@M.A.R. its one of those sorts of questions I want on meta
its navel gazing. Its a potential problem.

> Our newest product, Stack Overflow for Teams, allows teams to ask and answer questions on Stack Overflow in a private space.

user315433
First time I hear that. A new name of Channels?

20 days paid vacation :O

user315433
> As our first Director of Information Security, your job is to design, implement, and monitor a security program that keeps our customers’ information safe.

user315433
Monitoring dangling modifiers is optional.

12:42 AM
The ad still says they have chefs... I thought they didn't

user315433
The pastry chef was cut, the others remain.

user202362

user202362
keep you safe - chicken coop's security director

user315433
Ok, not the first time we hear "Teams", but the first time I see the product name reused.

user315433
Teams v1 is sufficiently forgotten by now.

12:44 AM
No, both the pastry chef and the main chef no longer work there. I followed stackchefs on instagram and the account's now changed names to be "chefphilsireci".
OMG, though... he makes amazing looking food.

Ano
@Shog9 Do you use a script that makes you always "seen" some seconds ago here in chat, even when you're away? If so, why? I now always check the "seen" time before pinging someone, and I always see you "seen" some seconds ago.

no

@Ano or he just has a tab that opens up on his browser

Everyone in that stupid thing is always "seen" a few seconds ago every time I look at it... I think it's just not actually accurate.

10
A: What does the 'seen' status tell about users in chat?

nhinkleA user is marked as having been "seen" every time a chat window open in their browser polls the chat server. This is a bit misleading, since oftentimes the user has not actually interacted with that browser window for a very long time. Having been "seen" essentially just indicates that the user's...

12:46 AM
(I for one used to leave a chat window open up all the time till people got confused. And I don't need to, just got used to from IRC)

I nearly always have a chat.MSE window open. Usually chat.SO too. Occasionally chat.SE

Ano
@JourneymanGeek On a desktop computer? You're not "seen" if you're on a laptop computer with the lid shut, are you?

I have a set of rooms open at work and one at home... so I always look like I'm here, regardless.

user315433
I used to run a Python script pretending to be me in chat.

If you want to know if someone's actually around, you want something other than seen
There are two reasonable approaches:

Ano
12:47 AM
@Shog9 Last posted?

user202362
I leave my machines on when I am out occasionally

1. Go to their profile and look at the last message date.
2. Look at their activity graphs and see if they're usually active on this day around this time
If neither one of those indicates that the user is likely to be active, then you should probably not assume that they're active.

user202362
then I send and reply messages on my phone which I probably check once or twice during a few hours outing

@Ano I always have one low power, always on PC
for downloads, and a few internal/shared services

And them appearing in the room doesn't mean they're actually here, either... if they have their browsers set up to reconnect whenever they're using their computer.

12:50 AM
@Ano be careful about that; we have a ton of private rooms that we use for internal communcation within the company, so for example, if you look at Jon's last post you might think he's been out all day... But the "last message" field on the general tab tells the truth.

Ano
@Shog9 I was referring to the same, in the inline view when clicking on a user icon.

But. by the same token, someone could actually be around and just not have written a message recently.

Ano
@Catija The graphs work.
@Catija How was the fog?

if a user lurks in chat but doesn't say a word, are they truly around

foggy?
People need to learn how to use headlights in fog.
There are shades... I've had some rooms where I just refresh the transcript... :/

Ano
12:52 AM
@Catija The tower is, like 100 feet from my building, and it was just barely visible from that window
@Catija Or you could just open them in private windows, so you still get the live view, but without being logged in

high-beams + roof lightbar + spotlights aimed level straight ahead

I'd be happy with any lights.

(that's why I actually almost treat SE chat like IRC)

The fog wasn't really that bad... no issues going 70 on the highway... but on streets, trying to turn across traffic, half the people didn't even have running lights on.

I talk about the current topic (without @replying, which annoys @ShadowWizard) unless its past the scrollback... ;p

12:54 AM
@Ano I don't want extra windows. I'd rather refresh a tab.
@JourneymanGeek You also don't direct reply to specific messages.

Ano
@Catija Use Opera, it supports mixing private tabs and regular tabs in the same window (and is based on Chrome)
@JourneymanGeek Doesn't seem to annoy anyone else. I prefer it if people always replied, because sometimes I switch the tab within a second of posting a message

user315433
@Catija I see he also took @StackChefs Twitter handle with him.

user315433
Left about two months after the layoffs, it seems.

