@JasonC It support hiring, at least here feels like it scrapes the bottom of the barrel

@JourneymanGeek Yeah. And for really it heavy companies too, that's what gets me. Like Caltrans it was shit. I guess they know how to do two very specific things: they can make traffic lights work, and they can make trains not crash into each other. Outside of those two hyperspecialized tasks everybody I interacted with over there on the infrastructure side just bumbled and broke things. It was so weird and inexplicable.
Caltrans being dot.ca.gov
Well to be fair it wasn't Caltrans precisely. They outsource all that to this company named Kapsch. So it was those guys.
And you'd think kapsch.net/us/ktc would be like, the cream of the crop as far as it goes.

1:08 AM
@JasonC out here, a lot of the support market is controlled by a few MNCs out of "US" and India.
Also, most companies don't get technology
so they outsource it to the lowest bidder, since they have no clue what they want
which invariably tends to be bodyshops, and I have many terrible things to say about them.

user202362
of course they outsource to the lowest bidder - so they can pay extremely high salaries for their executives and CEOs

naw, the bodyshops take a pretty big cut
I had a bad experience with most of the ones I talked to so...
I take a dim view towards them
@JasonC its entirely possible they outsource to someone else again

user202362

user202362
In machining, boring is the process of enlarging a hole that has already been drilled (or cast), by means of a single-point cutting tool (or of a boring head containing several such tools), for example as in boring a gun barrel or an engine cylinder. Boring is used to achieve greater accuracy of the diameter of a hole, and can be used to cut a tapered hole. Boring can be viewed as the internal-diameter counterpart to turning, which cuts external diameters. There are various types of boring. The boring bar may be supported on both ends (which only works if the existing hole is a through hole), or...

Today I successfully convinced an overzealous PM that Agile/Scrum was not appropriate for a small, 20-hour, deadlineless project with a development team of size 1. It was facepalmingly satisfying. I did not expect victory.

Kudos!

@JasonC So you're happy or unhappy about the victory?

I can't decide.

Sometimes I'm unhappy just because my prediction didn't work out

1 PM vs 1 "team". He's my personal PM. And I'm the one that got him hired in the first place back when I dropped this client when I was moving out of freelance. It's hilarious. There's a lot more ridiculous context here but I actually can't really chat right now. In return I promised a full project outline by noon (4 hours from now). I want to finish it while I'm motivated.

@Jason quick question... you work as freelancer now or not? Not really clear from what you said earlier...
(i.e. what's "personal PM?")

user202362

@ShadowWizard Yes I'm emergency freelancing by necessity to pay off the vet bills. "Personal PM" was jokingly commenting on the fact that this project has a PM whose only job is to manage me, and mostly he's just hindering the process (context: very old client, strong relationship, PM is trying to be helpful because that's what I hired him to do when I left 4 months ago, and now it's just funny).
I have to make $18000 this month, plus rent and food, otherwise I'm going to start getting slammed with interest. It's awesome.
Taxes can be a problem for another day...

user202362
cat vet bill costs $18000?

2:49 PM
@Telkitty no, only $10000
Jan 11 at 18:18, by Jason C
The my cat got cancer, I found him in bad shape on the 1st. had surgery a few days ago. Went well. He's pulling through and doing well. But the bills hit over $10k. So now I'm in panic mode, lol.
$8000 are for all other things @Jason needs in a month

@JasonC heh, still can't really get my head over this but from what I do understand, it's funny in a sad way indeed
So you hired someone to replace you as a freelancer four months ago, and now he's hiring you back and manage you?

user202362
You're receiving this message because you signed up for New Jobs on Stack Overflow

@ShadowWizard "Over $10k" was a quick guess from initial quotes. Final total $17856.23.

user202362
I put my blog site on developer story, but that's the only thing I did ..

Mostly lab tests and medication.

ummm... you have a custom Developer Story @Telkitty even with a website, so why won't you receive job messages?
@Telkitty so that's what it needs, the developer story is a CV/resume - it means you're looking for a job.
@JasonC omg.... wow. That's an expensive cat. :/
Hope the cat is fine by now?

2:54 PM
@ShadowWizard Something like that. Although the situation is more frustratingly vague than that. Basically when I was working for this guy I was doing the job of about three people. So I hired this guy when I left to replace 1/3 of that.
The cat is 110%. They did amazing work, and I would spend that money again in a heartbeat.

@JasonC sure, pet is like a child, in a way.
Still... having to work hard for the money isn't pleasant.

Unfortunately, the client never managed to find the remaining 2/3rds of my replacements. Hence the panicked phone call to me last month.

@JasonC the one in London?

Well he's based in NYC. London is just the location of one of his major upcoming projects, which is the primary drive (among other things) behind my current project for him.

@JasonC well, you need the money. It sounds like you know the client well already. Looks like you got lucky, in a way. No? (e.g. you don't have to start looking for unknown projects from unknown clients)
But can't you make the client put that "PM" aside and bring you back full time like before?
