@bjb568 :/

4:18 PM
really annoyed with a person's behaviour in SO
no SO mod here?

Not I....

@SagarV flag and move on please

already raised 2 on 2 different places.
this action alone is not a reason for a flag.

@SagarV as mentioned before, flag for mod attention and move along. The SO mods are not at your beckon call

chat ban incoming

4:20 PM
@bluefeet I didn't pinged anyone. If anyone roaming they may see the message

So, QQ - What gets discussed in the Town Hall meetings?

@CanadianLuke what? is it over?

I saw a notification it starts in around 2 hours

hmm
the message I added last time
It is night here (9'50 PM)

It starts at 11:30am my time... 2 hours

4:23 PM
did you took enough pop corns and coke with you?

@SagarV then it is unclear what you want the mod to do? Comment on your behalf? Hold your hand while you sort out your problems? Advice how to handle? If anything look on MSO for similar cases, open a post if none apply or shrug it off and move on.
6

@CanadianLuke they won't provide it.

I got my lunch bag here! Lol

It's heavy raining outside. I have to leave office. trapped

Is the hot meta posts on SO stale for everyone else or just me? I mean that sitemap.xml post is 2 days old by now.

4:25 PM
Where are you from...? Eastern Europe?

@CanadianLuke are you asking me?

Sorry, meant that for @SagarV

Good, the answer will be no ...

@CanadianLuke India
Where r u from
Canada?

Good guess :P Lol

4:29 PM
yeah. I didn't get any clue from your profile name. I used my sixth sense. :p Lol
when Shog came here, can anyone ask him to choose a better time for this?

@ShadowWizard Nicolas has been doing this for a while now, though most are in Russian (for obvious reasons)

ah shog, ^^ /CCed to you

What time would be better?

what is the time now at your place

user310756
@Shog9 can I have a reality check do you think this is ok on the site?

4:34 PM
@Derpy unity Web player is retired isn't it?
Or maybe just in Chrome

@YvetteColomb pretty ignorant but par for the course in an election

I have heard worse
I did not even try this time ;-)

user310756
@Shog9 I've had two flags declined. Is it ok to leave something there that is openly insulting me? It's leaving it there, that's bothering me

user310756
If I left that under another candidates post, it would be flagged and deleted

it's not openly insulting you

4:36 PM
^ that

@Shog9 it'll be 11.30 PM in India. a 9'O clock is Ok. Because I leave office at 10 PM

user310756
well it is, but it's one of those things that never ceases to flabbergast me on this site. There seems to be a selective measure of what can be said to whom by who

well I guess that settles that

user310756
@Shog9 thank you! that is what I wanted

4:42 PM
@Shog9 very good
@CanadianLuke Canada buddies!

Yay! I'm not the only one in an igloo!

@YvetteColomb I read that comment as an invitation to defend yourself. It was a soft toss. You should have just crushed it and left it there for others to see.

Actually, it's around 30 C right now... Very hot for what I'm used to

@Shog9 oh, while you're here, do you think a community ad featuring an image of a board game board is okay?
It did say it had an attribution license so... Maybe I should put a lil watermark or just delete it?
@CanadianLuke 22 here. Been hot though

user310756
@canon I don't think people should be talking like that on the site. It's as simple as that. I would (and have) flagged similar comments aimed at others.

4:46 PM
@cazc_941 I Am Not A Lawyer

@Shog9 probably best to just scrap it then, nobody cares about that site anyway
Hue

I think it's entirely reasonable to discuss someone's public history of reviewing on SO in the moderator election for SO

@YvetteColomb now that I will agree with, at least

@enderland It is. The original comment had something to the effect of, "based on your reviews you're not a programmer and should be moderating Wikipedia"
one of the SO mods removed that

oh
I clicked the link fairly close after it was posted and it didn't have that, I guess

4:49 PM
@YvetteColomb Unless I was looking at a completely different comment (the one in which he was questioning your review process), I didn't see anything wrong other than the implication that you may be doing something wrong in review queues. In the course of an election I'd expect those kinds of questions, even unfounded. The way you deal with them (censorship?) is actually a pretty important measure of your character. Was I looking at the wrong comment?

user310756
this is a whole issue of what is acceptable on the site and I don't see eye to eye with some people - others yes

