Really, that's all that matters.
That SE keeps pushing forward with it shows that they really don't know when to stop digging.

Some day, I will actually understand why the hell its so compelling ;p

(I was revenge cheering for Atlanta btw. I'm always rooting against the Patriots. It's my only solace, Pittsburgh can't touch them.)

We'd all kinda wandered away in the third quarter... Then... Riveted!

Amusingly, the only/first piece of news on the superbowl outside the ads in my news feeds is...
> According to USA Today, a Comcast spokesperson confirmed that there were some regional outages in Washington DC due to a pair of fires in the area.
... sounds like a hot game

@JasonC Isn't that everyone?

@Shog9 It was Matt Ryan's fumble. It was huge. And then the sack and the flag. And the Patriots desperate conversion. And like everything else in the last 30 minutes of that game now that I think about it.
I was totally checked out just after halftime.

@JasonC yeah, the fumble was the pivot-point
suddenly... "whoa - they're still playing!"

And then there was what's his names ridiculous catch that defied physics in the replay. The one that bounced.
I think it was Edelman
Yeah

@Telkitty So first of all the ideal "dress" for a romantic BBQ, as far as I'm concerned, is sweatpants and a T shirt. Second, I feel like if I can't take a date to a BBQ and have it be romantic, she's the wrong girl.

@Stijn talking about "useless" collector editions. And still, that is probably better than things like the badge from the Kingdom Hearts one....

I was expecting kind of active dialog between the team and the community in such a matter.

@ShadowWizard I'm kind of hoping it doesn't have a tag yet because he was expecting a bunch of feedback and wants to go over it first.

@Telkitty oh, it's old.... 6 or 7 years. I'm sure she's more mature now and won't do it again. ;)
@Stijn not talking about my own comment (don't really care, and it's just a comment), just ignoring the answers.

And for the record, I upvoted it - IMO Stack Exchange got full right to use their meta sites to their own needs, it's legit part of the deal.

I've downvoted, because I wonder the same as the current top answer: What is this actually solving?

@Stijn solving? Nothing. It's just making something "not kosher" into "kosher" by artificial means, by re-defining the rules. At least that's how I see it, and like I said, legit move.

@Derpy eh, it's a nice piece to put on display :)

@Stijn lol, well, got to show off sometimes..... :P

11:50 AM
... must be missing something about typescript import, otherwise it seems that the infrastructure was simply not meant to be used with angularjs.

First smiley in the world? ^

@Derpy it's more a problem of the 100 "standards" all being made to work together
add some webpack and you're in for a magical journey that'll make you weep

@Derpy what do you mean? I'm using AngularJS for a while, it's wrapping jQuery to bind stuff. Though I'm not familiar with typescript.

@ShadowWizard do I see "adidas" in there?

@Stijn no idea, lol... just saw this in a local media site. :)

11:53 AM
@ShadowWizard in TypeScript you can do import foo from bar, a bit like current gen and next gen JS. But it doesn't always work as expected.

@ShadowWizard Assume that I want to use angular and ngDialog. I would do something similar to:
import "./angular";
import "./ngDialog";

@Stijn well, according to this it's just a signature. ;)
@Stijn oh. but why? TypeScript fault?

@ShadowWizard the problem is that then ngDialog would be "resolved" and executed before angular has time to load (since the file is much smaller) and will break because of the missing "angular" static instance (since angular.js wasn't load at the time)
obviously, the easy answer is that ngDialog should have an import "./angular"; too...
but since I don't control that file... I cannot add the line

@Derpy or support some "chaining" of imports

@ShadowWizard not really, it's just that there are multiple module systems out there, and even library authors have problems setting it up

11:57 AM
so now I am wondering if I am missing something obvious somewhere.

@Derpy there's a way, gimme a sec to find some older source code...

@Derpy maybe synchronous import?

@ShadowWizard basically that, yes...

For certain Knockout things I had to use this syntax:

import * as ko from "knockout";
import "imports?ko=knockout!knockout-fast-foreach";
import "imports?ko=knockout!knockout-postbox";
import "imports?ko=knockout!knockout.validation";
but I don't really remember what magic made the syntax work

@Stijn do you remember the specific module loader you used?

