Never understood Sportsmanship badge. Why would I post an answer to a question that's already well answered? In particular, why post if I don't think that my answer is better than others? And if I think so, why would I want their answers to be promoted over mine?

user315433
The point is moot most of the time, because there normally aren't any competing answers to begin with, and I try to answer thoroughly enough so there won't be any in the future.

I think just keep the Stack Exchange network logo as a site switcher if it's present, honestly. We've got the following requirements: it should be clickable [web convention], it shouldn't point to the Stack Exchange network homepage [above], it shouldn't point to the current stack site's home page [above]. If it's a clickable site switcher it fulfils all of those. As a bonus it means that for high-rep users and moderators, every icon on the right is notifications. (For lower-rep users there's still Help.) — doppelgreener 9 hours ago

Step 1: stuff buttons wherever they fit, to create a merged sticky topbar.
Step 2: try to pretend the same order of buttons makes sense for a non-merged topbar.

in Mathematics on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 9 hours ago, by Typhon
@bwDraco just so you are aware, I was under a chat ban until last night or the night before for falsely admitting to the flag spam at which point shog said "no you didn't" and gave me a one week timeout since apparently falsely admitting to something to calm the chat down isn't appropriate. Alrighties? It was last week and is in the log. So.... yeah I think you both need to back off. When the staff literally bans me for confessing because I didn't do it it should be pretty obvious.
sigh
Who is responsible at this point?

TL;DR? (or are you directing it only for @Shog?)

1:41 PM
@bwDraco stress is a bad bad enemy.

@bwDraco the MatheMatics

No, no.
It's an ongoing dispute.

@bwDraco well all flags are logged so any mod can easily see who abuse them. Don't see the problem. If a mod said that user abused flags, that user abused flags, no matter what he/she says.

It's in chat.

He can tell 100000 times "I didn't do it", it does not make it correct.
@bwDraco chat flags aren't logged?

1:44 PM
@ShaWizDowArd try to indicate number of 0's. eg. 100000(5 0's) for easy reading
@ShaWizDowArd ask to Andy. he's here

Chat search is broken again :(
It's returning only very old results.

any case, ending the "dispute" is pretty easy:
option 1) **he did it**. Shog can easily point out that he was sarcastic when he said "no you didn't" and the story ends here, probably a new story start with the user calling out Shog for being a liar
option 2) **he didn't do it**. Shog can easily point out that he WASN'T sarcastic when he said "no you didn't" and the story ends here, probably a new story start with the user calling out Shog for suspending him for being sarcastic
any in both cases there isn't much for us to discuss here. Or to care for.

This becomes more like logic puzzle problem...

Looks like something happened last week that I missed:

A: Advanced search API not returning results

Dean WardOh dear. We moved over to a new set of Elastic code on Friday afternoon and, well, we forgot to deploy the API project to production. That means it was running against an old Elastic index that hasn't been updated since Friday. I just pushed the button to deploy the project and your API request ...

So same as with API, most likely forgot to deploy this for chat.

@bwDraco ok, so first off... When someone's trolling chat, giving them TONS OF EXTRA ATTENTION doesn't exactly discourage them from trolling chat.
SECOND, Typhon isn't abusing flags. He's just saying shit to keep you chasing your tail.

Such language, Shog...

The user who was abusing flags last week is an old, long-time Math troll who pops up now and then but generally has little or no activity.
And I say that only because such a description applies to a sufficiently-large group of people as to make identification difficult :-,

"Math troll" hmm...
That topbar announcement didn't exactly draw overwhelming support... meta.stackexchange.com/questions/300829/…

@Magisch no, sorry. it's on my list, but trying to get Documentation shut down has been eating pretty much all of my time.

3:16 PM
@AdamLear lol... "Documentation is now considered a waste of resources... but we have to spend additional resources to kill it."

The irony isn't lost on me :)
To be fair, the bulk of the work has been fixing a few things with reputation, not strictly speaking Docs-related.