@cazc_941 I have an excuse in my province... Lots of forest fires. The hottest I've seen so far is 39 C

user315433
@YvetteColomb "on the site" or "on the election page"?

user310756
@canon the comment has been redacted. It was insulting to me and to wikipedia (sounds funny)

user315433
We don't discuss people on the SO proper, period.

user310756
4:50 PM
@Alex under the questionnaire answer

user315433
But the election page is exactly for that.

user310756
@Alex nowhere on this site is to insult people

user310756
sorry I don't abide by that

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think (hope?) @YvetteColomb was talking about a previous iteration of the comment, which apparently was simultaneously edited and their flag declined

4:50 PM
@YvetteColomb by whom?

user315433
The comment sounds rude from what I hear, and I'm happy it was removed.

user315433
I decided not to read the meta questionnaire, mostly because of the comments thing.

> I've looked at your "reviews" on SO - and this seems to be the pattern: if the change is technical in nature, then your reject/approve decision is based on the reject/approve decision of the previous reviewer. If the change is non technical, then you mostly reject. (see here: stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/16802997 - you rejected a perfectly good answer just because it was rejected by someone else) . – itoctopus 2 hours ago
is the comment I saw (see, until I refresh apparenlty)

user315433
If the candidates were invited to post questions that were locked against comments...

@enderland was that not the comment in question? Or was it simply removed as well?

4:53 PM
@canon I'm not sure. that was the text I saw when I clicked on this chat message shortly after it was posted

@enderland same

@enderland The part Shog9 mentioned about Wikipedia had already been removed

that's why I'm confused @mmyers, it reads like the objection is to the comment I just posted above

user310756
@enderland yep

@enderland yeah, that was edited shortly after being posted to add the bit I referenced earlier, and then much later redacted by a mod to remove it again. And now deleted by its author.

user310756
4:54 PM
@canon @enderland the full comment is here

LOL
awesome
that was an actual LOL, btw. My cat gave me a weird look.

maybe ALOL needs to be a thing
but then how long before people ALOL when not actually LOLing

user310756
I love it when my cats give me a look of superiority

@YvetteColomb that's normally when I point them out to the 3 year old

user310756
@AJHenderson poor cat - poor 3 year old!

5:00 PM
@Shog9 so much work for a comment...

yeah, I'm bored already

@CanadianLuke no way, my girlfriend was just there for a big music festival. Said they were in no danger but definitely a lot of smoke carried on the wind
We're in Ontario
On an unrelated note today's Listening is faaaantastic for real

@cazc_941 BC. We're hosting around 50,000 evacuees right now in our city (normally 80,000 people). It's been a challenge in some parts, but faith in humanity is getting restored

@CanadianLuke yeah I figured, she was at Bass Coast in BC and said there was lots of hubbub about it. That's a big population bump, wow

Ugh, town hall. Good night :(

5:08 PM
Yea... And hearing that we made national headline news is kind of embarrassing... Especially after Ft McMurray last year

I love Town Hall because it means other people's skeletons get dragged out instead of mine for once
:P
@CanadianLuke accidents happen
Meanwhile I think it's rained more days than not this summer over here

We would LOVE to have more rain... At least some people have been allowed to go back to their homes, but they're still on alert... And taking the long way around (around 9 hours with no traffic, vs 3.5 hours with no traffic).

@Shog9 really? Apparently sagar has some work for you...

user310756
@canon SSssshhhh @SagarV and I are having ping issues - he needs no encouragement to ping people :D

@YvetteColomb if you're having ping issues with him, just reduce his TTL.

user310756
5:20 PM
@canon TTL?

Time to live (TTL) or hop limit is a mechanism that limits the lifespan or lifetime of data in a computer or network. TTL may be implemented as a counter or timestamp attached to or embedded in the data. Once the prescribed event count or timespan has elapsed, data is discarded. In computer networking, TTL prevents a data packet from circulating indefinitely. In computing applications, TTL is used to improve performance of caching or to improve privacy. == IP packets == Under the Internet Protocol, TTL is an 8-bit field. In the IPv4 header, TTL is the 9th octet of 20. In the IPv6 header, it is...

ping -t sagar@se

@YvetteColomb it was a nerdy joke about killing him off.

user310756
@canon ah LOLOL funny

3 messages moved to Chimney

we're now talking in two rooms! Canon

we're talking in all the rooms
welcome to transcendence

5:37 PM
Yay, mentor meeting moved by 10m, so I'll be in a bit of Town Hall.

user310756
I'm going to have to go to bed

Stack Overflow Academy, now as a chat room.

