A: Moderator Election Term

PeterBased on other comments, it sounds as if people are happy with Sam and Matt. And they are happy to continue. However Pat Patterson (metadaddy) has moved on from Salesforce and is only occasionally involved in projects that touch our technology. I suggest we hold an election to replace him.

user315433
For once, a call for removing a mod succeeded: metadaddy is no longer a Salesforce mod. (Most likely, resigned.)
user315433
The site surely needs more than 2 mods... they get 68 questions/day, more than English Language & Usage (which has 9 mods).
user315433
Although the mod requirements aren't really a function of the question volume... TeX - LaTeX gets even more (71/day) but seems to be doing just fine with the same 3 mods they elected back in 2011.

This hat will feature a boat wrapped in the tentacles of Cthulhu and will require pinging SHOG9

Q: Convert non-answers into new questions?

Marc GravellWe see a lot of occasions where a new user posts an answer when in fact they should be asking a question; for example here or here. Oh well. Just that it feels like a lost opportunity.
user315433
I've seen thousands of questions posted as answers (use a simple API query to find them, across multiple sites), and have no desire to see them posted as questions. For one thing, most of them don't make sense without the context of other posts under which they are placed.

I'd say it's not worth it. If they don't get the difference, make them go through posting an actual question. Don't do it for them. They won't learn from the mistake they've made.
It's why I'm also somewhat tempted to propose stopping migrations altogether as a feature.
user315433
I have another idea for a feature request: No new questions or answers can be created on a site until the word "cuz" is edited out of every post on that site where it appears.

user315433
This just in: posting bs found to be easier than providing objectively correct information.
@zaq so you plan to post an answer there?
2:18 PM
@zaq Just in: when not paid (and sometime been given free salt from a random passing troll) people prefer to think about easy stuff where they can make their imagination roam instead that technical stuff where they at best will get a vote if the asker remember to.
one of these day, Entity Framework is bound to make me crazy. As in, more crazy
@Derpy Hence why I answer more on the workplace
Deriving a MCVE from what is often a question lacking one, finding out exactly what OP wants through testing, then finding their error, then posting that to get at most 1 uv + accept and at worst nothing because op already left
eh
@Magisch Also, I think it is human nature in a way. It is easier to give someone an answer when the answer is either a researchable fact (example: what year did this event took place) or an "informed suggestion". It become more complex when you need a lot of work to provide a solution to a problem in an environment you don't have with often missing info and details.
Yesterday I got 15 upvotes telling someone that a thinly veiled "We're probably gonna hire you" email was in fact that.
And when you realize than then anyone can "trash" your work without even needing to say why, I think it is easy to see why some sites flourish a lot easier than others
@Magisch my best answer on SharePoint stays at 20 votes, an to translate that to SO "metrics" that probably would equate an answer with about 150 votes (note: this is not quality related, I only say this in terms of vote density).
On Sci-fi&Fantasy, I once got in the Hot Questions list and my answer got 51 votes....

I'm not sure how it is on other sites, but tags are very important here for determining dupes. "How do I mine for fish" in game A and "How do I mine for fish" in game B are different questions because they are for different games, and the tags will indicate that. But I don't see any tags in the annotation interface. Is that something you are taking care of in the potential duplicate algorithm? — GodEmperorDune 8 hours ago
user315433
Same for languages on SO... How to do X? is a different question if the tags are different.

3:20 PM
There is no mention of question tags in the paper. Unless "descriptions" means that, which I doubt.
3:32 PM
@zaq from the dupe proposals I got by pointing at arqade, I would safely say that tags are completely disregarded.
user315433
3:45 PM
Looks like a pretty big omission, then... Another piece of metadata I'd consider is views. The duplicates we want to prevent from posting are those where there is already a Q&A pair that has a good, often-read answer. (No need to worry about missing obscure posts that may be similar but aren't answered well.)
user315433
Maybe consider the score too, possibly anonymous feedback. But it'd need to be truncated, lest everything becomes a duplicate of the branch prediction post.
user315433
I'd go with: question title and tags as a query, question title+body as document, supplemented by views and scores (Q+A sum) for ranking purpose.
user315433

user315433
Maybe earn the association bonus first, and do those other things later... As of now, they can't even post meta announcements on some of the sites selected for study.
@zaq WTH is that

@bjb568 How did it go? I took math 2 as well in October.
(I decided to search this room for "SAT" and was unsurprised when you came up)
800 Math 2, 800 Physics, 740 Chem
About what I expected.
Math 2 increased from 780 2 years ago (when I did it right after I bought my calculator and didn't know how to use it), Physics increased from 670 a year ago after taking the second semester of Physics C.
@bjb568 Nice! I got 800 on Math 2 also. I was somewhat surprised with the new percentiles though. I was reading on reddit (where else?) that this test was the same as June 2015.
Huh.
@bjb568 I mean I knew the percentiles were low (last year the table said 800 was 93rd), but 80th percentile is a bit of a drop from that. I have wondered if last years tests were easier (making these percentiles deceivingly low) and now they are trying to bring the percentiles back up.
Yeah, well, I don't think the percentiles matter that much for us.
11:03 PM
I did Math II in June, wonder what the percentiles were for that.
@bjb568 right
@hichris123 Well the percentiles in my score report say they are based on "test takers in the prior year’s cohort taking this test", so I would assume the percentiles we have now are based on last years tests including June.
Mine says 81st for 800 so shrug.
