@JNat hey, quick question. Does the "nuke all accounts" process you're using against the spammers include meta sites? If not, it might explain what's described here, right?

Feeling dirty after spending some time on MSO

Is it ok to make a question-specific room so you can invite the question author to chat?

@StevenVascellaro yes, it's quite common to do that.

Alright, thanks
I have a soft spot for question-banned users... mostly because I was question banned from Stack Overflow myself for a few months. :P

7:30 AM
@StevenVascellaro yeah, figured as much.... :)
Better onebox the question for a start.

Ironically, I only got unbanned after answering a question by claiming that answering questions couldn't get you unquestion banned
@ShadowWizard Onebox?

Q: Can I regain question asking privilege by editing posts

user3382203About a month ago, I was about to ask a question on stack overflow and saw this message: You have reached your question limit Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions from this account. See the Help Center to learn more. I read the following questions too: What can I do when gett...

Ah. Makes sense

when the message is only a link to something, it automatically "expands" the link, that's called "onebox"

The linked answer was actually the post that got me unquestion banned
After reading it, some user went and upvoted 3 of my posts on Stack Overflow
And that was enough to end the ban
To this day, that is still my single favorite answer I've ever given on the site

A: Does earning large amounts of reputation directly affect a question ban?

Steven VascellaroTL;DR: Personal experience says no, gaining reputation does not directly affect a question ban. You missed @Shog's request! ^
(or.... ignored?! ;))

Where would I even add them? XD

@StevenVascellaro that's.... a good question! Your answer is already complete. Very rare case of not needing FHRC. :D

Only thing I've added to the Meta SE answer is a note on question bans allowing a second chance after 6 months

@StevenVascellaro time is not relevant. Ban can be lifted after 6 minutes too, or 6 years, or never...

@ShadowWizard There's a specific quote in the help center
Does the ban last forever?

If you're unable to improve your existing questions, you'll get the chance to ask a new one 6 months after your last question. If that question is positively received, you may be able to continue asking questions; if not, then the ban will be reinstated.

If you see a similar message when trying to post an answer, please see our guidance on what to do about answer bans.

7:43 AM
But actually I'm surprised it took so many answer upvotes to lift your ban

@ShadowWizard The answer upvotes didn't lift my ban
It was 3 single question upvotes

@StevenVascellaro oh. Even worse...
Well, didn't know the q-ban was so harsh.

Yeah. Honestly, that's why I posted my answer originally. I was so surprised at the negligible effect answering questions had
To this day, I think it was only the 3 question upvotes that got me unbanned, because it gave me a positive question score
@ShadowWizard At the time, I wanted to see if I could become a top yearly contributor while question banned. XD

@StevenVascellaro hehe, maybe we can convince Jon Skeet to perform a test: let him post 10 bad questions, see if he'll be question banned. ;)

@ShadowWizard For reference, this was my question history when I got banned
It's just a hyperlink in my answer. Debated embedding it, but thought the post looked a bit too cluttered

7:52 AM
Nah, it's fine.

8:41 AM
@Steve well, looks like that user isn't interested in further discussion. :(

Oh well. I saw one or two of their posts that could be improved with edits.
Might eventually do it myself

@TGMCians well, he needs to cool down, clearly.

@TGMCians nothing comes to mind.

Ah I see

Or you can ask him when he gets back

Or ask on Meta, so we can have some drama where everyone pitches in, but the answer is "we can't tell you".

user202362
I must confess, while others see users, sometimes I see preys. Maybe I was born an e-predator ... those preys are usually with a lot of reps, frequently on and ... sometimes I just want to launch an ambush :'( ... luckily, usually I only see 1 prey on each chat ...

muffins for limbs? How quaint...

No. Muffin for name.

12:28 PM
(I've never watched MLP)

12:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek Long story short: the word "Derpy" original meaning is "silly, foolish". It is also used to refer to strabismus (=>derpy's eye). The character Derpy was never intended to be a special character - originally it was just an animation error that gave "derpy's eye" to a background pony in the first episode of the show. But then the watchers turned it into a sort of "Find the derpy pony/where is Waldo" thing, and the character was turned into an intentional easter egg.