@Ano I tend to avoid replying unless there are a few messages between what I'm saying and what I'm responding to or if some time has passed. I personally am not a huge fan of excessive ping alerts when I'm actively using the room.

user315433
Also, I got confused by the use of "R.I.P."...

user315433
12:57 AM
> R.I.P CHEF!!! Your legacy will forever live on. Bon appetite @ New York, New York instagram.com/p/BeLaVKrl_qe -- Chefphil at 8:39 AM - 20 Jan 2018 from Manhattan, NY

user315433
Speaking of chefs, a turkey sandwich from 7-11 did not live up to expectations that were quite low to begin with.

Ano
@Catija Well, sometimes you post about multiple topics at the same time (like you just did a couple minutes ago) and I have to make it clear which one corresponds to which

That's fine... That sort of meets the criteria.

Ano
@Catija So what did you do for Valentine's Day, just out of curiosity? I just got all touchy-feely with my laptop (why I use Edge)

Nothing. I'm still at work.
Well, I'm leaving now... anyway.

1:03 AM
@Ano FYI, that reads super creepy to someone just entering the room
(maybe to folks not just entering the room, but I just returned so speaking for myself and anyone else in similar state of too lazy to read last page of backscroll)

Ano
@Shog9 Should I preface it with "just out of curiosity" instead?

:shrug:
I'd just as soon not know what you're getting up to with your laptop

I think it's the "got touchy-feely" part that's creepy... the rest was fine... to me, anyway...
Well, I'm sort of curious why you're so interested in my V-Day plans but... eh. You're curious anyway.

Ano
@Catija I think I said a while ago that I use Edge because it's the only browser with proper touchscreen support

@Catija yup. But I assume people keep up with ongoing conversations.

Ano
1:05 AM
@Catija I'm just naturally inquisitive.

Yeah... but when you're talking about "touchy feely" and computers... it... implies something specific... and it's not really "public safe".

Ano
@Catija Naw, a certain tech channel uses that in a benign way

this one?
cause cough context or out of it....

... I'm not part of that tech channel... so... remember that you need to consider the audience you're in... not just what people do elsewhere...

Ano
@JourneymanGeek YouTube channel, that was unclear

1:09 AM
Not everyone has the same cultural, or subcultural contexts we do.

user202362
so I have been looking at those mini excavators on alibaba ... and I am making those autonomous (toy) cars - contemplating the possibility of making autonomous excavators with the assistant of GPS and survey plan/construction plan.

Oh, by the way, @Ano you have an ETA on your stickers stuff? Did you get the info from Art?

Ano
@Catija Yes, I did. Might as well pay up now; the GBP->USD exchange rate is going up

Yeah, the sooner we can get the cash the sooner people get stickers... :D We're only waiting on three people at the moment.

Rob
How many people signed up?

Ano
1:13 AM
I remember transiting through London Heathrow Airport on the way to India six months before Brexit, and it was much higher

@Rob um... about 25-30... but SOBotics is sending some to people gratis. We're getting 200 of each sticker type.

user202362
I remember having ramen at London Heathrow airport, while waiting in the business lounge ... best ramen ever because didn't have time to eat lunch/dinner

There's still enough if you want to ping Art, though. He'll send you an invoice. I think they're under £2.

user202362
that was many many years ago though

hah
things taste better when you're hungry
its amazing how good a single oreo tastes after 2 weeks of cold combat rations.

user202362
1:22 AM
what's in the combat ration

erm. Depends?
I seem to remember some rice thing, or pasta, and dessert of some sort

Adult diapers? Why would you eat those?

and it was terrible cold.
@Catija .... Were this RA I'd be obligated to make a dog joke.

Hee hee.

Rob
@Catija Ah, bigger turn out than I'd have expected

Ano
1:38 AM
@Shog9 Why did you un-feature that announcement?

@Rob Finally can look at the stats... 32 total, three of which were getting stuff from Petter.

@Ano only needed to be up briefly
kinda bad juju to recalc 2-3k users and not make it obvious why
(not that most of 'em will see it or care, but... it's just polite)

user315433
imagines a bank sending out "balance recalc" notices

@Shog9 or will complain on MSE and can get Closed as Duped ;p

user315433
Writing yet another letter of recommendation :( but for an excellent student :) who is applying to transfer to another school. :( Black hat strategy?

user315433
1:47 AM

@if.... something something blockchain Gets buried in investors

You're right actually. Investing in bitcoin == balance recalc, in real time

@JohnDvorak more or less, yes

Speaking of Bitcoin, how fast is it fa... WHAT THE?

very fast.

