What, Documentation is great now? Last week it was turning into W3Schools. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMORE — Pekka 웃 yesterday

Wait, who made Documentation great now?

I love that we have meta because interacting directly with users is where the fun’s at. https://t.co/QvVcdFLXjF
Weird, Bill has a diamond (this looks like on mSE?) but yet no diamond on his flair.
Did Nick dev-tool in a diamond there?

@hichris123 would assume he grabbed the screenshots back when MSE was MSO and Bill was King.

@Shog9 But then Bill's SO flair would have a diamond. And it probably wouldn't say '13 because the split was 2014.

Huh, good point. Fishy!

Also, Bill's SO rep is just 10 higher now than in the screenshot.
Is Nick trying to tell us something about Bill? Secretly on some internal dev server, has he been given a diamond? Will he be taking over the world?

Right - thanks for looking. Just checked in another browser here and it's OK. That screenshot is from Chromium (on Ubuntu). Will see if I can find out what's weird.

@Dɑvïd are you on the chrome dev channel?

@rene Nope - standard release.

@Dɑvïd you accessed the site over https?

Maybe it needs more jQuery

that will work

8:06 AM
@rene Yes indeed.

@Dɑvïd Hmm, if there is a rogue ISP / enterprisy network engineer that normally solves these kind of issues

Definitely just Chromium, though - just checked in two other browsers and SoftwareRecs is fine in both. Oddly, it's only SoftwareRecs - Meta is fine, ditto for the other sites on the network I use. (My Chromium = Version 52.0.2743.116 Built on Ubuntu , running on Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit))
@rene Thanks for the suggestions; probably not worth worrying about, since not only is it "Just Me", it's also "Just Chromium". Thanks for the help, though!

@balpha Terribly sorry to (possibly) interrupt you... Could it be that chat has some "global" rate-limits, not only room-specific ones?

yes

hmm ... Could I ask you to look into this chatuser that we use as a feed of sorts
she's a bot that checks comments on SO for inapproprate referrals to post them to relevant chatrooms
Also she watches some github repos and posts updates on the repos into rooms
Did she hit those limits, and if yes, how can we avoid the limit (aside from reducing the overall volume)?
She already has room-based rate-limiting, I'm sure we can add in some global limits, too ...

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in body, bad keyword in title, link at end of body, pattern-matching website in body: Ethereal Ageless Skin Serum One secret to healthy by WillieSykes on arduino.stackexchange.com

@Vogel612'sShadow I assume the limit is per chat server and then the chat section applies. Unless you are generating so much traffic from your IP that the HA-proxy limits are reached. That would give you a 503 and you need to backoff for 60 seconds.

@rene the chat section only mentions the 20-second max backoff ..
that rate-limit is respected. Duga has code to keep the rate-limit
I don't think she'll hit the HA-Proxy limits, even though we had an increase in traffic lately...
the HA-Proxy limits are suited for corporate level traffic IIUC

11:58 AM
On the ha-proxy rate limits: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/249893/…

12:19 PM
@Vogel612'sShadow but if that is true why do I see 0 seconds between subsequent calls if I run this: $.post('https://chat.stackexchange.com/chats/20298/events', { msgCount:100, since:0, mode: 'Messages', fkey: fkey().fkey }, function(data){ console.log(data); var ts = parseInt(data.events[0].time_stamp,10); for(var i=0;i<100;i++){ var c = parseInt(data.events[i].time_stamp); console.log(c - ts); ts=c; } }); as the ratelimit guide says 1 second between two messages

Duga doesn't even read messages ...

That doesn't make sense
The bot post 2 messages within the same second. That makes it hits the rate limit
It doesn't matter if it reads or not

I can't even run that snippet ...

@Vogel612'sShadow go here, press F12 (or open Dev Console) post snippet in dev console
Make sure you're logged in

I was there, I am logged in ...
It's not the first time I'm trying to reverse-engineer chat a bit :)
fwiw: There's code handling backoff here

12:29 PM
That doesn't look good

fkey() is not a function
@rene yea somehow the formatting is borked...
@rene ah ... it was run in the context of an extension :/

@Vogel612'sShadow try this one

wonderful that works ...

@Vogel612'sShadow it is not the formatting... if I understand your code correctly you don't have a queue where you post messages in?

it's not my code... there is a queue

12:38 PM
Oh, OK

a few lines earlier you can see that the messages are put into a queue
the method linked is consuming the queue

ah, you're right, I see that now
@Vogel612'sShadow what is your configuration.getChatMinimumDelay()
sd f

@rene seems like 500 to me
hard-coded

@Vogel612'sShadow I would suggest to make that 1000 so you at least respect the throttle for that.
should be configurable in a config file but I don't know how that is done in java
