wondering....
ADSL based internet services no longer require authentication like old 56k connections did right?
so, this means that the ISP is identifying me by my "telephone line ID"
Is this assumption correct?
11:12
I have an userid and pwd on my ASDL line.
probably they still don't use it to identify you. DSL providers should be able to recognize (and bill) you based on your phone number.
3
A: How does my ISP track me?

CBHacking(A)DSL goes over phone lines, with real phone numbers (even if they aren't hooked up for calls). Changing your credentials won't change your house's phone number, any more than unplugging one landline phone and plugging in another would change the number. Additionally, your router has several un...

anyway, what I am really wondering is something more elaborate.
My friend who has VDSL says he doesn't need to log in anywhere
Suppose that your DSL provider gives you an email box too. That will probably have an user name / password
@Telkitty The more I imagine that series of waves irl, the more I giggle.
By assumption, your provider can identify you by your telephone number. So... has anyone ever considered using that info as a two factor auth?
Basically - since I am "directly connected" to the ISP, could the ISP theoretically secure the access to my mail box by checking that the request originates from my telephone number?
11:22
I suppose they could

I think it would be fun to have a "best site theme" contest.
12:16
I guess the follow-up question is: how often do the readers read the comments when they have been moved to the chat room?
Because personally, I almost never read them when they have been moved to chat room...
@AndrewT. If you aren't interested enough to see what was moved to chat then it doesn't seem like the comments were important enough to leave.
Plus remember that really important comments can be reposted, or will most certainly come up again.
user202362
I have a better idea: comments from questions can be moved to the room with the same tag
user202362
instead of having many private rooms, many comments of the same topic can share the same room
That's the fundamental flaw in most of the anti-move-to-chat arguments: If somebody posts an answer that has a major error, and somebody points it out in a comment, people seem to feel that whoever pointed it out is the only person in existence who possibly could have noticed, and that that was the one chance to point it out, and that the info is lost forever if the comment is removed.
In reality, it'll just come up again.
@Telkitty Heh. Can you imagine the chat room?
We'd need a separate
user202362
live the husky alone
12:25
Lol
What I think would be kinda cool is if comments were removed entirely, and instead every question just had a 'chat' button linking to its private room.
@JasonC Chem wins. Shhhh
With the "users chatting" icons and such.
That would lead to a feature request to add inline chat under posts
@M.A.R. Chem is pretty good. I'm a big fan of sharepoint, too. And RPG fits the site beautifully.
@JasonC Well, I guess there's a purge option already
But they exactly move it to chat to delete the comments while not deleting them at the same time
12:29
@Stijn You could have a compromise where only the most starred were shown under posts, no interactivity. Or more interestingly: Let the OP of the post choose which comments to highlight.
OP of post or OP of question that an answer was posted on.
(Noting that I'm a big fan of anything that increases and encourages use of chat rooms.)
12:44
@JasonC I don't know why but it seems that it conflicts with SE's ideal: not to duplicate comment, upvote instead. Well, one can argue that since the comment has been moved to chat, it's not a duplicate since it doesn't exist on comment section...
@Telkitty Given that I travel by train, there's not much point to that
though I'm okay if someone repost the important comment. But I personally would cease any comment interaction when I see "comments have been moved to chat room"
@AndrewT. Well, SE's real ideal is: high signal, low noise. So if you look at it that way, moving comments then reposting the important one sticks to that. Also, remember, the general feeling isn't just: upvote > comment, it's upvote / edit answer > comment.
In theory anyways
In practice people get all bent out of shape when suggested edits improve answers (not much problem when direct edits do, though -- what you don't see in a review queue can't hurt you I guess). It's kind of funny.
I'm finding this chat-instead-of-comment thing really interesting to think about, not so much a serious suggestion, just a thought experiment. I think if I have time today I might flesh it out into a discussion post. I doubt it will be well-received, I'll have to phrase carefully, but I'm really curious to see what other people have to say about it.

@Shog9 see above. Do you think we could do an experiment where downvote cost on answers is removed for a few weeks?
-3
Q: why do we lose rep when we downvote answers

SupernovaThe title just it, I really don't know if someone else has posted the same thing, but just keen to know, I mean if we feel an answer is no good, shouldn't we be given the freedom to down vote it at no cost?

See the comments under my answer
13:05
I know why we have it, but I'm interested to see how many "oh noes my precious rep" users would downvote more often if there's no cost at all.
13:17
@Stijn I think most users don't get that when an answer is deleted the rep flows back. And when that doesn't happen, it is worth revisiting to see if after an edit you need to change your vote. If you're constantly down voting answers that get accepted and top-voted, you might have to verify if you or the rest of the world is in error.
@Stijn I guess no way to tell whether removing the rep penalty is worth it or not, other than by an experiment
I've always been of the opinion that if you are truly upset about the loss of points from downvoting, then you're not the kind of person I really see any need to accommodate.
There's two types of new users there: Ones who get used to it and are fine with it, and ones that stay upset forever. The former is by definition a non-issue. The latter, who cares.

15:04
Ha
@JasonC amusingly, chat is not transient. Comments are.
Yeah that was a rather odd set of complaints.
and comments, quite literally are supposed to be post it notes remind you to wear pants. And hopefully pants.
That's part of what I think makes no-comments, chat-only an interesting thought experiment. Everything said would stick around forever but not add noise to the post. Especially if the OP were able to, say, highlight chat messages to make them appear under the post.
In a sense, its a mix of people thinking its like forum threading, and chat being an odd a third place in communities that weren't designed to be social at all where people are ;p
15:07
Yeah
I wonder how things would be different if comments never existed and all posts had their own separate chat rooms, from the very beginning.

So much eternally unforgivable stupidity.
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in answer, bad keyword with email in answer, email in answer: Is it possible to recharge an OV-chipkaart without a Dutch banking card? by dupuy on travel.SE
@JasonC What annoyed me most out of all that is that Joel pretty much dumped the stuff on Meta, left the employees to clean up the mess, and the podcast which supposedly discusses what's going on in the communities never mentioned a word about it.
Yeah...
And also, it was essentially an anxiety attack, which I can understand if I take a generous POV that ignores Joel's social responsibility given his position, but the refusal to acknowledge it as such was almost worse than the fact that it happened.
That's the part that sticks with me the most to this day.

@TimStone I have a question. Let's say I wanted to make a site with open, SEDE style access to the database. Is that (sandboxing and such) something that you guys manage with SQL Server directly? Or do you have some software that runs in the middle and filters queries and stuff? Beyond whatever software you've got to bridge to web requests. I mean parsing and processing the queries as an extra middle step.
@M.A.R. that is on answers? only < 0 can be delete voted by 20Kers. But, yeah, rules somewhere in the FAQ
Also it seems like, you dump everything to a separate db instead of giving access to the real thing, and that's a big layer of defense too?
@rene I think the 48 hours in on answers
STUPID RULES
19:21
@JasonC yes, also they are read-only for the SEDE Query connection
So weekly; dump sanitized data to publicly accessible sede database, give read-only access, build some basic bridging stuff on top (http requests -> query -> results -> response) and voila?
With appropriate resource limits and stuff per connection configured on sql server
the sql goes directly into a SqlCommand, only parameter parsing is special, nothing else
Sweet
