It's apple vs orange comparison, since the current "about me" is very tame :S

Yeah, way too tame
I had to remove even slighest hints of nsfw, which I previously thought was okay.

11:26 AM
@Shog9 On recommendation, would it be helpful for you guys if I sent the CMs a list of suspected serial voting incidents via spreadsheet every week instead of raising flags for each one? A SO moderator suggested I report these to the CMs directly. What would be the best method to go about that without wasting any time for you guys?

@YvetteColomb how you know he's away?
looking for Shog-to-Yvette connection
lol

@ShadowWizard Shog is a cat!?

@HTTPS nine headed cat
@Unitato not in profiles
In some chat rooms it might be tolerated to some extent as it's also easy to hide/move.

@ShadowWizard confusing hydras with cats again?

@JourneymanGeek you mean like?

12:30 PM
I'm bore

user310756
d?

@YvetteColomb clearly he means he mutated into a instrument for making holes in various materials :D

user310756
@Magisch I think so

user310756
@Magisch don't worry so much about the declined flags, you're doing good. I keep telling you...

Declined flags aren't something you're just supposed to accept
They mean "change your behavior"
A declined flag means I should have known not to flag that

user310756
12:35 PM
no they don't

user310756
you're reading too much into it

@YvetteColomb hm. Well the joke was clones but that makes sense too

Thats what they mean according to official guidance and system behavior

user310756
it's just a way of saying hey you got it wrong on this one

user310756
@JourneymanGeek precisely!

user310756
12:36 PM
@Magisch well - maybe the guidance is a bit harsh

If I'm not making any overt mistakes that means I should have 0 declined flags

@Magisch I think what I said before probably comes into play - that even with the limited information we have on voting patterns, spotting voting patterns is hard.

>0 means I have mistakes to not make again

Hell, I don't even try and one of the other mods catches one every few weeks
I'd say listen to the feedback you get from mods, rather than absolute numbers

@Magisch they mean "you are one step close to flag ban but don't worry it is perfectly fine if one mod dismiss your flag and the next one doesn't ... it will stay on your personal card anyway"
also know as

12:38 PM
(also, I got review banned as a mod when I was trying to clear out our queues, and didn't want to unban myself so... everyone makes mistakes ;p)

Then one of the users told another mod and...

@JourneymanGeek I'm fine making mistakes, if they're my mistakes

@Magisch lemme use a bad analogy

The word mistake implies that it's in my power to not make it again

user310756
12:39 PM
@Magisch you are being a perfectionist - this is a difficult way to live.. yes some people like to strive for 100%, but it's hard to achieve and we need to be realistic. Human beings are not infallible.

When you're picking vegitables one at a time...
you're not going to pick up bugs

user310756
@Derpy it's warm :)

there's going to be a few rabbits, bugs and undersized kaiju getting swept up when you're doing it with a combine harvester.

@JourneymanGeek ah yes - good analogy

@YvetteColomb I did warn!

user310756
@JourneymanGeek next time warn us to have sedation!

I am doing these by hand

so, you have a methodology that often works off imperfect information

12:40 PM
it's just ... the information I have doesn't allow me to make better judgements

mods have less imperfect information.

I'm relying on suspicion based on patterns based on incidence I find using an exploit in the SEDE data scheme structure

@Magisch do you think it makes SO or the other sites a better place?

user310756
@Magisch I've done similar things and made similar flags - some were marked helpful, some were declined

@JourneymanGeek depends on how you define that
serial voting is a personal pet peeve of mine

12:43 PM
@Magisch well, How you define it is important in determining its value.

I make a lot of mistakes I just have the requirement to myself that I avoid making the same mistake twice

The nice thing with the suggestion of creating a spreadsheet with your methodology is CMs do actually have (nearly?) perfect information

I already make a spreadsheet
so this would save me time rather then cost time

which is good no?

If the cm's want to
A SO mod told me once that about 70% of my flags get escalated and 30% are either FP's or sockpuppets that mods can delete themselves
So it's entirely possible that the data set is too diluted to be worth CM time to sift through

@JourneymanGeek you got me into twitter.

@YvetteColomb Care, some of the SE bashing on there is truly demotivating

@YvetteColomb this is why I shouldn't get into selling illegal substances
@Magisch Actually.... she's partially there cause I was a little annoyed at a feminist ;p
I didn't feel like engaging the one who I think is trolling Jeff and Joel

@Magisch fun fact: some of them seem to be demotivated by our bashing.
@JourneymanGeek and again, little problem: even if she is trolling, what about the other users with similar complains in the reply chain?

@Derpy Are we bashing or criticising ideas?
There's an important distinction

user310756
12:54 PM
@Magisch I'm trying to get them to stop bashing and join

godspeed

@Derpy so here's the thing. I'm not particularly motivated to step up and get into an arguement, when I can take somewhat more concrete, practical things with the communities I'm a part of

user310756
there's utterly no point in complaining about something if you don't want to be part of the change

@YvetteColomb welcome to modern activism

If SU has a gender problem and you have good ideas to fix it, I'll help
I'll even use all the goodwill this fuzzy dog face has acquired over the years.

