@bjb568 Why not just write assembly?

@AlexisKing I would if I had time. I like procedural stuff.

@bjb568 It’s interesting, undoubtably. I used to make SMW romhacks, and I learned SNES 65c816 ASM. Fascinating stuff! But software is about writing and using abstractions—the more watertight the better—and not about building everything yourself. After all, where do you stop? The operating system? The kernel? The microcode? The CPU itself? Software has seen great leaps in productivity due to better tools; learn from others’ mistakes, but do not tear down everything in kneejerk horror.

You stop when you have to. It would be great if I had the time to design the universe and set the physical constants, then put each atom together, then get around to programming an OS and finally an application on top of it…

I admire your devotion to reductionism. Have you considered academia?

o.O

@AlexisKing Yeah, but meh.

@bjb568 Why meh? (Serious question, I’m curious.)

Doesn't seem as exciting as going out into the real world. Lots of bureaucracy and school interests misaligned with yours.

Yeah, I get that. But it’d give you a chance to explore at least some of those things, while industry probably won’t.
Reinventing not just the wheel but the material the wheel is made from is not great engineering, but it can be interesting research.

This is great.

so with passport.js once you've authenticated somebody, how do you actually check if they're logged in later?

I haven’t the foggiest idea. Have you tried Rails? :P

@JasonC It's not that hard to make your own auth, especially if you're just using OAuth.
You can copy DD's code, there's both password-based and OAuth.

Passport's isAuthenticated() is completely undocumented.
Why... really...
It's like the entire point of the library.
@bjb568 I'm never asking you a question again.
It'd be simpler just to roll my own bjb.
Less dependencies.

1:51 AM
I hear you can even pick them up from your local pet store. The only downside is that they’ll probably pee on your carpet.

I've got the first line of rolling your own bjb:
if( ! jQuery) {
console.log("Needs more jQuery");
} else {
console.log("Cat Pictures");
}

Impossible! @bjb would never use jQuery.

2:18 AM
@JamesENL It's not enough. It should be:
function needsMoreJQuery () { return needsMoreJQuery(); }

Callbacks all the way down

It's almost as if there's a website for that phenomenon.

Just a random fleeting thought, but I find the following a REALLY interesting, good illustration of the importance of choosing the correct stack exchange site on which to ask a question:

And of course the S.O. copy of the question will rightfully end up deleted. But in the meantime, it serves as a very interesting, excellent illustration (in my opinion).

Q: Bookshelf/Bookshelf-modelbase problems adding functions and accessing base in extend

Jason CI'm trying to learn Bookshelf.js. I'm using bookshelf-modelbase to help with models, and I'm using password-hash-and-salt to help with storing passwords in the database. At the moment I'm trying to add a function to set a user's password, using password-hash-and-salt to generate a string that is...

I suck. Any of you bookshelf people know how to do this ^^^?

@zaq That's got to be a difficult venue for a speaker. Until the very end, it sounded like the audience was ignoring him. The stage setup (fire pits?) seems designed to distract people.
