Q: Your answer is in another castle: when is an answer not an answer?

Shog9I think we can all agree, this sucks: If you've been around a little while, you've probably encountered hundreds of answers like this in various forums, some of them even marked as "The Answer" by well-meaning1 forum admins looking to close a thread. We could try to enumerate the commonly-obse...

@StevenVascellaro mergers are a pain in the rear not done right
If you think two questions are similar, close as duplicate is usually the best option.

@JourneymanGeek The better/more popular question is the one without an accepted/upvoted answer

closures will still keep the old question around
cross posting answers on questions that are identical is frowned upon

@Fawad I have a question about that on ELL

Q: What's with "star as interesting" and "unstar as interesting"?

M.A.R. These are normal common messages most of us who've chatted in SE chat interfaces have seen. I find the way the negation prefix un- "acts" intriguing. Why would I star and unstar a chat message as interesting? Does "unstar as interesting" mean that I unstarred the message because it was inter...

Unfortunately with disappointing answers

@M.A.R. so stackexchange is going to fix it?

@Fawad Nope, because it's not strictly ungrammatical
@M.A.R. CC @Shog

@M.A.R. that happens when you star a message by ,being room owner, pin and unpin. When un-pinned,that message gets starred. So stackexchange messed up some where there.. (I think)

@Fawad Oh, regarding that, there's already a post on meta.SE
But since it's not really end of the world, don't expect it fixed this soon

7:19 AM
Lol.

@JourneymanGeek that's a good suggestion ...

@M.A.R. I'd need a lot more context to decide - I mean, if someone had said that on MSU

In theory, your profile is whatever you want it to be
In practice ... eh eh eh...

It's just expressing amazement for markdown working in profile

@M.A.R. why did you tag that with . It almost feels like you rephrased your title in the tags and that is not where tags are for, no?

I can't...

Which is weird, and means they haven't seen Will's profile

Well, SO devs are letting spam on about me, they didn't remove it/delete the account

@Elephant devs don't typically moderate directly?

@rene You preferred if I tagged it ?

7:27 AM
"as" is an important preposition to tackle with
And my phrases contain grammar that has to do with "as"

@M.A.R. can't it do without it? Either as, ass or arse.

ELL's tags are pretty stupid and irritating, @Flower, but there are much worse tags than this one

OK, fair enough
Not going to battle ELL
It is their stupid language anyway ....

other than the bits they stole...
which is most of it

The weird thing about it is half the mod team agrees with me that the [grammar] tag is bad, and the other half disagrees

One of them was on the fence

you should have posted this in the beginning.... impossible to guess you mean an answer when posting link to the question.

Yeah, my bad
(I was distracted by minor drama elsewhere)

but yes, this is a spammer indeed.
@JNat looks like another cross site spammer has just been born, even though he self-deleted the single spam post on MSE we saw, I'm pretty sure more will follow. Your decision what to do about them...

I suppose that works. Ironically I'm not sure what's proper SE etiquette there
since its pretty unlikely I'd notice it elsewhere (no 10K except MSE and SU)

@JourneymanGeek well, when spammer self deletes the spam it's really bad, as they can undelete it at any point and it won't bump anything.

oh, delete/undelete bumps now

10:27 AM
oh
Still, it might take more time to notice.

(I know this cause I was trying to abuse this for flag cleanups)

Anyway, when the spammer got accounts on several sites, I usually call @JNat here to nuke them all. :)

Otherwise, just flags should be enough.

Well, we have ways too
but we've been hinting we need something better and cross site for a bit

10:31 AM
I have an idea for a feature request. When a user is Destroyed (usually spammer) on one site and got accounts on other sites, create automatic custom flag on those sites, alerting the moderators about the user and asking them to check.
@JourneymanGeek drama? Please, expand! bringing popcorn :D

Q: Chatty comment flags are chatty

Won'tSince chatty comment threads already get directed to chat why bother keeping the "too chatty" comment flag? I don't ever recall its use being beneficial. I also don't like the fact that you can't actually determine if a comment is too chatty without visiting the post in question. The flag qu...

Q: When should the "Too chatty" flag for comments be used?

LittleBobbyTablesSo, in the spirit of George's question, I decided to try my hand at flagging comments again, and flagged a comment as "too chatty". The question I found was non-constructive in my opinion, but someone answered anyways. There are now five comments below the answer, with the last comment being th...

No answer there. ^

@ShadowWizard 1. those are mods that are tired of not understanding the UI, which is most probably not mods of a quiet beta 2. That's a misrepresentation of their view. In their view, either comments should be deleted or they should be not. Considering harsher reasons don't bear extra weight on deletion, it's either delete or don't delete

@M.A.R. I don't think so. What I get from Won't post is "Don't bother us with comment flags, we have more important things to do".
So they just decline all comment flags to teach that lesson.
dunno how many such mods exist, but pretty sure more than just this one.

Nah, still going with Occam's razor. It's either a misclick, or weird site moderation culture

2:34 PM
Again, you consider something that is different from your opinion as "weird", and that is a mistake.

@ShadowWizard It's not just my view. I don't hold a grudge against that comment, or that poster, but it goes against the no-noise philosophy of SE

@M.A.R. a single "Thank you" comment is not noise in my opinion. At least not noise worth bothering to remove. When it becomes whole discussion it's noise worth flagging and removing, or when it's part of a post.

