Monero is in private beta.

heh, clicking that URL lets you browse the questions, but if you press cancel on that page, you get nothing
I'm never sure about kenorb's involvement with a51. is he trying to get a diamond or something?

user315433
Some people get involved in pretty much every beta.

so I'm writing my fifth scraper project
This time in JavaScript, versus nearly every other language the other times
it's coming along okay, besides Mongo being a pain to learn

@Quill I'm stuck in the 1980s, but the keyboards looked like:

For shame, Google. It skips 998. (I remember because I blogged about this.)

@ᴡᴏʀᴅs Read the Google string-matching post. I love it when one of your children comes back to you.
In this case, lookaround, although that one is not especially inventive. Autovivification is more creative but less regarded.

@Shog9 Do these things just come to you when you're floating in Shogspace?

if by that you mean reading chat, yes

2:30 AM
We are all floating in Shogspace when on SE

but now I'm trying to imagine an expression that rewrites itself

Wouldn't that be an AI

not necessarily

user202362
Serious, there is no real A.I. otherwise I should be able to tell the computer: I want you to implement this algorithm, here are the constraints (shortest time, best memory management etc), implement this for me in 90 mins.

if there was real AI, it would have already launched a site for itself

user202362
2:32 AM
one site? be ambitious, why not 1000 sites?

user202362
actually, overtake the internet

user202362
damn, only if there were bots smart enough, we could even put them as nominees for the next election

But still waiting for launch, while Monero went ahead today.

user202362
only if bots know how to give out misleading information, that would be a leaping step for A.I.

should I commit to it just to ruin that number? is that spiteful?

Is this like a RegDwigнt phase, @ᴡᴏʀᴅs?

@Telkitty I've actually been planning to do something similar. I wrote a express app that generates random (see definition of bias) page content based on the requesting domain, I just have to buy each domain and point it at the reverse proxy and they're all good

It's a really good resource for regex esoterica.
It doesn't seem to have caught up with the "new" Perl syntax for regex class intersection, but that's ok since one can always use lookaheads.
(like for Arabic Letters, etc)

var emrakulPostId = 37417;
$.ajax({
    type: "GET",
    url: "/posts/" + emrakulPostId + "/votes",

});
this code reveals the server politely declines these requests

@Quill To be fair, it's simply because you've read more stuff about software licences from the United States than from elsewhere in the Anglosphere. The US uses license for both noun and verb, while everywhere else with English as a mother tongue uses licence for the noun and license for the verb — like advise/devise vs advice/device but without the voicing change. And common Romance only uses -c- for both.
Commonwealth speakers often make the opposite "mistake" and use -c- for both, but the norm outside the US is to distinguish noun from verb.

Here's how it works: the first answers rise to the top and stay on the top because our current sort values votes that are 8 years old as much as votes that happened today.

@AaronHall heh, you're still on it...

We should all be on it if we really want the best answers to rise to the top.

2:58 PM
We don't want a bunch of one-offs to "deprecate". We need to automate. The way to do that is: 1) Unpin the accepted answer after 1 year, and 2) value more recent votes more than much older votes.

Or maybe @Jon did it?

#blamejon
@AaronHall go propose that on Meta?
We are aware of the Stack Overflow issue, working to address it ASAP.

I think I have too much to gain from it, and it will not be accepted coming from me.

@Bart too bad they almost never update their official channels

Given how important an issue it seems to be to you, you'd have a lot to gain. And I don't see why you proposing it is of any influence on it being accepted or not @AaronHall

@AaronHall but really, did you start an official feature request in MSE or MSO? Here you gain very little by repeating those things.

@Andy The racks are anchored. (Both ceiling and floor, if I recall correctly.)

We both know that all actions that appear to be driven by self-interest usually receive a very poor reception.

when looking at your own profile, on main sites only, if you have between 125 and 3000 rep...
...for each question between 3 and 60 days old with at least 1 answer that isn't closed or bountied...

3:05 PM
@ShadowWizard I don't like to rant, you know that.

@Bart sure. You like popcorn and watching drama. ;)

haha

(and sitting on ducks)

This isn't a rant, it's a UX problem that needs fixing.

@Aaron seriously now, I doubt many care as much as you do. Not trying to demoralize you, just trying to make you lower expectations.

3:07 PM
@ShadowWizard do you want the oldest answer at the top, an arbitrary answer (pinned by being accepted) or the one with the most of the recent votes, say over the past year?

