@hichris123 heya!

Hi!

1:43 AM
Good morning peepz
@bjb568 hows the internship going?

You know interns: 40 hours on, 10 hours off.

Actually I don't really. Australia doesn't really have interns. The current government is trying to introduce it in the name of free labour, but currently unpaid internships aren't a thing.

I was alluding to newly minted MDs.
Not industry interns.
Medical intern is a term used in some countries to describe a physician in training who has completed medical school and has a medical degree, but does not yet have a full license to practice medicine unsupervised. In other countries medical education generally ends with a period of practical training similar to internship, but the way the overall program of academic and practical medical training is structured differs in each case, as does the terminology used (see medical education and medical school for further details). == Australia == In Australia, medical graduates must complete one year...
They work these 40 hour shifts and 100 hour weeks, something like that.

Oh right

All our interns returned to their studies already, for autumn cometh.

1:56 AM
Poor bastards
Sounds like a death march to me

It’s highly controversial.
The physicians I've spoken with about it strangely support it. They explain that you need to understand your own judgement in life-and-death decisions at the far end of fatigue, what it does to you.
I didn't buy it.
That said, I worked those hours in my twenties.

I think a similar thing happens over here too, because for some reason spending money to ensure that we have enough doctors, nurses, decent medical equipment and that people have access to these services is seen as a bad thing.
Same thing for education

Education is its own kettle of flying fish.
I read a short-story once where the prestige and earning of doctors and teachers was reversed.
Teachers were sacrosanct.

The current massive debate (other than the gay marriage one), is if the government should be funding a program aimed at teaching kids to be accepting of LGBTIQ+ kids. Because the suicide rate of said LGBTIQ+ kids is five times higher than straight kids.
Isn't that just Norway though?

No, I think it's everywhere.

2:00 AM
Or one of those Scandiwegian countries where being a teacher is the highest paid job and surprisingly they have one of the best education systems in the world

> Suicide is the leading cause of death among Gay and Lesbian youth nationally. 30% of Gay youth attempt suicide near the age of 15. Gays and Lesbians are two to six times more likely to suicide than Heterosexuals. Almost half of the Gay and Lesbian teens state they have attempted suicide more than once.
Oh, I answered the wrong question.

Awkward segue

heh

But yes, currently the religious right is screeching about how we are wanting to teach kids to be gay

Researchers have found that attempted suicide rates and suicidal ideation among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth is comparatively higher than among the general population. LGBT teens and young adults have one of the highest rates of suicide attempts. According to some groups, this is linked to heterocentric cultures and institutionalised homophobia in some cases, including the use of rights and protections for LGBT people as a political wedge issue like in the contemporary efforts to halt legalising same-sex marriages. Depression and drug use among LGBT...

2:02 AM
and it's all grooming for paedophiles, and that we need to protect the innocence of these children

Far be it from them to try teaching gay kids not to hate themselves literally unto death.
> Suicidal ideation and attempts seem to be roughly the same for heterosexual youth as for youth counterparts who have same-sex attractions and behavior but do not identify as being LGBTQ.[15] This correlates with the findings of a large survey of US adults that found higher rates of "mood and anxiety disorders, key risk factors for suicidal behavior," are linked to people who identify as gay, lesbian, and bisexual, rather than sexual behaviors, especially for men.[16]
Now that I have no idea what to make of. The mind leaps at facile explanations.

Their arguments make little rational sense

We see that here too, especially in the um troublesome states.
Where by troublesome, I generally mean "red".

Did you hear the story that Queensland changed the age of consent for anal sex to 16 so it was in line with the rest of the country and the ages of consent for other sexual acts. One of the conservative MP's went on the massive rant about how it was terrible that 50 year old men would now be targeting 16 year old boys for sex, and how disgusting that was etc etc etc, but didn't once mention that 50 year old men targeting 16 year old girls for the same thing might also be a problem.

ewew ew

2:08 AM
And also failed to acknowledge that 50 year old men sleeping with 16 year old girls has been legal since the 80's, and that that might also be a problem worth recognising
Don't get me started on the marriage equality plebiscite........