@ShadowWizard You're conflating "noise" with "bothersome". A comment that contributes nothing to the discussion is always noise
Considering moderating it is hurting no one, I don't see why there should be a problem
I mean, I'd reconsider if there were additional penalties for the poster of the comment
But there isn't, even for the "rude/offensive" comments
And the argument that a thank you feels better than an accept or upvote is moot, because the poster of that answer has long seen and forgotten about the comment, and seeing it again won't serve any purpose

@M.A.R. well, I don't object flagging it. I just say some moderators don't like it because they consider it waste of their time. And there's no official SE policy saying otherwise as far as I know. So personally, I'll not flag such comments myself.
If you flag again, a different moderator might handle this, with different view, and delete the comment.
Or the same moderator, who will get pissed off and decline again.
We can't really know...
And I still don't think it's a "site culture", just different personal views of different moderators.

@ShadowWizard Well, that's the SO perspective of things.

2:48 PM
You can try catch a moderator or two in chat and see.

Quieter betas with no major events underway usually have a core group of reviewers, and only one mod handling flags

@M.A.R. Well, this one looks like your best bet. If your second flag will also be declined, probably better try and invite him to chat, see what's going on.

And I'm telling ya; mods thinking non-prioritized flags are a waste of their time are way more likely to be on SO than Quant

There is also the chance that those moderators simply don't know that such comments are considered as noise.

lol
If its one or two, its fine
I once had someone throw me flags 50 at a time

Oh there it is, sweet thanks

4:43 PM
So, question: I'm going to start tracking HNQ data. I'll be logging all the params from the core formula (question score, answer count, total answer score, creation date to compute age). I'm also adding some things I think are interesting (individual answer scores, up/down vote distribution for questions and answers, view count). With the idea that we may want data to simulate alternate algorithms, what other interesting things do you guys think should I track?

@JasonC number of close votes, if possible time between the post was close voted and it was closed, number of comments, number of protections, number of answers downvoted to -2>=

Anything goes, as long as it can track questions that get into HNQ on and off and on and off and...
Also, maybe it can answer my other curiosity: how often the hotness/HNQ is refreshed?

@M.A.R. Sounds good, I can do all that. The number of answers downvoted to some threshold we can cover just by logging per-answer scores.
Per-answer comment counts, too.

4:59 PM
@JasonC I guess it doesn't make sense to count the comments under the question and the answers separately
An accumulated number works

@rene it's not new, but it shouldn't be a blocker
yeah, friendly name is a red herring. we really need to fix Suggested Edit queue stuff, though. Clear error messages would be a start. Possibly raising the queue size limit as well. I'll ping folks internally.

@M.A.R. Just a hint for a good reading about all that kinda stuff (contradictory I know):
Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah is a novel by writer and pilot Richard Bach. First published in 1977, the story questions the reader's view of reality, proposing that what we call reality is merely an illusion we create for learning and enjoyment. Illusions was the author's followup to 1970's Jonathan Livingston Seagull. == Plot == With some similarity to Nevil Shute's 1951 novel, Round the Bend, Illusions revolves around two barnstorming pilots who meet in a field in the Midwestern United States. The two main characters enter into a teacher-student relationship that explains the...

@M.A.R. Well, too chatty flags should be rather used for real noise and bandwidth savings, shouldn't they?

@πάνταῥεῖ That is indeed real noise, and it contributes nothing to the discussion

Small noise != Big noise

@AdamLear Ah, I didn't thought about that option of a full queue. Goes to tell how often I create new tag wiki's, I only saw that new field today. Thanks for the answer on meta.

Nice, two unrelated downvotes
I wonder who started to like me on meta.SE
@πάνταῥεῖ So? Noise is noise, and removable.

@M.A.R. glad you noticed. My effort doesn't go to waste then ...

Wonder why they downvoted my answer though? It's easier to just downvote questions. No further loss.
Probably just not a pro.

I have lots of rep to spare on answers

@M.A.R. On the other hand consider the backlog burden left to moderators and if that's really worth it.

@πάνταῥεῖ There's no "backlog" on a site as quiet as Quant.
There are hardly any reviews there

6:27 PM
But well, if they decline, they could also easily simply delete such crap.

That's the point!
That the decline is pointless. Even more pointless than the comment.

user315433
22 sites with 100 flags/day quota = 2200 comment flags, still doable with daily API quota. (I stick to the rule of requesting flag_options before casting a flag, which takes two API calls per flag.)

@M.A.R. Yeah, finally I got it. But I'd still bother to take the efforts flagging such stuff at all ;-)

If one does not mind learning them in totally random order, that is.

@Gerry Patterns are overrated. I've seen ideologists going completely mad and wrong with that stuff. If you know patterns, you should be well aware about all the anti-patterns in 1st place.
1st rule in software development: Swtch on your brain after the 1st cup of coffee in the morning!

@πάνταῥεῖ Not good advice if you have to commute before your 1st coffee. I ended up in all kind of interesting places but never at work with their coffee machine ...

To explain my views better, let's take a small step aside into gastronomy:
It's essential you know all the basic recipes and how you manage to get that stuff successfully and tasteful. That's just the plain craftwork.
To make a real business with that, it takes way more. You have to be creative and vary thos receipes. Even better you develop completely different ones along the lines of your business concept and what you have to offer to all of your customers beyond the very common fish soup.
@rene You could have had your own coffee machine at home in 1st place? Also I was always feeding my plants with coffee grounds, would you demand more nutrition actually?
