Wait a minute... Why does this room have and as tags?

That’s what we do here.
@Elephant Mornang

And someone... please post an answer to this question saying that you agree that the request should be implemented and why, so that my bounty doesn't get "awarded" to the trash.

@John I wouldn't consider it trash. Bounties are meant as a way of advertising a question as much as a way to reward a potential good answer
you've at least got that question promoted a while

It only got 2 more upvotes during the period
Do (removed) smoky reports still need to be moved to Chimney?
Welcome, @EdCottrel

1:49 AM
@John I think @JasonC has a script for that, assuming another RO dosen't catch it first

So they filled it with Yvette and then ... another mod (Ash) resigned. Is it time AGAIN to fill in a 3rd Moderator for this site?

user315433
2:22 AM
They don't exactly "run", there have been no election on Pets (a beta site)

user315433
They volunteer when they have time, and step down when they don't.

user315433
Still Ash's case is a bit unusual. First appointed 2013-10-25, resigned 2014-04-07, was appointed again 2015-12-03 and resigned again 2017-06-13.

Kay fine, why do they accept their nomination as a pro-tem mod if they will resign soon?

user315433
Some things in life are not expected several months (or years) in advance.

oh my its it's?
also in the past 3 days I've gotten 3 pieces of equipment to work simply by touching them
and one more needed some gentle coaxing.

@JourneymanGeek yup its correct
@JourneymanGeek whoa... really the The Equipment Whisperer.... :P

@ShadowWizard One of the directors here (really a manager) has started calling me magic hands ;p

@rene yanno the whole adage about programmers and hardware right?
If I fix hardware by touching it, I may break software by touching it

I'm at wits end ...

11:44 AM
@rene that sounds really nasty! :P
@rene is this a nice place?
Found it!
So you're now in Ireland? @rene

12:01 PM
@Derpy Wow. That's actually mildly... nauseating. Like in the same way that combining weird foods makes me feel weird.
Like... Gummy bears on a pizza or something.
Steak filled peeps
Peas and oreos
Trying to come up with gross combos is actually kind of fun
Snickers with cream cheese
I can't think of any that don't involve candy

@JasonC also.... this screenshot. It looks like they took a plastic Garfield action figure and left it in an oven for a while.

Do you use tabs or spaces for code indentation?

This is a bit of a “holy war” among software developers; one that’s been the subject of many debates and in-jokes. I use spaces, but I never thought it was particularly important. But today we’re releasing the raw data behind the Stack Overflow 2017 Developer Survey, and some analysis suggests this choice matters more than I expected.

There were 28,657 survey respondents who provided an answer to tabs versus spaces and who considered themselves a professional developer (as opposed to a student or former programmer). Within t …

And rightfully so

Whitespace is an esoteric programming language developed by Edwin Brady and Chris Morris at the University of Durham (also developers of the Kaya and Idris programming languages). It was released on 1 April 2003 (April Fool's Day). Its name is a reference to whitespace characters. Unlike most programming languages, which ignore or assign little meaning to most whitespace characters, the Whitespace interpreter ignores any non-whitespace characters. Only spaces, tabs and linefeeds have meaning. An interesting consequence of this property is that a Whitespace program can easily be contained within...

@Feeds And global warming is clearly caused by the decrease in the number of pirates.

@rene excuses excuses
@Derpy I thought because a butterfly sneezed in India?

Kevin Troy on June 15, 2017

Starting today, you can download the raw data from Stack Overflow’s 2017 Developer Survey, which received more than 64,000 responses from developers around the world. (The data file includes the 51,392 responses we considered to be sufficiently complete for publication.) You can download previous years’ results as well, from 2011 to 2016.

We’re always excited to share our insights about developers from the survey — such as the finding that developers who use spaces make more money than those who use tabs — and we’re eager (and curious) to see what you come up with in your own analysis. …

1:16 PM
Wait... can use wikipedia instead

@Derpy so when pirates will reach 0, world will be burned?
becoming a pirate to save the world

There are far more pirates than that

@Bart where?

It's not about pirate-bay users

Are they really pirates?
Do they have swords?

1:20 PM
Piracy off the coast of Somalia has been a threat to international shipping since the second phase of the Somali Civil War in the early 21st century. Since 2005, many international organizations have expressed concern over the rise in acts of piracy. Piracy impeded the delivery of shipments and increased shipping expenses, costing an estimated $6.6 to $6.9 billion a year in global trade in 2011 according to Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP). According to the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), a veritable industry of profiteers also arose around the piracy. Insurance companies significantly...

@Bart pffft that's no pirate
Just a man with a (big) gun

You go tell him that

going to tell him that

1:22 PM
Maybe the Paris Climate treaty is really about reducing the number of pirates and Trump knew it ...

@rene sounds just right... now go spread this in Facebook! :D
And twitter

Nah, the math is simple. You have a certain amount of ocean surface. And a number of pirates on that surface. If ocean levels rise, the surface increases, and so does the number of pirates. So global warming equals more pirates.

and Stack Overflow
Oh noes, we're not a social network.

@BhargavRao Ocean Overflow

@Bart you are mixing up cause and effect. Global warming rises because pirates decrease, not the opposite.

1:28 PM
@ShadowWizard Ask Pirates

And that is obviously because the pirates would attack and sink rich people ships, which by definition have heavy polluting engines

See, this is why you're the brains in this room, and I'm just here for comic relief.

@Derpy Haha gross.

user315433
@Feeds They work 4 times harder, so they deserve to be paid more.

