Q: What's the code to get 30 lives in the original Contra?

JaydlesThere was a code you entered into Contra for NES to get 30 extra lives. You entered it with the controller. What was it?

Looking back, it's unbelievable that a Community Manager (!!!!!) would display such a profound lack of research effort.

@Bart @rene your votes are needed! meta.stackexchange.com/questions/286925/… :)
@bwDraco he wasn't VP back when he asked it, only ordinary user with innocent question. Really can't see any problem with that, and that's NOT a trivial question.
You can see here he started working in SE only in July 2012.
Though he did ask a question on a fresh beta site to boost its activity:

Q: How can I figure out which side of the car the gas hatch is on (without getting out)?

JaydlesAs a longtime New York City resident, I've never owned a car. I drive fairly regularly, though, thanks to rentals, Zipcars, and the kindness of relatives and other not-quite-strangers. Since much of my driving is done in cars I've never been in before, I frequently found myself pulling into a ...

Is this trivial too?
huh?
I downvoted because this isn't a hack; it's an indicator made for this exact purpose... and it only works if you're driving a car that has this arrow. Not all of 'em do. — hairboat ♦ Dec 22 '14 at 18:40
Wonder if she's serious...
...and looks like people keep trying to close it. lol

@rene thanks! Now where is @Bart....

?

oh, comments aren't oneboxed

I deleted that comment @Derpy

8:36 AM
@ShadowWizard meh ... edit?

I gave him a chance, he missed it.
No point leaving it around.

^ no need @ShadowWizard, we will....

@Bart nope, if one is rude and abusive on purpose, that's his problem.
Polishing their turds won't make then learn.
-100 rep (and probably some mark in their profile for moderators?) would, on the other hand.

I don't really see the issue, unless he has edited? If it's about the arse/mouth thing ... meh
It's colourful, okay, but not that disturbing.

8:40 AM
@Bart overtime you get used to things?

@rene the internet has ruined me

I must say I am with @ShadowWizard. He has been "warned" and asked to remove the useless rude part of his post. He didn't care. Maybe after a -100 rep gift he would start to.

Then flag. I won't stop you. I just edited it out and won't flag myself.
Hah, I see the author is Dutch ... there may be a trend there ... :p

lol

Not sure I want to get the joke there.

8:44 AM
an abusive flag is not for that
thats a case of editing it out and flagging for mod if the user keeps editing it back in

user202362
Speaking of rental cars, I have driven ute & truck before ...

@Derpy our use of language tends to be regarded as "colourful" by foreigners to put it lightly. Some even say we're downride rude. It's a bit of a cultureshock when we go abroad.

@Derpy exactly, thanks. :)

@ShadowWizard Thats not a good idea. These -100 rep also come with an IP block and most likely answer ban

And anyway, @Bart now have drama! /cc @rene ;)

8:47 AM
Not sure how it behaves for 900 rep users, but for newer users it absolutely does.

@Magisch nope. No such block or ban.
Spammers keep posting.
(until their account is nuked by a mod)

user202362
Truck driving is awesome ... coz driver's seat in the trucks is usually very tall & ... that feeling of power being in a bigger vehicle

@ShadowWizard Pretty sure 1 nuke = you're out

@Magisch it's just a -100 rep, hidden from public view.
@Magisch so you're wrong.

otherwise spammers who haven't been destroyed wouldn't make new accounts constantly still.
I'm almost certain a nuke does more then just -100 rep

8:50 AM
@Magisch even if it was the case, spam flag nuke != rude flag nuke
if the rude flags nuke really banned people, I fear we would already be 10% less at least

My highest voted answer on meta is warning people about using the offensive flag haphazardly: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/325542/offensive-flag-rejected/…
Maybe it only bans newer people (less rep) but I'm almost 200% sure it does ban people.

notice it is plural.

the giant S is there

I may send an inquiry to SE staff about that. I don't want to try it out myself, but I'm sure new user + nuke is instant ban
SpamRam does that. The majority of spam accounts do not get destroyed and they all post only once

@Magisch well, that rude user on MSE isn't new, it would just be -100 and no answer ban or block.