5:56 PM
It always takes folks a few years to catch up to me

Ok, I'm done with the tag... Now I wait 6 to 8 weeks for the gold badge ...

RIP, mentor meeting moved back, have fun without me.

So.... What do we talk about for the Town Hall?

Hey everyone! We’re just about ready to start up today’s Town Hall Chat. I’m going to put this room in timeout, go over the plan and the guidelines, and then give the floor to our hosts. Here we go!
This room was placed in timeout for 3 minutes; Town Hall Chat intro
Like last time, we’re keeping the format of this chat pretty informal, in the hope that we’ll be able to keep setup easy and low-pressure so we can keep having these chats more regularly.
We’ll start with a couple minutes of chat between our illustrious hosts (@Shog9, @bluefeet, @Pops, @JonEricson, @JNat) on today’s first topic (mentorship) and then open the floor to y’all to react and respond.
We’ve got another topic in mind (elections) to move to when that subject winds down. After that, we’ll open the conversation up to whatever you folks want. If we want to keep going on one of the earlier topics, that’s cool; if there are other subjects you’d like to hear from us about, that’s cool too. Second half of the chat will be the time to bring those up.
As with last time, please keep the meta-chat to a minimum; we'll welcome feedback on the format and such on MSE after the show. We're going to do our level best to maintain a reasonable signal-to-noise ratio here, so if you're going to type words and hit enter, please keep them on topic.
So what are we going to talk about? First up: mentorship! Take it away, @JonEricson.

A few years ago, I proposed a mentoring system. That didn’t ever get off the ground because we didn’t really know how many people might want to be involved. In addition, my proposal was a bit too complicated to implement without a lot of user research. We risked spending a lot of time building something nobody will use.
Thankfully we now have a full time UX researcher, Kristina Lustig. She has proposed a project to do mentoring in chat. This obviously won’t scale if successful, but we do think we can learn a thing or two from a focused chat room. In addition, it won’t take much in the way of developer resources to pull off.
This has been on my mind for ages and I’m really excited to see forward movement on mentoring. I think chat has some limitation, so I bet we’ll need to spend some more time building out a longterm solution. (Or, we might find nobody is actually interested in mentoring. We’ll see.)

I, for one, welcome our new TAs in what might be termed an ad-hoc educational institution of Stack Overflow.

@JonEricson that's the big benefit of Kristina's research solution IMO - we get to find out if anyone actually wants this, and if it actually helps anyone, before we sink a bunch of effort into building out a real system for it

We've never made that mistake before. :-/

6:33 PM
of course not

NEVER!

soo ... you actually want to talk about the App??

What app?

so i guess the question for this group, as the timeout winds down, is: what do you think? do you want to be a mentor? do you think this will help?

I saw the post in MSO but we have to give better guidelines to mentors

6:34 PM
yeah - lot of ink will be spilled on putting this together, i think

@SagarV I actually think that's a big advantage of doing this in chat initially
more kibitzing

@SagarV I agree. But we also need to let people fail a bit first.

enderland has already written a lot of his thoughts on the subject coincidentally I published an internal blog just today on the importance of mentorship, though

@enderland "internal" :-(

"So what you want to do is, write a real click-baity title: '10 things you didn't know about my Null Pointer Exception'"

6:35 PM
so as I'm skimming through Kristina's post ... does this change anything for smaller sites where mentorship can (and does) happen in the site's main room?

I also made another suggestion there saying (The First question posted by people should be hidden(only visible to mods) until they came out from FP review)

It might help a small group but for the majority of new users I still think they expect a forum/facebook/twitter like site with no rules
5

@Shog9 #5 will <SEGMENTATION FAULT>

@Vogel612'sShadow Mentoring already happens in chat on smaller sites to some degree. Er. Not really.

@Vogel612'sShadow as I've read it, it's Stack Overflow only for now.

