@jadarnel27 I am honored!
@Derpy I... find it hard to follow subtle color changes. :(
@Mithrandir there was something like Hebrew Language proposal on Area 51, now it's totally gone... any idea what happened to it?
@TelKitty try chocolate coating, it can do wonders.

Apparently someone created Stack Overflow in my language, but the front page directly asked for sign in/up, then I closed the tab.

@ShadowWizard I am somehow tempted to point out that it is a common meme that males can't tell the difference between similar colors.

@Derpy well, to be honest, we can, it is just that we don't care ...

Just point it out: XKCD

@HTTPS ?
you mean SO clone?
SO real site also asks people to sign up...
It got better, it was more than half the page for a while, lol

2:14 PM
But I couldn't see any questions before doing that.

@Derpy I can see the difference, just can't name it. :)
@HTTPS oh. Link?

@ShadowWizard pertanyaanku.com
Masuk = login, Daftar = register
Worse than "the hyphen site" :/

@HTTPS well.... calling it "Stack Overflow" is.... verrrrrry far fetched. The only thing in common is that they put upvote/downvote arrows, as far as I could see. e.g. here.
Everything else is very different, full with huge ads, and as bad as any non-SO programming forum out there. :)

Could be an SE clone

@SonicWizard no it's not, unless you think the upvote/downvote is SE patent, which it isn't.
There are many clones which copied SO design almost perfectly, but that's not one of them. :)
This one reminds me of the programming forums we have in Hebrew, which are all REALLY bad, both in design and in content. Totally useless is an understatement.

2:24 PM
@ShadowWizard hmm... okay... plain, but if it works for them, then so be it~

@HTTPS works for who? Those who created it? With such bad UX and general design, I doubt they will be able to pay the bills much longer.
but who knows... :)

> Normal Human

user315433
Yes, that's how my small talk usually goes (the last panel)

user315433
@Feeds s/last/least/ or is this intentional?

user315433
2:34 PM
Not every language/culture practices greetings-in-question-form.

user315433
Is Randall saying they are not normal? or not human? :/

hmm... are you called "International Space Station" also? @SFTP

user315433
No.

oh, OK

@ShadowWizard that's the most important you think about SFTP?!

2:39 PM
@HTTPS of course, such a name has lots of weight

user315433
@Feeds Hi X! Is X your real name?

user315433
There, problem solved.

@SFTP Yeah, because that never causes problems...

Q: How to recover from being falsely seen as a racist?

Crazy CucumberSo here is the story: It was a Saturday night and my wife and I were sitting outside, drinking. We've already had a few drinks and we were talking, listening to music, in a good mood if you will. I see about 5 or 6 houses down from ours (we live in townhouse apartments, so the houses are stacked...

@SFTP sounds like an X-Y problem ...

@Catija the XY problem?

2:53 PM
@ShadowWizard Asking people whether their name is actually their real name. The only people I do that with are the call center staff who are always named "Bob" but sound very much like they're Indian... but I don't really even do that any more.

user315433
Good. That may be falsely seen as racist. Or heard.

user315433
I did consider adopting Bob or some such for coffee shop orders.

user315433
Given that the real name seems impossible to parse.

Starbucks employees will still happily spell it incorrectly.

3:06 PM
@Catija lol... well, this can be done as joke once you get to know them for a while, but yeah, otherwise it's pretty rude.
Like asking for age/weight/salary etc. :)

3:36 PM
@ShadowWizard yep

3:49 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ chomp

Metasmoke got trolled today

@Magisch Are you sure the tense there is correct?

@Catija If it's still going on it started off weak and got even weaker

4:15 PM
@Shog9 you have a doppelganger: stackexchange.com/users/13294179/shog9

and no listed account :/

@bjb568 Depending on your choice, you'll have to let me know -- I'll be in LA for college.

user315433
4:45 PM
I imagined you'd end up at Claremont after you said it's a SLAC

user315433
More specific guess would be Pomona.

user315433
Is this approximately correct, @hichris123?

@SFTP Yep, got it.

user315433
So far, exactly one of my coauthors was an undergraduate at the time the paper was written. And he was a Pomona student.

5:03 PM
Yeah, it should definitely be an interesting 4 years.

5:34 PM
@ShadowWizard @Sha what is your age-weighed salary?
@Catija dead doppelganger

user315433
@Feeds s/apples/spiders/

user315433
> How's your internal skeleton today?

How many spider apples have you eaten @hic?
@SFTP I would prefer to be asked about my intestinal bacteria

shermar ennelscant belivie tht i have superpowers everytime i act like i throw suminthe light go in and out but at frist i thought it was the hosue but no i did it again and happens and when i and i hold out my hand a feel heat and sometimes a little smoke

user315433
Some people have the superpower of correct spelling, but they are rare.

5:47 PM
@SFTP well, the guy's hand is smoking and what-not, so they can't really type

user315433
Has to type wearing oven mittens to avoid burning the keyboard.

Poor mittens

user315433
Nicolas is designing a 1-flag regex for ruSO but I don't understand his approach...

user315433
He took the 50 most common words in NLN flagged comments and regex-golfed them into вопрос[ов|а|ы|ом|у|e]*|ответ[ов|а|ы|ом|у|e]*|спасибо|код[а]*|комментари[и|й]*

user315433
That is, question, answer, thanks, comment with their inflected forms.

user315433
5:55 PM
... of course a lot of comments contain "question" or "answer". That doesn't help in deciding if they are useful.

