@soup Interesting. How did you stumble upon that?
@JamesENL He hasn't been kicked... yet...

@hichris123 Alright

user202362
I can understand why spammers are trying to sell degrees on Stackoverflow, what I don't understand is that why are spammers selling anti-aging creams and weight loss pills on Stackoverflow - got many audience?

user202362
dumb spammers need to learn targeted marketing

It's a textbox on one of the most popular sites online. Why not spam there?

user202362
would you pimp some female prostitutes in a crowded gay bar?

user202362
1:41 AM
gay bar ... not gay & lesbian bar

Are you saying Stack Overflow is a gay bar?

user202362
I am not calling spammers pimps

user202362
@Shog9 But ... are you suggesting something ;)

user248725
@Shog9 I like that idea, except for the fact that I'm not 21 yet.

@QPaysTaxes she specifically said "not lesbian"
Now, I'm not sure how all this stuff works, but that sounds pretty exclusionary to me
And we here at Stack Overflow Heavy Industries are not about exclusionist behavior.

user248725
1:49 AM
Just because it's a bar catering to homosexual males doesn't mean females are barred from the premises.

user248725
It's exclusionary in the same way that McDonald's is exclusionary to people who care a lot about their health -- they're not the intended audience.

user248725
Unrelated, is there an official Stack Exchange policy on comments on spam posts? For example, if I post "This is spam. Taking this product could have severe side effects, including but not limited to death. Consult your doctor before taking any non-FDA certified or untested products advertised as means by which to improve one's health." on a spam post advertising vitamin supplements, is that considered "mean" or "abusive"

Why waste your time with the comment?

Yeah, especially considering it's unlikely anyone will see it...

So in this increasingly complicated metaphore, who are the people who care about health that Stack Overflow doesn't cater to?

user248725
1:53 AM
@Shog9 What? I just said I liked the idea of Stack Overflow being a gay bar.

user248725
@Andy Because as an EMT I'm morally and legally obligated to point out blatant risks to one's health?

user202362
Would lesbians hire female prostitutes?

user315433
@hichris123 A tweet by asmeurer

@QPaysTaxes no. Because, who cares? It's spam.

@QPaysTaxes Well, spam on SE is dealt with pretty quickly. If you are morally and legally obligated to do so, I suggest you point your browser at some other site (say, reddit?) and chase down all the poor medical advice there.

user248725
1:56 AM
@Andy I'd be there all day. I wanna get something productive done.

user248725
Also, unrelated to obligations, it's fun to pretend I'm helping

user248725
@Shog9 Good to know :)

user202362
All I am saying is that, since there are so many homework questions, obviously there are heaps of people who care about getting a degree visiting this site, and degree spammers are targeting those people.

user315433
@hichris123 Except reviewers in LQRQ. I sometimes leave a comment on particularly tricky cases, such as a copy of another answer with an extra link. Kind of unfair to reviewers to use these as audits.

Trying to understand why spammers spam is pretty pointless. A better goal would be trying to understand what spammers do when they spam (spam patterns). Which Smokey does, and SpamRam does
Target audience, Location, all these things don't matter.

Jeff Atwood on November 16, 2010
As Stack Overflow grows -- or any other Q&A; site in the Stack Exchange network, really -- there's a natural pressure to discover and link duplicate questions. The more questions you have, the higher the possibility a given new question isn't in fact a new question, but a duplicate of an older existing question. Because of this, we've continually enhanced the tools for finding, linking, and merging duplicate questions:

12:33 PM
@Nzall on MSE, good chance that's me, lol... like I said: all good. No need to delete.

Do your best to avoid duplicates. But if they happen, don't worry too much. It happens to everyone once in a while.

user202362
first define: duplicates

user202362
there are a lot of similar questions

@ShadowWizard ¿

My main concern is that, because being flagged as duplicate gets you closer to the question ban status, a user that's not familiar with the exchange might have a couple of questions they post where because of terminology they can't find the original

12:35 PM
Luckily there is just one @Telkitty

user202362
@Bart so, your clones: if you could, would you clone an army of yourself?

@Nzall only if you ask duplicates over and over again, which is unlikely if you do your research.
@Telkitty I already have enough of a problem with one of me. So no.

user202362
but there would be more you solving those problems too

@Nzall if the question score is not negative, I don't think it counts toward any ban.

12:37 PM
@Bart That's the thing: it's quite easy to miss duplicates on a site the size of SO

@Nzall with your rep and activity on SO, you really shouldn't be worried any more.
For new users you might have a point though.

@Nzall I have yet to see a user getting banned for asking (well written) duplicates. Most of the time the questions themselves are crap, or such blindingly obvious duplicates that there really is no excuse. Don't worry too much.

@bjb568isnotapebble why are you not a pebble?

user202362
why are there so many people who only sleep 5-6 hours a day??

2:16 PM
I only sleep 4 hours a day average
you get more done by doing that

user202362
I become a zombie if I do that

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Me am KITTEH!
@Quill o_0
I'm sleeping 9h/day, 'cause I have the time now.

user315433
@Quill Not for long. Been there...

@bjb568isnotapebble that's obvious. Are people mistaking you for a pebble?

it's interesting to note that MSE appears at the top of /sites, but MSO is much further down
I thought it'd be the other way around

user311528
why?

Because MSO split into MSE and MSO a while ago, but MSO existed first

user311528
okay

user315433
2:52 PM
No, MSE existed first, back when it was called MSO.

the name MSO existed first

@ShadowWizard What do you think would be best, pinning a message with [Town Hall Part 1] [Town Hall Part 2] or pinning the oneboxes?
@soup Yeah, mSO -> mSE and then a new site was created, mSO.

meh

??
Was Sleeping

unless they've fixed pinning oneboxes to actually show something meaningful I would pin a message.
(just my $0.005)

Jon Skeet's greatness impressed me so much, that I now think less of my family and friends. So while he may only have directly reached me, the fallout area is much much larger. — Bart 6 hours ago

yay free comment flags

@hichris123 pinning a message with [Town Hall Part 1] [Town Hall Part 2], the onebox will only show a link

@hichris123 hilarious. Got to love that guy

the guys has obviously been stalking skeet

Everyone does

user202362
I stalk some other people ... I don't follow them, I just stalk them whenever I feel like it

If we're not supposed to stalk people why did God invent Facebook?

user202362
no facebook account

@KutuluMike If God claims he did, let's meet with the lawyers of Facebook ...

If stalking is like hunting, facebook must be like a farm.

It's not a farm
Facebook is a global meat provider
I'll guess they sell human meat, looking at their clients

@Unix global meet provider?

user202362

In good Dutch they sell gebakken lucht

Caching what?

@bwDraco nope, I can smell static contents from 1000 miles away.... ;)

@ShadowWizard Manually updated? Yuck.
Not a developer in industry, so wouldn't know.

6:45 PM
@bwDraco yup, looks like they just throw whole contents into the database

@ShadowWizard there is also something wrong with the scaling of the images ...