@Shog9 Ah well. I guess I won't pursue that further. The problem was that the person in question could not be accurately determined.

@canon eh. Sometimes things need to be said, as they ned to be said
@bwDraco see flag, reject, game over ;)
unless its valid.
then accept flag.

Case dismissed. I won't intervene like this any more.
I'll continue to handle chat flags, but I'm not going to try to track down the responsible user.

Also, without knowing the room, its hard to do things like that. Something us mods sometimes have trouble with too.

Another lesson learned, another step towards being mod-ready.

3:37 PM
You're in a room with 3 people:
- 1 of them always lies
- 1 of them usually lies
- The other 10 people in the room also frequently lie
You may ask unlimited questions, but they may remain unanswered.
Which door contains the goat?

the one with downgoat of course...

@Shog9 Well, what's the right way to handle flag abuse?
Escalate to a mod or CM, or what?

2 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
@bwDraco see flag, reject, game over ;)

Pretty much

What if it's ongoing and systematic? Should I just ping whoever mod happens to be around? I won't intervene directly beyond dismissing the flags.

3:39 PM
Chat moderation's either massive social engineering, or dealing with things quickly and forgetting.
Chat trolling is less fun if nothing happens

Well, this was one of those cases that straddles the line between trolling and malicious behavior requiring mod intervention.

Was it?

user202362
@Shog9 kitty will choose the room with the person she wants to maul most

@JourneymanGeek: So, what's the best way for me to grow up and become mod-ready?

Stop worrying about being a moderator ;p

user202362
3:42 PM
I feel a surge of unwarranted happiness again

@JourneymanGeek I see it as a long-term thing, but I'd like to get these issues out of the way. What's my main issue in chat?

To me the ethos of flag handling is "Ok, Someone thinks I need to look at this. Looked at. Actioned, next!"

...and something went wrong.

But that's a thing. I put on my mod hat, and go all official only when I need to bite someone in the ankles.

I think my biggest issue is escalating things unnecessarily.

3:44 PM
See "massive social engineering"

No matter whether you're a mod or not, summoning a mod or using mod tools (including flags) are an absolute last resort, except in blatant cases.

See, now you're taking it seriously, and making a pronouncement.

Drawing too much attention to anything, whether it's my own interests (monologues in RA) or a troll who's disrupting chat, is not the best solution.

Well, if you're aware of it, feel free to change it.

user202362
rent from tenant has not reached kitty's account, less happiness ... thank you, slow bank

3:47 PM
@Telkitty UNLEASH THE BADGERS!

So... I think the most fundamental issue is impulse and emotional control. If I learn to stay calm and not yell "MOMMY" whenever something happens or constantly demand attention, chat will run more smoothly.
> feel free to change it
The problem is that the matter is vastly more complex than it seems. It's not as simple as it appears.
There have been incremental improvements over the last several years, but they're minimal.

Well, if you're self aware enough to say something is a problem, yet are unable to change it...
(ok, fine, my spelling is Still terrible :p but otttheerrrwisseee)

The issues were at their worst in early 2016 FWIW, culminating in a suspension, but at least that's behind me.
@JourneymanGeek This sort of sense of humor is something I don't have.

@bwDraco one does not acquire a sense of humour. Even if you rob a clown.

My not having a sense of humor has led to disruptions in chat several times in the past. What's the best thing to do?

3:50 PM
Stop taking it so seriously?
In fact, stop taking being serious so seriously.
I'd say listen more than you talk, but I'm the last guy to say that. ;p

Learn to relax. That's the biggest thing that needs to be changed.
With that said, it's abundantly clear what the problem is.
Taking things too seriously and demanding too much attention, both of which point to a emotional control problem, are what need to be addressed. I guess there's not much more to be discussed.
Alright, back to our regularly-scheduled programming...

@canon most changes are... unpopular ;p
