Speaking of Quantitative Finance: today is 6 years since they went in public beta. Also, 6 years since Project Management launched... and they are still in beta. Not such great management, eh?

@JasonC that is grounds for defenestration

Lol

also, we use the dollar store version(s) of those brushes extensively
they're the best thing since ... the previous best thing!
Also, use a single sided grater with a bin
I know the 4 sided ones are traditional, but hard to clean

If you ever need a lot of grated cheese, this thing works pretty well:

Those KitchenAid mixers are looking mighty tempting.
I'm in the market for a meat grinder, maybe I'll just go for a mixer with attachments instead.
Well, I will be in the market for a meat grinder, once I finish paying off the vet bill debt. Soon, soon. I paid off one of the credit cards today, woo hoo.

Do any of you guys know what version of gcc the latest version of mingw ships with

@JasonC Eh... I have the meat grinder. It's ok, but you gotta cut the meat pretty small before it'll feed, and it's kinda tedious.

Oh
Deal breaker

@JasonC Go on ebay, or even your local craigslist, and search for "porkert" - they made some really nice meat grinders, and you'd have to really be dedicated to break one.
Say what you will about the Czechs, they knew how to grind meat.

Well, I'm not setting up a sausage factory, so hand-crank is good enough

3:41 AM
I'll probably end up with a hand grinder anyways due to current budget constraints.

turn with your shoulder, not with your wrist

I was just going to hold my arm stiff and do backflips.
Porkert's got a pretty big selection.

Supposedly someone's bought the designs and is bringing 'em back... But you want something old, something heavy, something you gotta oil lovingly after use.

3:56 AM
@Shog9 I like my women like I like my meat grinders...
I crack myself up.

@JasonC I don't own any attachments (my parents have a cabinet full of them getting dusty), but my mixer gets more use than any appliance that's not for coffee or toasting. My only regret is that I got the smaller one.

Do you do a lot of baking?

Correct. I also use it for whipping cream and that sort of thing.
I made fresh eggnog this year. It's amazing.

I feel like I would bake more if I owned a proper mixer. I've been scraping by with a cheap little handheld one from the dollar store. Baking is territory I haven't quite ventured into yet.
Oh nice.
For me, my most used appliance by far is my juicer. I love that thing. I use it for making nut butters, too.

A good mixer makes bread fairly easy. Pizza dough too.

4:03 AM
Making bread
That's going to be my next mission

We do that a lot
we have a fairly basic/generic bread maker that gets a lot of use

Homemade bread, homemade peanut butter, and a berry garden on my roof with homemade jelly. That's my next goal.

(though, kneading it by hand, and shoving it in a oven is so much better)

Can you make bread properly in a conventional oven

I recommend skipping the little yeast packets and go for yeast in a big-old bag. It's not very expensive and it's way more reliable in my experience. I buy it at Costco and end up throwing it out every other year or so.

4:07 AM
erm. Yeah?

I dunno for some reason I thought people used convection ovens for bread

@JonEricson we do that sometimes. Also not that hard to test if its good, especially if you do a poolish

@JasonC yeah, although depending on what you're going for you might need to make some adjustments

roar

We use one of these
about as basic/small as an oven gets

4:08 AM
We actually happen to have a bread maker on hand, but it hasn't been used in a decade.
brb, shower.

@JasonC convection ovens are probably better for even heat

@JourneymanGeek Holy crap. Add to the growing list of things that have blown my mind today.

but after a while, you understand your oven

Look how tiny they are!

@JasonC also good if you're a lazy cook

4:09 AM
Kasra has me thinking about baking steel, which The Food Lab has also recommended as a much less fragile, more effective replacement for a pizza stone

Oh, and there's a trick for oven fries...

...copious amounts of oil

On my induction burner I can get oil up to about 380f tops for deep frying, it's within french fry range; i've made some good batches in there.

ah yes
that's what I copied

4:12 AM
Oh nice

actually no. I JUST bring them to a boil.

> You don’t want to overboil the potatoes though, so he suggests you add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the water to stop the potatoes from falling apart.
That's a REALLY good trick, works for potato salad too

Any time you want that creamy fluffy interior but don't want your potatoes turning to mush

@JasonC also, if you're in a big city, find out if there's a kitchen/restaurant supply place

4:13 AM
I can see like five from my house

(good for things like said meatgrinder)
and they tend to be somewhat better made than consumer stuff

Or they're made to be disposable, which is also fine if cheap enough

That's funny. I totally forgot I could buy things at real stores. I'm becoming the people I hate.

restaurant supply stores are great for things like spatulas, spoons, baking sheets... Stuff that you're gonna beat on until it falls apart and then replace, and you just need 'em to be not made of lead or something

In my defense I bought a dishwashing brush at the dollar store today. No drones involved.