12:55 PM
I don't think SE has a gender problem, but I also voted for Yvette in the SO election

I don't think cooking or pets has the problem
If someone is rude on SU... well...
flag it. We'll handle it politely :)

If someone is rude at all well we have flags for that

user310756
@JourneymanGeek they're complaining incessantly - and I'm proof positive, that there's a better way to go about things if you think an organisation needs change. Besides. SO is just a reflection of a larger community--- and it does a hell of a lot more to control trolling and abuse than does social media

@Magisch I missed someone doing it

Some of those flags pack quite a punch too ...

user310756
12:56 PM
@Magisch thank you

@YvetteColomb mind you, you didn't win because you're a woman

user310756
Any issues in gender/race - whatever is being discussed about any site - is usually a reflection of a greater problem. The internet is a microcosm of a larger global community

just being a woman gets you nowhere in a moderator election. it's a high pressure process and people will sift through everything you've ever done. Any dirty laundry you have will be aired. Perservering through that takes more then being a woman

@Magisch I actually got a pass there

user310756
@Magisch well - I'm not sure it didn't contribute.. as I said I cannot control how or why people vote. But from my point of view. I'd prefer to be elected on merit than gender

12:58 PM
@YvetteColomb you have moderator experience

user310756
@Magisch of c - it's character

and that's handy in terms of the stuff outside the 'mechanics'

@Derpy :'( sad

Every time I'm the unfortunate target of someone being offended on my behalf it always feels so much worse then the person doing the offending's actions

user310756
well you see, I won't let people push me out like that. AND there's a lot of amazing people on these sites. So there is support, it's a matter of finding it and not putting people off by whining and exploding (as I used to)

user310756
@JourneymanGeek help me on twitter! I cannot figure out how to follow these convos

1:03 PM
way I see it you're making a more positive and bigger impact to the whole gender issue by being the best mod you can be then by complaining about it on twitter and feeling righteous by doing so

@YvetteColomb you need to click on just the right place to get it to show ;p
like not on the speech bubble
its... kinda bad UX

user310756
@JourneymanGeek yeh go help me man!

user310756
@Magisch tots agree. That was what I realised on meta in my last post. In fact I don't want to make it a platform - even in here. Just discussing it as a historical thing. In fact the change is not even about gender, but diversity and acceptance... something we all need

@Magisch again I ask. Does ranting about a problem decrease it gravity in any obscure way I don't get?

@TelKitty bacon kittys
@Derpy You're right, it doesn't.
Ideally one of the people with that perspective would come in here or make a post with arguments I can consider (and not just namecalling) so I can expand my horizon and more importantly a discussion can be had on the issue some people believe to be so pressing

1:14 PM
Point noted @ShadowWizard the details of my birth are now obscured from the public view.

@Magisch probably, they were promoted everywhere, with emails, banner, etc.

@Magisch well, even if those post are pretty rough and borderline rude - on both sides - .... I don't think that calling them a "crapfest" will encourage anyone to come here.

Well, if people throw insults (aka crap) on each other, that term is valid.
These days it became common behavior though, worldwide, so...

@Derpy seems to be pretty one sided tbh
the way they're portraying SE and the founders is exceedingly rude and I'm not sure I've seen anything in that twitter thread that wasn't low brow ranting or outright insults.

@Magisch I suggest you start reading the linked posts too. There are quite some "pearls" in there.

1:18 PM
I'd be interested in hearing the reasoning and arguments behind what they percieve to be such a massive problem that it warrants anything like this.

user310756
@TelKitty oh I cannot find my phone!

Is there anything called Serial Flagging so far?

user202362
I don't get why people get so agitated by a twitter post.

@Unitato this?

1:33 PM
Especially with spammy users, would I be rate limited for spamming one user too much?
That is a Zombicorn indeed
A bit of potatoness would make me.

@Unitato only if the flags are declined, you get flag ban.

@Magisch you could start with this one for example... Far more moderated and should not scare anyone. Link

But no, system doesn't care if you flag posts of same user 100 times in a row.

@ShadowWizard you forgot to include "even if the same flags get remade and approved by someone else at a later time"

@TelKitty it all depends who writes it, how many people see it, how many share it, etc.

1:36 PM
Well, I guess we sometimes forget that we're in possibly one of the most polite and most decent places on the internet, and that the rest of the internet is pretty much a steaming pile of shit.

user202362
people should have own brain

@Unitato nah, not steaming. It's cold by now.
unless...

user202362
Is it great? God created meat, all comes with own CPU (brain)?

It does get hot and agitated at times. I'm a fan of reading Facebook comments to controversial posts :D
You should see the lack of civility in there

user202362
like chicken, cows, pigs, sheep, dogs, cats and humans!!! ... all comes with their own cpu (brain)!!!