12:09 PM
    loaders: [
    {
        test: /\.ts$/,
        loader: 'ts-loader'
    },
The infrastructure was set up by people before me, I only added some stuff occasionally

@Stijn That seem specific to that loader. But thanks anyway.
Also, I think that I may have found out what I am missing.
I use require.js at the moment, and shims seems to be the solution

in Discussion on question by gwr: Is having a propensity to downvote a good thing or is it showing a bad character?, Mar 15 '16 at 11:56, by Derpy
@gwr once I played on a UO server. They had a rule there "If you don't like the server rules, that one is the door". Looking back at it, it was a pretty extreme approach at things, and in the end, the server population got thinner and thinner...

2:37 PM
oh, btw, that server is dead nowadays. After living thru multiple provider changes, host failures, staff switching and so on... it finally collapsed under the weight of the "no longer care" curse
that said, it is funny in another way too... the good ol' "fake that you hate something because you don't want to be associated with it"

1 hour later…
3:53 PM
@Derpy huh? How is that?
(you still play Ultima online?)

@ShadowWizard In a society that has it roots in appearance rather than facts, it is important that you look at how you appear. For example, even if you happen to love anime, try to always look like you think that cosplayers are terrible people who lost contact with reality and probably should be sent to a mental-illness clinic.
Whatever you do, try to look like a productive member of the society, conform to its standards. Never admit you like different stuff, never show empathy when it is not strictly expected,

@Derpy this part I get and agree (that it's irritating), but how is it related to what you (and me) said before?
I don't fake anything... (I think)
And you also don't really hide your love to anime, ponies, etc. :)

@ShadowWizard oh, but I also don't share those concepts of "society" so to speak, so that is probably to be expected. To the "civilized users" I am probably just yet another Mad Hatter.
@ShadowWizard Anyway, to answer you question here... nothing specific, I was just somehow "amused" by the link about the announcement tag announcement, and by the linked Joel "rant" that somehow managed to fly unnoticed to me before.
@ShadowWizard and also... no, I stopped long ago. I just happened to see that the server was closed. It took longer than I expected, but atlas the cause was still like I predicted. I sometime would love to be wrong...

4:11 PM
@Derpy oh. Well...
@Derpy hmm.... so what you think will happen with Trump?
(just checking your future-prediction powers ;))

@ShadowWizard oh, but I don't "predict" future, at least not in that way. Just drawing my own conclusion based on the recent fact. Which btw it is always the same.
Less empathy equals more unhappiness
I think it was... John Stuart Mill? Utilitarianism? now... I am far from that actually, didn't try to give that idea a structured form or rules like they did.... And in a way I also doubt it would give any fruit.
But... sadly I think that is the only answer I will give, sorry. No need to start another politic rant, so I will just go for that "great discovery" I just posted. Yep, may sound somehow expected, prosaic maybe... but as I said in the Cube, it seems people nowadays like banal discoveries.

Yup, that's true.

4:29 PM
@Stijn just started alpha testing this morning - until today, only available to limited people and only as part of A/B tests. Adding configuration options when you're trying to test folks' reactions is usually a bad idea, because you no longer know what you're testing.
IOW, don't expect a response until it's had a bit of time "in the wild".

anyway, @ShadowWizard, if you just have to know, I will leave some other though in the Sugarcube. No need to bore out the other room users.

If it's all the same to you, I think you should avoid boring out anyone; that sounds violent and unpleasant

@ShadowWizard He will be removed of the presidential position in a near future
Which is geologically like the next second

@Shog9 I haven't been able to test it yet but I still know I don't want a sticky navigation. The post has +97/-1 score, so I think it's an important enough issue to at least acknowledge the concerns. Nobody's asking to have it implemented already.
I guess it's just part of a larger issue, I feel like there's a disconnect between users and developers (or project owners), we often don't know if they care at all. But don't pay too much attention to what I said, I allow myself to be more rant-y in chat.

... and the message some lines above is probably exactly what I meant, so time to "dolphin out"

4:45 PM
@Stijn So... You'd want a response that says... "We've read this."
How many of those votes do you suppose are from folks like yourself, who haven't seen it and just assume they won't like it?

@Shog9 ideally "we've read this and will discuss it in an upcoming meeting", yes. I'm aware of the existing Meta discussions about the scaling issue of responding to every question with a "we've read this", I don't at all expect that. But for questions with a certain number of votes, yes, that would be nice.
Even though in reality it's probably different, it kind of looks like a "we don't care" to some users.