The cooking equivalent to Harbor Freight

Yeah maybe I'll browse a little tomorrow. I need a new wok spatula too.
Harbor Freight is where the world's most terrifying router bits live. Like 2" slot cutters on 1/4" shanks for $5. Bullet proof vest not included.

@JasonC they also sell knock-off paint stripping disks that disintegrate at speed.

Lol

But, for anything that's supposed to be solid metal, it's decent enough. Pry bars, wrenches, etc.
Essentially what Sears used to be: buy it cheap, use it 'till it breaks, take it back & they replace it. Rinse, repeat.

I associate Sears with deep, nostalgic sadness. There's a shopping mall near where I grew up that used to be one of the better malls in the country, then just... fell apart. It's nearly abandoned now. Sears was one of the last ones out.
At some point they dropped most of the department store and only left the auto shop in. Then even that couldn't hold on.

4:25 AM
Sears is sorta impressive simply because it held on longer than... pretty much all of its contemporaries
I mean, it was the Amazon of its day
Catalog sales
The retail operations were its pivot
Which then left them holding a crapload of real estate at a time when downtown real estate was losing value, fast

heh, yeah, that looks familiar
The malls were like their second pivot, if memory serves
"folks are abandoning main street for the suburbs, gotta follow 'em
They were slow on the uptake for the cheap edge-of-town big-box store trend though
But, at some point you gotta figure Lowes is gonna be hurting too

Yeah I never thought about it before but, no I hardly ever saw them in like, strip mall territory.
Or in those weird little store islands (dunno what they're called) with like a Home Depot and a Best Buy.
Actually I don't think I've ever seen a Sears in a space that only had exterior entrances.

I have. I don't know if there are any left, but you used to come across them in traditional urban department store settings
I forget what BestBuy was originally called, but I vaguely remember them as a kid being a strip-mall fixture under their original name and then - briefly - as Best Buy
They were originally firmly in the "sketchy music store / record store" niche though. They didn't really come into their own until they started doing the "former farmland now warehouse/store" thing.

It's just Jon going through a list manually. In fact, all this caching everybody goes on about ... all just Jon.

@Bart Jon the Cacher
Jon. It's always Jon.
Well, it sounds better than cache.

It seems badass

@Bart of course he is, he's asking to not make the nav bar sticky.

And coffee is also sticky, never forget that.

(I'm pretty sure I'll also dislike the new top bar, but can't really know as it's not letting me to opt in.)

Coffee is sticky? What kind of sugary Starbucks nonsense are you having?

@Bart even without sugar it's sticky when drying up on the keyboard.
It's like magic

Stop dipping your keyboard in coffee. Use biscuits for that.

@ShadowWizard last time when I accidentally got it due to the bug, it was big.

@Bart actually my keyboard is so dirty that sticky coffee only helps. It kills some germs. :D
@qwer huh? What bug? What big? The top bar?
(I saw screenshot of that, yeah)

9:30 AM
@ShadowWizard yes, the new top bar
around as tall as Skeptics's nav

@qwer yup. But what bug?
(sorry if it was reported on MSO so look trivial, I don't really visit MSO except for rare cases.)

Hello, SE. Some people are saying that Literature SE is now in public beta, as opposed to private. Is that true? If it is, then why is it not listed in stackexchange.com/sites#newest and why does area51.stackexchange.com/?tab=beta say it's private beta?

Hey @qwer why you point on @Bart? It's rude! :P

9:37 AM
@b_jonas caching? If you go to the Area51 page for the proposal, it does say it's in public beta ...
And it is listed in the list of sites you linked

Given it's attacked by spammer recently, I'd say it has gone to public beta.

Yeah, what @Bart said
> public beta start
> today

@qwer Ah great. So ordinary people can't find out about the site because it's not on the master lists yet, but of course that doesn't stop spammers.
@ShadowWizard "today" but already today, or later today?

@b_jonas the "today" tooltip says 2017-02-06 22:38:19Z

9:44 AM
So yesterday UTC

@b_jonas few hours ago. (didn't check the exact amount)
Whoa. +46/-63. Poor Tim.
Bet they didn't expect such an objection from the community....

@ShadowWizard Ok. It's a pity about this sloppy "caching". They should purge the caches so the site shows up in the lists or something.

@b_jonas it does show, did you try CTRL+F5 to clear your local cache?

@ShadowWizard obviously, the community is still burned by the recent happenings. As a result, many users are fearing that the tag could bring more problems. What I can't really understand is if the problem arose because Joel post was about politics, human rights, or simply... off-topic

@Derpy probably just because many felt it's off topic, and/or Joel puts himself above the rules.

9:59 AM
@ShadowWizard Yes, I did clear local browser cache.

@b_jonas did you try Incognito browsing?

@ShadowWizard Yes. I also tried to check from another browser profile where I'm not logged in to SE.

@b_jonas also, when you visit this page you say you see "This site is in Private Beta"?

@ShadowWizard No, that does say public beta.

@b_jonas oh. What is the exact URL of the sites list where you don't see Literature?

