Dealing with the high level personnel needs to deal with their potentially personal quirks like Aspergers and all that kind. Ask any good HR manager in the IT branch.

@JonEricson I think a lot of that is due to the unfair side of answering questions
That is the FGITW problem and how optimizing for upvotes is not the same as optimizing for usefulness

@HTTPS what's that? Why obscuring time stamps? Why sad?

@Magisch That reminds me. I need to write a blog post about answering questions with a new users. It's gotten way harder to earn reputation. :-(

@Jon If you want to have good people, encourage them to share their knowledge. If you want to have lots of attraction (for business needs), just sell (for free) answers for anyone. I'm eager to know Joel's point about that.

@JonEricson I noticed that.
When I started in late 2015, I had little success at first
I looked at old answers - they weren't much better then mine
Hell, some answers with 900+ upvotes were much lower effort then what I tried out
Turns out, most of the easy questions have been asked and answered by now

7:15 PM
@JonEricson It wasn't really hard to earn rep with my user0042 sock, it was a really amazing experience.

And especially in certain tags (cough c cough) you gotta be on your game or get criticism / downvotes instantly

Are moderators able to see pending voluntary deletion timers on other users' accounts?

@πάνταῥεῖ even better than YCS?! Just don't tell him...... ;)

Mind you, I don't think it'S bad per say that it is like this, but it puts into perspective the complaints about new users

@SonicWizard They probably are able to see. Mods can see anything :-P

7:17 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ Which tag(s)?

If I had little enough to do and enough disregard for myself I could probably get a decent reputation train going by chaining answers to easy JS / jquery / swift questions
They'll get closed as dupes but it won't matter you'll pick up a couple upvotes and the odd accept here and there over the long time

@JonEricson I'm mostly into c++ c and allied. But participating at other SE sites like German Language, I widened my perspective.

Only, it doesn't feel like helping
It feels like you're polluting the Q/A base by making the decent answers in linked dupes harder to find
For added profit get a gold badge in your easy tag and start reopening dupes you answer instantly

@ShadowWizard Sure better than YCS, because I've chosen to take on the really serious programming languages in 1st place :P

7:21 PM
And not to mention that @Machavity is way more patient about that basic issue

Turns out I'm the toxic problem ...
what on earth did I do wrong there?

@rene Nothing! You're good!

@rene Don't you know that you're toxic...

Meh, it was probably the comment about doesn't work ..

@rene How are these people really relevant?

7:25 PM
@rene TIL rene is a poison arrow plant
so toxic

even those red and blue tiny frogs avoid Rene on sight.

@rene And even if I could I'd deny to extend that discussion in comments. I don't want to end up with the

Ugh. I'd just typed a bunch to move that off the top of my screen. :-(

uBlock zapper mode FTW

@JonEricson use your diamond to delete/move it from everyone's screen if you want... ;)

7:30 PM
@rene Fortunately it seemed to have worked for this particular case.

@rene Most of the time when I make formatting edits, the asker is grateful. Every now and then you run across the person who believes everything they type is gold. It's the modern version of the Midas touch.

@rene what did you tell them? Looks like you deleted your comment(s)?

@ShadowWizard yeah, I had a bunch of what doesn't work mean and that ended with Jingle bells.

@ShadowWizard @rene was telling them something they believed it could be categorized as toxic, while that was completely off regarding their actions seen.

Meh, bad flower, flower is bad

7:35 PM
@rene You bad bad flower, behave!

Well... there's a difference between "Your question sucks, edit it now" and "Can you please edit the queston to improve the formatting?" - and of course lots of possible things in the middle.

Yeah, it was closer to the former ...

buh... ton... ton of questions... leaving that for fun. ;)
@rene you surely have bad view of yourself! looking for flowers psychologist
Found one!!! :D

All in all it seems to me, that we even cannot ask for clarification politely, without the risk being accused to be toxic.

Some people just can't take criticism, even if constructive.

