@soup Body is trickier. These messages pop up after the field loses focus. For the body that means after someone is done typing their question. That means folks are less likely to heed a warning that tells them to redo work.
@soup Bad question title in Japaense too -- it says, "Question: C"

> The problem is in the nature of what gets closed: boring, obscure questions tend to be ignored unless they're overtly offensive or blatantly off-topic, so the questions that enough folks actually view to close tend to be those that... aren't as useless as they first appear. Turns out finding drugs that kill cancer isn't hard; lots of things kill cancer. Drugs that find and kill only cancer are considerably harder...

A: Make it easier to close job shop "gimme teh codez" questions

Shog9I've become increasingly pessimistic over the years that this problem can be solved by a close reason. No, pessimistic is misleading; I'm straight-up convinced that closing is the wrong tool for the job here. Trying to solve this problem by closing these questions is like trying to defend against...

I forgot about that one.

A: Why hasn't the question ban on my account lifted after 6 months?

Shog9Heh... So, first off... There are no bans that "lift" after 6 months. There's a ban that'll let you ask one more question after 6 months, in case you've learned how to ask good questions in those 6 months. But that doesn't lift the ban; it just lets you ask one question. If that question isn't ...

user202362
Actually youtube comments can be fairly interesting at the times

Put that in addition to the post block message. "Your posts haven't been well received: post 1: you deleted it even though it was answered, post 2..."

years ago, the guidance for bans consisted of the sentence, "we are no longer accepting questions from this account" and a short link to meta that most folks didn't follow and those that did thought was just an invitation to another site on which to ask their programming questions.
Now, we have help center articles w/ links to them, warnings, rate-limits with entire pages describing how to fix your questions before they become a large problem, and of course countless meta posts describing in detail everything that the help center leaves out...
Folks still mostly don't read any of it, and mostly don't understand what they do read.
So... Not sure putting more time into these is really gonna pay off.

I was going to questioning you why are you stalking, then your stalkee came so I will leave you two huddle yourselves

3:58 AM
Maybe we should all discreetly leave?

user202362
Sometimes I think "we are no longer accepting questions from this account" is a subtle hint that a Q banned user should ask questions from another account

@Shog9 Well, the guidelines are more designed for people who know the system. And none of them apply to the user's specific situation -- you expect people to crawl through pages upon pages to figure it out?

yup. we should definitely change it to "we don't like you anymore. don't ask anymore questions. like ever."

@hichris123 no, I expect them to shoot themselves in the feet and then leave. I hope they do something more useful, but I don't really expect it.

user202362
I mean, why "we are no longer accepting questions from this account" but not "we are no longer accepting questions from you"

4:02 AM
the guidance always boils down to, "make your questions suck less". Very few people can do that. Worrying about documenting the crazy edge cases when that central requirement won't be met isn't all that productive, I'm afraid.

@Shog9 Well if a single downvoted question gets a block nowadays, you're sweeping most new users into that category.

@hichris123 single downvoted question blocks for about a day

Ah.

I mean, depends on what else you've been doing, of course
But new user, no other participation, 1 question scoring -1... That'll usually be about a day.

SO is like using a set of keys. chances are if you don't have the patience to understand which key fits the lock, you'll probably irreparably damage the lock (and your patience) before you get inside

4:04 AM
Though maybe that information wouldn't be as useful. That is, focusing on how to ask a good question (a la Jeff's idea) would probably help more than telling someone why their question was horrible.

the point of the block is to slow the bleeding; it doesn't - can't, really - fix anything.

But it signals "this user needs help". If you can give the user some help...

Only on rooms where Smokey is running, e.g. Tavern (chat.MSE, all but SO posts), Charcoal HQ (chat.SE, all posts, main room), SOCVR (chat.SO, only for SO posts)

Yeah, but:
a) you need to register the command for that on the other domain. (e.g. to get notified in a chat.SE room you need to run !!/notify in a chat.SE room where Smokey listens to commands).
b) it can only notify you in rooms that it already posts in. (note that Smokey posts in more rooms than it listens to)