@Stijn let's try a social experiment

...
well, at least that's a response, I have to give you that
I'm interested to see how people will respond

A: Unstick new navigation bar

Shog9This may be a good idea eventually, but making it optional while it's still being tested and designed just makes both of those tasks harder. Feel free to propose this again once the new design is finalized, tested, and widely used.

@Stijn My guess? Crapton of downvotes, folks pinging me two years from now asserting that this was the moment when everything on Stack Overflow went to shit.
You know, like every other post where I tell folks stuff they don't want to hear.
But... That's just the prediction. Let's see what results the test produces!

Is it possible for any team member to have a quick look at this:
On TeX - LaTeX we has \\ a lot...
...so when it goes missing...
...sporadically...
...it seems weird.
I have my speculations as to what might be causing it, but that's all they are... speculations.
The issue is highlighted by the fact that it affects questions or answers, but not always in the same thread.
There's never any evidence in the post revisions about such a change (changing \\ into \ and removing the line break).

OK, that's indeed weird

@Werner does it happen on post or once processed server-side? That might be hard to answer, sorry

@Werner So markdown mix-up?

It doesn't happen on post.
It seems to happen to older posts.
My suspicion is that it may deal with some back-end process...

pretty bizarre

5:40 PM
...a process that reprocesses post text and then somehow reverts \\ to \ minus the line break.

What's odd there is that we don't normally reprocess the source of posts; we modify the rendered output

Hmmm... normally...

I'm trying to think of a reason why we might've done differently here

I know the post modifications are sporadic, so it seems like an abnormal intervention that's causing it.

...it seems sporadic though.

OH NO. IT FLOATS?

@JasonC of course. That's the whole point.

Please tell me it doesn't float on mobile too.

@JasonC probably not in first stage, but later on.... FLOAT EVERYWHERE... evil laugh

7:17 PM
@JasonC there doesn't seem to be a mobile version yet

Here is a preview of a sticky/floating top bar for those who still didn't see: stackoverflowbusiness.com/talent
ugh... it's floating in mobile too. @Jason. So most likely the new SO top bar will do that too.
(though it gets a different look.)

Jason CDisable float on the mobile site Can you please make sure this doesn't float on mobile? I can't understand why web designers think that trend is a good idea. All it does is trade like 25% of the already cramped screen real estate (especially in landscape mode with the keyboard out, made worse ...

@ShadowWizard what the hell are you doing with a tomato on that?
I have tried (and continue to use) the plastic wrap technique for this purpose when I have need of it (say, when zesting a large pile of limes). It works well, not just for making cleanup easier but for wasting less of the precious zest. Note that it doesn't do much of anything to keep food out of the holes, but that's not usually much of a problem when zesting (I never use it for cheese). — Shog9 ♦ 33 secs ago
@ShadowWizard that is... Nothing like what it looks like on SO

!!/alive

@ThomasWard Kinda sorta

(sorry it wasn't pinging elsewhere briefly)

where did the help go in the new top bar?
Looks like the /review took its place :(

@Shog9 Fascinating. I need to try that immediately. When I first read it I didn't think it would do anything besides make a mess of plastic in the food.
I've been beating myself up in the kitchen lately. Between hot potato burns and cheese grater injuries I'm surprised I can still type.
Oh yeah and cooking bacon in only your boxers is always fun.

shivers
@JasonC don't put evil images in my brain, I remember cooking bacon in just underwear. Burns from the grease elsewhere.

I don't think you shiver from that. It's more jumping out the way and avoiding splattering

Living alone is so much fun.

@JasonC sounds like you need to invest in a mandolin

7:53 PM
@Andy the idea makes me shiver.
but you're not wrong.

@rene I think I read somewhere that it'd be hidden for high rep users, since you're less likely to need it

@Shog9 I have a ukulele. Will that work?

@JasonC can you easily cut the tips off your fingers while playing it?

Not sure. Challenge accepted.

(Major drawback of capacitive touchscreens: hard to use while your thumbs are swathed in bandages and dead tissue)

7:57 PM
@Shog9 you should get a pair of smartphone friendly gloves :)

"How do I clean the cheese off my ukulele?" is a classic XY problem.

mail gloves would be a good idea for mandolin users

are the snares supposed to do that?