1:37 PM
@Unitato depends on who you ask

@Unitato reminder: this is the same place that had multiple chat rooms closed by the staff for rude/abusive behavior. And users wondering WHY the staff had to made such closures.

@Unitato too bad you don't know Hebrew, we have a clash between right winged and left winged people going on for years, and it only getting worse over time. Typical example: Person A posts in Facebook "We should investigate why this person who tried to commit a terror attack was killed by soldiers", then person B comments "Die in hell, traitor!" and lots more curses. And both Person A and B are Israeli, Jewish, and can be even neighbours.

user202362
1:44 PM
Oh noz!! Smokey is multiplying itself on the internet and soon it will replicate it self all over the web! :p

Compared to the rest of the internet, this is a shining bastion of impartiality and respect

@Magisch far below communities I had to moderate in the past.

@Derpy Where are these?
I'd like to peruse some of them :p

@Magisch first, I don't thing you would understand the language since they were no-english speaking communities. Second, too late. Most of us spread out to different paths after the owners of those servers made some pretty unpopular decisions.

One of the reasons I stuck around here is because here I can be free of being subject to death threats and doxing every day
And free of getting insulted on the regular for no reason
I take a lot of stuff for granted using SO so long but then I go back to reddit and 3 minutes in I'm like "oh yeah, this is why I use SE instead, this is awful by comparison"

1:48 PM
@Magisch you refer to the twitter post @Derpy linked to? Pretty sure that by "PRIVILEGED" she means users with high rep, who gain moderation privileges like editing, closing, etc.

same for imgur, tumblr, etc
@ShadowWizard I'm pretty sure this isn't it

And this is just typical rant of people who are frustrated because it's hard to gain rep on SO, really can't see anything more than that.

I mean I agree
but that's also why SO is such a great place to find answers
competition is merciless and quick, you either learn to become excellent or go under. It's a "sink or swim" situation when asking and answering, and it makes for an excellent and unforgiving teacher ... in the best moments.

Also there is the bad experience (in the form of downvotes and marginally rude comments) for new users who post bad questions, but that doesn't look like the case.
Anyway, neither of those are related in any way to the gender/location/race/sexual orientation of the user.
So any claim it's related is void.

@ShadowWizard apparently a lot of folks think downvotes are bad
or its terrible cause people don't like their ideas

1:52 PM
@JourneymanGeek true, but that's not the case with those twits we keep discussing here for some reason. :)

I like SO because above all it's reasonably fair
people vote a lot on content not necessarily on users

@ShadowWizard more or less, SO and much of SE is ruthless, pure meritocracy

@TelKitty some men & women just want to watch the world burn

I remember on mcf it was hard to partake in any discussion since people would ascribe so much more worth to who was posting then the post itself

1:53 PM
minecraftforums
I was a moderator on there for 2 years

user202362
@HTTPS because they are cold? I mean the trade war is a pretty good reality show to watch if you are really bored

@Magisch and we should have known that? lol

@Magisch actually the idea of people voting for me cause I'm the journeyman geek feels... terrible
and contributes to my imposter syndrome

@ShadowWizard no, you're right

@JourneymanGeek no different than people who blindly upvote Jon Skeet answers these days...

1:54 PM
It was very split there. Either people thought you could do no wrong and were correct because you're mod or the opposite

!!/alive

It felt like almost nobody considers what you wrote, just who wrote it
on SO i dont get that at all

funny. Same discussions, different rooms, so different outcomes...

@ShadowWizard that said ... aibobot got a HNQ and a bunch of upvotes on U&L so...

people address my posts, my arguments

1:54 PM
its not just the brandname ;)

@Derpy example?

@CalvT븃 You doubt me?

when I'm wrong, I can count on someone calling me out ...

@SmokeDetector Yeah I do

@JourneymanGeek well, you can use non-mod account "for real", no harm will be done. :)

1:55 PM
@ShadowWizard I actually use that at work, with non trusted PCs

I like the pure meritocracy of this place

@ShadowWizard thanks, but I prefer to not take any message in those room out of its context

I mostly use aiboibot to snark at kali linux posts and posted ONE answer at job -2 ;p

It makes me feel like I'm the person in charge of my account here, that it's me and my skills who matters, not the boring around stuff I can't change

@Derpy you mean SE chat rooms? If so I can find them myself. :)

1:56 PM
in theory though you could use be userRAND and use the premade, and variable ava if that bothered you so much ;p

Ahh @ShadowWizard we have our own share of stuff like these too haha
The India Pakistan hate continues since 1947

@Unitato yeah it's surely worldwide.

Neither side has any civility towards the other :(

@Derpy One thing I wonder and I can't make out between all the arguments, is the argument of the people criticizing SO so harshly against the nature of the meritocratic system or do people think SO/SE isn't meritocratic at all?
