

@ShadowWizard hey, he's been back a few times

@Shog9 really??
Where?

also, The Waffle Bar lives on

@Catija lapsang souchong, mainly

8:41 PM
lol

If you pour a Guinness into a large coffee mug, it'll look like you just have a really baller foamy espresso. Why you'd have 16 oz of espresso is a different question.

He was on MSO last week sometime.

@ShadowWizard check profile on meta?
@AdamLear insomnia

Most people don't know about TWB

leave cause and effect unstated
@Catija The Workblase?

8:42 PM
@AdamLear that sounds like a perfect plan

@Shog9 ... most people who know what The Waffle Bar is... don't know it's called that.
I aim to change that.

@Shog9 too lazy

"Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for... meh"

?
I don't have any affair! :D

@Shog9 ಠ_ಠ

8:44 PM
damn it, they just replaced the (non-working) neon lights over my desk. it feels like... day

nothing like brand-new non-working lights to brighten up a workplace

lol poor @Félix
I hate it when neon light is dying, it kind of blinks

I seriously think I'll bring a ladder and disconnect the thing

After digging through literally 1500 spam posts on Medium.com in the past three days, I have a new appreciation for the SE spam flag system.

8:45 PM
It's like... so easy to remove this stuff!

90% of the spam doesn't make it through at all

disappears back down rabbit hole
Oh, @Sha - if you were watching the news several hours ago you might have had a glimpse of me in the background, not sure if I actually was in view of the camera :P

9:03 PM
@Mithrandir didn't watch... :(

9:30 PM
sd tpu-

@πάνταῥεῖ just curious what does this mean?
@FélixGagnon-Grenier Neon... you have a tequila sign up there or something?

True positive keep user in blacklist.

ah ok, I figured it was something like that

9:47 PM
@Mgetz sadly not...

@FélixGagnon-Grenier I had a mental image of you having bar neon above your head

The tea's going to diffuse a lot better if you get the booze hot...

10:51 PM
@Catija in vodka? eh the alcohol will pull out quite a bit as is
the trick to pulling out the bitter is to use cream and the curdle it deliberately so you can strain it

11:13 PM
@user1114 Inspired by some of Evan's examples in that question, I just asked meta.stackoverflow.com/q/367706/1709587
Specifically, by the "Where can I find the source code for [X]?" examples

Morning.