6:36 PM
@Vogel612'sShadow AFAIK it's a pilot program/test on SO only, so during this research phase, nothing will change for those

@Vogel612'sShadow initially, no. Small sites can do it ad-hoc in a chat room (or meta sandbox...), but that's completely unworkable for SO - even a dedicated chatroom will likely be overwhelmed quickly, so all this really tests is whether it's even effective.

the chat room she proposed may be a nightmare. if people have access to chat, they may convert it into a whatsapp (24 mods can't handle he flood)

We can also shut it down anytime.

just make it so there are like 10 chat rooms and people randomly get assigned to one

If it works (long shot...) and works well (even longer shot...) and we end up building functionality to support it specifically...

6:37 PM
Is it possible to limit mentors to a handful of users, instead of 50+?

If new users don't want to read the rules, are they necessarily going to want to be mentored?

...then this would be a huge boon to sites that have unexpected rules for posting.

@SagarV which is partly why this is an initial test

@enderland That's a thought. I was thinking the same sort of thing too.

could also just control access - designate 100 mentees, give them access to the chat rooms they need, see what happens
lot to learn here

6:37 PM
@SagarV I hear whatsapp is really popular

are mentors automatically room owners (maybe buffed) to be able to clean up help vamps?

@Shog9 you should get it

and give up ICQ?!!

@enderland your answer on MSO made me have a thought a few minutes before this chat started, about MVCEs. There might be something off in the work/reward ratio there. A lot of the time people who put minimal effort in might still get an okay result (from their perspective) while people who put a lot of effort in might only get a marginally better result.
2

@Vogel612'sShadow a lot of this is influx. We've not made all the decisions yet

6:38 PM
are there any plans to target this feature later? So that the mentor chat won't be available for all new users, but maybe is one of the results of triage? I'm not sure this kind of one-on-one realtime chat stuff can scale to the kind of volume SO has
7

@Shog9 but I really hate (since my phone is damaged)

@Pops if someone creates a mostly MCVE the odds of making a good question are about 100x more than a "hi guys pleease help me with this code dumpb"

@SagarV "Whatsapp broke my phone - a cautionary tale for future SO mentorship development"

@MadScientist No plans yet. But those do seem like good ideas.

Of course MVCEs are better for everyone else, but there's not a ton of incentive for the asker if they're going to get a passable solution anyways.

6:39 PM
@MadScientist That's a good thought, maybe write it up as an answer on the MSO post

@Pops why attack at the question angle then?

Implement the testing on SO may be difficult. In my personal opinion, it'll be good if it is first implemented in some low traffic sites/ public beta sites

Did you consider trying this on a smaller site? The dynamics can be very different from SO there.

@Pops this applies to a lot of aspects of asking. Someone did some analysis a while back (probably in that papers thread on meta) wherein they looked at title length - if memory serves, there's a sweet-spot around 120 characters where titles are juust specific enough to get folks to click, but not so specific they get ignored.

test it on SF, what could go wrong... ;-)

6:40 PM
@Vogel612'sShadow this idea is only, like, 15 minutes old.
4
My idea, not the Mentorship proposal.

@Shog9 not alone. there are others too. including Chrome Canary

@MadScientist Since it already happens for small sites, we don't have any immediate plans to implement them elsewhere.

soo ... how much effort would you expend on something like a "collaborative editing area"?
One of the problems I see with mentoring is that edits can only convey so much reasoning...

keep chatting on this topic if you like, but we'll introduce another into the fray if anyone wants to pick up the thread. @Shog9'll kick us off

This came up tangentially in chat earlier, but given the current volume of elections - including Stack Overflow in Spanish’s first election and Stack Overflow’s 9th - I think it’s worth reflecting on just how much of a deviation from the norm these events, and their associated discussions, are for Stack Exchange sites.

6:41 PM
That feeling when you've manually checked 40+ sites for YouTube support

Most strikingly, for a system that fundamentally works by weakening or wholly disconnecting normal social ties and conventions, elections rely on them - these candidates are volunteering to become the representatives of their communities to individual members of each site, whether that’s in enforcing policy or resolving interpersonal disputes.
As a consequence of this, voters are strongly motivated to choose someone whose personality represents, if not their own, perhaps what they aspire to; a moderator who represents the best of us all.