Probably
I would probably flag that custom for mod and the mod would probably tell them to cut it / lock the post

@Magisch yeah, after 6-8 weeks perhaps.
I still have pending flags from January.
Custom flags on MSE are pointless. (unless you don't really care when they will be handled.)

9:14 AM
@ShadowWizard In any case, reporting that post to SD was not a very good idea
It blacklists the user, and we just got another (false) report based on that in CHQ

@ShadowWizard I already dealt with it

oh, OK

do we need to keep this around?

......
Serious opinion here.
This user avatar ... anyone else thinks it may be a little.... problematic at best?

certainly unsavory

10:45 AM
@Derpy I'm personally not that sensitive but I can see how others might object to the image presented there.

the problem int this case probably isn't just how "sensitive" one is. This particular image also involves religion.
While I can fully understood (and probably prefer) that Stack Exchange keeps itself as a non religious organization, I think they may probably want to avoid content that may result offensive upsetting to people based on their religious belief

@Derpy Meh.
given how easy it is to insult some religion (non intentional) I don't think thats feasible

@Magisch I think that there is a difference between non intentionally posting some content that may result offensive to someone of a specific religion and taking some established iconography and turn it into a 8 bit videogame like screenshot?

What about products that mock religion
On game development.SE or arqade, would you think discussing games (with images) like binding of isaac inappropiate?

@Magisch This is actually an interesting argument. I guess that the context of the image should matter. I think that if someone posts a Nazi symbol while discussing the Third Reich history no one could really call it offensive... but if you start to use that as an avatar probably a mod will have a call with you pretty soon.

1 hour later…
12:13 PM
@Bart well, turns out it's all "fun" for him... well guess better just leave it be. -7 score, one delete vote, at least one red flag...
@rene nope, I cast my vote now... now it's @Bart's turn :)
@Derpy Problematic? Yes. Offensive to some? Yes. Flag worthy? Nope. Unlike in posts, users have more "freedom" in their profile page... it's not different than those using this as avatar, or this.
@Derpy well, Nazi symbol is a total taboo, same "league" as nudity and the like. Picture of Jesus crucified is not, as far as I know.

@ShadowWizard It's illegal to display in germany, for once
Unless you're using it in an educational context like a history lesson, depicting or displaying that can get you incarcerated I think it's up to 4 years.

@ShadowWizard given the rather realistic depiction of a crucified Jesus my catholic grandmother had hanging in her home ... I'm not sure the avatar is that much of an issue.

@ShadowWizard yep, that is why I asked. The point is that I don't know where the picture originated, but I feared it may be considered as a "parody" in some way, that's why I asked for opinions.

3 hours later…
3:04 PM
@Magisch yeah, in other places too, I think. But that's not really the point. :)
@Bart for you, but we must remember different people are genuinely offended by different things.

@ShadowWizard sure ... that what extent is up for debate, but sure.

@Derpy well, like with all other things, if you're personally offended or find it really inappropriate, flag away - just sharing my opinion I don't think it will have any effect.
@Bart that's true, and I guess moderators all around SE are handling lots of such flags every day...
hmm... I wonder, is m0sa on bug watch this week? ;)

@ShadowWizard nope, as I said, it seemed borderline to me, so I wanted to see what the community standing was about the potential issue. If this isn't seen as a problem, no need to flag for now.

@Derpy cheers, guess this one is resolved. :)

3:29 PM

Haha nope. Married with 2 children. I just like meeting new people.

Seriously though, none of the active Tavern users (except Shog perhaps) is in NYC. Bart is in Europe, Magi is in India, Derpy and rene also in Europe... not sure where zaq is from, but probably not NYC... myself in Israel (is it considered Europe? I always forget) :)

@ShadowWizard I believe Israel is technically in Asia

@zaq 2 out of 3, not bad. Harder isn't always stronger though.

user315433

@ShadowWizard My apologies about this.

