Are there any queries around relating to active answerer counts?

12:28 AM

user315433
@Quill Here is one: unique answerers per month

Thanks
I'm doing a little math on finding a realistic goal for a community "let's answer stuff" bounty challenge thing

user315433
There is another query that excludes one-time answerers by requiring at least 10 answers (not necessarily in a month). As written, it's limited to the past year, though easy to edit.

user315433
Web Apps answerers are about 25-30 in number...

user315433
And then someone argues that WebApps - forum too broad!

user315433
Migrations from SO.

Goddamn it. Basic type coercion question gets HNQ... stackoverflow.com/q/37998267/3296811 There's probably half a million questions with the same answer of "it's called type coercion" out there unflagged as dupes

user315433
But this one has an answer that's better than "it's called type coercion".

He's already answered the same goddamn question: stackoverflow.com/a/5101991/3296811

user315433
Doesn't cover inequalities, which is what the newer one is mostly about.

12:48 AM
Meh, it's all the same root issue.... yet we have iteration after iteration of "omg. js is broken, look at thing it does with =="

user315433
Well, I didn't know that >= and == coerce dates differently, and I wouldn't learn it from the older question.

@nicael The hint is that you are more likely to find it if you participate on the site more.

Am I the only thing who thinks that humans are too dumb to create real A.I.?

user202362
I mean A.I. research has been going on for 30+ years, if it's possible, wouldn't that has already been done?

Meh. a lot of the barriers are related to computing power

user202362
I think it has very little to do with computing power

Research in biology has spanned thousands of years. You could apply that same argument to 'why haven't we cured all diseases?'.
(meaning, research takes time)

@Telkitty Well, you're calling yourself stupid then... if humans are so stupid, how are you aware of that if you're stupid?

user202362
we are all idiots of different degree

@Telkitty Doesn't acknowledging that demonstrate some intelligence though?

@soup I'm not so indifferent here.... chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=meh&user=145604&room=

user315433
I perceive a positive correlation between using JS and saying "meh".

No, that's the PHP effect.

My first tag badge was PHP

user315433
Unrelated: how stupid it is that we can have an RSS feed of all messages containing "meh", but not a feed of all messages in the chatroom?

or regex searching for that matter....

1:21 AM
hey

hey there @tchrist

Guess it's not possible to return badges you're embarrassed to hold.

also apparently if the UK leave the EU, Australian tourists will lose their visa privs or something

I was actually talking about PHP badges, not EU badgers.

I'm seeing a distinct lack of Smokey. Is Smokey still disabled for here?

user202362
handled in other room(s) probably

1:30 AM
@Quill No, there just isn't much spam yet. Happy hour starts at 4 UTC.

Ah, I see. I haven't been in Charcoal much lately to notice.
@tchrist I'm not embarrassed by it. I got PHP experience, I can do PHP, I've got the tag badge, and it's on my resume.
It's still a language, whether or not certain people don't like it

Someday you will choose to omit things from your résumé.

On a side note, PHP is most chatrooms' external enemy:
> The external enemy -- nothing causes a group to galvanize like an external enemy.
So even if someone isn't really your enemy, identifying them as an enemy can cause a pleasant sense of group cohesion. And groups often gravitate towards members who are the most paranoid and make them leaders, because those are the people who are best at identifying external enemies.

user202362
Programming languages are like tools, you choose the right tool for the task in your hand.

1:38 AM
@Quill You've not missed much, other than a lot more noise.

That's why I've been avoiding it. I don't want to deal with some drama because people want to view feedback as gamification
I liked it more when feedback numbers weren't available. In fact, I didn't even know my name meant anything to how I was giving feedback

user202362
There is no 'better' or 'worse' for any commonly used languages in this world. You can only say for a certain task, which languages suit better.

It's not even that noise. It's just...noise.

@Andy I'm fine with SE-related noise. Non-SE related noise belongs in here. :P

I've complained all I'm going to. I tried to say my peace in there - got a bunch of stars, not much changed. Smokey is good, but users are using it to game Metasmoke and SE at the point - both for bigger numbers on each and to troll spammers.
I'm just stepping out for a week and enjoying my vacation. I'll fight that battle when I return :)

user315433
1:43 AM
Solution: ignore everyone but Smokey.

Or ignore everything, that works too...

user315433
But vacation is a better solution still.

Eh. That doesn't work. There are legitimate conversations that I either want to see or be part of. I'm going to just stick with "enjoy vacation and worry about it later"

Yeah, that's a good idea. Except occasionally writing something when on vacation gets upvotes (I wrote meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/325787/… on vacation)
Although I only wrote that because I didn't like how many upvotes the question had gotten. :)

I think I'd prefer if England stays, but that's very subjective. I'll be the first to say that I'm not at all familiar with all the issues.

PeanutOn Stack Overflow and similar sites, it would be nice to be able to embed .SWF files like you can with single scripts and images. So I just cracked down and got productive. I finished the MVP this afternoon, even tho it was projected to be done next Wed. The other interns say functionality doesn't matter and have their own (build-failing) branch where they add on to what I write (wrote, hours ago, they're out of date) with React (rather than replace it, even tho their complaint is that my code is unreadable, which they're not changing (nor is it valid criticism)).
They literally don't care about user-facing functionality. They just want to stroke their hipster mustaches and make "the code look good".
WTF.
At least they're prevented from merging into master until they fix their own huge pile of bugs that prevent the build from succeeding.

@bjb568isnotapebble Multi-Vessel Launcher?

I've wrote the entire thing and they just want to delete it.

Then grow a mustache and have your words.

Babel is a transpiler it doesn't bloat that much

9:44 AM
But we don't need it.

anyway, most browsers support ES6, you probably only need it for jsx support

Productivity is no longer writing features of fixing bugs. It's trying to indoctrinate me into the world of loving bloatware. They just try to argue with me all the time.

Hush, @Quill. I wanna hear more @BJB rant.

Wow, that's a bad tag wiki. Probably copied from somewhere too: stackoverflow.com/tags/confluent/info

I wonder if it would be possible to compare the search results in the related questions dropdown for the ask questions interface with the search results of only roomba'd questions to be used as some sort of indication of problems. If there are 4000 roomba matches and only 150 related matches then perhaps it could be a sign that the question will fall into a common pitfall. Does that sound reasonable at all?
Or, more broadly, is there any signal that can be derived from the roomba to help users when asking questions?

Hmm, that's an interesting thought. But it would be really hard to get data on that...

@hichris123 - Hard to get data on which aspect? Couldn't it be tested using the general "A/B" group testing approach and just comparing closure rates?
Or perhaps a myriad of closure rates, vote counts, and views.

@TravisJ Well, I'm not sure much of the related questions data is even logged, no less taking into account deleted questions.