@JasonC nah, this is gross:

Looks like Douglas Adams was really a genius!
Stay enough time in space, and you'll grow another head.

> declined - One post is not a pattern. Original was deleted. They may simply not have seen it.

which plagiarization case this time?

So I should wait until a user post 100 off topic questions before flagging? @Shog @bluefeet (BTW, thanks for handling the flag so quickly! :))

oh, I thought it's about plagiarization again

@Elephant nah, just off topic questions. Same user posted same off topic question twice in like 15 minutes, so I flagged the second asking to suspend.

@ShadowWizard I'd just keep closing, qbans are more fun

2:03 PM
@ShadowWizard 42 (Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything) is also acceptable! — alexolut 2 mins ago
lol @alex got good sense of fun ;)
@JourneymanGeek much harder to reach it on MSE... :/

ah maybe
but I'd rarely consider that reason to flag personally
but yeah, I guess MSE is different

@JourneymanGeek oh, it is

I just consider things like that eventually a self solving problem

Of course, but better prevent 6-8 off topic questions if possible, from a user who is obviously not going to post any on topic questions. @Oded is doing this sometimes, there's a generic "suspended for asking programming questions" reason on MSE.

2:08 PM
Though what I flagged wasn't programming. :/

I only do it if they are q-banned on SO or have asked more than one programming question on MSE.

@Oded oh... so two non-programming off topic questions on MSE aren't enough for suspension?

Not for asking programming questions, no :P

lol
So change the reason

Doesn't happen all that often.

2:13 PM
Or just.... ban dem all!:D

@ShadowWizard Whoa! That's not gross that's kinda cool

2:50 PM
As a new beta site, I'm impressed with Bioinformatics getting HNQ slots very often.

> Developers who responded “Both” were generally indistinguishable from ones who answered “Tabs”
So... the worse you are the better your pay-check?
(Trad: please use spaces. Or tabs. Not both.)
Also, I would love to point that in 2017 one would expect problems like "tabsVSspaces" to be silently managed by the IDE....

OSS, when different IDEs and developers have different notions of which is best :P

I just just use 2 spaces and a tab to keep everybody happy.

You monster!

3:44 PM
@Shog9 Hey, sorry to bug you, maybe you know, so I've been trying to write new scripts using event stuff and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. In this little test:
(function () {
    'use strict';

    window.addEventListener('test-event', function (ev) {
        console.log(`test-event ${JSON.stringify(ev)}`);
    });

    let script = document.createElement('script');
    script.type = 'text/javascript';
    script.textContent = `(${InjectedStuff.toString()})()`;
    document.body.appendChild(script);

    function InjectedStuff () {
        window.dispatchEvent(new CustomEvent('test-event', { detail: { item: 42 } }));
    }
}
In both Chrome and FF the event listener is dropping detail out of the event and ending up with just isTrusted: false as the only thing in ev. Am I doing something obviously dumb?
I only found two things on the internet about it, one had no follow up, and the other was a person who said "Dunno what I was doing wrong but it started working again".
I can't figure out what's different compared to the top bar script and also another script that I did the same thing you did for ff compatibility (and it worked).
Oh wait a minute
Nevermind it's just that detail doesn't show up in JSON.stringify for some reason.
JSON.stringify(ev.detail) works fine. More JavaScript stuff I don't understand I guess.
Wow I've been struggling with that for like two days. There's a lesson to be learned in here somewhere.

Yes, ditch JavaScript

Does anyone know why there are no builds on site today yet?

@alexolut what do you mean?
Ah, wait you mean rev 2017.6.14.26255

@rene I mean build number on the bottom of any SE site page. It's 26255 whole day.
I waiting for rebuilding to check new translation that I made in transifex.

Maybe not a single build so far was successful. Can happen if only Nick is working ;)
@alexolut Maybe @Oded or @AdamLear know if there are any builds stuck in the build pipeline ...

Usually there are several builds on this time of day.

Yeah, they release often

6:54 PM
it's been a slow day

there you have it
^ @AdamLear have some coffee

thanks :)

yw

@AdamLear could you please catalyze the day? I mean make a build :)

Just push a white-space fix ...

7:02 PM
So, in David's spaces vs tabs post, I just want to know.... who is using c# and spaces? Apparently that is a thing.

What is the VS2002 default? I think I still use that...

vs has always been tabs

7:42 PM
@alexolut A build is going out now... Give it 5 minutes or so

7:56 PM
@AdamLear something weird ... some strings were updated, some not. E.g. ban reason is old "чтобы позволить участнику успокоиться", but I changed it to "с целью дать участнику успокоиться" in Transifex. Does it fixed since a ban time?

hmm

8:10 PM
yep

8:24 PM
@alexolut do you have any other examples of strings that weren't updated?
oh wait, this isn't much of a mystery. those reasons are actually stored as strings in the DB. so future suspensions should get the new wording, but the ones that exist right now will remain as is.

@AdamLear I thought so. Need to ban someone :) But message for already banned users looks ugly now :(

Well, if they didn't want an ugly message, they shouldn't have gotten themselves suspended :)

8:44 PM
@AdamLear I think it doesn't matter to them ... but for me it's ugly.

it's not too bad. at least it's still grammatically correct... though possibly missing a comma before чтобы? my memory is hazy on that.

@AdamLear yep. Main reason to change a translation is to get rid of comma! See this post for details: ru.meta.stackoverflow.com/q/4572/176217