@bwDraco all good, just better check before accusing, especially "high profile" users. :)

4:07 PM
It was just something to poke fun at. That was poor judgment on my part.

(we were all new once....)

Yup.

@ShadowWizard is high profile the same as high rep?

user315433
4:21 PM
In this context it appears to mean "someone high up in the SE management", which doesn't necessarily entail high rep.

It becomes tricky if you have an high profile that didn't get their diamond for some reason.

user315433
That said, Jaydles has the 2nd highest (cumulative, network wide) rep among those on the Executive Team, behind Joel.

user315433
Joel has 92K in his network-wide flair, Jaydles has 62K.

@rene tricky question... well, yes, I also mean high rep users. Maybe "users with lots of activity that got influence in Stack Exchange, may it be internal or just by sheer activity." :)
@zaq you mean current team... Jeff probably got more?

4:36 PM
You think this rep gives us influence? Whohohahahaha hahaahaha hahahahahah ... oh boy ... staph it ...

@rene not rep, activity... and yes, by requesting changes that actually get done and taking part in important discussions, we have influence... though sometimes it might be minor. :)

5:56 PM
@zaq what are the "other reasons"?

user315433
Like rep < 3000

I see. I would think most people with less than 20000 will have difficulty getting elected anyways.
> Why we need a hotness sort: What's a good answer is subjective, but a strong objective signal is a new answer slowly rising among crufty 8 year old answers.

user315433
On the rare occasions that I check out baseball standings, I like that they show the record in the last 10 games, in addition to overall.

user315433
Maybe having the score in the last 365 days, and ability to sort by it, would resolve the issue.

That's a possible solution.
Or perhaps the period over which it had the last 10000 page views.
Or both, whichever is longer.
Or let users pick
Having a standard would allow a server-side sort. Letting users customize the sort parameters would probably necessitate a client-side sort.
Of course, unless we can make the economic argument, it's hard for me to see Stack Overflow implementing this pie-in-the-sky vaporware.

@zaq I forget, do people comment on the voting parts?

Some stats on how primary correlates with the final outcome... (Note: I count "called up" folks the same as winners, since they actually won the election when the number of seats was adjusted).

user315433
Candidates #1 or #2 in Primary have always won (7/7)
#3 won 6/7 times (the only exception is OMGPonies in election 2)
##4-6 won 3/7 times
#7 won 2/7 times
#9 won 1/7 times, that was Jeremy Banks

They see a sober, serious candidate, none of that locker room tavern talk.

You guys are sometimes the only people I talk to all day. :)

user315433
If only they knew the truth...

Keep it on the DL, ok?
@HizHa I just read your profile. You're being humorous, right?

We used to have In praise of Moderators but it froze (which I'm sure is some moderator's fault). Seriously, chat rooms are for chatting. There are other venues for reporting such as the "contact us" form.

---------- I 'd like to see inside of that frozen room. How can I do that?

[Seriously, chat rooms are for chatting.] --------- I want to have that room created so that we can chat about that subj. matter. (It's not (to be) for reporting abuse)

user315433
@HizHa The name of the room is a link to the transcript of that room.

You have enough rep to create a room on chat.stackexchange.com just not here on chat.meta.stackexchange.com

user315433
Speaking of rep, I'm up to 500 on Stack Overflow! Hello Triage, my old friend.

user315433
Looks OK, Looks OK, Unsalvageable, Unsalvageable, Looks OK... I wouldn't call that "consensus".

user315433
Noun: consensus ‎(plural consensuses)
  1. A process of decision-making that seeks widespread agreement among group members.
  2. General agreement among the members of a given group or community, each of which exercises some discretion in decision-making and follow-up action.
  3. Average projected value, as in the finance term consensus forecast.
  4. consensus m ‎(uncountable)
  5. consensus
(5 more not shown…)
Adjective: cōnsēnsus m ‎(feminine cōnsēnsa, neuter cōnsēnsum); first/second declension
  1. (rare) agreed upon

user315433
So the plural is consensuses and non consensi... okay

Thank you... So no-one objects to my creating such a room, I assume.