@enderland I suggest some low traffic site

This… Can lead to extensive discussion of candidate personalities, past interactions, etc. Things we would normally discourage, but for the few weeks that are election time, must not only tolerate but encourage.

Also, what's being tested?

@StevenVascellaro this

Q: Stack Overflow Mentorship Research Project

Kristina LustigI’m Kristina, the first (and so far, only) User Experience Researcher here at Stack Overflow. As you probably know, on SO we have a bit of a problem with our new user experience. People new to SO (or maybe even new to programming!) come to us to find an answer to a programming issue, and that mea...

As rough as this can be on candidates (and we try to minimize that by, for example, restricting nominations from recently-suspended users), it does serve a critical purpose: establishing expectations for folks who'll probably encounter a lot more of it in the time they serve as a moderator.
Or as Bart so eloquently described it...
Dec 6 '14 at 18:04, by Bart
How about we just lock users in a room and hurl insults and Nazi references at them. If they snap in any way, they are dismissed.
6

wow that's an old link...

No, this is an old link:
Aug 31 '10 at 16:18, by Shog9
@Diago There are no memes on MetaChat. Just chaos. And banishment.

That would turn 7 years in a month

OK, folks - we’re past the 15 minute mark, so now you can feel free to bring up any other topics you have in mind, or continue on mentorship, or pick up shog's election musings. or what you will!
[jeopardy theme plays]

6:45 PM
@Shog9 aight... all well and good but... what exactly is the problem with how elections work now?

@Shog9 VtC: unclear what you are asking?
5

Not really asking anything

that ^

oh. that's why it's "unclear what you are asking" :D

Yay for elections! ... Alright next topic

6:46 PM
just a classic ShogRambleâ„¢ to see if anyone else has opinions

This came up earlier (in this room, and in the SO election chatroom), and I realized that probably quite a few people don't really have this expectation

@Vogel612'sShadow It's a bit strange that we let things get more personal in election season. Maybe that's not a problem.

So... If you need a question... How can we better set expectations for candidates during elections?

Big wall of text? ;-)
3

How about straight up telling them?

6:47 PM
MENTORS FOR CANDIDATES!
3

It's not like people who don't read make good candidates?

Nobody reads

@Shog9 Way to be doubly on topic.

The election process is weird as it is but it is like democracy: I don't see an alternative

I think we know some people who can mentor potential mods

6:47 PM
@Shog9 Bill would get a nice job. :p

@AndrewMyers what about people who can moderate potential mentors?

@Glorfindel I guess that's the same set of people?

honestly as a moderator you eventually will deal with way worse... fun than what I've ever seen on election posts, so if that's something that really bothers you (shrug)

The bug affect the mentor post

6:49 PM
and posssibly a few unicorns

I mean, a rite of moderator passage is having a massive meta post about how you are a terrible human being and should feel bad

Or, if you really do it right, a dedicated meta tag.

@enderland Should I be glad I never got one of those, then?

There's still time...

As a mod, I mean. I got one once I was hired... :P

6:50 PM
OK, so will the global chat flags get fixed before the mentoring miasma sets in?
2

I think that SO should contact some suspended people, give them an account and have them hurl some abuse at the candidates, to see how they react

@MartinJames so, I'm curious: what's the concern there?

@enderland Oh - I've got one of those!

@Shog9 chat flags are a bit broken...

@JNat we've had SE employees thrown under the bus on our meta too, there's still time!

6:50 PM
I mean, there are tons of chat flags regularly today

Do candidates and new moderators, overall, understand what they're getting into? I remember asking on my site's meta, before my first election, what the job entailed, and I've noticed how infrequent that is. Maybe I was just slow.

people get thrown into the cold water without knowing wtf that blue notification stuff is
or having the slightest clue about chat moderation

5 flags today on chat.so alone

@Shog9 only 5?

@enderland rolls up sleeves

6:51 PM
that's a bad day in the Lounge for you

@Shog9 The current chat flags are somewhat of an annoyance, in that all rooms get notified;(

@SagarV how many would you expect?

@MartinJames I guess that's not the biggest problem.

@MartinJames well, if they do this on the SO chat server then that cuts out a lot of flag recipients, but yeah, that's gonna be an issue.