I also think that certain bugs are deal breakers and really awful, yet accept the fact it might take years until they're fixed. That's just how things work.
@AaronHall of course I want the best answers to be on top. Problem is, it's nearly impossible to have an automated system to detect what is the best answer.
And if you got a brilliant idea how to achieve this nearly impossible thing, go ahead and make a concrete suggestion. :)

how about a system informed by votes and the timing of those votes?
What I propose is pretty simple.

So create a new account and use it to post your idea. This way nobody will suspect it's biased.

Write it up and post it. Stop worrying about perceptions
If it is any consolation, we all hate everybody in equal amounts

Top answer rank sort should be based first on the votes over the past year, and then total votes (to break ties).

This way you'll also see who really supports it, here we don't have many users.

Nah, I don't do sock-puppets.
It's just a matter of laziness. I don't have the time.
Maybe I will write it up.
But I expect it to get down-voted to heck.

Take your time. There is no hurry. You don't need to finish it right here, right now

@Bart considering he's on it for months now, I'd say time isn't the issue. :)

Exactly. Do a proper write-up over another month and you should have a pretty damn good post.

3:15 PM
I'll think about it some more.
gotta get back to work.

oh my, SO still down.
@AaronHall good luck!

@AaronHall worst case, do a writeup, put it somewhere where we can see it, and we'll look at it before you post it.

hmm... MSO is up

Q: We are aware of the Stack Overflow issue, working to address it ASAP

JonHStackoverflow.com seems to be down. It appears to be service is unavailable. Is it just me or is everyone else experiencing the same issue? I checked the stack status Twitter account, and there is no mention of maintenance. What gives?

@Bart yeah, Google Docs is one option
Anyway, hope that unlike previous crashes, they'll tell what happened this time. Love the gory details!

spoiler: regex sucks! https://twitter.com/Nick_Craver/status/755784084719370240

:D

We are deploying a fix to the web tier now. ETA 3.5 minutes for a full deployment.
Stack Overflow is now coming back online. Details to follow.

FYI, congrats, you broke StackOverflow. twitter.com/Nick_Craver/status/755785404285067264Will 1 min ago

Nick deleted his tweet pointing to that question... it was

user315433
> This was the post that took down the Stack Overflow homepage (and as a result, our load balancer health check): stackoverflow.com/questions/38484433/…

user315433
Perhaps a revision was redacted, I don't see a reason for it to break anything.

@ᴡᴏʀᴅs yeah, Nick hard deleted 20k characters or so.
Wonder how a single post was able to break SO like that.

3:30 PM
essentially, there was an expression that looked for "whitespace followed by end of string". And it encountered tons of whitespace but no end of string.

If we could rank our answers correctly, we would have likely avoided this whole thing.

Add that as an argument

user315433
Also, DevDoodle doesn't have this regex problem.

@ᴡᴏʀᴅs yeah, it's been redacted now but the original revision had an extremely large number of spaces at the end of one line of code.

@ᴡᴏʀᴅs Of course not.

How good of @bjb568 to still keep supporting smaller amateur sites like this one

thinks of other brash assertions to argue for his desired outcome

is confused

@Shog9 Reminds me of this one, heh
Different problem area this time though, it looked like. Amazing how well some people manage to abuse Markdown, heh

eh; I think the lessons here are,
1) we could really use a tool for cleaning up code as it's being posted
2) Unicode ruins everything

Lessons here, lessons everywhere.
SE and Unicode is like water and cats.
or like lipids, but also like cats

Sure, no question can be posted until code passes a linter.

user315433
For Python, use Flake8 with default settings, that'll teach them...

Can my proposal be implemented as a userscript?

@ᴡᴏʀᴅs Python would get 1 new question a month because everyone would just give up with the flake8 errors. That one question would be Martijn wondering if everyone was still ok and then migrating it to meta.

:D
The linter should also ban PHP.

Agree

@AaronHall Sure, a userscript could re-sort answers; in principle it could also look at the timeline to see the dynamics of votes, but it gets complicated then.

Just ban all content. Then we solve the bad post problem as well. Sure, we'll catch some false positives, but that surely only a tiny percentage.

@ᴡᴏʀᴅs that was precisely my idea. I've never made a userscript before, and I'm unsure how to get started, can you point me in the right direction?

user315433
@AaronHall Stack Apps has a bunch of examples, such as Quick navigation between answers by nicael

user315433
nicael did something useful...
