@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ don't ah on me! And that's your daily ping so you won't feel neglected. :D

@JourneymanGeek I agree with flagging problematic comment, but still... is there really a penalty? I'm uninformed of this because I've never been a mod :x

@HTTPS I'll happily suspend folks for being dicks
or mod message them

@ShadowWizard I feel neglected when I get pinged

I've never nuked an account for being one, but .... Lets just say if I need to do it, I'll feel a small amount of satisfaction. Cause someone has been really bad.

@ShadowWizard he has 41k rep, so it's more logical to assume @Nog is their impostor

@Discretelizard Dude, how old are you? 12? What's this business of going around under comment sections of answers discussing how disappointed you are with me? Have you realized yet that the answers were wrong to the original question, or how much time do you require to do it? Anyway, I am out of this discussion and I won't support any "meta thing" on this website.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Look at the chat. Figure out for yourselves.

@Discretelizard well, a little scrolling didn't help, so

3:10 PM
@nbro Sigh. Take a look at what you just posted and tell who is the mature one.

@ShadowWizard can't see that either

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Scroll more. Or watch the one attempting to attack

Can you two just calm down?

@JourneymanGeek hehe, I know very well... I am devoted watcher of GoT. :D

Whatever. Apparently, you have nothing else to do all day in your life.

(As opposed to me. I wander around fixing things)

@nbro Sigh. I do agree that my comments were a bit uncalled for. I'll remove them, now that you got the message. Excuse me for being mad to use my flags in a bad manner

@Sha can't persuade myself to watch GoT

@JourneymanGeek the first being TL?

So, erm, maybe you guys can take a moment to read back what you said, and realise... its a bit antagonistic?

@JourneymanGeek yeah, it's like starting a fight in a police station.

and its the internet, and its not really worth argueing over?

How can it roughly be the second? It might be 2.31th?
@ShadowWizard now what's wrong with that?

3:14 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ XD TL fights are actually a pleasure to deal with?

Once someone goes "eerm, guys, you're mods. YOU CAN'T GET SUSPENDED! PLEASE BEHAVE!"

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ nothing, unless you're one of those who fight. Most likely you'll find yourself kicked out or put in a cell soon enough. :D

Fights in the hospitals are the best

@nbro Yeah, like wasting my time to fix everything. Notice my edits?

3:15 PM
@JourneymanGeek diamond can be taken away with few clicks... ;)

@ShadowWizard but its rare

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Don't worry, I'm out. No use in arguing with people that clearly are too angry.

and usually, most arguements anywhere can be solved with a good amount of perspective

@JourneymanGeek but possible...

mumble mumble . . . I'll mumble mumble your mumble mumble

3:16 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ why?

@ShadowWizard in theory

@nbro Oh and if I missed a comment you'd like to be removed, just ask

would be an epic, sustained burn down tho

@JourneymanGeek where can I buy perspective?

3:16 PM
status-going-to-buy-milk

@ShadowWizard that is the most important thing to do in the world, and it justifies a status message
@ShadowWizard dunno, Tolkien's world seems enough
And I'm not that geekily into it
Just shallowly like the movies
I think @SFTP withdrew from this conversation with disgust, which is not the same thing as apathy

user315433
The before-coffee kind of apathy.

@JourneymanGeek so how many perspectives are needed to dissolve the argument?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ at least 2, but the trick is to swap the polarity, then flux the neutreno dampeners...

Q: What programs, sites, applications of information technology can really be needed for people?

Bulat UsmanovNow I'm losing interest in programming because the tasks have become boring. I want to direct my forces into what I would have believed. It is interesting to me to create what would really be necessary for society. I want to see feedback. I want to understand what is really needed.

When answering, I didn't see any difference between Gerry, Alex, Sally, or Michelle. But I never asked a question... I'd rather scrutinize the Fortran source of LAPACK than ask a question on SO.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ that's... very different. Tolkien's world is clean, innocent, for children... GoT world... the opposite. :D

@Shog9 I understand many people don't really care about it, but I always get tripped up when someone makes that type of mistake or the opposite type. My mind has a background process that replaces "it's" with "it is", and so I read that sentence as "Taken on it is own that...". Then I have to backtrack and recognize that someone made a typo.

@JeremyBanks what happened to its author? He's gray, looking sick. ;)

@SonicWizard it's true, its very discombobulating

@SFTP Yeah, me neither on all sites, but I always try to act nicer. I have a working mind program to make me act nicer; the only issue I have is when to run it.

Noun: onomatopoeia (countable and uncountable, plural onomatopoeias or onomatopoeiae)
  1. (uncountable) The property of a word of sounding like what it represents.
  2. (countable) A word that sounds like what it represents, such as "gurgle" or "hiss".
  3. (countable) A word that appropriates a sound for another sensation or a perceived nature; an ideophone, phenomime.
  4. (uncountable, rhetoric) The use of language whose sound imitates that which it names.
There should be a word for words that cause the effect on readers that they describe

@SFTP Fortunately its it's easy enough to fix.