2:04 AM
Rainy morning...
Something happened on Bitcoin again? :D

user315433
2:22 AM
Bitcoin is still the latest site to graduate, was 2017-10-09.

user315433
One of 5 sites that graduated in 2017; the others are es.SO, Ethereum, Data Science, and Arduino.

What's the latest site that got its site design (graduated rep threshold)?

user315433
Apr 9 '17 at 1:47, by Gerry
Still there... The last time a site design went live: October 5, 2016. More than 6 months ago... That was Signal Processing.

user315433
But at least we have stackoverflow.design now

> More than 6 months ago...

user315433
2:26 AM
> We should be writing as little CSS as possible.

user315433
You can see how creating more site designs would go against that principle.

Ano
@if.... Jin got laid off, remember?

user315433
There were no new site designs for > 1 year prior to that.

@if.... I'd assume they'd focused on careers (a bit much?)

New tob par

hmm, there was a few people on it (who don't work there any more) right?

Apparently it's possible to issue 10-year suspensions on Area 51 only

2:38 AM
@Ano roblox?

Ano
1
Crowd Machine

Proposed Q&A site for developers and users of Crowd Machine: an open-source blockchain-agnostic dApp development platform

Closed before being launched.

This user is suspended for 10 years on Area 51 only (whereas the posts on MSE say that such suspensions only happen network-wide):

Ano
@Shog9 Why is this possible?

@Ano cause... they can?

Ano
@JourneymanGeek What?

2:40 AM
and I'm pretty sure there's situations where single site decade bans are possible

user315433
Because Area 51.

user315433
Welcome to Area 51. Everything is possible on Area 51. The only limit is yourself.

I don't know why decade bans should have to be network wide...

Ano
@JourneymanGeek No, the MSE post on this topic says that suspensions longer than 1 year can only be done by employees as part of network-wide suspensions.

But A51 is on a separate code base...

Ano
2:41 AM
@Catija I'm not commenting on the merits of that. I'm just pointing out that this contradicts the MSE post in that case.

Rob
Well, Area 51 as I remember, is a completely different code base

@Ano mod bans are limited to a year.
and typically when a CM has to throw a decade ban, its cause someone has been horrible and pretty much isn't welcome
so it could often be a network ban, but but...
not necessarily?

Ano
1 min ago, by Ano
@Catija I'm not commenting on the merits of that. I'm just pointing out that this contradicts the MSE post in that case.

I don't know there'd necessarily be a case where they'd only want to ban someone from a single site in that case... but I do think that A51 is inherently different.

^
Lets say I kept posting new proposals for underwater basket weaving...
they'd want me to stop there, but what if my contribiutions elsewhere were valued?

2:43 AM
Next time, someone gets banned on SEDE...

Dupe of A&C... obviously.

Ano
A51 is probably on older code that allows for really-long per-site suspensions, whereas the newer code doesn't

(also its A51. A61 is strange)
@Ano or they just fiddle with settings we can't see ;p

@Ano Again, there's no indication that it's impossible to issue single site 10-year bans.

Ano
@JourneymanGeek When did I say that?

2:44 AM
@Ano I said it was strange
and amusingly typoed and left it in place.

Ano
@JourneymanGeek It looked like you were correcting someone for typing in "A61" instead of "A51"
> In order to issue a suspension longer than a year, you now must have developer access, and that suspension must be network-wide, there's no other way to do it.

Q: How long can a temporary suspension be?

devnullI ran into a user profile that states: This account is temporarily suspended to cool down. The suspension period ends on Apr 27 '24 at 7:54 At first, it seemed like a somewhat longish suspension period. Referring to A Day in the Penalty Box reveals: Depending on the severity of th...

@Ano #thatsthejoke. A61 strange cause it dosen't exist.

Ano
@Catija "that suspension must be network-wide"

@Ano So... that's the first time you've actually linked that and that I've seen it... so there's no reason to be a dick about it.

> , you now must have developer access
AKA you can more or less put in a PR to do whatever you need the system to do

2:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek tap 7 times

Ano
@JourneymanGeek ... and

and I think/feel that meta's kinda guidence not absolutely "this is how the internals of the system work"

Rob
@Ano Doesn't seem to always be the case. And due to the fact they were suspended due to sock-puppetry, this may even be the case here.

user315433
Tim Post's post is from December 2013. It describes the change to suspension protocol as being recent. Area 51 diverged from other sites long before December 2013. Ergo, no contradiction.