The fans started to call the pony "Derpy" because of the eyes. Problem arose when the staff decided to "endorse" the fan given name.

derp

Sadly, the word Derpy is also used as a slang offense to indicate a person that has mental problem. Since the character has also that weird look... the naming backfired with people claiming it was offensive and such.
As a result: the show never used the name "Derpy" again.
Even the toys were unlabeled for a long time. Recently, they started to refer to the pony with a new name: Muffin.
This was probably a reference to the fanmade idea that the character likes to eat muffins (why this idea came up is a mistery - probably it is due to the fact that in one of the first episode Derpy is the only pony that seems unaffected by some bad muffins that were the result of a very sleepy backer and many errors with the ingredients)

This week we’re at OSCON in Austin as part of our efforts to support the open source community. While we’re here, we thought we’d compare what’s trending on social media versus what we can see through our new Stack Overflow Trends tool. We launched Trends this week so developers could see how technologies have grown or shrunk over time.

The top terms on social yesterday included a combination of companies and tech, with Kubernetes and TensorFlow leading the pack for the latter group. Here’s a short list of some of the top terms: …

How do I schedule an event room?

Ok, I disagree with that but I leave that then to @Bart and @ShadowWizard to judge

@Zaid if you're a room owner or moderator, you can do it by modifying the stuff in the schedule tab in room info.

@Zaid careful, @M.A.R. grows when getting compliments, he's a special chemical. And @rene too, being a flower. :D
@πάνταῥεῖ +3/-2 guess not what you expected! ;)

@ShadowWizard Interesting, yes. But votes are weird anyways, and votes at MSO are double weird.

@πάνταῥεῖ more weird than MSE?! Nah, been to MSO today, nothing weird.... just tons of downs, few ups.

So we found our MSO anonymous down voter?

@ShadowWizard Ooops MSE was what I meant.

I'm really interested how much rep I gained at my SO account during my stay in the penalty box. Doing a rough calculation it shoud be a several 100reds.

@TravisJ hmm, OK. You're off my list then. But don't let it happen again.

@πάνταῥεῖ why rough? Just sum all the rep in reputation tab of profile for the days you were in that box
Can use script for this too

user315433

@πάνταῥεῖ Can see it approximately by hovering over mini-rep graph on your Activity tab. stackoverflow.com/users/1413395/…

@Gerry As an architect 65k is certainly too less. It would indicate you're a freshman and not really a Software Architect. Upwards from 70k (better 80k), we could talk about it.

Oh, you're still suspended.... when did it start? @πάνταῥεῖ

@ShadowWizard I'll simply wait those remaining 2 days, before writing a script.

@rene - Well I am either happy to have been on a list or horrified, depending on the lists intent. Lists have historically been problematic at times. So which was it? Actually, don't tell me. I don't want to know.

@ShadowWizard Ah, I see. There shouldn't be a difference for m or f, but there still is sadly.

Respect for MSE, we beat Quora!

^And Reddit as well IMO.

:D

We're the FAQ people vs the WTF people :-D

Not too difficult. Quora seems to be a source of biased information from users advertising their own products or services. Reddit is like dialing a random phone number and crossing your fingers. Could be good, but often it is a dead end.

@πάνταῥεῖ oh , that is tempting but I have to be kind of sober tomorrow at work, so it has to wait ....

kind of sober? so you're saying there is a chance

@TravisJ hehe, well said!

@rene Since I've been applying my new job, I was staying for all kinds of liquor. (in favor of beer) ...

And what about EE? @Travis

Ooh, do me next! lol
I actually don't know much about EE because of the paywall and it was slightly before my time.

Oh, that was all badly worded. s/staying/staying away

I think the one time I did look at EE for an answer it was for something very obscure in Entity Framework, and the information was interesting but didn't really get me to where I wanted to be. To be fair, it ended up being a problem with a connection library and the answer was it had to be fixed in house.

7:52 PM
Seems I'm to drunk to type properly again.

@TravisJ heh, all I remember from my one time using it is bypassing that pay wall with some Google trick
(not cache, something more elegant)
(reminds me of the way anyone can join SE private beta with the direct link in Area 51)

(perhaps it was by using an archive site?)

(nah, it was something like reaching the page directly from Google, then it showed all answers)
(but don't think it was SO easy)

(that is how I bypass logging in to Quora)

If anyone's interested I'd like to share a little funny anecdote about my new job's indian management strategies.

@πάνταῥεῖ shoot!

Here we go:
"Our indian overlord bosses solve all our infrastructure problems for us :-P
The colleagues in Hamburg are working from home office for the recent 3 weeks now, since there are problems with their connectivity infrastructure at their new office location.
As a "workaround" for the not yet installed glass fibre, they decided to sent up a number of LTE routers there.
After setting these up it turned out that each of them works at a bandwidth rate of ~260 kBps (YES kBps! That equals 2.6MBps!). As I was testing with a colleague today even simple audio (Skype) gets clunky. Not to menti

I'm always interested in small details, which most people don't care about. Ask @Jason. ;)
@πάνταῥεῖ LOL! How you reach those weird places...... :D

Speaking of small details, isn't 260kBps 0.26MBps?