7:19 PM
@SFTP ha, IKR
@Journeyman is extremely apostrophe deficient, which isn't good for his health
If he's among a bunch of muscular grammar nazis

@SFTP I find asking an order of magnitude harder than answering. I wouldn't be shocked if there were a gender-of-asker effect in the rudeness of comments, but I would be surprised if it were large.

Some people just have "static readonly" mistakes, which is beyond their power to change by now. e.g. @Derpy has it with "mayor" instead of "major" - I stopped commenting about it long ago, and if done in posts, I edit it. (can't do it on chat though.)

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ he's renounced apostrophes. A veritable apstrophate

@JourneymanGeek can't see it in there

Most closable tags among the top 5000: agile, scrum, licensing, open-source, documentation, project-management, programming-languages are above 20%.

those first 4 have been in an socvr campaign and documentation is looked after by some members as I sometimes see rerquests for those coming by.

user315433
I expected that the output of the most common titles query would not change substantially over time, since one cannot create duplicate titles now. But... the current leader, "object reference not set to an instance of an object" (68 questions) was not even in the chart back then.

Or perhaps the duplicate block is more recent than I thought.

@SonicWizard you should edit existing answer, not delete and post a new answer. That's what we have the edit feature for. Plus, you replied to really bad question that should have been deleted, which it did. Shog's comment there nailed it really good.
@SFTP lol, sure. I was just kidding... ;)

@ShadowWizard It was tainted by two downvotes because of that paragraph. In my experience, if people see something with a negative score, they don't actually read it and consider that it might actually be upvote-worthy under their standards. I figured, since it was within a minute of posting it, why not give it a clean start?

@SFTP what day? Today?? Anyway, wonder if Adrianna is the only employee who has/had unregistered account....

10:42 PM
I once lost a privilege just for expressing an unpopular opinion. I don't like that. So when the system offers to give me back a privilege in exchange for recanting my opinion, I spring on it.

@ShadowWizard seems like a mistake in the account type change. should be registered

@SonicWizard it's wrong. Correct path is editing. So what if it's downvoted? Your basic mistake is seeing this as "tainted", "dirty", whatever bad context. Downvotes are essential for SE, and I'm surprised you fall into the same pit as so many others, thinking downvotes are personal/bad/hunting you down.

I find this similar to employers retaliating, or oppression of certain groups.
@ShadowWizard TBH if this was on a per-site meta, I would have edited.

@AdamLear oh. Too late to change? Or too minor, I guess, since she's no longer employee.

@ShadowWizard No, that's not what I think. I'm not too concerned about the votes. I don't really take them personally. What I don't like is the system, how people can lose rep and possibly lose permissions just for expressing an unpopular viewpoint.

10:46 PM
@ShadowWizard eh? why would it be too late?
I just want to check with IT first to see what happened since they take care of these changes, and if there's a bug... we should fix it

@AdamLear dunno, you have handy tool to change it?

@SonicWizard whoa whoa whoa, what's going on?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I deleted an answer within a minute of posting it because it contained a paragraph expressing an unpopular viewpoint. Then, I reposted it with just the bit that answers the question directly, and I still got downvoted.

10:54 PM
Well, he didn't edit neither his profile page nor LinkedIn. Looks like another surprise layoff. :(

...because someone identified it as a repost and commented.

@SonicWizard that's okayish

10:55 PM
And the more exposure it gets, the less okayish
@SonicWizard by the same person, I guess
Why is the downvote such a big deal, again?

@SonicWizard she got a point, I'lll indeed downvote based on that, if the answer isn't good enough to justify upvote.

@ShadowWizard @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ 10k-only: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/308383/…

@SonicWizard also, you really should not remove parts of your answers just because they are "not popular".

@SonicWizard Erm.
@ShadowWizard well, yes they can.
This is all too confusing

@SonicWizard saw it already, what about it?
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ of course they can, but better not... we should stick to what we believe in, not act based on the votes we'll get.

10:59 PM
@ShadowWizard my take is his take was it wasn't directly answering the question
Yeah, I have no idea what's the post we're talking about

I sometimes edit to clarify "unpopular" parts in my posts which attract downvotes, but think I never removed them.

@ShadowWizard such boldness can only come from a wizard

Let me say this again: if the system offers to give you back a privilege in exchange for recanting your unpopular viewpoint, would you take it? (This isn't what happened here, but it's actually happened to me on a different post.)

I have either deleted the whole thing, or left it alone when I'm obviously right.
Or stubborn

@SonicWizard no, I won't take it, because it doesn't smell good.
I'll take the hit and move on. :)

11:02 PM
@SonicWizard depends on how firm my grip is on the viewpoint
Sometimes the camera is shaky

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ because you shake it

No. I only shake milkshakes

I actually lost a privilege for posting an unpopular feature request. At first I thought I'd stick with it, but then I decided to retract it. Trouble is, it had already been answered at the time.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ ohh... I had a great milkshake a week ago... yummy.