7:41 PM
But the world leading US president spills over toxic tweets even before their morning toilet, and is being applauded.
O' tempora, o' mores!

I can't really talk about it too much since I personally not taking active part, but want to believe that if I would take part, such negative responses won't cause me to stop.
@πάνταῥεῖ who said US leading the world? Think that role was taken away from them. ;)

@ShadowWizard Didn't you read their tweets?

@πάνταῥεῖ I don't read tweets, just follow the events remotely from our local media.

@ShadowWizard Me too TBH. Its disgusting enough :P

They sometimes post his tweets, or mention them, of course.

7:45 PM
That Joel Spolsky complains about managing a toxic wasteland is a very bad joke though.

Maybe he just try to earn some time.

@ShadowWizard That's why we're leaving them beyond ...
@ShadowWizard I'd expect Jeff standing up and tell: "I've ever been telling you ..." :D

I don't know what this was - it was 50 metres long and required police escort to stop traffic - at 3am on the country roads.

user310756
feel free to delete that last comment after reading - much like eating the note after reading... erm I'm sleep deprived and my jokes are not funny at the best of times

@YvetteColomb Twitter is where good idea go to get satirized. ;-) You just gotta be mindful and walk away a bit quicker than you think you should.

user310756
@JonEricson yep - I only joined recently I've been on and off it . I'll prob end up closing it again. It's not a platform I particularly like

user310756
it was more because my attention was drawn to the mod election and mention of me as a candidate (well me as in a woman)

One can beseech people to be kinder to beginners... or give them a way to filter out the questions from beginners.

user315433
Nothing interesting here, I just wanted to use the word "beseech".

Any more employees going on white male guilt trips, or is that strictly weekday activity?

A: Some thoughts on the moderation of comments on this stack

Jon EricsonI disagree with the idea that comments are for improving posts; that's what edits are for. To quote the help that can be accessed when adding a comment: Comments are used to ask for clarification or to point out problems in the post. Or, to crib from the help center, comments are like Post...

When Shog's away, the hedgehogs will play!
@JonEricson Can you please explain why Shog may have chosen not to act on this?
So you're saying this is a problem, but choosing not to fix it. If that's so, why did you mark this question as "by design"? It doesn't seem from this answer that not converting old links without the ending / was an intentional decision, or that they're supposed to be that way. Can you please remove the "by design" tag, and replace it with "declined"? This implies the correct thing, that you've acknowledged this as an issue but have chosen not to fix it. — Sonic Wizard Mar 23 at 18:47

@SonicWizard Cause it's not that hard for people to edit or suggest edits and do it themselves. (Or at least that's my excuse.)

@JonEricson But it's a moderator-only tag!

Oh. That bit? It would be an edit with almost no benefit. It's not like the code is still being used.
It was a one-time operation, it missed a few links and those links are eminently fixable.

@JonEricson But the tag is wrong!

Wrongish.

11:17 PM
@JonEricson Did you even read the comment?

Heh, I'm off to get some dinner. Maybe I'll figure out the dire consequence I'm missing in the meantime.

@JonEricson Wait!
That was a little pedantic, but here's one that's not: this bug report was marked "completed" but was never actually fixed:

Q: Questions migrated from other sites, closed as duplicate, and then locked show the wrong notice

Sonic WizardThis question was migrated from a different site, then closed as a duplicate. Later on, it was locked for historical significance. The revision history shows it correctly, and the vote arrows and flag option is gone (as expected). However, the lock notice for historical significance doesn't show ...

Yes, but this isn't completed in the sense that the notices now show up properly, but declined in that you say the above should be done so this edge case doesn't happen (so it won't be fixed). — Sonic Wizard Jan 20 at 4:11

Morning

@JourneymanGeek Morning!
(even though I still haven't gone to bed yet)

@HTTPS quite frankly I posted that question on anonymous post deletions because I'm upset by multiple instances of trolling. Close votes seem ok so far.