Are you ... questioning their approach?

user315433
From the safety of the Tavern. I deleted my ruSO profile long ago.

well, that ... answers that then

A: If a person were to die on the Moon or Mars, would the body decompose?

keith maddernDoesn't matter your dead anyway and the body just a vessel of the soul.

user315433
He has a point.

And he used the wrong form of "you're".

He also missed "is" in "is just"

So... NaA and an f on their grammar quiz.

Went to Physics building to take a look at their exhibits on the first floor.... Physics department definitely has more to show than math.

user315433
An exhibit on the concept of mass says

user315433
> People talk about "loosing weight" when, in fact, they want to loose mass.

user315433
Something about a log in one's eye...

They're also using "loose" when they mean "lose".

user315433
That was my point.

7:38 PM
Ah.
Well, there you go, then.

user315433
> The clock displayed here looks like a pendulum clock but it's timekeeping device is a quartz oscillator.

user315433
Grr. Trying to live up to the physics nerd stereotype?

@SFTP I don't want to loose at all. It's typically painful

user315433

user315433
I was puzzled by this display of wood... is all this for docking boats?

user315433
7:45 PM
(Port Jefferson, Long Island, NY, USA)

user315433
If so, how do people get in/out of their boats?

user315433
Valet parking, I guess. Not in season now, there were no boats to see.

They buy a yacht ...

user315433
To me it looks like a cemetery of trees.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ 777,777
@Shog9 nice! So can you please do that to the OP of this question? @Glorfindel and @Mithrandir say it's a long time troll who post this same off topic question on several sites, then delete their account shortly after. Guess you can use your tools to prove this as well, if their word isn't enough. :)

user315433
Hm. Define "users" first.

@SFTP people who use the site?
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ on the contrary. When it's loose it's not painful.

user315433
Most of those use it to look up an answer to a specific question and close the tab. They are not here to take surveys.

@Catija how did you find that?
@Catija huh? What does it mean?
Is this related to Shog's blank clone? :)

8:19 PM
@ShadowWizard it's one of the accounts that's trolling Charcoal.

@Catija but what you mean "trolling Charcoal"?
I'm not really active there so not sure what you mean.. if it's chat, doesn't it require 20 rep to take part?

Reports blocked for 3600 second(s) in room 65945 on stackexchange.com.

8:37 PM
@ShadowWizard ... this morning they were creating dozens... not sure how many... SO accounts and then creating MetaSmoke accounts for them.

user315433
Which is fine, because it's something that doesn't affect main sites at all.

The Charcoal team fixed that issue, and then the troll found a way to do something that created thousands of new account requests... which has had the side effect of creating a very long backlog of Smoke Detector messages in their chat room, (new users added to MetaSmoke create a chat message in CHQ)... and there's thousands of them... interleaved with real spam reports.
... and with the 20 second rate limit, the end result is that smokey is way behind in reporting spam and posting spam response from the people who respond to them.
@SFTP Other than the SO mods having a ton of new accounts to kill...

user315433
They don't have to do anything with those accounts unless accounts do something, and then it's business as usual.

@ShadowWizard yeah, I did that hours ago.

@SmokeDetector great

A: Can I get a university teaching job with only a bachelors degree?

user90900I go to a decently ranked university and some of the lecturers for the first year computer science classes only have bachelor degrees.

user315433
That's what you get for choosing a university based on rankings.

user315433
That said, employing undergraduates as TAs (not primary instructors) is very reasonable.

I think it depends on the college you're in... the concept that professors have to have doctoral level degrees is sort of old for many of the "newer" subjects.
Heck, UT lets Matthew McConaughey teach film classes...
> Matthew David McConaughey (/məˈkɒnəheɪ/; born November 4, 1969) is an American actor, director, producer, writer, and co-teacher at the University of Texas at Austin, where he co-teaches "Advanced Producing: Script to Screen".
Sadly, he was not teaching there when I took that class.

What's the oldest SE site outside of the trilogy SO/SU/SF?

Math Overflow apparently.

user315433
Hm. That table is not always right concerning migrated sites though.

Migrated?

user315433
For Sharepoint it gives "7y", based on 2011-04-07 migration to SE 2.0. But the site existed since 2009. sharepoint.stackexchange.com/posts/1/revisions

user315433
@Catija SE 1.0 sites that were created using SE-provided software, but eventually migrated to SE 2.0 platform that we know and love.

9:07 PM
MO is still older than that.

Q: Ignore this question

Anton GeraschenkoThis question is a hacky way to create some tags for you to use. Move along.

user315433
MathOverflow and Sharepoint both fall in this category. The age is correctly shown for MO but not for SP.

user315433
Doesn't exclude the possibility of there being a site that's older than MO.

Hmmm... Sounds like a high-priority bug. ;)

user315433
ru.SO also started in 2010

user315433
Okay, looks like these are all extant sites that started before 2010: SO (July 31, 2008), SF (April 30, 2009), SU (July 14, 2009), MathOverflow (Sep 28, 2009), Sharepoint (Oct 6, 2009), Electrical Engineering (Oct 28, 2009), and Mi Yodeya (Dec 6, 2009).

... so... I was right?
MO is 2009, not 2010...
