6.0 is not too bad, richter scale is logarithmic, it's only when you are around 7 that's when it becomes a problem. Also depends on how the earth is shaking ...

The quake itself wasn't that bad. But our 5-floor office building is between 4 high rise buildings...

7:36 AM
@if.... lol, not really... things IRL for me are really different, plus I'm really bad at marketing. :)
@TelautonomousKitty pretty sure there were 6.0 quakes which caused lots of destruction, in places not ready for quakes.

and we're quite far from the epicenter. But the nearest city....

@SensibleAlexander ouch

user202362
probably should watch out in case it's a foreshock ... better to play safe

7:53 AM
@TelautonomousKitty nah, don't think 6.0 can be foreshock for a bigger quake. Hopefully.

So far I've gotten two responses to my survey: one person said they are blocked on the right site, and another said they posted on meta for help finding the right site.

12:42 PM
116 pending flags on SO

@iDebug heh, better have it locked
@Magisch all with possible sock puppets?

yeah

sorry in advance JNat

Why JNat? Mods can't handle them?

12:44 PM
most cases of serial voting need to be escalated
only CMs can invalidate votes. Mods can only solve them by hand when the solution is to delete some accounts

1:04 PM
@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard Check the timestamp. It's a history event.
@Magisch You should say sorry in advantage :)
@Magisch Can't obvious bad votes be invalidated by an automated script?
For example when A voted 20 of B's answers up in a few minutes, that could be reverted programatically and probably doesn't need a CM.

serial voting, yes. voting ring... I don't think so

What's a voting ring?

a group of users voting each other

Well, mostly true.
Serial voting is much easier to detect than voting ring, I guess.
@SensibleAlexander Are you Normal Human and Crazy Ivan previously?

@iDebug I'm the other one

Oh no. I made a mistake
You're Andrew T.
This one is more interesting. One single user repeatedly rolled back a post.

in the meantime, thanks to amazon basically showing it in my face, I discovered the existence of Nintendo Labo.
cardboard

@iDebug long time users know how to bypass the automatic system.

1:32 PM
@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard mod visibility of voting is odd
and even then we can't invalidate them
we could delete the user, and that's about it

1:45 PM
yeah, quite limited

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard Probably not very comprehensive. Only staffs know.

Pretty sure @Magisch hunted several "dirty" sock puppets and voting rings, maybe not all 100+ flags, but at least few. And blocking/nuking them will send clear signal to the rest.
@iDebug he's the meat balls inside the soup.
(best combo IMO)

This just in! Stack Overflow has discovered that UK programmers all move to the US after working 20 years.

US pays programmers better than the UK

user202362
especially top programmers

That's because gyroscopes are hard.

user202362
Oo just saw details of those graphs, but I knew this as facts for many years now

Its cause british programmers are promoted like wizards, by quietly disposing of their predessors.

user202362
coz tech companies are usually US based

user202362

but if you work in finance, UK is the place to go (if you are Australian)

The Laundry Files is a series of novels by Charles Stross. They mix the genres of Lovecraftian horror, spy thriller, science fiction, and workplace humor. Their main character for the first five novels is "Bob Howard" (a pseudonym taken for security purposes), a one-time I.T. consultant turned field agent. Howard is recruited to work for the British government agency "the Laundry", which deals with occult threats. In this world, computers and mathematical equations are just as useful, and perhaps more potent, than classic spellbooks, pentagrams, and sigils for influencing unseen ancient powers...

;p
bit of a fan

Yeah, hilarious stuff, that.

@tchrist you forgot some another very plausible option: thanks to the average developer work conditions and general recognition they get, they usually either ... expire or change work before reaching 20 years of expertise.

seems that SE has a pretty long "unclear what you are asking" pending flag queue.
Just noticed I have pending flags from about a week ago.

What about in India?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Can we talk about that survey a second? It's not really something we can really get behind unless we (as a company) do it.

4:45 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Please stop posting links in comments asking users to take your survey; that is not allowed. I know it seems like a harmless bit of research, but when folks see they they can solicit the SE community to take part in their survey/research/contest/etc, it became a problem pretty fast. No harm done, but this stuff is typically flagged as 'spam' and users doing it may find themselves no longer able to use the site. Please remove the comments you have posted in this regard. Thank you.

@RobertCartaino They are all deleted, as the off-topic posts containing them have been deleted.
I will remove the canned comment and survey link from my answer

@RobertCartaino We just talked about that, we'll be doing a more formal meta engagement survey (great idea, just needed to involve us in the execution of it, which we're going to work on now)

I've removed the link from my canned comment as well.

By the way it's by the same user that got suspended last week for possible trolling.

Ugh, why does the stack exchange logo open this "popup" now?

@Bart Didn't you say something like "95% of what I say is nonsense, the other 5% is suspicious"?

There's no way to prove that if you don't search through the history.

@Bart I'm just seeing if you recall. The actual message is here:

Q: Feature suggestion: How many minutes from the 40m are left to wait?

TechLordFor new users, these 40 minutes are the 40 minutes of death. That is an exaggerated nickname, but I adapted it from "BSOD". 40 minutes of hell could also be their name. It would be useful, if the 40-minute-error also indicated the number of remaining minutes. I hope my feature suggestion to be ...

Where is it stated that SE's policy is "Have an open mind"??? (just a really curious question)

@SensibleAlexander it is mentioned a few times: meta.stackexchange.com/search?q=%22open+mind%22 ...
I see both @Bart and myself have used it in answers. I guess if you keep repeating certain words people start assuming it is a policy.