Wasn't there an animated Gif of a bird feeding a cat and a dog ? (I can't find it now.) -- What was that white stuff in the pan ?

9:58 PM
@HizHa I don't recommend it.

user315433
But the downside of Triage is generating a bunch of fairly useless flags for CV queue.

user315433
The idea was that those questions would be swept under the rug, not shoved in someone else's face.

ok, I think my fan votes got corrected somewhat.

Wow. I am in 8th. 🎩 :-)

user315433
Looks like there are at least two candidates even less popular than you, so...

10:12 PM
@zaq :-P
Mean.
😬

user315433
For inspiration, see the stats I posted above: Jeremy Banks got elected after finishing #9 in primary.

user315433
I suppose that didn't have anything to do with the security flaws that he's so good at finding.... #rigged

I was thinking Andy and Bhargav would be strongest. I did not see deceze coming...
I had no idea how I would place.

user315433
Maybe the magic word is "professor". Sometimes seen as helpful and kind to those who know less.

user315433
10:17 PM
Which appears to be a desired mod trait among many.

I tried to emphasize empathy in the comments, but I have a feeling no one is reading them.

user315433
> I'd like to pick a candidate who's more helpful and kind to new users. -- meta.stackoverflow.com/q/337875

user315433
And that's coming from a 28K user, not a 28 rep user...

you did see the other post of them?

user315433
I see four, the latest being about quitting Meta.

10:20 PM
that one, yes

user315433
I downvoted them, actually, but that leaves the point about "kindness" being a sought quality in non-meta circles.

I never considered rage quitting but this only from meta becomes a joke, if you consider the account is recreated once you click there again.

user315433
> there's a more expedient solution to such problems that will eventually occur to us. -- meta.stackoverflow.com/a/337886

I'm going to steal this for future occasions when I need to vaguely threaten someone.

Only 38,800 insecure (http://) images in @StackOverflow posts left. We're working on it. @m0sa killed over a million last week.

user315433
Without us (or at least me) noticing...

user315433
They change the HTML version of posts, without generating an edit event or changing the markdown source.

user315433
Example: source has http images but rendered post has https.

Thank you... ( When I was here last week, I got much more insulting & unpleasant responses.)

So no-one objects to my creating such a room (for chatting about abuse by SE moderators), I assume. -- if anyone has anything meaningful to say, pls do. ( not just [I don't recommend it.] )

Wasn't there an animated Gif of a bird feeding a cat and a dog ? (I can't find it now.) (Was it removed? If so, why?) -- What was that white stuff in the pan ?

user315433
I'm tired of misformatted posts, time for SmallAvatars++

( When I was here last week, I got much more insulting & unpleasant responses.)

Last week ... By far the most arrogant & insulting was zaq, so I assumed he was some kind of a super-moderator, or something.

But I just noticed the number 145 next to his name. Is he a newbie?

zaq is a member of this room, just like you or I. But I advise that you look back at what you were saying as well and try and figure out why that might not have been appreciated.

@hichris123 That’s you or me. runs!

me, myself and I
what else would you need?

Q: Which is correct, "you and I" or "you and me"?

grokusWhen the phrase is used as an object, why so many native speakers are saying "you and I" instead of "you and me"? I'm not a native speaker but I thought "you and me" is correct. Not sure if this falls into the same category, but "Just between you and me" sounds more natural than "Just between you...

@hichris123 I can’t tell if you’re arguing with me or admitting you overcorrected. :p

user315433
This seems to favor Alexis's point. You probably wouldn't write "is a member of this room, just like I".

@AlexisKing I don't even know. :P

user315433
"just like me" or "just like I am" would work.