@Journeyman also started new job, and also don't really like it so far....

7:59 PM
@ShadowWizard Job offers!

@πάνταῥεῖ what exactly you work at?
i.e. what you do at work?
@TravisJ think I had faster modem in my first internet connection, some 20 years ago.... ;)

@TravisJ My team lead proposed to introduce a new measure of µBps. Won't help much but the numbers are impressive. He did along with that link:

@ShadowWizard - Wow, I think 20 years ago (20 years ago? jeez) I was still only able to get 56k dialup.
That scene is hilarious

@TravisJ oh... maybe me too, don't remember to be honest!

I think I had a whopping 333mhz processor to go with it too lol

8:04 PM
@ShadowWizard BI currently. I don't care so much what's the actual problem domain. If it's not very highly specialized like image processing or such stuff, I rarely had problems to get into solving the domain specific problems. I'm using the languages and technologies that seem to be most appropriate.

@TravisJ AT or XT?

I've shared that with friends at FB, and one of them came up with that nice RFC proposal:

@ShadowWizard Heh, those were only like 5 mhz

@πάνταῥεῖ BI like Qlik?
Qlik is a software company based in Radnor, Pennsylvania, United States. Qlik is the provider of QlikView and Qlik Sense, business intelligence & visualization software. == History == Qlik (previously known as QlikTech) was founded in Lund, Sweden in 1993 as a software company in business intelligence (BI). Its PC-based desktop tool was called QuikView. "Quik" stood for "Quality, Understanding, Interaction, Knowledge." Initially the software was sold only in Sweden. Måns Hultman became CEO in 2000 and Lars Björk became CFO. The company focused on the area of Business Intelligence (BI), growing...
@TravisJ oh, lol... again, memory doesn't reach that far for me... :D

hah :D

8:09 PM
@ShadowWizard Yup!

@πάνταῥεῖ tell him snails are even faster: boingboing.net/2006/02/08/data-transfer-via-sn.html

There are even more funny details.

Hey everyone, new bot in Den, @Moosebot, come and abuse him please! :D
@Moosebot go to sleep

It turned out that it's not the german Telekom to blame why the glassfibre infrastructure didn't get installed.
It was one of our indian managers, who started to argue with Telekom about an extra charge of ~80EUR they demanded to install and setup everything there. He burnt about 200EUR phone cost in arguing with them, and the outcome was that the Telekom cancelled the whole order. It's sad and silly, as mentioned.
I feel parked well now, but looking for another job still right now.

@πάνταῥεῖ sad indeed, lose-lose situation.
Everyone lose due to silly ego fights.
That's why women are better managers in those cases. No, or at least less, ego.

8:22 PM
Absolutely aggree. Women managed to make my life going better all the time, be it social or professional concerns. There were my sisters (and still are), and my ex-wife (still referring to her when I'm in troubles), I'm pretty weak without the help of women.
I'm not really a feminist though ;-)

I wish we could use our SO account to comment on the SO blog.

@TravisJ yeah, it sucks, we must create actual Disqus account
@πάνταῥεῖ I am still amazed how you 100% forgave her after she betrayed you and got pregnant.
I mean... very few men can do that, I'm for example not among them.
So no ETA when you'll be in the new office? @πάνταῥεῖ

@ShadowWizard Well, I'm not sure I did at a 100%, but iwas at least minimum 50% my failure as well :-/

@πάνταῥεῖ well.... no time right now, but I'd like to develop that into discussion soon. Stay tuned.
(maybe we'll get a room to not bother all the innocent souls here.... ;))

@ShadowWizard I'm not at Hamburg, but I fear we'll face similar infrastructure problems when we have to change our office to Kolbermoor.

8:34 PM
Can't you co-locate your servers?

@ShadowWizard Feel free to contact me at FB or my private eMail g-makulik <at> t-onlne.de. It's usually a pleasure to discuss with you. Still blocked for private chatrooms here until saturday.
@TravisJ Our servers may just ache there.
TBH I betrayed her before, not by means of having sex with other women, but by neglecting things that a marriage involves, and she got the right to expect from me.
It was quite a mess to divorce and a kind of "War of Roses". The child ever was innocent at least, and I ever wanted to have a daughter. So I arranged with that situation somehow.

Ah yes, that's likely to be why.