There were only 3 yesterday

6:52 PM
the problem is that people get "punished" from "invisible a**holes" who "don't know our rules"

more seriously, what other bigger projects can we expect to see from SE coming in the near future?
4

@Vogel612'sShadow or the theory of deescalation

Folks talk about 'em like they're such a huge problem, so I figured 5 would be seen as evidence of the end times

@Shog9 if the mentor chat room implemented, lol it may 50-100

@Vogel612'sShadow Not remotely, no, but it's one that could extend 'issues' outside the mentoring experiment.

6:52 PM
what about that chat server merge?

@SagarV you say this based on...?
@Vogel612'sShadow extremely unlikely

@SagarV why, are you going to be in there?
2

@MonicaCellio We link to the theory of moderation blog post quite a bit. Probably out of date, however.

@Vogel612'sShadow on chat.SO?

nah. on Chat.SE

6:53 PM
@enderland Channels is our Next Big Thing.

@Vogel612'sShadow Well, good thing we're testing this on SO then!

@JonEricson as I recall, that's more theoretical than practical. It describes the ideal moderator, but doesn't talk about what a day in the life of a mod looks like.
3

17 mins ago, by Sagar V
the chat room she proposed may be a nightmare. if people have access to chat, they may convert it into a whatsapp (24 mods can't handle he flood)

@JonEricson not as badly out of date as the 7 meta questions blog post

almost every time I follow a valid flag it's "those darn ... from anywhere but here", "AND WHICH ... FLAGGED THIS!??!?!"

6:54 PM
I'd think Super User would be a better test site than Stack Overflow

I have to agree that flags are crazy bad on chat.SE - we've had 3 of them today already.

so tempted to flag that message

new users may not have an idea about the purpose of the room

With only a few hundred moderators and scant thousands of 10K users, I don't know how anyone keeps up.

@MonicaCellio Yeah. It also depends on what site we're talking about. At the very least, SO isn't the same as the rest of the network.

6:55 PM
@Pops channels + mentorship could be nice, too
3

@MadScientist I was pleased to not see a banner linking to that on the latest beta. But then the leaderboard email I got had it.

5 minute warning!

@hairboat I didn't get it

@MonicaCellio We can probably get that fixed.
@SagarV You just did.

@SagarV you just did (that was it) :)

@JonEricson right, I was talking more broadly, and there'll always be some customization. I think SO does a decent job of communicating "hey, this is real work -- you'd better be ready for 100 flag/day for your share".

@enderland howso?

@SagarV Many will - it's obviously to get their question answered quickly;(

@Shog9 there's a, ah, divide between "accept all the questions" people and "downvote all the questions" people, you could make a "Peace and Love Channel" or something where people can ask questions and get them helped into shape for the scary world of SO, or something

@MartinJames what about spam users

@JonEricson that'd be great. There's a "7 real questions of beta" post on MSE somewhere that was a better link target when it was written; haven't seen it in a while. But not linking to the old one anywhere would be a great start.

@enderland ah... So, like what some sites do with a meta sandbox, but able to scale

@enderland so there's gonna be another "Summer of Love"?

Why would you beta test a new chat system on the single most populated site by a factor of 1296.64%?

I hear that didn't work out so well last time

@SagarV I didn't even bother mentioning the trolls/spammers on the meta. It's a given:(

@Shog9 "able to scale" <citation needed> but maybe?
@Vogel612'sShadow Channel of Love, obviously ;)

6:58 PM
@enderland Doesn't Meta kinda provide that already?

@NobodyNada how many people have ever asked a question on meta in advance of asking it? like.... 0.00001%?

@enderland well, as opposed to a sandbox on meta which gets crazy after a few dozen posts.

@NobodyNada But there's a notable meta effect. :-(

@NobodyNada not really. In theory it could, but most folks don't see it as quite appropriate (and you need 5 rep to even ask, so...)

@enderland oh, so like an "SO light" where new or timid users can do their initial work and get help, and then maybe with a migration path to SO when ready?

6:59 PM
@enderland but do you expect them to ask on a channel?

@MonicaCellio @enderland +1 i would LOVE to see this

@MonicaCellio right. and, since I've always heard that there is a large number of people who dislike how "negative" SO is...

wasn't there like ... 20 proposals for this on area 51 that got closed?

@enderland Why not a SE site dedicated to reforming bad questions?

@AndrewMyers /dev/null