Ano
@Catija I was trying to find that post and at the same time had to respond to chat messages
It took me a while to search for it because I was using wrong keywords at first
@JourneymanGeek "there's no other way to do it"

Rob
2:51 AM
In any case... Why does it matter?

@Ano IE "no, you can't ask for a single site decade long suspension"

Ano
@Rob Because it's a contradiction?

and?
sigh let me dust off the civil vs case law arguement here

Rob
It's not really a contradiction. It may even be new functionality. That post is nearly 5 years old.

Ano
2 mins ago, by if....

The "roman"/european system of law's entirely codified. If its not in a book, its not there. That's what you're expecting ano

Hi I have just installed the iOS SE app and I appear to not be receiving push notifications. Anyone have this working?

In SE, we kinda have "statutes" - basically fixed rules like don't be a dick, but a lot of stuff is worked out based on common sense.

Rob
@JourneymanGeek Is there not a 'spirit of the law' clause in Europe?

You cannot expect everything to be perfectly written out - since we sometimes actually need people to decide what to do

Ano
@William Obligatory disclaimer: the SE apps are no longer under active development.

2:53 AM
@Rob not as I understand, and for the sake of this example, lets assume no.

:'( I really liked the idea of receiving SE notifications on my phone so I don't have to keep checking the site.

And I think that's a big part of the friction here. ;p

@William I've been using it for years and it works fine... are you on iOS 11? I've intentionally avoided upgrading my OS because they haven't make it compatible, as far as I'm aware... though I'm not sure how.

@William that's about all I use the android app for.

I'm on iOS 10 because of a silly reason.

2:55 AM
Oh, so it should work fine... have you actually logged in in the app?

@William I was going to link this bug report, but you're on iOS 10...

Ano
I mean, the Android app still works really well on my 8.0 Oreo device...I like it for that purpose

I will try the Android app. Thank goodness I have 2 phones lol ;)
Yes I'm logged in.

@William or alternatively this bug report

Works on Android but not the iPhone interesnting.

3:02 AM
@Rob singapore's kinda based off the british system with minor tweaks

@William Did you try reinstalling it?

Personally as a mod, I tend to work off meta + common sense + community consensus + ground truths.

Works after reinstall and reboot. Thank you!

"have you tried turning it off and on again?" ;p
@Catija +1

I wish people would stop asking me for my fax number.

Do you even have one?

user315433
The department does (I don't know who uses it), so I can put that number.

Ano
@if.... Who even uses fax anyway, when you can just send PDFs over email?

user315433
But the sound... the sound... oooh

user315433
Email doesn't make that sound.

Ano
3:16 AM
You don't even need a dedicated fax machine anyway...if your computer has a phone port, you can use it as one (Windows Fax and Scan)

Rob
@if.... That's merely a userscript away

Ano
One quick way to obtain helpful flags on SO: just hop in SOCVR and RC flag the requests others post.

user202362
best pick up line: can I have your fax number?

"What are the first words that come to your mind to describe this student?" They are discriminating against letter writers who suffer from Tourette's. :(

@TelautonomousKitty 'coz I will tell my contact number through the fax

Phew, another rec letter done.

user315433
Then again, writing those is probably easier than reading them. Can't imagine how the folks in Admissions deal with all this stuff.

@JohnDvorak or with a high enough resolution.... ;p

Rob
4:04 AM
@TravisJ I've actually toyed around with writing a DB adapter for LINQ2SQL with Linqpad. Turned out to be wayyy to much effort. But would be really nice

@Shog9 heh. That's a correlation I was unlikely to make.
But yeah. Roughly same idea

@gented That's not quite an accurate analogy - the ion is trapped and it's not going anywhere. (Indeed, single ions can be trapped continuously for months, and you do hear stories of groups giving them pet names and mourning their loss when they're eventually knocked out of the trap by residual gas atoms.) Here the ion is oscillating constantly in a thermal state of the harmonic trap (too small to resolve by the camera) but it is possible to cool it down to the ground state of the trap where it undergoes zero-point motion to keep in line with Heisenberg. — Emilio Pisanty 6 hours ago
"Now you can have an atom as pet!"

As Shot points out, we're working on it. ... you get one Shot and one Shog ... not sure if they are that interchangeable ...

@rene 9 shogs!

That is only a rumor. There is no evidence for the Shog1-8

out of bi(y)te, eh?
it's like.. Shog Overflow

Sir- you pun game is on point. I am however entirely unsure whether you should be proud or ashamed.