Don’t ask the people; ask the gods.
Read: the high court.

Actually the plebiscite is about asking the people..... in the worst possible way.

The constitutional court whose decisions cannot be appealed.

Basically its a non-binding national vote on marriage equality, being pushed as a delaying tactic to appease backbenchers. At the cost of $200 million.
It's not a constitutional thing though

That's a stupid expense.

2:11 AM
Indeed

The reason it's constitutional is because each State must respect the marriages made in other States. And it was uneven, and the troublesome states were balking.

Oh you're talking about America

Yeah.

Gotcha
The insane thing is they want to give $7.5 million to both sides of the campaign, force TV stations to broadcast ads and remove the prohibition on ads having to be factual so that the No side can broadcast whatever hate message they've got about gay people.

I wonder how many tragedies it will take.

2:14 AM
For the bigots to change?

No.
Before they become unacceptable to the general populace.
Matthew Wayne "Matt" Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998) was an American student at the University of Wyoming who was beaten, tortured, and left to die near Laramie, Wyoming on the night of October 6, 1998. He died six days later at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado, on October 12, from severe head injuries. Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were arrested shortly after the attack and charged with murder following Shepard's death. Significant media coverage was given to what role Shepard's sexual orientation played in the killing. During McKinney's pretrial and trial...

Well.... their election margins were quite slim
Not slim enough... but still
Pauline Hanson got voted back into the Senate..... as if we needed a bit more hideous racism in politics
@tchrist I've heard about him before, bloody disgusting
What's the general sentiment over there about that rapist disguised as a swimmer who got 3 months jail for his crime?

I believe the general opinion is that his lap times were amazing
Also, he's a complete waste of oxygen

I knew there had to be more to that statement
Have the armed protesters outside his house gone away yet?

Now that I don't know.
Doesn't "Brock Turner" sound like a porn name?

2:21 AM
It kinda does now that you mention it

Damn.

Like a scene straight out of Saints Row 4

@tchrist if you feel like reading the above MP's statements and the delightful response he received

What an embarrassment.
I mean, like, the surname.

2:26 AM
He really is
Oh I mean, him, as a person in federal politics

squints
It’s the same thing everywhere, really.

Sad state of affairs

Just think: he gets to enjoy 16 year old girls the rest of his life and nobody gets to complain.

shudders

The way some people obsess on certain things about other people is some sort of pathology.

Q: The monster that can't be killed

fixer1234The microsoft tag is like something from a sci-fi horror movie. This manufacturer meta tag was cleaned out in March of this year, but the system won't remove it (maybe because a few dozen people follow the tag?). It remains in the tag list, and people keep using it. I just fixed the third ques...

Can we get a CM to blacklist on Super User?

I agree that Microsoft is like something from a sci-fi horror movie, but if you want a CM to ban its tag forever, you'll almost certainly need community buy-in on that meta post.

We need a dupe target for give me the codes.

What the fuck is codes?
Just delete it for bad English.

With a dupe target I could dupe hammer it. Otherwise it takes 5 separate people to handle.

I closed it, and delete voted both.

A: The monster that can't be killed: Blacklist [microsoft]

bwDracoI've reached out to Community Managers at the Tavern on the Meta as this can only be done by Stack Exchange employees. SE developers can blacklist tags so that they cannot be used—attempting to submit a question with a blacklisted tag will fail. Note that we need to show widespread consensus in...

updoted.

@Shog9?

hello

We want a tag blacklisted on Super User, have a look at the linked question and answer.
Kinda busy right now, though.

2:56 AM
Don't you think you should get more buy-in?
I mean, I do agree with you and all.
But getting buy-in serves multiple purposes.
It also provides a record for why the community came to this decision.
For that to work, it has to have the community participating in that meta post.

