Wonder though, why it's taking several days to update/purge all those caches? Isn't there a list?
Also, it is temporary, as it breaks once new icon is added. But guess it's "meh", not really important.

Yeah I don't understand it either. Is there a non-zero chance of a cache picking up stale data again, after a purge has been done?

It should, in theory, only need purging once. Apparently that's not the case, assuming I purged the right things (which I'm pretty sure about). Yesterday was crazy busy so I didn't have a chance to follow up. Gonna try again today if there's time.
This is caching at our CDN, I don't know too much about it.

Varnish, right?
hehe
Aug 24 '16 at 13:18, by Shadow Wizard
@Oded if you got a minute, can you please purge/kick/nuke the varnish cache? Poor @gnat is getting wrong Sprites from the server and all icons are messed up for him.
Old times....
Anyway... as long as new designs/icons are created like once or twice a year (best case) it's really not a big deal.

@ShadowWizard Fastly? Isn't that where the CDN is?

> vary:Accept-Encoding,Fastly-SSL
via:1.1 varnish
both, no idea how it works exactly
Maybe Fastly is the host and Varnish is the provider?

4:08 PM
ah, Fastly uses Varnish for their cache.
That makes sense

I blame Varnish.
ohhhhh lol

I blame Fastly
so all blame is applied

Yup. Case closed.

Another mystery solved by the Heroes of the Tavern!

OBJECTION!
circumstantial evidence at best

aw c'mon, raising objections isn't contempt of court

This ain't court here, mister. :D
It's a place ruled by flowers, floating heads and... other things.

4:14 PM
With a meme image. Gotcha.

nope, a full generator. I spared you the original flash animated version.

It's always a roller coaster of emotions when you forget you joined a new site a few minutes ago, and see the +100 rep notification

O_o
@Stijn try joining 100 sites. ;)

You only need 91 sites

@ShadowWizard yes, as I said it is flash based. Had to resurrect the mummy of IE to get that screenshot.

4:18 PM
Firefox still has Flash support

@JohnDvorak yep, but you have to install it. IE avoids you the choice.
So, since I already had the forced version in IE, why to install it on firefox/chrome?

Aren't you afraid of viruses/malware crawling through the Flash to your machine? @Derpy
I'd expect this is totally possible, especially with IE which security isn't really on its top priority list.

I wonder if IEedge on android is going to be just as insecure

@ShadowWizard who said this was my machine (or at least the main one)?
Anyway, even without my level of paranoia, Flash is utterly broken nowadays.

Anybody feel like playing with crayons for a chance to win some swag tomorrow?

4:25 PM
And I remember at least one case of malware distributed by malwertising inside a flash game
@TimPost switching from .svg hats to user drawn ones?

@TimPost yes!

Crayons \o/

@TimPost Are the crayons provided?

@balpha Hi, can you take a look, or respond, to this? We've been flagged/pinged/notified multiple times about it

Q: Unusually long username causing comments to extend outside the the comments box

paracetamolI happened upon this question (from the HNQ list). Most of the comments have extended beyond the comments box, and overlapped with the HNQ list. Gut feeling: The super long username (apparently reads "Peace be upon him" in Arabic, over and over) is causing the weird rendering; but other c...

Can the reason for user deletion made public?

Yes. Particularly if it was a self deletion.

Isn't it a matter of privacy?

No? As long as you aren't delving into why they self deleted... that's private unless they choose to share. But it's fine to clear up that it wasn't due to moderator action.

okay. Thanks

Why should the mods be tacitly "at fault" because they can't clarify that the user chose to remove their own account? Also... mods don't really ever delete accounts of established users... they just get longer suspsions, so, really... no one should even be assuming the mods did it.

6:37 PM
Yes.

@TimPost sure :P For real?

6:52 PM
@Mithrandir I'm trying to decide if it's going to be an art version of animuson's written swag contest from... two years ago?

We are aware non-logged in users are unable to view #Stackoverflow and are working on the issue

That will teach them. Who logs out? Ridiculous

Well... you can't.

Q: Why are the icons in the Hot Network Questions scrambled?

tpg2114For the past few days, the icons in the Hot Network Question bar have been wrong. Some are okay, but others are not, which makes me think maybe an index is shifted somewhere. It looks like this was a problem before (Wrong icons in the "hot network questions" column) but it seems to be occurring a...

:)
Also... what's up with switching the blog back and forth?

So, does this happen every time a new site goes into private beta? And what about when they close down startups?

@ShadowWizard what do you mean?

@Catija no, pretty sure only when a "real" icon is being added, i.e. new site design. Otherwise we would have seen lots more of those bug reports.

it'll happen again when we down startups

A: Broken content in stackoverflow.blog

Rachel FerrignoThanks for pointing this out. We migrated a few times between Wordpress and Jekyll over the years, which likely caused these changes. I'll fix them shortly.