8:12 AM
I'm proudly ashamed...

8 Shogs a Shogging.
Pretty sure I read that somewhere.

You guys think the inbox has its own table in the db?

I think its probably stored in redis or something

8:15 AM
they have to track somewhere what you have read or not, in case they need to send you the notification email.

You think the inbox is purely cached? Then wouldn't it expire at some point? I feel like I can look at inbox history for a long time.

I don't think they store all the notifications forever
... clearly I've not had enough to drink
;p
There's prrrrrobbbabbbllllyyyy a table for the inbox.

"shog" contains the same letters as "hogs". Coincidence?
4

Nope

lol okay, but where does 9 fit into the hogs palindrome

8:18 AM
9 hogs? g ho9s?

@JourneymanGeek that is a long probability ...

@rene heh. I didn't notice I had about a 1000 pages in my inbox
and might have confused that with the notifications thingamagic

yeah, your user profile on SE.com contains your full inbox...
> Sep 27 [SO icon] welcome

@SensibleAlexander that might be pulled in from one or more per site tables.

@JourneymanGeek uggh, that would be a pretty expensive query. Don't think it is build that way ... Nick will curse you ...

8:25 AM
lol

@rene or just heavily cached.
But eh, do I look like a dev? ;p

Nope, you're good to go ...

I was thinking the top bar in box, which kinda would be the sorta thing you want transient.
;p

@JourneymanGeek yeah, that one makes sense to have in redis as you need it often in the UI layer. When it comes to processing emails out of the backend or showing the list on SE.com having a table is (probably) more convenient.

@rene on the other hand, having one table for all the site inboxes feels... odd.
well assuming each site is designed as an independant entity with some shared stuff

8:32 AM
but since inbox is global, I don't think it's odd

and not one big table selecting off a "site" field

it might be redundant, sure but the query you have to run for getting the data would need to be dynamic to cater for new / closed sites and I'm not sure how successful SQL Server will be in caching an execution plan that spans multiple databases. When you hit a performance issue, you'll need to tune 340 databases or so ... \
I give you it would match a DRY approach but it might hit a wall ...

I don't think that querying multiple databases with one query is something that SQL Server has any success with whatsoever.

err...
thinks
Its been a while, so I might be conversing rectally...
or a seperate database updated by triggers per site?
(I didn't even do that in DB class. Did a DB auditing module which I remember almost nothing of)

@JourneymanGeek eeewwww triggers ....
IIRC they have a business logic free database

8:40 AM
I'm not a DB admin either!
I'm not actually sure what I am at the moment! But I'm sure I'm neither of those.

Yeah, I like my DB like I like my scotch, plain.
2
Let the code rubiks cube the data.

Plain Old Database Object

lol
I got that one :)
Hm, apparently Atwood designed the original global inbox
Definitely lends itself towards being a table.

@ShadowWizard because the implementation of that property probably is similar to this:
public SPContext Current
{
   get {

@TravisJ I think SE lore's is he basically just did a lot of it. Some it rather randomly

That comment doesn't read as Serpent's breath to me...

hi @balpha :)

yo

@balpha Maybe you can solve the quandary from earlier, is the inbox a database table?

yo balpha

@TravisJ yes

#solved

I sit corrected?

yes

In the Sites DB though, i.e. there's one for the whole network, not one per site

@JourneymanGeek do you fetch corrected too?

9:20 AM
@Magisch usually when not sitting, I presume

Yup, since its global.
Thanks :D

awesome, we reversed engineered guessed the architecture out of thin air ...

lol

What's really annoying about the global inbox is that if I see a reply to my comment because I still have the page open, it still appears in the inbox later
I wonder if that could be fixed

@Magisch in 6 to 8 weeks, sure
or temporary

9:22 AM
Months.... gotta account for inflation
6 to 8 months :P
Weeks was so 2009

@TravisJ I would not call it inflation, rather increased productivity ... wait ...

Now that it is such a large production, it requires more scenes per act.

@rene gone

Our deletions are not that quick as the SmokeDetector team ...

9:29 AM
And technically not as urgent. And we barely have enough people for quick closes/nukes

one day, a new bot GarbageBin will accept 20k+ rep volunteers to automatically dv, vtc, and delvote a off-topic question on MSE...

@SensibleAlexander that's not allowed
you'll probably hear from a CM if you outright let a bot delete stuff automatically

yeah, that's true.... I only took the idea from Smokey's 3 autoflags...
So, if GarbageBin casted 2 delvotes, it's not outright deleted...