Look, what goes on in my mind is "hey, I had 127 steps to go before I get to see view counts. But just because I expressed an unpopular opinion, I've been thrown back two steps; now I need 129."

@ShadowWizard Check your neighborhood for Russian spies
@SonicWizard that's still a very, VERY cynical viewpoint

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ nah, they won't bother to be here. We cause ourselves enough damage. ;)

@ShadowWizard then check for Israeli spies
Ugh, my fistula needle mark is itching. If I scratch it, it'll bleed. So I'm stuck in a very critical life dilemma

(And just to give you even more proof that it's specifically about expressing unpopular viewpoints that I'm concerned about - I recently argued that one of my downvoted questions on SO on which I put a bounty, which was on the way to being deleted, should be kept. Of course, I would stand to gain 100+ rep from its deletion, but I wanted it kept because it helped people.)

To scratch or not to scratch

11:08 PM
@SonicWizard oh. Well, to be honest, I upvoted it. (not now, back when it was posted. :))

I was 398 steps away from getting the ability to VTC. But just because I posted an unpopular answer, I was initially set back four steps to 402 steps. I could get those four steps back, but that's not really fair because if I did the exact same thing minus the unpopular post, I would have been 394 steps away, not 398. It's absolutely worthless.
And if I wanted to be 394 steps away, I could have just taken four steps, whereas since I expressed an unpopular viewpoint, I have to take twice as many steps.

two latte ^^

(Gives me an idea. Stack Exchange board game with cards. One card could say, "Post an unpopular feature request on meta. Move back three spaces.")

But meta already has more privileged people than it needs; it's not worth spending much time to as a special case. (Or so the thinking probably goes.)

@JeremyBanks I think @Sonic just love to have the power, which is totally understandable. :)

My pet issue is that I think vote counts should always be split open on meta.

11:22 PM
I never get my lattes decorated :-(

@JohnDvorak you don't pay enough

@ShadowWizard Sure, I definitely sympathize with the emotion.

It is not fair. That is unfortunate. But it probably won't change.

I need to order a cappuccino if I want art

@ShadowWizard No, you've got the power, because you've got the emeralds.

@SonicWizard I'm happy with my power... to be honest I didn't expect to have it back when I started using SE, but having it gives a good feeling. :)
But I won't be overly sad/angry if losing it due to downvotes.

@SonicWizard I agree with the gist. Downvotes probably shouldn't cost rep on MSE. On per-site metas, there is no cost to unpopular ideas.

Well, you've already got a comfortable amount of disposable rep
@JeremyBanks Did you see the proposal there?

Anonymous
Yeah. I think I saw a proposal for something like that before.

It's a good idea if we were building a meta site from scratch. While we're at it, we could improve the election system.

Restrict the definition of voting to that of main Q&A sites, and introduce a separate set of agreement/disagreement votes that don't affect rep in any way.
(for those unwilling to click)

But it's a ton of complexity to add to the existing system, which already works more-or-less good enough.

Anonymous
I, personally, would like to see it. I like the idea.

but if I were allocating resources this wouldn't be near the top of the list, in terms of ROI.

So many people want more honest explanations for voting on meta...

Morning

"Things I like, expressed in a way I enjoy"

"Bad ideas, expressed badly"

@Shog9 When did you initially catch on to the conversation I was having just now?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I spell as I 'speak' and apostrophies in it's have no sound.

checks watch

and spellcheck dosen't catch it

Not quite 9 years

@Shog9 Bad feeling: "Thing I like, expressed well" closed as duplicate of "Thing I like, expressed terribly"

modern dupe philosophy is better about that, though.

I prefer to close good presentations on terrible ideas as duplicates of terrible presentations of terrible ideas. Takes the shine off 'em faster.

>_<

We owe a tremendous debt to certain early meta participants who were obnoxiously blatant about the reasons for wanting certain features.
"I want private messaging so that I can harass people who've answered a lot of questions but not mine"
"I want to see who voted so that I can harass people who don't vote the way I want them to"
"I want all quality controls to be dropped so that I don't have to think about what I write"

In short, had terrible ideas and were arses about it? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Yep

11:33 PM
It's the best, really.

@JourneymanGeek As I said, if I see "it's", my brain automatically converts it to "it is". So when people misuse it, I get confused.

I misuse its, so its fine.

You gotta always indicate ownership. When an its doesn't own it's is, its taking poor care of it.

user202362
when you say "People's republic of" some country, it tends to indicate a dictatorship

11:51 PM
@SonicWizard It's got to be hard when people use the present perfect.

@JourneymanGeek How about "arn't"

I think I spell that with an e for some reason

@JourneymanGeek I blame dictionaries.

@JonEricson I'll stick to blaming dyslexia and carelessness, since spellcheck would catch that
@SonicWizard aren't doesn't sound like anything else
OH
its spelled with an e.

Edge caught that and corrected it, by the way

11:56 PM
heh, I run vivaldi
(so something quite similar, to but not entirely unlike chrome)
