@Shog9 can I bother you for a private chat?

@YvetteColomb you can, but I'm in mobile just fyi

user310756
@Shog9 does this mean you're really small?

Means typos

You just need autocucumber.

@Shog9 eh. I have 2 27 inch screens, and a mechanical keyboard, and.... I typo a lot anyway. It carrot be that bad. (Any spelling misteaks are intentional, other than the ones that are not)

@Shog9 are you able to set up the room

@JourneymanGeek You're also a dog. :P

... damn my paws...

user310756
@Catija he frequently makes the daily pet in the litterbox

@JourneymanGeek Hey, then I get editing practice by fixing all your typos ;)

@Mithrandir not only you

11:26 PM
Random question: In your local currency, what's a normal amount to charge for editing a ~360 page document for English errors?

donno. ;p

user310756
@Mithrandir vote to close as off topic lol

user310756
only do that when the quesiton is too hard

(and tbh, I actually sometimes go "ehhh I KNOW THIS IS WRONG BUT I DONNO WHAT'S THE RIGHT ONE)
or just am too focused on the stuff I want to write

@Mithrandir That's a very specific random question.

11:28 PM
I suppose it is.
Although I can't charge full price because I'm not a professional and don't have any qualifications.

What kind of "document"?

A novel.

Well, at least that's (maybe) enjoyable to read... I'd request a sample of 10 pages from the document to see how bad it is and base a fee on that.

I read it. It's kinda awful English.
The story itself isn't bad, but I'm pretty sure it was literally run through Google Translate.

11:30 PM
Is the author native to English or is it a translation?

It's a translation.
She asked me to write a review of the book, so I did that, and now I want to offer to edit it, because... it desperately needs it.

So... I edited the script of a short film I produced... the writer/director was Chinese... and it was a struggle... because if you don't know what they mean, it almost has to be a collaborative process.
And that was a 14 page script... and it took a day or two.

I can get the original text, probably - I speak Hebrew and English, but that'd be almost a retranslation - which is more effort than just editing.

If you're offering it, rather than them asking, your ability to charge would be based on them... I'd ask what they'd be able to offer and go from there.
It's sort of pointless to have a price in mind if they aren't interested or aren't able to pay.

Yep. Research is indicating a normal price for something that size would be 10,000NIS, which there is no way on Earth that's going to happen.

11:34 PM
$3K... yeah... probably not.
I think you'd be lucky to get $300 ... and that's a stretch.
How do you know this person?

Through my mother :p

user315433
@Mithrandir Freelancing has a bunch of questions with "how" and "how much", like Service charge per unit for basic computer repair/maintenance

user315433
Maybe ask there before the site gets shut down.

Hmm, I'll think about it.

user315433
How much should I charge my colleagues for fixing web accessibility issues in their syllabi? :/

11:37 PM
Does she have an editor in general?

I... don't think so.
This was really an amateur work, originally written in Hebrew and then "translated" to English.
I seriously suspect that it was run through Google Translate.

So, other than the urge to fix it, do you think it has merits?

I really liked the premise, actually.

The premise isn't all... though. If it's not well written (ignoring purely language issues)... it's not worth the time?
So... the main character's name... is "Senso"?

Yes.

11:43 PM
How does the description compare to the book itself (in relation to grammaticality)?

About the same. Some parts are better, some are worse.

Eesh.

Ano
@Catija My sister says she can make really good chocolate lava cake in the microwave...is this true?

So, based on that... it seems like it's less an issue of bad grammar and more about needing help with the flow of the language... getting into a structure... that synopsis is really choppy.
@Ano ... Depends on what you qualify as "good"... There are certainly many recipes out there for coffee-cup lava cakes... I've never personally tried any of them, but looking at the videos about them, they look like half-cooked brownies to me.
Again, that doesn't mean they don't taste good... if you put all the right ingredients together and get them hot, and put ice cream on them, they'll probably taste just fine.

Ano
Yeah, I think I tasted a "cake" she made...it didn't feel like cake, just a really soft brownie. But it still tasted well
I didn't know at the time it was made in the microwave

Most microwave cakes tend to have more of a soft brownie texture

user168476
because the microwave cooks things differently than a traditional oven

Yep. :D

@Ash microwaves are cool

user168476
That said, if you like that, then microwave mug cakes are nice because they're pretty quick and easy and less cleanup than a whole cake (and less leftovers)

Shorter cooking time doesn't allow it to dry out.
@Ash Since when are cake leftovers a bad thing!?!?

user168476
11:55 PM
@Catija When you live by yourself :P

LIES!
Cake is magical.
I take leftover cake to work and give it to my coworkers.

Q: Is this SE site / community dead?

UntitpoiI'm new to this SE site and as a geneticist i liked the idea to be able to help newbies and explain simple genetic facts to the community. But after one week following this site activities, I found activity quite low: e.g. 30-40 views max for a question asked 3 days ago. It seems there are not en...

What the hell o.O

user168476
(Although I then just tend to go "hello random friend here is some cake" which never goes badly)

As long as they're not gluten free... then you feel guilty.

@Catija you can leave leftover cakes to reproduce
@Catija gluty
@Ano I don't know your sister

@M.A.R. People like to declare sites as dead all the time - it's very rarely true. I like that someone pointed out that science sites sometimes take more work to answer. And sometimes sites kinda...ebb and flow.