3:10 AM
Well that's perfectly reasonable.

@Shog9 And his fathers excuses that a year or more in jail "for just 20 minutes of fun" make the entire thing significantly grosser.

updoots.

@Magisch Geez, I just looked that up ... what in the f*ck happened to justice there ...

@Bart got paid off
and the judge imagined his kid in that position and didn't want to ruin his swimming career to much (the subsequent media outrage did tho)
part of why people of color get harsher sentences on average. most judges in the US are white. When they see a white kid brought up for some charge or another they have a higher chance to feel empathy and go down on the sentence, while that doesn't happen often with people of color.

I should not be reading the Wiki on that case. Damn stuff like that makes me angry

Don't post angry. That's sure-fire fail.

Either that or a glorious popcorn moment for others

Can a mod insta-nuke spam?
(as spam)

I think so, yes

Ok. Saw a spam post disappear with just 2 flags (well, 2 downvotes) and Community being the deleting user. So that would explain it

Yes they can

I should steal one of those diamonds one day, just to see the behind-the-scenes.

@Bart Diamond are just for vanilla people. Real crazy ones should go for uranium and titanium.
Or just become royal....

We'll never be royals. It don't run in our blood.

just find a tower high enough. Or steal your royal-status from a king... I heard once you may find one near a giant tree.

@Bart Occasionally we forget to zap the post before zapping the spammer.

As long as there is a sufficient amount of zapping

Still a nightmare tho.

Having nightmares?
Was it really that bad?

It's not that bad.
But it does make me not want to employ high school students later.

@JasonC even apart from top-level sites, I think off-language SOs are counterexamples

@JanDvorak Actually it does seem to be the case, that the first part of the domain name is used there. I think. I haven't done a 100% thorough investigation, but all the non-beta sites seem to follow that pattern (the sites with their own domain still use the first part, e.g. superuser for superuser.com). Check out this pdf i made: dropbox.com/s/vmi5o334k425fi3/sprites.pdf?dl=0

You'll find counterexamples as soon as you start relying on that

I relied on it and couldn't find any.
Not to say they don't exist. I just couldn't find any.

@Derpy I've just read something about iOS 10 - pretty sure that if you had iPhone or any iOS device, you threw them away by now. When reading first thing I thought was "omg, poor Derpy..." :/
@rene whoa, that's a first.... whole question as a picture... amazing.

9:20 PM
@ShadowWizard we have seen a couple last days

The author of SmokeDetector is in here at times, right?

@TravisJ sometimes

Same person seems to be running a bot that auto approves every proposed change to Documentation.

but you have more chance in Charcoal HQ

ok

9:46 PM
@rene with link to picture that contains the actual question?
@TravisJ there are several authors, each can make and commit changes... what you need exactly?

10:04 PM
@ShadowWizard - Mostly it was for the follow up. I could be incorrect, but does the same group, or one of those users, run the zaq bot on Stack Overflow?
I think it is accessing the Docs review queue on accident.
The zaq bot is kind of running a muck

in Charcoal HQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 17 mins ago, by hichris123
@TravisJ zaq isn't a bot, and that doesn't seem to be occurring?

I don't know why those notifications never showed up.
Hm, well it seems to be handled so nvm then, thanks :)
bai o/

10:40 PM
@TravisJ huh? what makes you think he's a bot? Just curious...
He's a long time user of SE, originally known as NormalHuman, but at some point he started changing names.

11:17 PM
@ShadowWizard - Chat notification took this long to ping me. Sorry for the delayed response.
Mostly it was from the rate of flags to days. It seemed like they were running in batches when I observed the change in the "helpful" count. I assume that it was basically just scraping once every n minutes for comments containing phrases which can be deleted with just 1 flag, and then flagging them all, then repeating every n minutes.
I am leaving early today, so I wont be responding until tomorrow