10:05 AM

@b_jonas hmm.... can you please post a screenshot of what you see?

@ShadowWizard Screenshot of site list when I am logged in

@b_jonas well, I see what @Bart see. When those weird things happen, I suspect userscript/browser extensions, etc. Can you try with a different browser?

10:24 AM
@ShadowWizard I'll try to check later. I blame the servers (maybe different servers have local caches that refresh differently), but ok.

@Oded hey, we need your expert help here.... any idea how come @b_jonas don't see the Literature site in the sites list? See screenshot above. Thanks!

@ShadowWizard Yes, I did clear local browser cache.

10:27 AM
Try over HTTPS - could be someone between us caching the page.

oh, forgot about this tip. @b_jonas see above ^

I bet you it's Jon again

@Oded you mean ISP is caching pages?

That's one example, yes. But caching proxies can be even further upstream (though less usual).

hmm... interesting.

10:34 AM
I tried the same urls from https, no change. I tried from another host with a different ISP, and from there I also don't see literature in stackexchange.com/sites#newest , and area51.stackexchange.com shows Lit as private beta.
Let me see if I have another browser on the original machine.
Tried with Chrome browser on the original machine, literature still doesn't show up.

11:01 AM
@b_jonas must be a greater issue. I see the site, I see it in the newest site list, but area51 list it as private beta, not public.
Oddly enough, it is listed as private beta only in the sites list. The detail page says "public"

@b_jonas really weird. @Oded any thoughts?

Could be a server side cache on one of the web servers.

@Oded ugh... so kick it. ;)

Literature had another proposal with the exact same name closed in the past....

@Stijn I think we're fine now. Thanks.

With git, in a local repo, is there a way to delete a directory but not have git treat it as something you deleted? Just like, make it completely ignore the fact that you deleted it?
Like I have a directory with some large files in it in the repo, and on my space-limited dev device, I don't need or want them there.

Adding the directory to .gitignore and then deleting the files should work
I think

I tried that, but then git thinks I added/changed .gitignore. So I at least save the space but I still have the problem of git nagging me about it.

Hmm, maybe look into sparse checkouts then.
Not sure if that feature can do what you want though
Why are those files in the repo in the first place? :)

4:47 PM
@JasonC you could update the index to have it assume the files are unchanged. Git itself doesn't really think on a directory level

@Stijn Oh I found a good overview of options (starting from "sparse checkouts", thanks): blogs.atlassian.com/2014/05/handle-big-repositories-git
@Stijn It's mostly raw image data and other data for a different component of the project. Arguably the better solution is a better directory structure or more granular repos but, really don't have the time or motivation for that.
@Bart i updated your mom's index
2

But aren't you really just limiting the size of what you've currently checked out? I mean, you still pull in the full history of your repo anyway

@Bart Yes. But there's this Git LFS thing I just learned about now from that blog, and GitLab totally supports it. So, score.

That's what we use here (Gamedev, so tons of large binary assets)

On a different note, I don't understand how every time I work on a project with a project manager I always end up unintentionally assuming the alpha role and managing the project manager.
I think there are way too many crappy project managers out there. It's super frustrating.
Either that or it means I should stop being a code monkey and start doing full time management.
Either way, there's a problem here.

@bjb568 Nooooooo
Oh god, I worked with this one lady, who was the PM, let me find any random email from her, hold on
For example:
Hey Jason

Can you answer the qz below pretty plz

I will send back to the ITA team thus

Thanks love
JUST TYPE THE GODDAMN WORDS
She sent that from a desktop PC. She doesn't even have an excuse.
Haha. In my email search box: "from:this-lady", 298 results. "from:this-lady plz", 205 results. That's over a 67% plz rate.

Yeah, she needs to respect her peeps, fam.

I'm also just now realizing, 5 years later, how many times she replaced periods with the word "thus". What an odd thing to do.
It's like her PC has a virus that replaces "?" with "plz" and "." with "thus".
The funny part about working with her was she was actually a decent PM, aside from the fact that talking to / emailing with her made my ears / eyes bleed, respectively.

For me, the weekends are mostly about spending time with my family, reading for leisure, and working on the open-source projects I am involved in. These weekend projects overlap with the work that I do in my day job here at Stack Overflow, but are not exactly the same. Many developers tinker with side projects for learning or career development (or just for fun!) and at Stack Overflow, we support all types of technologies, from professional to hobbyist. Whenever people are working, we're available to answer their questions. But what languages tend to be asked about on weekends, as opposed to weekdays?

@JasonC be happy, she called you love ...

@rene Illuminati confirmed?

Your call ...

You made me curious though

Nah, not Illuminati. Joel just sadly demonstrated himself to be the same old narrow-minded, socially-oppressive, politically-ineffective, presumptuous American stereotype that I'm embarrassed to be associated with when I travel. He's a case study in exactly why this country has so many social problems, and I expected far more from him.