10:01 PM
So it doesn't have to do with iota?

it does

> We migrated a few times between Wordpress and Jekyll over the years

@ShadowWizard Wordpress -> Jekyll -> Wordpress

And now Jekyll again, no?

no

10:02 PM
hmm... for some reason remember different footer on the blog not long ago

yep, used to be different

@Catija you won't get more downvotes there than what I got for ranting about the Winterbash moon.... ;)
Luckily for me, I keep the app related rant to comments and chat (mostly) so it can't be downvoted. :D

chat really does need more downvotes

More?

yes

10:08 PM
@Shog9 -1 can't downvote to show my disagreement.

You got some magic tool to downvote now? @Shog

@ShadowWizard It'd be great if Brian or Kasra answered the question saying the same thing I did :P Also, the moon is pretty.

@Catija to be honest, I did not realize it's a moon until someone pointed it out. Yes, I am that dumb. o_o
:P

I was too distracted by clicking the window lights on and off.

But even knowing it's a moon, I would still ask to change it... it's really too distracting and makes me think it's clickable. :D

10:11 PM
Make the moon turn off when I click on it, just like the windows.

should go through the phases

Oooh, that would be cool... to match it up with the actual moon.
Though, the SE logo would be difficult to see when it was new.

lol
Still... I prefer having the snow flakes follow the mouse, like they did two years ago if I'm not mistaken... @balpha any chance it will be done? :)

@ShadowWizard I should have posted on MSE instead of MSO it seems :p

Q: The 2013 survey results blog post has a very low-res image

StijnThe image containing the results on https://stackoverflow.blog/2014/02/19/2013-stack-overflow-user-survey-results/ is broken, its size is 137px by 1024px.

@ShadowWizard I think it was more like four years ago.
Also, I'm not actually sure it's a moon ;p

10:18 PM
@ShadowWizard They're just random, right?
@balpha No, it's a batsignal. :P

@Catija the flakes? Yup. When they followed the mouse they also formed a unicorn after a while. It was cool.
@balpha time flies by...

I think the one this year is really pretty.

Very peaceful.

@Stijn yup
@Catija the logo is nice, yes, but that yellow something just seems out of place. :)
@balpha who is the designer, if I may ask?

10:22 PM
@Catija Peaceful is nice, but I'm still very fond of the physically-almost-accurate stick figure snowfight I did two years ago
to be fair, there was a way to make them stop fighting and sit down forming a heart shape

Ohhh yeah, those tiny snow people... they were the best, no doubt.

A: The Quest for the Winter Chickens of the Bash

SPArchaeologistWith original credit to Doorknob for providing the picture, I can confirm that the heart shape is indeed real (unlike the chickens, those were a troll by Telkitty). Thanks to THelper suggestion, I can confirm that the trigger seem to be related to clicking (on the head?) of the stick figures: ...

@balpha ^

user315433
Those were great, especially considering the size of JS (minified but still).

Yeah I made it really hard to reverse engineer how you actually triggered the heart
I don't think anyone found out (you just had to keep the mouse cursor in a certain area for long enough, no clicking necessary)

@balpha really?? lol... :D
Any other Easter eggs we missed? @balpha

I can confirm that there were no chickens.

10:31 PM
buh... @Telkitty was probably super thrilled by her successful trolling. ;)
...

@ShadowWizard there was a CSS rule that changed a position to relative on :hover, causing a change in positioning parent for a different element, and the JS measured the relative position of that other element, adding up the numbers over a certain amount of frames to see if it passes a threshold
Or something like that
A very elaborate way to check if you kept your mouse cursor over the snow fight for 45 seconds

head spinning
:)
Well, it worked.

Hi, I'm balpha, welcome to Jackass!

You can always look in your source code to know for sure what you did there, no?

@balpha I remember that!

10:37 PM
@ShadowWizard Yeah I could. Although code that's meant to be undecipherable when minified isn't exactly always clear when not minified :)
Anyway, I don't always put in easter eggs, but when I do, they're often too well hidden
By the way, I'm very disappointed that with all those Unicoin auto-miners, nobody noticed that the rock ids were valid Dogecoin addresses.

Are there Easter eggs this year?
Is it intentional that "unicoin" is one letter off from "unicorn"?

@Catija depends on my motivation, creativity, and time :)
@Catija yeah, the working title was StaxCoin, but the someone noticed the unicorn connection, and that's what we went with

@balpha Oh, you mean you continue to edit it?

not the countdown, but the final site is still in the works

Ah. Gotcha.
